Body Found In Burned Out Agoura Hills Home

List of Closures and Evacuations | Real-Time Updates AGOURA HILLS (CBSLA) – A body found Tuesday in a charred Agoura Hills Home in the Woolsey Fire burn area is believed to belong to a man in his 70s. (CBS2) The Los Angeles County coroner’s office confirmed to CBS2 Wednesday that the body was found at a scorched home in a remote canyon in the 32000 block of Lobo Canyon Road. The area around the home was completely scorched by the fire. L.A. County Sheriff’s homicide detectives at the scene told CBS2 they responded to the residence Tuesday after neighbors reported that the homeowner had not been seen since the Woolsey Fire broke out. Cadaver dogs found the man’s body in the burned out shell of the home, the sheriff’s department said. Coroner’s investigators were called out to identify the victim’s remains. This could be the third victim of the Woolsey Fire. The badly burned bodies of two people were found Nov. 9 inside a burned vehicle in a long driveway in the 33000 block of Mulholland Highway in Malibu. Sheriff’s detectives believe the vehicle may have become engulfed in flames when the driver became disoriented. LATEST COVERAGE OF THE WOOLSEY FIRE The 97,000-acre Woolsey Fire broke out around 2:30 p.m. on Nov. 8 in the area of Alfa Road and East Street, south of Simi Valley. On Nov. 9, it jumped the south side of the 101 Freeway at Chesebro Road near Calabasas and began spreading into Malibu.

Officials: Santa Susana Nuclear Site Safe From Woolsey Fire

SIMI VALLEY (CBSLA) — Local, state and federal agencies have inspected the Santa Susana Field Laboratory and found that the nuclear Superfund site was not impacted by the Woolsey Fire. The U.S. Department of Energy, its contractors and the California Department of Toxic Substances Control inspected the site on Sunday, Nov. 11 and determined that Area IV and the Northern Buffer Zone was untouched by the fire. View of Area IV and DOE buildings which remain undamaged from fire. (DOE) The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health also performed an assessment of the site and found “no discernible level of radiation in the tested area.” For decades starting in the 1940s, the U.S. government conducted rocket testing, nuclear reactor testing and liquid metal research at Santa Susana. There was a series of nuclear accidents at the site including the worst nuclear meltdown in American history in 1959.

Man Dies After Road Rage Shooting On 710 Freeway

BELL GARDENS (CBSLA) — A man who was shot in a road range incident on the 710 Freeway has died of his injuries, authorities said Friday. Shots were fired at about 9:30 p.m. Thursday, after a road rage incident on the northbound 710 Freeway, north of the 91 Freeway in South Gate. The victim was a passenger in one of the vehicles involved. Details of the road rage incident were not available, but the suspect fired several rounds, hitting the victim at least once in the upper torso, Los Angeles County sheriff’s Deputy Trina Schrader said. The driver of the victim vehicle got off the freeway on Florence Avenue and drove to a parking lot to call for help, Schrader said. The victim was then taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The driver was not hurt. A description of the suspect or vehicle were not immediately available. Off-Duty Deputy Stabbed In Boyle Heights

BOYLE HEIGHTS (CBSLA) – An off-duty Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputy is expected to survive after being stabbed in Boyle Heights, authorities said. The stabbing was reported sometime before 6 a.m. In the 3400 block of East 1st Street. The deputy did not require transport to a hospital, the sheriff’s department said. The exact nature of the deputy’s injuries were not disclosed. The circumstances leading up to the stabbing were not confirmed. There was no immediate suspect description. Los Angeles police are investigating.

Report: Adult Marijuana Use Increased By A Third Ahead Of CA Legalization

STUDIO CITY (CBSLA) — A report out Thursday finds marijuana use among adults increased by over a third in the years leading up to the passage of California’s recreational cannabis law. T he report from the Los Angeles County Dept. of Public Health found the percentage of adults over the age of 18 who reported using marijuana increased 33 percent from 2011 to 2015, from 9 percent to 12 percent. Results of the 8,008-adult survey indicated a person’s country of origin was a factor in whether or not they used marijuana. As an example, researchers pointed to the fact that use among Latinos and Asians overall, 10 percent and 6 percent, respectively, was lower than whites at 15 percent. However, use among U.S.-born Latinos and Asians was much higher. For U.S.-born Latinos it was 20 percent; U.S.-born Asians used more than double at 13 percent. “The extremely low use of marijuana among those not born in the US is encouraging and suggests that cultural norms may have a protective effect in immigrant communities,” researchers concluded. Twenty percent of African-Americans surveyed said they used marijuana. They also noted use among adults living below the federal poverty lever was lower than all other income groups at 8 percent, while use among U.S.-born persons living under the poverty line was 19 percent. “High rates of marijuana use among low-income communities prior to the passage of Prop 64 means we must pay close attention to where dispensaries are clustered post-legalization,” researchers said. Proposition 64, passed in 2016, allowed adults 21 and over to possess up to an ounce of marijuana. Purchases of cannabis at licensed dispensaries was made legal this year.

Tristan’s passing has been incredibly difficult for me and my family and we continue to grieve over this senseless loss,” Erica Wu said. “Tristan was a devoted husband and father whose life revolved around our family, our happiness, and his hopes and dreams for our future. We met when we were teenagers, grew up together, married, and had two amazing and beautiful daughters. In everything that he did, Tristan was kind, selfless, and giving, and had a natural ability to connect with just about anyone. Three Hurt In Plane Crash On Catalina Island

SANTA CATALINA ISLAND (CBSLA) – Three people were injured when a small plane crashed at an airport on Catalina Island Wednesday morning. According to the Los Angeles County Fire Department, the plane over-ran the runway at Catalina Airport at 9:38 a.m. On person suffered moderate injuries and two others sustained minor injuries. All three were airlifted to hospitals on the mainland, the fire department said. All the patients are expected to survive. The plane type and the exact cause of the crash were not confirmed. Catalina Island is about 20 miles off the coast of Huntington Beach.

Woman Sustains Critical Burns In El Monte Chemical Attack

EL MONTE (CBSLA) – A woman is in critical condition after suffering burns in an apparent chemical attack in El Monte early Saturday morning. (LASD SEB/Twitter) At around 1 a.m., El Monte police responded to a 911 call regarding a woman screaming in the 3600 block of Durfee Avenue. They arrived to find the victim which severe burns. She was rushed to Los Angeles County+USC Medical Center in critical condition. Her name was not released. An L.A. County Sheriff’s Department Special Enforcement Bureau hazmat team was also called to the scene to what was being called a “caustic liquid attack.” The circumstances of the situation are unconfirmed. It’s unclear if police are searching for or have identified any suspects.

Study Links ADHD To Teens And Their Digital Media Use

LOS ANGELES, Calif. (CBS Local) – A study of teens using high-tech devices has found a link between constant use of digital media and ADHD. According to scientists at USC, teens who are “heavy users” of digital devices like smartphones were twice as likely to show symptoms of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder than adolescents who only use the gadgets occasionally. “New, mobile technologies can provide fast, high-intensity stimulation accessible all day, which has increased digital media exposure far beyond what’s been studied before,” Adam Leventhal, professor of preventive medicine and psychology at USC said in a press release . Researchers examined nearly 2,600 public school students in Los Angeles County from 2014 to 2016 and tracked how often they used “14 popular digital media platforms.” The study, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association , discovered that 9.5 percent of the students who used half of the tested platforms had developed ADHD. Over 10 percent of the teens that reported using all of the platforms were found to have ADHD symptoms. Less than 500 students reported being infrequent users of digital media. Among those teens, only 4.6 percent of the students had been diagnosed with attention deficit disorder. “We can say with confidence that teens who were exposed to higher levels of digital media were significantly more likely to develop ADHD symptoms in the future,” Leventhal added. The USC team said they focused the two-year study on 15 and 16-year-olds because adolescence was a common point for the onset of ADHD and was also the point where children normally get “unfettered access to digital media.”

Baby Reported Thrown Off Cliff Found Safe At Relative’s Home

SYLMAR (CBSLA) — A baby rescuers were looking for off the side of a cliff in Sylmar was found safe Tuesday morning at a relative’s home in the San Fernando Valley. The child’s father had reported at about 1 a.m. that he and the baby’s mother had argued and she claimed to have tossed the baby over a cliff near Lopez Canyon and Kagel Canyon roads, according to Los Angeles County sheriff’s Deputy Tracy Koerner. Los Angeles County firefighters and search and rescue teams from Altadena and Crescenta Valley were dispatched to the scene to look for the child, while the parents were detained for questioning. During the investigation, the mother admitted she did not throw the baby over a cliff and that the child was at a relative’s home, Koerner said. Revelation About LA Deputies’ Secret Clique Sparks Calls For Investigation

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) – Concern is growing over a supposed secret clique of Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies who brand their members with matching skull tattoos. The revelation this week that a deputy admitted to getting inked two years ago as part of a ritual within the LASD Compton station has raised concerns that deputy cliques, long part of a controversial agency subculture, have persisted despite the department’s reform efforts, the Los Angeles Times reported Friday. Some members of the Sheriff Civilian Oversight Commission are calling on LASD to investigate the issue. Hernan Vera, who serves on the SCOC, said the deputy’s admission in a lawsuit over a fatal shooting that he and as many as 20 others have the signature tattoos was “thoroughly disturbing,” The Times reported. The latest revelations, detailed this week by the Times, center on a deposition given in May by Deputy Samuel Aldama, who described under oath a tattoo on his calf featuring a skull in a military-style helmet bearing the letters CPT, for Compton, along with a rifle, encircled by flames. He said he got the tattoo in June 2016, about two months before he was involved in the fatal shooting of Donta Taylor, The Times reported. Sheriff Jim McDonnell said that for the last year, the department has been examining deputy tattoos, logos and symbolism within the organization, but he hasn’t launched a new investigation into the Compton station deputies. He said there is also a separate administrative investigation into the shooting, which may address the deputy’s admissions. The department has a history of clandestine groups with names like the Regulators, Grim Reapers and Jump Out Boys that have been accused of promoting highly aggressive tactics and perpetuating a code of silence among members. Five Hurt After Car Plows Into Crowd Outside Downey Bar; Driver Arrested

DOWNEY (CBSLA) – A man has been taken into custody on drunken driving charges after he allegedly drove his car into a crowd of people outside a Downey bar early Friday morning, injuring himself and four others. The collision occurred before 2:15 a.m. outside the Anarchy Library bar, at East Foster Road and Woodruff Avenue. Witnesses told CBS2 that the suspect, a 28-year-old man, was driving down the street, revving his engine just before he lost control and slammed into the crowd. The car also struck a pole and another car. “And he revved the engine up just to show off the engine in front of everybody in front of the club, showing off the engine, revving it, driving lightning fast,” witness Mark Gonzalez told CBS2. “Then he made a turn on this street going this direction, burning rubber, skidding across the intersection, and then I didn’t see him, and then a second later, boom, we heard the crash.” Four pedestrians were hurt, three of whom sustained critical injuries, the Los Angeles County Fire Department confirmed. One of the victims was pinned underneath the car and had to be rescued. “He got pinned between two cars and he was laying on the ground right there,” witness Gregory Jones said. “Personally, it hurts my heart to see anything like that, I had to walk across the street. I couldn’t even look any longer.” All four were rushed to a hospital and are expected to survive, the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department reports. The driver was also taken to a hospital with minor injuries and was later booked on charges of driving under the influence of intoxicants.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A grandmother who spent 11 years in prison for killing her grandson has been released after her lawyers provided evidence that the boy might have died from an accidental fall. Loyola Law School attorneys said Wednesday that Maria Mendez was released from prison late last month after pleading no contest to manslaughter and child abuse for the 2006 death of her 9-month-old grandson. Mendez served 11 years of a 25-year sentence. Under a deal with Los Angeles County prosecutors, she was resentenced to time served. During trial, county medical experts testified the boy’s traumatic brain injuries were caused by abuse. But Mendez’s lawyers last month presented CT scans and autopsy photos indicating the injuries could have been caused by an earlier fall.
