NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — A young cancer survivor is on a mission to inspire others and pay it forward… with socks. CBS2’s Vanessa Murdock introduces us to an incredible girl who hopes delivering fuzzy socks to other kids fighting cancer also brings them hope for a healthy future. It’s a special delivery by a very special someone: cancer survivor, and author, 7-year-old Aryn Diggs. Aryn said she feels a little weird about telling people how awesome she is. “Sometimes, when I tell people, I feel like they get too excited,” she told Murdock. Aryn endured surgery and several rounds of chemotherapy after she was diagnosed at just 2 years old. “We wrote this story together about a journey to find the true beauty that lives inside you,” said Aryn’s mom, Marissa Jacobs. “If you make a book about what you went through, people will support you and be inspired,” Aryn said. On Monday, she continue to do just that outside the Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital in Washington Heights . Aryn and her family delivered “Socks With Stories”. Fifty pairs were donated to children fighting cancer. “They’re comfy and designed very well,” said Aryn. They were designed by real life superheroes – children battling cancer. “To know that the designs on the socks are created by children who are going through life battling illnesses is everything,” said Jacobs. The socks are delivered by childhood cancer survivors who volunteer to help. Founder Jake Teitelbaum told CBS2 it’s a product of personal experience. He was diagnosed with cancer in college and says he spent too much time in the hospital. “It always stuck out that you get your gown and these really drab hospital socks,” Teitelbaum said. He said socks are a small thing, but they can change a patient’s experience. Plus, having them delivered by families celebrating years of being cancer free gives hope for the future. “I hope that someone looks at me and looks at my family and says, ‘We can do this too,’” said Jacobs. Aryn said, “Be confident. Don’t be scared.”

Long Island Woman Arraigned In Hit-And-Run Crash That Seriously Injured 2 Boys On Bicycles
RIVERHEAD, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) — A mother’s anguish was on display in a Suffolk county courtroom Monday as a grand jury unsealed charges against her son’s alleged hit-and-run driver . Investigators say 31-year-old Shannon Palmer, of Hauppauge , ran her SUV into two boys, ages 12 and 9, on Express Drive in Ronkonkoma back in August, leaving the children seriously hurt and their mangled bikes on the side of the road, CBS2’s Carolyn Gusoff reported. “No parent should have to go through what I’ve been through,” said Symone Houston. Houston said she will not rest until she gets justice for her son Troy and his friend Toriano Jamison. The boys and a little brother were riding bikes on an early August evening when tragedy struck on the shoulder of the LIE Service Road in Ronkonkoma. “My brother got hit by the car, so I ran to the neighbor’s house and called my dad,” one boy said. MORE: Driver Accused Of Leaving Scene Of Crash That Seriously Injured 2 Boys On Bicycles A 9-year-old was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital and a 12-year-old was also treated for serious injuries after a hit-and-run in Ronkonkoma in Aug. 2020. (CBS2) Two of them were hit by a driver who never stopped. Police arrested Palmer hours later. Supporters of the injured boys have rallied for justice. “My son became a victim when Shannon Palmer left him on the side of the road with no regards for his life,” Houston said. “What kind of person does this?” Palmer is indicted on two felony counts of leaving the scene of an incident with serious physical injuries. She was convicted of misdemeanor DWI in 2014. “My son’s life matters. His future matters,” said Houston. Troy, 9, has undergone 10 surgeries for broken legs, ribs and other fractures. Toriano, 12, was hospitalized for weeks with broken bones, organ damage and a concussion. Palmer pleaded not guilty. “We just don’t jump from the incident to guilty. We go through due process and that is what we are going to do on this case, like we do on every case,” said Palmer’s defense attorney Christopher Brocato. Palmer is out of custody while awaiting her next court date on Jan. 19. The families and supporters have called for attempted murder charges against Palmer, claiming she left the boys for dead.

Hundreds Of Bodies Of COVID-19 Victims Lying In Freezer Trailers In Brooklyn; City Struggling To Find Next Of Kin
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — The bodies of hundreds of people who died from COVID-19 during the first wave of the pandemic remain unclaimed by their families. The city’s morgue could not hold them all. About 650 bodies lie inside freezer trailers on Pier 39 in Sunset Park , Brooklyn – a backlog of lives taken away by the coronavirus as it spread rapidly in the spring, CBS2’s Hazel Sanchez reported Monday. The city is cautiously bracing for a second wave . “We haven’t seen some of those particular warning signs yet,” said Mayor Bill de Blasio . “Thank god, but we are very, very vigilant. But, we’ll make sure medical examiner is ready either way.” The medical examiner’s office has a task force assigned to identify bodies and another team to track down next of kin. However, they’re struggling to find the families of some 230 people. FLASHBACK: Coronavirus Update: If NYC Cemeteries Get Filled, Could Temporary Burials Happen On Hart Island? Relatives of others have been found, but can’t afford a proper burial yet. “We’re trying to work with each and every family of those we lost during that situation, to make sure that they can have the kind of services they want to have at the right time,” de Blasio said. CBS2 received the following statement from Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Barbara Sampson: “Supporting families and helping facilitate respectful final arrangements for individuals who passed at the height of the pandemic reflects the core mission of the Office of Chief Medical Examiner. As we continue to utilize medical, scientific, and forensic expertise to help answer vital questions around the effects of illness, we recognize that this ongoing work has served as a nationwide example in part because of the hard work and dedication of our family outreach staff in helping families navigate these unprecedented circumstances.” Joe Aievoli, whose family owns six funeral homes, said no one, including himself, was prepared for the COVID-19 death toll. “I rented several refrigerated trailers,” Aievoli said. “Even though we had someone in our custody, it would sometimes take three or four weeks before we can have availability at a cemetery or a crematory.” MORE: Staten Island Funeral Home Owner A ‘Godsend’ For Families When New York’s Coronavirus Death Toll Skyrocketed Aievoli said most funeral homes were able to catch up by the end of June. He feels for the city, which is still trying to find families and help them make arrangements for loved ones. “Don’t want to inter someone without exhausting all the avenues of trying to find next of kins and, who knows, there can be next of kins that also fell victim to the pandemic,” he said. Aievoli said he tries his best to help families find the most affordable way to respectfully lay their loves ones to rest. Families can choose a free burial on Hart Island . The medical examiner’s office said it will continue operating the storage facility in Brooklyn at least until the pandemic is declared over. UNION, N.J. (CBSNewYork) — New Jersey is taking more steps to slow down a second wave of coronavirus as we head into the holidays. On Monday, the limit on outdoor gatherings was lowered from 500 people to 150. This, as new cases and hospitalizations are on the rise, CBS2’s Meg Baker reported. MORE: Tri-State Area Officials Sound Alarms As Coronavirus Shutdowns Likely To Impact Holiday Season There were lines of cars at Kean University on Monday for a new drive-thru testing site where people can take one test for COVID-19 , plus two flu strains. Because symptoms can often be the same, many people are preparing for the holidays by wanting to show a negative test before gathering with loved ones. Gov. Phil Murphy on Monday pleaded with residents to do Thanksgiving differently this year. “Over 16,500 individuals who were alive last Thanksgiving are no longer with us. And that’s more than 16,500 families that will have that empty chair,” Murphy said. Watch Gov. Swingers Party With More Than 80 People In Attendance Busted In Queens
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) — The New York Sheriff’s Office says it busted a swingers party with more than 80 people in attendance early Sunday morning. Deputies responding to a complaint Saturday night found people drinking, eating at a buffet and having sex at a site in Queens around midnight. Boxes of condoms were provided and three couples were engaged in sex in a small back room, the Sheriff’s Office said. A telephone message seeking comment was left at Caligula New York. In Midtown Manhattan, another party was broken up at 2 a.m. Sunday by deputies who found over 120 people dancing, drinking and smoking hookah without masks or social distancing. President Trump Says New York State Will Not Receive COVID Vaccine As Soon As It’s Available
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — President Donald Trump announced Friday a coronavirus vaccine will be available in April for the entire country, except New York. Gov. Andrew Cuomo fired back Friday night. The president spoke at a press conference on Operation Warp Speed and vaccine distribution. “Millions of doses will soon be going out the door,” Trump said. Trump said two vaccines could be approved by the end of the year and be available to all Americans a few months later, but then, the president suddenly said New York will not get its vaccine unless the governor approves it. “As soon as April the vaccine will be available to the entire general population with the exception of places like New York State, where, for political reasons, the governor decided to say, and I don’t think it’s good from a political standpoint, but he wants to take his time with the vaccine,” Trump said. “We won’t be delivering it to New York until we have authorization to do so, and that pains me to say that. This is a very successful, amazing vaccine and 90% and more. But, so the governor, Governor Cuomo will have to let us know what he’s ready for it.” Cuomo has said he won’t take the Trump administration’s word that the vaccine is safe. MORE: Gov. Cuomo: ‘I’m Not Going To Trust The Federal Government’s Opinion’ On Potential Approved COVID-19 Vaccine “He doesn’t trust the fact that it’s this White House, this administration, so we won’t be delivering to New York until we have authorization to do so,” Trump said. “We can’t be delivering it to a state that won’t be giving it to its people immediately.” The governor appeared on MSNBC to respond to the president’s comments. “Everything is personal with this president. There can’t be a disagreement on principle, and he retaliates,” Cuomo said. Cuomo has appointed a panel to examine any vaccine before its distributed in the state. “An overwhelming percentage of Americans are worried about political interference in the vaccination process, in the approval process by the president,” the governor said. I do want to be able to say I know you have doubts about Trump and about politicization of the health process, but we had a separate panel with headed by Nobel Prize Laureate,” Cuomo said. Cuomo says seven other states have also appointed panels to approve a vaccine. He says the New York panel would not slow down distribution of the vaccine. State Attorney General Letitia James says she is prepared to sue the Trump administration if New York doesn’t receive the vaccine with the rest of the United States. She released the following statement in response to Trump’s remarks: “This is nothing more than vindictive behavior by a lame-duck president trying to extract vengeance on those who oppose his politics. Once there is a fully-developed COVID-19 vaccine, we are confident that a Biden-Harris Administration will provide New York with the proper number of doses so that our state’s residents can achieve immunity. If dissemination of the vaccine takes place in the twilight of a Trump Administration and the president wants to play games with people’s lives, we will sue and we will win.” The governor also pointed out the Biden administration takes over Jan. 20, and even the president, who insists he won the election, hinted that may be true. “Hopefully, whatever happens in the future, who knows which administration it will be. I guess time will tell,” Trump said. HAWTHORNE (CBSLA) — Hawthorne-based SpaceX plans to launch four astronauts to the International Space Station on Sunday. The launch of the Crew-1 mission had originally been set for 4:49 p.m. California time Saturday from Cape Canaveral in Florida but weather conditions in Florida prompted a one-day delay. The launch is now set for 4:27 p.m. California time Sunday. In a Twitter post, NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine said the delay was prompted by “onshore winds and recovery operations.” The joint Nasa and SpaceX mission called Crew-1 follows this summer’s successful demonstration flight of the Crew Dragon capsule, SpaceX’s new ship. The capsule being used in the mission, named “Resilience,” is built to accommodate the four astronauts; Mike Hopkins, the mission commander, pilot Victor Glover and mission specialists Shannon Walker and Soichi Noguchi. In the lab’s 20 year history, Glover will become the first Black for a long duration. “I think it is important for astronaut core and the accomplishments of our agency to represent the beautiful variety in this country,” Glover said. “It is important to have kids who look like me, or look like I looked when I was younger, to see someone that they can relate to that way.” The Crew-1 mission is the first of three planned Crew Dragon flights in 2020 and 2021. ‘They Can’t Focus If They’re Cold’: LAUSD Teachers Helping Students Stay Warm As Temps Drop
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) — Stephanie Levinson’s students have faced many obstacles — even before the coronavirus pandemic forced them out of their schools. LAUSD teachers, noticing their students were in need of winter clothing and supplies, have created Amazon wishlists in hopes of helping those most in need. (CBSLA) All of her TK and kindergarten students qualify for free meals, and some are homeless. “Even the majority of them, they might be in one little room, or in a mobile home or in a hotel room, but they’re all still showing up,” Levinson said. But when her students showed up for class last week, the veteran teacher noticed something she did not anticipate. “We noticed that they are shivering while they’re on Zoom,” she said. “They either have their blankets around them, they’re wearing multiple layers of clothing, their fingers are cold. They’re not used to the cold weather because in our classrooms we have heat.” Levinson put together an Amazon wishlist for her 35 students, asking for things like blankets, hats and socks. “I wouldn’t have thought of this a month ago,” she said. “It was 105 degrees and the kids were sweating and wearing tank tops.” And the issue is not unique to Levinson’s class. Stacy Stewart, a kindergarten teacher at a Title I school in Pacoima, said her students have been struggling, too. “They can’t focus if they’re cold,” she said. “They can’t focus if they’re not comfortable.” So she started an Amazon wishlist , too. “It truly hits you in the heart very, very deeply, because you would do anything for these students and their families,” she said. Many of the families have also been hard-hit by the economic fallout of the pandemic. “There is so much more than the internet we have to worry about for these kids,” Stewart said. “They need to feel secure, they need to feel safe, and I know that the families are doing their absolute best, but with the pandemic, financial struggles can make it really difficult.” Priscilla Solis, who teaches special education, also made an Amazon wishlist to support her students. “Now it’s just, we can see everything,” she said. “Seeing that they don’t have the luxury of a heater and have to be bundled up is very hard.” And people are already coming through, purchasing items from the lists. “I am overwhelmed with gratitude that there are so many people with kind hearts in this world that will do anything to help these kids,” Stewart said. Along with items to keep the kids comfortable as temperatures drop, they have also added school supplies and gifts for stocking stuffers. De Blasio Says NYC Parents Should Be Ready ‘As Early As Monday’ For All-Remote Learning
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Schools in New York City could be forced to shut down in-person learning as early as Monday. As CBS2’s Kevin Rincon reports, the COVID positivity rate in the city has been going up, and if it hits 3%, which could happen this weekend, students won’t be allowed back into the classroom. The warning came from Mayor Bill de Blasio, who says parents need to prepare for the possibility their kids won’t be allowed back until next month, despite the fact schools have been relatively safe. “The testing shows very few people have tested positive in our schools, that’s a great blessing. But when you see the rest of the city, unfortunately, experiencing this generalized problem, we’ve got to act out of an abundance of caution,” the mayor said. He said parents should get ready. “Have a plan an alternative plan for as early as Monday,” the mayor said. “If we get to that point, the goal is bringing it back as soon as possible.” Schools Chancellor Richard Carranza sent guidance to principals Thursday night, saying he believes it will be “a brief time of fully remote learning systemwide.” MORE FROM CBS NEW YORK Stimulus Package Update: What Will A Biden Administration Mean For More Aid? Health Experts Stress Need To Fight ‘Mask Exhaustion,’ Continue To Follow COVID Safety Guidelines Study: Simple Temperature Checks And Question Screening Not Very Effective Catching COVID-19 Spreaders Though the New York State standard is 9%, the teachers union is sticking to a smaller standard of 3%, because New York City schools have a higher density. “Three percent is hard and fast,” said United Federation of Teachers President Michael Mulgrew. “This is all part of a plan… we had independent medical experts to help put it together.” At the moment, the positivity rate citywide over the last week is at 2.83%, while at schools, that number is below 1%. Even Gov. Andrew Cuomo agrees, saying so far things have worked. “The infection rate in the schools is not the problem, the infection rate in the schools is very low,” Cuomo said. That has parents like Lauren Lavitt frustrated. “I’m really disappointed if they close schools,” she said. She’s hoping if there’s a closure, it’s short lived. The mayor announced some exemptions to the closures, including Pre-K and 3k community organizations. As CBS2’s John Dias reports, the morning routine at PS 89 hasn’t changed since the Battery Park City school reopened with temperature checks and health screenings. Many parents say precautions are working, but fear a citywide closure is on its way. “The schools are doing a great job, and everyone is doing the best they can,” said Battery Park City resident Brooke Travis. “The in-person is much more impactful and empowering. I can’t do what the teachers do,” said Erika lackmann. Staten Island Catholic schools have already gone fully remote, something 4th grader Pedro Klotz doesn’t want to switch back to. MORE: Mayor De Blasio Says If City COVID-19 Positivity Rate Goes Above 3% Schools Will Close The Next Day “Because I could see my friends,” he said. Meanwhile, Sunday is the last day to sign up for blended learning. This is for families who have chosen remote-only learning up until now and want their child to return to buildings for in-person instruction on a part-time basis. This comes as restaurants, bars and gyms across the state have a new daily closing time starting Friday – 10 p.m. One man says at least it’s not as bad as his family has it in Italy under lockdown. “There is much more freedom and liberty that we have here than the tight restrictions elsewhere,” said Giuseppe Baldassarre. In Connecticut, where the positivity rate is 4.8%, hospitalizations have doubled in the last two weeks. “Given the ramp up around the country and in our state, we’re bringing in the reinforcements,” Gov. Ned Lamont said. In New Jersey, where new restrictions on indoor dining and youth sports took effect Thursday night, Gov. Phil Murphy said despite wild rumors, he has no plans to close schools. He added he is fed up by the lack of mask wearing, sharing a warning for those who say face coverings aren’t comfortable. “You know what isn’t comfortable? When you die,” he said. De Blasio Says NYC Parents Should Be Ready ‘As Early As Monday’ For All-Remote Learning
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – Friday is World Kindness Day , and it’s being celebrated across the globe. Many would agree we need it more than ever this year. As CBS2’s Cindy Hsu reports, dancing is how many have celebrated World Kindness Day for nearly 20 years. This year, it’s gone virtual. It is celebrated worldwide on Nov. 13 and promotes the importance of being kind to each other. Karen Salmansohn has written dozens of books on happiness and kindness and says it’s as easy as listening. “Talk less, listen more. Put your phone away. Just a simple act of kindness, just really letting people know that you’re there for them,” she said. Food is another way to get that smile. “You could bake something for somebody, or here in New York, you could order up a delivery and surprise somebody with it,” Salmansohn said. When it comes to kids, we spend so much time making sure they’re behaving, Karen says it’s important to let them know when they’re doing the right thing. “Catch them being kind and to let them know that, wow, that’s great, I love that you just said that right now,” Salmansohn said. It’s also key to be kind to yourself. Take a break and do what makes you happy. Exercise and meditation can help clear your mind. Getting enough sleep is part of self-care. Before bed, making a list of three things you’re grateful about can help you focus on the positive. Kindness is something you can practice everyday. Everyone also loves to be appreciated, so making a habit of saying “thank you” is one of the greatest acts of kindness. WEST HAVEN, Conn. (CBSNewYork) — At least two people are dead after a steam pipe exploded at a veterans hospital in Connecticut. It happened around 8 a.m. in the basement of a maintenance facility on the hospital’s campus. Investigators say a steam line was being replaced. State emergency management officials are actively working with local and federal officials to respond to the explosion that occurred this morning at the West Haven VA Medical Center and will continue to provide as much aid as necessary to conduct an investigation. (1/3) — Governor Ned Lamont (@GovNedLamont) November 13, 2020 One of the victims was a VA employee, and the other was a contractor. “One of those employees was a Navy veteran,” said Alfred Montoya Jr., director of the VA Connecticut Healthcare System. “Probably one of the hardest moments of my VA career and told his loved one that he was deceased. It was so difficult.” Sen. Richard Blumenthal released the following statement: “It is sad day in America, as we continue to learn more about the incident at the West Haven VA this morning. Our hearts go out to the families of those individuals who have been impacted. As a member of the Veterans’ Affairs Committee, I’ve been in contact with the director of the facility and will continue to remain in touch as more information becomes available. There must be a full and complete investigation as to what was the cause for this fatal, tragic explosion – our veterans deserve the best care, and the safest and most reliable work, always.” Three other people also had minor injuries. The exact cause is still under investigation. NYPD: Suspect In Custody After 3 Women Fight Off Attempted Sex Assaults Near Queens Park
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — There’s been a big break in the case of three attempted rapes in Queens . Police say the suspect is now in custody, and his stepfather helped catch him. As CBS2’s Andrea Grymes reports, there’s a huge sigh of relief for police and New Yorkers near Forest Park in Queens. (Credit: NYPD Crime Stoppers) Investigators say they’ve got the 20-year-old suspect responsible for three terrifying attacks on two women and a 14-year-old girl, all nearly raped in broad daylight. Police say the quick arrest is thanks in large part to the suspect’s stepdad. “The father taking it upon himself to call the 102 precinct on his stepson really helped us expedite getting this individual off the street sooner than later,” NYPD Chief of Detectives Rodney Harrison. Harrison says the first attack happened around 10 a.m. Thursday morning. A 20-year-old woman was on her way to work at Jamaica Avenue and 104th Street. That’s when the suspect allegedly came from behind, grabbed her buttocks, picked her up and tried to jog with her. The woman screamed and got away. Next, around 12:30 p.m., police say the suspect targeted a 14-year-old girl who was walking while FaceTiming her friend at 84th Avenue and 118th Street. “Our perpetrator came from behind, throwing our victim into the bushes, trying to pick her up and pull down her pants, at which time she screamed and our perpetrator fled off,” Harrison said. The third and final similar attack happened just minutes later, allegedly in the park near Woodhaven Boulevard and Forest Park Drive. That 24-year-old woman also screamed and got away. (Credit: NYPD Crime Stoppers) Thursday night, police released pictures of the suspect from surveillance video they found. Friday morning Harrison says the 102 precinct got a phone call. “Our perpetrator’s stepfather called, saying that he saw his [stepson] on television… that he saw the video that was shared and he threw his stepson out of the house,” Harrison said. Police stepped up patrols near the park, and by 10 a.m. picked him up at Myrtle Avenue and Memorial Drive. Chief Harrison says when cops found him, the suspect was wearing the same shorts and sneakers he was wearing during the attacks. Charges are pending. suspect’s name has not yet been released.
