IRWINDALE (CBSLA) — One person was injured Thursday after a brush fire erupted near the Santa Fe Dam Recreation Area in Irwindale. A firefighter tells CBS2/KCAL9’s Crystal Cruz a civilian was injured due to smoke inhalation as the fire spread, reaching 15 acres by 7:20 p.m. A Los Angeles County Fire Department spokesperson said the MTA gold line track was also affected by the flames. Choppers swooped water out of the dam and hit the 10-foot brush as crews on the ground attacked the blaze. By sundown, the fire seemed to be dying down but crews are staffed around the Southland just in case more fires pop up with the triple digits on the horizon. Crews are meanwhile bracing for extreme heat and low humidity as they work on the ground. “We do augmented staffing and strategically place extra personnel and units throughout the county in case there’s an incident,” L.A. County Fire Cpt. Chris Reade said. Crews will remain on scene through Friday until all hot spots are out.
