NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — The hunt is on for a suspect who police say opened fire outside a Brooklyn bodega, killing a 16-year-old boy. It happened Sunday afternoon in East New York. Witnesses say 16-year-old Justin Richey was involved in some kind of dispute. He then went into the bodega and when he walked out, a man pulled out a gun and shot him, CBS2’s Jenna DeAngelis reported. The teen than ran across the street where he collapsed near Blake Avenue and Pine Street. When officers arrived, police said they found Richey with multiple gunshot wounds to the torso. “He’s trying to run and he collapsed,” Asm Aladdin said. “My kids every day come out and want to play but now, from yesterday, they don’t want to come outside the house. We are very scared.” The teen was taken to Brookdale Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police are now investigating the possibility that the shooting was gang-related, DeAngelis reported. A community advocate was at the scene Monday, calling for change. “It’s just a tragedy and it has to stop. We have to find a way to figure out some solution to get these guns out of these kid’s hands,” Michael Thomas said. The teen, who was known by his friends as Richey, was described as a funny guy. They say he worked odd jobs, anything from yard work to cleaning, just to help his mom and siblings. “The reason he was working so hard was to take care of his family,” said friend Decory Peele. “He would clean up, walk dogs — he just did anything anybody asked him.” The NYPD added that the alleged shooter was last seen in a red t-shirt and grey sweatpants. Their investigation is ongoing.

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) – A critically endangered gorilla is being introduced to the public for the first time Thursday since moving into her new home at the Los Angeles Zoo. (Jamie Pham/L.A. Zoo) Twenty-four-year-old Ndjia, a female western lowland gorilla, was brought to the L.A. Zoo from the San Diego Zoo back in May. She has been paired up with the zoo’s male silverback gorilla, 31-year-old Kelly, with the hopes that they will breed. “This move has allowed Ndjia to be placed in a breeding situation for the first time in her life, and it is the Zoo’s hope that Ndjia and the group’s male, Kelly, will take a liking to each other,” the zoo said in a news release. Along with Ndjia and Kelly, the L.A. Zoo has two other gorillas: 42-year-old Evelyn and 24-year-old Rapunzel. (Jamie Pham/L.A. Zoo) Western lowland gorillas are found in Cameroon, the Central African Republic, Equatorial Guinea, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Gabon, and Angola, according to the L.A. Zoo. They are listed as “critically endangered” on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species due to illegal hunting, the Ebola virus and habitat destruction. Their population is believed to be decreasing rapidly, with no recent estimate on the number of western lowland gorillas left in the wild. Last month, Koko, the famous western lowland gorilla who mastered sign language, died at the age of 46 in California’s Santa Cruz Mountains.
