A young woman is dead and six teens are wounded after a shooting at a party in Brooklyn. (CBS2) “There was a house party at the location, when an unknown perpetrator entered the location and began to shoot in the lobby,” NYPD Assistant Chief Judith Harrison. Bullets went through the walls of the apartment and hit seven people, killing a 20-year-old woman visiting from Virginia and injuring six other victims between the ages of 14 and 19. “Over 100 young people in this hallway last night. Not one call came in before the shooting to say that there was disruption going on,” one woman said. Link: Tracking Shootings In NYC Neighbors were heartbroken to learn the victims were so young. “It has to stop. Please, I’m speaking to everyone. I’m a father who lost a child to gun violence, and I don’t want to see nobody else die,” a man added. “Real terrible, it’s really bad. People killing each other, it don’t make no sense at all,” said another woman. As CBS2’s John Dias reported, the victims were at an after party for a Sweet 16 that was broken up earlier in the night in East New York . Police said a 17-year-old was shot at that party, and it’s believed this may have been retaliation. The victim in the first shooting is expected to survive. “This Sweet 16 party attracted a large crowd, and 911 was called to location,” NYPD Deputy Chief Michael Kemper said. “It could be a retaliatory shooting or it could be a continuation.” MORE FROM CBS NEW YORK COVID In New York: Cuomo Says It’s Possible NYC Schools Could Reopen Even If Positivity Rate Stays Above 3% Pushes, Punches, Slashings: With Violence Getting Out Of Control On NYC Subways, Guardian Angels Step Up To Patrol NYPD Officer Assaulted By Multiple People While Jogging In Queens Shooting incidents across the city are up almost 95% year-to-date. “Wave after wave after wave of gun violence. That is now considered to be a tsunami,” said one man at a gathering to end gun violence in Bed-Stuy. “A Sweet 16 should not end with bitter violence, with seven people being shot,” Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams said at the event. “This is not normal for us. These are real issues. A child should not leave an apartment and step over dead bodies.” Adams went on to say the NYPD needs to focus on what he called precision policing and temporarily redeploy officers away from Midtown, Manhattan to these outer boroughs. Police believe there was more than one shooter involved in Sunday night’s shooting, and at least two different guns were used. So far, no arrests have been made.
