Brooklyn Man Arrested, Charged With Sexually Abusing Teenage Girl

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — A Brooklyn man has been arrested and charged with sexually abusing a 15-year-old girl. A grand jury indicted 62-year-old Jacob Daskal on charges of coercing the teenager and traveling with intent to engage in criminal sexual activity. Prosecutors say the alleged abuse took place between August and November of 2017. At least some of the alleged abuse happened at Daskal’s Borough Park home. Daskal is the founder of the Borough Park Shomrim , a private Orthodox crime patrol group. He was indicted in the case in 2018 and was released on bail. Daskal could face at least 10 years in prison if convicted.

Davell Gardner Jr. was with his family at a park in Bedford-Stuyvesant when shots rang out back in July. The incident was the latest in several recent unprovoked subway shoves that have commuters on edge, CBS2’s Christina Fan reported Monday. Looking at those videos and being like, oh, I could have gotten really hurt,” Schoenherr said. Schoenherr said he got off, hoping to switch cars, but the man followed him, blocking him at every turn. In the past week there have been two other similar attacks. On Thursday, a homeless man shoved a woman into the path of an oncoming train . The day before, a man was shoved off the platform at Bryant Park. Mayor Bill de Blasio addressed the unsettling trend on Monday. “The NYPD is going to be increasing its presence in the subways. That will be very visible. We continue to expand our mental health efforts,” de Blasio said. Fan pressed the city for specifics, but was only told officers would be added to high-traffic subway stations. The transit system is for people who are using it to travel. MTA and NYC Transit, our personnel are out there in the system, we are doing our best to make sure the commuters, New Yorkers, are safe,” Feinberg said. “We have a crisis in this city with mentally ill people who need help, and it absolutely needs to be addressed, and I’m desperate for this mayor or the next mayor to take it on because we’ve got a long way to go.” Schoenherr agrees. “I’m hoping the city can approach this issue with empathy and making sure it is treated in a humane way,” he said. Schoenherr said that would mean help instead of jail time for the man who shoved him. Early Tuesday morning, police arrested 33-year-old Michael Medlock in the case. He was charged with attempted assault, reckless endangerment and menacing.

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) — A Brooklyn synagogue that reportedly hosted a secret wedding with thousands of unmasked guests earlier this month is facing a hefty fine. Mayor Bill de Blasio said Monday that Yetev Lev temple in Williamsburg will have to fork over $15,000. He called the event irresponsible and unacceptable, adding it ignored COVID-19 restrictions, including mask wearing and social distancing. “We know it was too big. I don’t have an exact figure, but whatever it was, it was too big. There appeared to be a real effort to conceal it, which is absolutely unacceptable,” de Blasio said Monday night on NY-1, adding, “That’s just not acceptable. I mean, we’ve been through so much. And in fact, the Williamsburg community in recent weeks responded very positively, did a lot more testing and was being very responsible. This was amazingly irresponsible, just unacceptable. NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — The bodies of hundreds of people who died from COVID-19 during the first wave of the pandemic remain unclaimed by their families. The city’s morgue could not hold them all. About 650 bodies lie inside freezer trailers on Pier 39 in Sunset Park , Brooklyn – a backlog of lives taken away by the coronavirus as it spread rapidly in the spring, CBS2’s Hazel Sanchez reported Monday. The city is cautiously bracing for a second wave . “We haven’t seen some of those particular warning signs yet,” said Mayor Bill de Blasio . “Thank god, but we are very, very vigilant. But, we’ll make sure medical examiner is ready either way.” The medical examiner’s office has a task force assigned to identify bodies and another team to track down next of kin. NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — A young woman is dead and six teens are wounded after a shooting at a party in Brooklyn. The NYPD received numerous 911 calls about shots fired just after 11 p.m. Sunday in Bedford-Stuyvesant . Police said group of teens and young adults was having a party inside an apartment on Albany Avenue. Neighbors told CBS2 it was packed, with at least 100 people inside. A young woman is dead and six teens are wounded after a shooting at a party in Brooklyn. (CBS2) “There was a house party at the location, when an unknown perpetrator entered the location and began to shoot in the lobby,” NYPD Assistant Chief Judith Harrison. Bullets went through the walls of the apartment and hit seven people, killing a 20-year-old woman visiting from Virginia and injuring six other victims between the ages of 14 and 19. “Over 100 young people in this hallway last night. Not one call came in before the shooting to say that there was disruption going on,” one woman said. I’m a father who lost a child to gun violence, and I don’t want to see nobody else die,” a man added. “Real terrible, it’s really bad. As CBS2’s John Dias reported, the victims were at an after party for a Sweet 16 that was broken up earlier in the night in East New York . Police said a 17-year-old was shot at that party, and it’s believed this may have been retaliation. These are real issues. A child should not leave an apartment and step over dead bodies.” Adams went on to say the NYPD needs to focus on what he called precision policing and temporarily redeploy officers away from Midtown, Manhattan to these outer boroughs. Police believe there was more than one shooter involved in Sunday night’s shooting, and at least two different guns were used. So far, no arrests have been made. Owner Of BIBA In Williamsburg Says New York State Is Forcing Him Out Of Business As Part Of Park Renovation

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – A Brooklyn business owner who says he contributed to Williamsburg’s resurgence says Gov. Andrew Cuomo is thanking him by kicking him out. His outdoor concessions are part of a park that the state is renovating to honor a civil rights activist. As CBS2’s Lisa Rozner reports, 110 Kent Avenue is the home of BIBA, an event space that thrives off of its backyard patio. A patio that owner Mark Nagawiecki says state parks commissioners dating back to 2006 asked him to consider beautifying so people had a place to eat, drink and use the bathroom at the East River State Park. The owner of BIBA in Williamsburg says he’s being kicked out as East River State Park undergoes renovations. (Credit: CBS2) “I spent almost $200,000, and I never recapture a big part of that,” Nagawiecki said. Ever since, he’s offered the space to new companies and nonprofits for free or at a reduced price. This year, he got a special permit so Chabad could hold Yom Kippur services there. “As soon as Mark heard what I’m looking for, he said, sure, whatever you need, whenever you need,” said Rabbi Shmuly Lein, of Chabad of North Brooklyn. That’s the same offer Nagawiecki and his business partner, Raffaello Van Couten, made to the state parks department when Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced in August he’d do a multimillion dollar renovation on the park to honor Marsha P. Johnson, an LGBTQ rights activist and transgender woman of color who was part of the Stonewall uprising . “It’s a great thing and we got excited about it,” Van Couten said. He even met with the state parks commissioner, but by email, he was told his concessions had to go by Nov. 16. The commissioner wrote, “It is coming from me and my leadership team, in close coordination with the Executive Chamber.” Rozner reached out to the governor and the state’s Parks commissioner to ask why they can’t work together with the business. No one would go on camera. By email, a Parks spokesperson claimed due to the new direction of the park, “a food and beverage service is no longer compatible” with that section. Police Searching For Black Infiniti Following Brooklyn Hit-And-Run That Left Man With Multiple Injuries

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — A hit-and-run in Brooklyn was caught on camera. The victim is in the hospital with serious injuries. CBS2’s Cory James spoke with the family, who said their loved one crawled from the street to the sidewalk while screaming for help. On video, a black car is seen speeding down a Brooklyn road near Nicholas Avenue and Etna Street in Cypress Hills . It suddenly starts reversing at full speed, hitting a man walking to his car before quickly taking off. “I heard the sound, like the crash,” Carmen De La Rosa said. The impact injured her 60-year-old 6-foot-8 husband, Walter Stone. De La Rosa said Stone was walking across the street to move their car at around 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, when she heard him crying out for help. “He said, ‘Carmen!’ so I look and I saw him crawling and I came down running to pick him up, and called the ambulance,” De La Rosa said. Stone was rushed to a hospital with a bloody face covered with scratches and a broken leg. The NYPD is investigating the incident involving a reported black Infiniti, and as Stone’s son comforts his mom they are both hoping someone who has information about the driver will step up to help. “The back of the windshield was cracked off. The moment he fell on the floor the windshield came with him. So if anybody knows an Infiniti that’s missing back of their window please let somebody know. Let the police know,” De La Rosa said. Walter Stone is recovering at Jamaica Hospital. His family members said he had the first of two surgeries on his left leg, which was broken in two parts. Police: Attempted Robbery Turns Into To Shootout In Williamsburg

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Police are searching for the suspects behind an attempted robbery that turned into a shootout Monday in Brooklyn. It happened around 2:30 a.m. on Maujer Street between Union Ave. and Lorimer St. in Williamsburg. (Credit: NYPD) Police said a 35-year-old man and 32-year-old woman were approached by two suspects with a gun who demanded the man’s watch. When the woman tried to intervene, the suspects allegedly shot her in the ankle. That’s when police said another man came out of 30 Maujer Street and started shooting at the suspects, who returned fire. Off-Duty Officer Attacked In Broad Daylight In Brooklyn

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – An off-duty officer was attacked in broad daylight last week in Brooklyn, and police are searching for the suspect. The 29-year-old was approached by another man around 8:55 a.m. Thursday at the intersection of Williams Court and East 11 th Street in Sheepshead Bay. Police said the suspect hit the officer in the face and head with an unknown object, fracturing his cheek bone. (Credit: NYPD) The officer was taken to the hospital in stable condition. He’s since been treated and released. The suspect is described as a white man in his 20s, approximately 5 feet 6 inches tall, 170 pounds, a thin build and blonde hair. NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — A Brooklyn mother is recovering after being randomly attacked in a subway station. The victim claims she suffered injuries so severe they required surgery, and now police are investigating the attack as a hate crime, CBS2’s Reena Roy reported Sunday. Subway riders were fired up moments after police said 57-year-old Ann Marie Washington was attacked inside the Church Avenue subway station at around 7:30 p.m. on Friday. (Photo: CBS2) Police are investigating the incident as a hate crime, saying the suspect, described as a white man in his 30s, yelled out racial slurs. “The victim was hunched over. She couldn’t really stand up. She just seemed like in shock, really dazed and out of it,” witness Kezia Bernard-Nau said. She told CBS2’s Roy off camera he even stabbed her in the shoulder, and that because of shock she didn’t realize until the next morning when she woke up in a pool of blood. “Her daughter found her and was like we need to take you to hospital, like what is going on? They rushed her to hospital and that’s when she found out that she was indeed really hurt and her lung collapsed because of it,” Bernard-Nau said. MORE : Police Arrest Suspect Who Slashed Queens Subway Rider, Punched Another Witnesses said Washington was walking up the stairs after getting off the Q train when the suspect came up from behind and started to attack. “She’s just scared and she wants this guy caught because he can go out and do something worse to someone else,” Bernard-Nau said. Community activists said they are hoping for a speedy arrest. Washington had to go into surgery for her lung. She is still recovering at the hospital as her attacker remains on the streets.

Kidney Recipient Reunites With Donor To Walk For A Great Cause

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Two men who didn’t know each other a year ago now share a lifelong bond, all thanks to a t-shirt. CBS2’s Clark Fouraker was with the pair when they reunited Sunday morning after a kidney saved one of their lives. Robert Leibowitz and Richie Sully walked together for the first time with an unassuming bond among those raising awareness for kidney disease. Earlier this year, Robert needed a kidney and Richie gave him one. “He’s the greatest guy in the world. He’s my hero. My family loves him,” Leibowitz said. Robert Leibowitz, right, and Richie Sully (Photo: CBS2) It all started last summer when Robert, who is from Lawrenceville, New Jersey, wore the same shirt every day on a nine-day family trip to Disney. His simple plea for help and phone number were posted on social media and shared more than 90,000 times. Richie, who lives states away in Indiana, saw it and made the call. “I figured a guy that desperate to walk around Disney with a cellphone number on his shirt really wants to spend more time with his kids and not die,” Sully explained. Sure, they texted and talked plenty, but Richie finally came to New York for the National Kidney Foundation’s fundraising walk. “We’re just enjoying time together,” Leibowitz said. MORE : Family Takes Search For Kidney To Disneyland Hundreds of people — kidney recipients, kidney donors, and even current patients going through dialysis — walked up and down the Brooklyn Bridge as part of the fundraiser. “What’s really amazing is we’re just teaching people share your story. You don’t even have to make an ask. Just share your story. Somebody can come forward who you’d least likely expect who can give a kidney. It’s really saving lives,” Meg Gilmartin of the National Kidney Foundation said. This pair couldn’t agree more. Leibowitz said he still has the t-shirt that started it all. “We want to show people out there, it’s so easy to be a donor,” he said. Sully said he feels encouraged because of the kindness he was able to show someone else. The National Kidney Foundation said at least 30 million people are at risk for kidney disease. Sunday’s walk raised more than $1 million for research and treatment.

(AP) — Kevin Durant had 28 points and 11 assists, Quinn Cook scored a season-high 27 in place of injured Stephen Curry and the Golden State Warriors used another big run in the third quarter to pull away and beat the Brooklyn Nets 116-100 on Saturday. Klay Thompson added 24 points on an uneven shooting night while Damian Jones had eight points and six rebounds for the Warriors. Two days after losing Curry to a groin injury in a 23-point home loss to Milwaukee, Golden State bounced back with little problem while their leading scorer sat at home watching. Draymond Green was also missing from Steve Kerr’s lineup but Durant made both absences a moot point while ending Brooklyn’s three-game winning streak. The nine-time All-Star had 13 points in the first quarter, scored the final six of the second then came up big again in the third when the Warriors led by as many as 20. Cook was pretty good, too. Signed on a two-way contract a year ago when he made 18 starts while Curry was out with ankle and knee injuries, Cook looked just as comfortable this time around. He made his first seven shots and matched Durant with 19 points in the first half, then made a shot-clock beating 19-footer in the third to push the Warriors lead to 103-81. Golden State needed it on a night when their other Splash Brother, Thompson, had an off night shooting. Thompson made four of his first five shots but finished 11 of 20. Joe Harris scored 24 points for the Nets. Spencer Dinwiddie added 14 points and six assists and DeAngelo Russell had 12 points. TIP-INS Nets: Brooklyn has lost eight straight to Golden State. The Nets haven’t won our consecutive games since a six-game streak in 2014-15.
