NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — The concert season is ready to kick off at the West Side Tennis Club in Queens. This is the third straight year the former home of the U.S. Open will host musical acts. Back in its heyday the Forest Hills venue didn’t just host the U.S. Open, there were also big name concerts. Concert Season Ready To Kick Off At Forest Hills Tennis Stadium Peter Haskell reports play pause “Barbra Streisand, Frank Sinatra, The Beatles landed a helicopter on the grass courts,” producer John McMillan said. The stadium is nearly 100 years old and has been improved with new seats, wider aisles and hand rails. “It’s a very magical place with a lot of great history and you can feel that with every step you take in here,” said McMillan. The building holds more than 13,000 people, but despite its size, there’s an intimate atmosphere. “There’s not a bad seat in this entire place,” McMillan said. “The performers feel that the audience is really right on top of them and for as big a place as it is, it feels like it’s half the size.” Ed Sheeran is kicking off the concert season with two sold out performances Thursday and Friday night. Other acts include James Taylor, Van Morrison, Santana and The Who. For more information, click here .
