NEW YORK (AP) — Aaron Nola allowed one hit in seven shutout innings and lashed a three-run double that sent the Philadelphia Phillies past the New York Mets 3-1 on Monday for a split of their twinight doubleheader. One night after being named to his first All-Star team, Nola (12-2) struck out 10 and won his sixth straight decision to become the only 12-game winner in the National League. With his teammates scuffling at the plate, he took care of the offense himself by doubling his career RBI total in the fifth. In the opener, Wilmer Flores connected for a pinch-hit homer in the bottom of the 10th to give New York a 4-3 victory. The teams combined for just four hits in the nightcap, two by Flores. After Flores’ RBI double off Tommy Hunter with two outs in the ninth, Victor Arano struck out pinch-hitter Devin Mesoraco with runners at the corners for his third save. Arano served up Flores’ decisive homer in the first game. Philadelphia, which began the day barely leading the NL East over Atlanta, won for the ninth time in 12 games. New York has lost 18 of its past 22 home games. Mets rookie starter Corey Oswalt (0-2) retired his first 12 batters, striking out six, before running into trouble in the fifth. He issued consecutive walks on full-count pitches to begin the inning, then got two outs before Maikel Franco was intentionally walked to load the bases. Nola lined the next pitch the other way down the right-field line for his second career extra-base hit, giving him six RBIs in the majors. Before that swing, he was 2 for 35 at the plate this year and an .066 lifetime hitter in the big leagues. On the mound, the right-hander matched his major league high for wins. He reached double digits in strikeouts for the sixth time in his career and fourth this season. He hasn’t lost since May 20 at St. Louis. After a two-out single by Flores in the first, Nola retired 18 consecutive batters before Michael Conforto walked in the seventh. Those were the only two baserunners to reach against Nola, the lone All-Star selected from the Phillies. The opener was a makeup of an April 2 game postponed by snow. Flores led off the 10th and nearly reached safely on a hit by pitch. In fact, he contended the ball grazed his arm and he started toward first base. When plate umpire Tom Hallion called ball three, Flores motioned toward the New York dugout to request a replay review. “It did hit him. We saw it on the replay and then I just talked to him,” Mets starter Zack Wheeler said with a chuckle. “Glad they didn’t overturn it.” The ruling stood following the review — but Flores did one better. He drove the next delivery from Arano (1-1) off the left-field foul pole for his fourth career game-ending homer and second this season. That gave Flores four of New York’s five walk-off RBIs this year and 10 in his career, three more than anyone else in the majors since 2014 and one better than David Wright for the most in Mets history. Flores’ four game-ending homers are tied for the team record. Smiling teammates hopped over the dugout railing and swarmed Flores at home plate after his fifth career pinch-hit homer, second this year. And with that one, Wilmer walked ’em off again. “It’s almost getting to the point where you expect it,” Wheeler said. “I know when the game’s on the line, that’s the guy you want to have up there.” Flores started at second base and batted third in the nightcap. Asdrubal Cabrera also homered for New York in the opener and hit an RBI double off the top of the right-center fence. Franco homered and Nick Williams had three hits for the Phillies, who stranded 12 and went 2 for 13 with runners in scoring position. “We didn’t get the big hit in the big moment,” manager Gabe Kapler said. “We’ve had that happen from time to time.” Tim Peterson (2-1) pitched out of trouble in the 10th, and Robert Gsellman escaped a big jam in the eighth for the Mets. Despite pitching pretty well lately, Wheeler is 0-5 in 13 starts since his last win April 29 at San Diego. That’s the longest stretch without a victory for a Mets starter since 1998. Phillies right-hander Zach Eflin gave up three runs in five innings. He was 6-0 with a 1.91 ERA in his previous six starts. TRAINER’S ROOM Phillies: RHP Vince Velasquez (bruised right forearm) is expected back from the disabled list to pitch Wednesday night against All-Star ace Jacob deGrom in the finale of the four-game series. … RHP Luis Garcia (strained right wrist) is getting “really close” to returning, Kapler said. Mets: 3B Todd Frazier was placed on the 10-day DL with a strained muscle in his left rib cage. … The team is optimistic RHP Noah Syndergaard will rejoin the rotation this weekend against Washington, manager Mickey Callaway said. Syndergaard has been sidelined since late May with a strained ligament in his right index finger. … LHP Jason Vargas (strained right calf) allowed one hit over six shutout innings in a rehab outing for Class A Brooklyn. He struck out nine, walked none and threw 49 of 64 pitches for strikes. Vargas also could return to the big league rotation this weekend. ROSTER MOVES Philadelphia recalled LHP Hoby Milner from Lehigh Valley and added RHP Jake Thompson as the 26th man for the doubleheader. … Between games, the Mets reinstated LHP Jerry Blevins from the bereavement list and designated RHP Chris Beck for assignment. UP NEXT Two starting pitchers making their major league debuts Tuesday night. Philadelphia is likely to call up 22-year-old RHP Enyel De Los Santos from Triple-A Lehigh Valley, where he is 9-3 with a 1.89 ERA in 16 starts. New York plans to call up 28-year-old RHP Drew Gagnon from Triple-A Las Vegas, where he is 1-4 with a 4.67 ERA in 17 starts. Gagnon expects to have his parents, fiancee and three sisters in the crowd. (© Copyright 2018 The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved. NEW YORK (AP) — Nathan Eovaldi took a perfect game into the seventh inning, C.J. Cron hit an early three-run homer and the Tampa Bay Rays routed the New York Mets 9-0 on Sunday. Eovaldi retired his first 18 batters before Brandon Nimmo lined a clean single to right field leading off the seventh. Nimmo was quickly erased on a double play, and Eovaldi faced the minimum through seven innings. The right-hander, who returned this season from his second Tommy John surgery, struck out nine and helped himself with an RBI single. Andrew Kittredge pitched the final two innings for the Rays, giving up a single in the ninth before finishing the two-hitter. Joey Wendle and Jake Bauers also homered for Tampa Bay. It was the second time this season Eovaldi (3-3) made it through six innings without allowing a hit. He threw six hitless innings in May against Oakland for a 6-0 Rays win in his first major league start since 2016. Three times this year Eovaldi has gone six or more innings and given up no more than one hit, tied with Pittsburgh’s Trevor Williams for most in the majors. Cron’s home run gave the Rays a 3-0 lead in the first. He connected on a fastball down the middle from Chris Flexen (0-2) and drove it into the second deck in left field. The homer was Cron’s 17th of the season, setting a career high. Flexen, making his first big league start since last September, struggled with command early. He only lasted three innings on a day when the Mets needed length from their starter ahead of a doubleheader Monday. He gave up five earned runs in three innings, walking three and hitting a batter with a pitch. Eovaldi knocked in a run in the fifth when he beat out an infield single to make it 6-0. A day after putting the leadoff hitter on in seven of nine innings, the listless Mets were shut out for the second consecutive game. They’ve been blanked eight times this season and have gone 14 straight series without winning one. TRAINER’S ROOM Rays: RHP Chaz Roe was placed on the 10-day disabled list with a left meniscus tear. He will have a procedure Friday and is expected to miss at least four to six weeks. RHP Jaime Schultz was recalled from Triple-A. … Gold Glove CF Kevin Kiermaier did not start due to back tightness. … SS Willy Adames sat out for the second consecutive day due to illness. … 2B Daniel Robertson was hit by a pitch on the inside of his right elbow in the first but stayed in the game. … OF Mallex Smith left with leg cramps after running the bases in the fifth. Mets: SS Amed Rosario was given a planned day off. Mets manager Mickey Callaway said Rosario will play both games Monday against Philadelphia. … RHP Noah Syndergaard was scheduled to make a rehab start at Class A Brooklyn, his first game since being placed on the disabled list May 26 with a strained ligament in the index finger on his pitching hand. UP NEXT Rays: RHP Chris Archer (3-4, 4.24 ERA) pitches the series opener Monday night at home against Detroit. It will be Archer’s first start since June 2 when he was placed on the DL for the first time in his career with a left abdominal strain. Tampa Bay manager Kevin Cash said Archer will be limited to “loosely” 70 pitches. Mets: RHP Zack Wheeler (2-6, 4.36 ERA) starts the opener against the Phillies, and RHP Corey Oswalt (0-1, 7.94) goes in the nightcap as the teams make up an April 2 postponement. ANAHEIM (AP) — Ross Stripling pitched another gem and Justin Turner drove in two runs to lead the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 3-1 win over the Angels on Saturday night. Stripling (7-2) is making a strong case to make the AL All-Star team with another terrific outing. He allowed just one run and three hits — all by Mike Trout — in six innings. The right-hander struck out seven and walked none, and lowered his ERA to 2.14. After blowing a save opportunity on Friday night, Kenley Jansen pitched a perfect ninth to earn his 24th save. The 28-year-old Stripling retired nine of the last 10 batters he faced for the Dodgers, who have won five of their last six games. Trout went 3 for 3 against Stripling, including a solo home run to left-center field in the sixth inning for his 25th of the season and 50th RBI. Trout, who finished 3 for 4 overall in his 11th three-hit game of the season, is now 5 for 5 with two home runs in his career against Stripling. The Angels’ Shohei Ohtani fouled a ball off what appeared to be his right foot in the ninth during his at-bat against Jansen. After a trainer, interpreter and Mike Scioscia went to check on him, he stayed in the game and struck out — but hobbled back to the dugout. Turner hit a two-out single in the fifth inning off Taylor Cole (0-1) to give the Dodgers a 2-0 lead. Yasiel Puig hit a two-out, solo home run to center field off Noe Ramirez in the ninth to put the Dodgers ahead 3-1. Deck McGuire made his second start for the Angels. He allowed one hit and struck out six in three innings in his first career appearance against the Dodgers. In the fourth inning, reliever Jose Alvarez got Cody Bellinger and Matt Kemp to ground out, but then walked Yasmani Grandal and was pulled in favor of Cole. TRAINER’S ROOM Dodgers: RHP Yimi Garcia (right forearm inflammation) was placed on the disabled list. … LHP Rich Hill (sore neck) is expected to make his scheduled start on Tuesday against San Diego. … RHP Walker Buehler (right rib micro fracture) is scheduled to throw a five-inning simulated game Sunday. Dave Roberts expects him to make a start next weekend against the Angels. Angels: LHP Tyler Skaggs (right adductor strain) will throw a bullpen this weekend. … RHP Jim Johnson (lumbar strain) is scheduled to start a rehab assignment at Class A Inland Empire on Sunday. UP NEXT Dodgers: LHP Alex Wood (5-5, 3.84 ERA) got the win in the Dodgers’ 17-1 victory over Pittsburgh last week. He allowed one run on six hits and walked none in six innings. Angels: LHP Andrew Heaney (4-6, 3.94 ERA) is grooving in his last six starts at home, where he is 4-1 with a 0.88 ERA. He’s 0-2 with a 6.10 ERA in two career starts against the Dodgers. TORONTO (AP) — Luis Severino pitched five innings to earn his major league-leading 14th win, Brett Gardner and Aaron Judge each hit solo home runs, and the New York Yankees beat the Toronto Blue Jays 8-5 Saturday. Severino (14-2) won his fifth straight start, allowing three runs and five hits. Two of the hits were home runs, marking the first time this season that Severino has allowed more than one homer in a game. He has allowed three earned runs or less in 16 consecutive starts. Jonathan Holder, David Robertson, Dellin Betances each worked one inning and Aroldis Chapman got the first out of the ninth before leaving with an apparent injury. Chasen Shreve finished for New York, giving up a solo homer to Aledmys Diaz. Gardner connected on left-hander J.A. Happ’s first pitch of the game, the 14th leadoff homer of his career. Judge piled on when he homered on Happ’s fifth pitch, his 25th of the season. Happ (10-5), a potential trade target for the Yankees, had a dreadful audition. He allowed six runs and four hits in 2 2-3 innings, his shortest start of the season. Happ matched season-worsts by allowing seven runs and 10 hits in his previous outing, last Sunday against Detroit. He has lost back-to-back starts after a six-game winning streak. Brandon Drury hit a two-run double in the first and Gardner hit a two-run triple in the fifth before scoring on catcher Luke Maile’s passed ball. Toronto’s Kevin Pillar hit a two-run homer in the second and Randal Grichuk added a solo shot in the fourth. New York outfielder Aaron Hicks left after four innings because of a sore left leg. Clint Frazier came on to play left field in the bottom of the fifth, with Gardner moving from left to center. Home plate umpire Lance Barrett made two ejections, both in the third inning. Yankees left-hander CC Sabathia was ejected for arguing balls and strikes from the bench moments before Blue Jays manager John Gibbons was also tossed for arguing. TRAINER’S ROOM Yankees: New York recalled Frazier from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes Barre and designated RHP David Hale for assignment. Hale pitched 5 2-3 innings Friday in relief of RHP Sonny Gray. … C Gary Sanchez (right groin) caught RHP Masahiro Tanaka’s pregame bullpen session and also took two rounds of batting practice. Manager Aaron Boone said Sanchez could begin a minor league rehab assignment July 15. … Triple-A RHP Luis Cessa is expected to start the second game of Monday’s doubleheader at Baltimore. Triple-A RHP Jonathan Loaisiga was a candidate for the start but has been ruled out because of a sore shoulder. Boone said Loaisiga had an MRI Friday and will visit New York’s team doctor Monday. Blue Jays: RHP Preston Guilmet was assigned to Triple-A Buffalo. Guilmet was designated for assignment Wednesday. UP NEXT Yankees RHP Domingo German (2-4, 5.37) faces Blue Jays LHP Ryan Borucki (0-1, 2.77) in Sunday’s series finale. German has failed to complete five innings in his past two starts. Borucki made his home debut against Detroit on Monday, allowing two runs and two hits in seven innings. (© Copyright 2018 The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved. Severino Leads Yankees To Victory Over Blue Jays; Chapman Hurt
TORONTO (AP) — Justin Smoak hit a three-run homer, Yangervis Solarte reached base four times and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the New York Yankees 6-2 on Friday night. Smoak connected in Toronto’s five-run second inning, when the Blue Jays batted around and put an early end to struggling right-hander Sonny Gray’s latest outing. Solarte went 3 for 4 with a walk as the Blue Jays won for the 12th time in 16 home games. Aaron Hicks homered and had two RBIs in the opener of New York’s 11-game road trip. Gray (5-7) allowed five runs and six hits in two innings, his shortest start of the season and his third straight loss. Gray lasted just 2 1/3 innings in his previous start, matching a season worst by allowing six runs in an 11-0 loss to the division-leading Boston Red Sox. Gray retired the first two batters he faced Friday before loading the bases with two walks and a single. He escaped unscathed when Russell Martin struck out swinging. Things went downhill for Gray in the second, which began with Randal Grichuk’s double. One out later, Devon Travis and Curtis Granderson hit back-to-back RBI singles. Smoak capped the inning with a two-out homer, his 12th. Hicks hit a solo home run in the third, his career-high 16th, then chased Blue Jays right-hander Sam Gaviglio with a bases-loaded walk in the fifth. Joe Biagini came on and struck out Giancarlo Stanton looking, then got Didi Gregorius to fly out. Gaviglio allowed two runs, one earned, and four hits in 4 1/3 innings. Gaviglio is winless in seven starts, dating to a May 25 victory at Philadelphia. Biagni (1-5) pitched 1 2/3 innings for his first win of 2018. TRAINER’S ROOM Yankees: New York recalled INF Tyler Wade from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. He takes the place of 2B Gleyber Torres (right hip), who was placed on the 10-day disabled list Wednesday. … RHP Masahiro Tanaka (left and right hamstring strains) allowed two runs and three hits in five innings in a rehab start at Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Wednesday. Tanaka is expected to return to New York’s rotation next Tuesday at Baltimore. … Manager Aaron Boone said LHP CC Sabathia will pitch the opening game of Monday’s doubleheader against the Orioles. New York will call up a pitcher from the minors to start Game 2, Boone said, with RHP Luis Cessa and RHP Jonathan Loaisiga among the candidates. Blue Jays: LHP Jaime Garcia (shoulder) felt good after a bullpen session Friday and will be re-evaluated Saturday. He has yet to begin a rehab assignment. … Utilityman Darnell Sweeney cleared waivers and was assigned to Triple-A Buffalo. UP NEXT Yankees RHP Luis Severino (13-2, 1.98) faces Blue Jays LHP J.A. Happ (10-4, 4.03) on Saturday afternoon. Severino, who leads the majors in wins, will be pitching on extra rest thanks to New York’s off day Thursday. Happ lost to Detroit last Sunday, matching season worsts by allowing seven runs and 10 hits. The defeat snapped Happ’s streak of six straight winning decisions.
