Florida (CBS Local)– Chris Taylor and his black Labrador recently spent a few hours at Honeymoon Island Dog Beach in Florida. Unfortunately for Taylor, that time at the beach ended up killing his dog. Taylor’s dog died of saltwater poisoning after he dehydrated and suffered a brain hemorrhage. Taylor’s dog O.G. began having stomach issues and diarrhea, which forced the owner to take him to the vet. Unfortunately, it was too late. “They told me, there’s nothing we can do right now. I thought, this is my son. I don’t have children of my own,” said Taylor . Saltwater can be extremely toxic for animals. According to veterinarians, ingesting large amounts of salt water can put a dog’s life in danger. Veterinarian Dr. Katy Meyer from the Tampa Bay Emergency Veterinarians Services has seen this story play out too many times. “Things can come on gradually and you’re not aware of how serious things are up front,” said Meyer . Dr. Meyer recommends that dog owners keep trips to the beach with their pets to two hours.

DALLAS, TEXAS (CBSDFW.COM) – It’s being called the “big bang” breakthrough in Alzheimer’s research. Doctors at UT Southwestern’s O’Donnell Brain Institute have detected what they believe are changes in a single molecule that could act as the starting point for the deadly, memory-stealing disease. Scientists are fairly certain that a molecule called “tau” is the culprit. “When the protein is in its good form, the reactive portions are hidden,” said Mark Diamond, M.D, at UT Southwestern’s O’Donnell Brain Institute. “When it transitions to bad form, the bad parts get exposed and allow the protein to assemble on itself, sort of like a Lego.” Dr. Diamond, also director of UT Southwestern’s Center for Alzheimer’s and Neurodegenerative Diseases and a leading dementia expert, said the ability to detect these molecular changes is his most significant finding in some 15 years of research. “The goal of what we’re doing right now is to develop tests that will diagnose the problem before there’s a disease…to pick up the first changes that are happening in someone’s brain before there are any symptoms,” said Dr. Diamond. Alzheimer’s is characterized by clumps of tangled protein in the brain. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, one in three seniors will die of the disease — and that’s more than breast and prostate cancer combined. Ultimately, researchers hope that warning signals for the disease can be effectively detected and therefore prevented with something as simple as a vaccine or pill. “I anticipate a day when we will think about these diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s as problems that only people who don’t get medical care develop,” said Dr. Diamond. Researchers know that there is much work ahead. It could be several years before the discovery is ready for human clinical trials. Until then, supporters say it’s critical for lawmakers to fund research at all levels. Patients can also get involved in local studies so doctors can learn as much as they can from seniors as they age. And while the advances won’t happen overnight, doctors say the overriding message for the community in the discovery is that there is hope. “There’s tremendous hope!” said Dr. Diamond. “We are actually super excited in our field. When I look at the future, I see many, many opportunities for good shots on goal.” And if he’s right, the discovery could be a life-changing win for the world.

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — A New York woman convicted of killing her infant daughter in the 1980s and suspected of killing seven of her eight other children has been granted parole. The state Department of Corrections and Community Supervision says Monday that 75-year-old Marybeth Tinning could be released from prison as early as next month. Her release from a Westchester County prison was approved last week after a parole hearing, her seventh since being imprisoned in 1987. A jury convicted the Schenectady resident of killing her ninth child, 4-month-old Tami Lynne, in December 1985. She was one of Marybeth and Joseph Tinning’s eight young children to die between 1972 and 1985 under suspicious circumstances. Authorities believe the couple’s first child died of natural causes. Marybeth Tinning was sentenced to 20 years to life. (© Copyright 2018 The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten or redistributed.)

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — The hunt is on for a suspect who police say opened fire outside a Brooklyn bodega, killing a 16-year-old boy. It happened Sunday afternoon in East New York. Witnesses say 16-year-old Justin Richey was involved in some kind of dispute. He then went into the bodega and when he walked out, a man pulled out a gun and shot him, CBS2’s Jenna DeAngelis reported. The teen than ran across the street where he collapsed near Blake Avenue and Pine Street. When officers arrived, police said they found Richey with multiple gunshot wounds to the torso. “He’s trying to run and he collapsed,” Asm Aladdin said. “My kids every day come out and want to play but now, from yesterday, they don’t want to come outside the house. We are very scared.” The teen was taken to Brookdale Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police are now investigating the possibility that the shooting was gang-related, DeAngelis reported. A community advocate was at the scene Monday, calling for change. “It’s just a tragedy and it has to stop. We have to find a way to figure out some solution to get these guns out of these kid’s hands,” Michael Thomas said. The teen, who was known by his friends as Richey, was described as a funny guy. They say he worked odd jobs, anything from yard work to cleaning, just to help his mom and siblings. “The reason he was working so hard was to take care of his family,” said friend Decory Peele. “He would clean up, walk dogs — he just did anything anybody asked him.” The NYPD added that the alleged shooter was last seen in a red t-shirt and grey sweatpants. Their investigation is ongoing.

Putin has denied being involved. “I find it hard to believe, but that’s what one of the purposes of this meeting is, so the president can see eye-to-eye with President Putin and ask him about it,” said National Security Adviser John Bolton. GRIFFITH PARK (CBSLA) — The LAPD bomb squad descended on the Greek Theatre in Griffith Park on Sunday. As CBSLA’s Cristy Fajardo reports, the LAPD said the bomb threat turned out to be a false alarm. Sky9 was over the Greek Theatre as bomb-sniffing dogs went through the aisles. The crowd had come to see YouTube star Yousef Erakat whose YouTube channel FouseyTube has more than a million subscribers. Police say about 6:15 p.m. they got a call from a person claiming to have planted an explosive device at the theater. The LAPD decided to clear out the venue just in case and brought in the bomb squad. The event was free and tickets had sold out but at that hour police say only about 1,500 people were at the Greek and Erakat had yet to take the stage. After it was clear the event was not going on he got on top of his car down the road and gave an impromptu performance. Some of his fans had driven hours to see him on short notice. The concert was only announced days ago and some fans are wondering if the threat was the handiwork of a jealous social media rival. “Everybody was enjoying themselves,” said a fan. “It was just getting better and then out of nowhere they make an announcement. They tell everybody ‘oh we need to evacuate. There’s a light problem.’ ” “It happens to a lot of people. A lot of YouTubers. There’s not much you can really do about it,” said another fan. On Saturday the Griffith Observatory also had a false alarm . Police were called out there to a call of a suspicious package. The Observatory was also evacuated and they also found nothing. Police say they don’t know if the two incidents are connected. They are now investigating.

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – A subway rider says he confronted a man for allegedly hitting a child on the E train, but police say the man then pulled out a knife. Cellphone video shows the suspect going on an expletive-laced tirade, waving the weapon and spitting at the straphanger before getting off the train. The 45-year-old victim, who did not want to reveal his identity, told CBS2’s Lisa Rozner it all started on the E train at Canal Street after the suspect hit his young son in a stroller. “He was crying, and that’s why caught everybody’s attention – the noise when he hit him on the arm,” the man said. “I have two kids. I wouldn’t do anything like that. That’s why I couldn’t hold myself when I say, ‘Listen, what you’re doing is not right.’” Victim: “Why you hitting your son?” Suspect: “Because he’s my son and I can do that.” At one point, the even yelled at the suspect to stop. Suspect: “I’m not stopping nothing until you do something.” This happened around 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, June 24. The victim was with his wife and 4-year-old daughter, who asked her dad if everything was OK. Suspect: “Yeah, it’s fine, your daddy will get killed on this train.” At the West 4 th Street stop, the suspect held the subway doors open and flashed the knife. “That’s obviously pretty scary,” another rider told Rozner. “You never know, and it just says you shouldn’t confront people on the subway, because it could be dangerous,” a woman added. Police said the suspect is now wanted for menacing. The victim said he takes the E train every day and he’s worried the suspect will retaliate. “If he pull a knife and threaten your life in front of everybody and holding his child at the same time, he’s a guy (that) doesn’t have anything to lose,” he said. He said he was just trying to do the right thing, but now will never intervene again.

ATWATER VILLAGE (CBSLA) — A conflict at an Atwater Village bar has gone viral. One of the groups involved has been identified as a hate group. The entire incident is causing quite a stir both online and in Atwater Village where people were even driving by screaming out their windows they want The Griffin shut down. The video that’s now going viral shows a group of men wearing Make America Great Again hats arguing with other bar patrons outside of the bar. People in the neighborhood identified the group as the Proud Boys. According to the Southern Poverty Law Center, it’s a hate group. Neighbors say they complained to management, but the Proud Boys were allowed to stay. Twitter has since exploded with posts about the incident. This tweet from Justin Caffier, a writer with Vice has been retweeted thousands of times over: Hey LA friends. Just a heads up to stay away from The Griffin in Atwater village. They accommodated a white supremacy group tonight and, when pressed about it, said “the only color [they] see is green.” Let’s make sure they don’t see much of that color anymore. — justin caffier (@JustinCaffier) July 15, 2018 Actor/comedian Kumail Nanjiani adding “Do not go to The Griffin in Atwater.” The Proud Boys responded on Twitter saying “we were hanging out having beers. Josh and his friends showed up looking to start a problem. They did. Then they cried online. The end.” We were hanging out having beers. Josh and his friends showed up looking to start a problem. They did. Then they cried online. The end. pic.twitter.com/NZPEnBwriV — The Proud Boys (@ProudBoysUSA) July 15, 2018 It wasn’t long before the owners of The Griffin also responded saying in part: “Neither I nor my business partner support any Nazi or white supremacist groups and this is not a Nazi bar. I advised that we use a tactic that I’ve used in the past with gang members or people that are obviously in there to cause problems — kill them with kindness and they’ll get bored and go away. It’s my bar and I’m ultimately responsible for what happened last night and I feel terrible and actually sick to my stomach.” Now thousands of people have taken to Yelp, posting one star reviews, urging people to avoid The Griffin. “I think it’s a little frightening if this becomes a gathering point for this type of festering movement,” said Gregory Schoon. LAPD said they were called around 10:30 Saturday night for a large fight. They say they asked both sides to leave and they cooperated.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) — A horse racing track in northern New Jersey is set to bring legal sports betting to New York City’s doorstep. The Meadowlands Racetrack in East Rutherford will begin taking sports bets at 11 a.m. Saturday. The track is located in the sports complex where the NFL’s New York Giants and Jets play, about six miles (10 kilometers) from New York City. The daily fantasy sports provider FanDuel is running the space, and says bettors will be able to wager on the World Cup final, men’s and women’s tennis, and Major League Baseball games. Later this year, gamblers will be able to place bets on everything from first downs to wins and losses in all major American sports. “The things that we will be bringing will be like being able to bet in the middle of a game, so that as the score changes the odds change,” FanDuel Chief Operating Officer and President Kip Levin says. It will become the fourth sports betting outlet in New Jersey, following the state’s U.S. Supreme Court victory in a case that cleared the way for all 50 states to legalize sports betting. Monmouth Park racetrack in Oceanport, near the Jersey shore, and the Borgata and Ocean Resort casinos in Atlantic City already offer it. Those three outlets took in $16.4 million in sports bets in the first two weeks it was legal. Some of the money raised was bet on events which haven’t even happened yet, like the World Series. In taxes alone, New Jersey has raised almost $294,000. “There was no legislation done in New York, so everybody in New York has to come, if they want to make a legal sports bet, here to the Meadowlands or Monmouth or Atlantic City,” Monmouth Racetrack CEO Jason Settlemoir said. Legislators predicted sports betting would raise 20 to 40 million dollars in tax revenue per year. While they haven’t made that money so far, they expect football season to bring them closer to that target. (© Copyright 2018 CBS Broadcasting Inc. All Rights Reserved.
