Mandeville Canyon Blaze Sparked By Weed-Wacker Nearly Fully Contained

BRENTWOOD (CBSLA.com) — Firefighters expect full containment Monday for an accidental brush fire in Mandeville Canyon that charred about 55 acres and burned near homes in Brentwood. The flames were 95 percent contained by a line of cleared vegetation Monday morning and new crews of firefighters were expected to replace the firefighters who worked all night, according to Margaret Stewart of the Los Angeles Fire Department. The fire was accidentally caused by sparks from a weed-wacker. By the time the blaze was reported at 12:45 p.m. Sunday it had burned three to four acres of brush near a house in the 2960 block of Mandeville Canyon Road, she said. An hour later, it had spread to eight acres, burning up hillsides toward the Mountaingate Country Club, Stewart said. Update #BrushFire ; 5:58AM; 2969 N Mandeville Canyon Rd; #Brentwood ; #MandevilleFire #Brentwood … https://t.co/eZftHqyz5H — LAFD (@LAFD) May 29, 2017 At 10:40 p.m. the acreage had risen to about 55 acres but a containment line of cleared brush was about 70 percent around the flames and resources sent by mutual aid agencies had been released, Stewart said. A volcano-like smoke plume was visible across the Westside and San Fernando Valley, as the fire consumed moderate to thick brush in an area just off Mandeville Canyon Road, a dead end thoroughfare that snakes up a deep canyon, lined by expensive view houses. Mandeville Canyon Road was shut down at Sunset Boulevard to accommodate fire fighting operations, Stewart said. Fire trucks were staged for assignment at Sunset Boulevard, two-plus miles downhill from the fire. Another command post was set up at the Mountaingate country club, north of the fire and just west of the San Diego (405) Freeway. Firefighters asked Los Angeles police to be ready in case houses needed to be evacuated. Eventually five homes were cleared, Stewart said. By late evening residents with IDs were allowed to return to their homes. No houses were burned and no injuries were reported. (©2017 CBS Local Media, a division of CBS Radio Inc. Trump Seemingly Downplays Allegations Against Kushner About Russia

WASHINGTON (CBSNewYork) — President Donald Trump spent his first day back from the G7 summit Sunday confronting, and seemingly downplaying, the new allegations against his son-in-law. As CBS2’s Hazel Sanchez reported, Trump was back on U.S. soil and back on the defensive Sunday. He ignored reporters’ questions about his son-in-law and senior adviser, Jared Kushner , proposing setting up a secret channel of communication with the Kremlin and the Trump transition team before the election. But while had nothing to say upon landing, he had plenty later on Twitter. Trump’s posts attempted to discredit which sourced anonymous U.S. officials, calling them “fake news.” Whenever you see the words 'sources say' in the fake news media, and they don't mention names…. — Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) May 28, 2017 ….it is very possible that those sources don't exist but are made up by fake news writers. #FakeNews is the enemy! — Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) May 28, 2017 In interviews Sunday, Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly said he did not know if the reports are true. But he said if they are, “I think any channel of communication, back or otherwise, with a country like Russia is a good thing.” National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster told reporters in an off-camera news conference that he does not find backchannel communications with Russia problematic. “What that allows you to do is to communicate in a discreet manner, so it doesn’t predispose you toward any sort of content of that conversation or anything,” McMaster said. “So no, I would not be concerned about it.” But the U.S. Rep. Adam Schiff (D-California), the top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, is very concerned. “To have the president’s son-in-law, a key player within the Trump Organization, trying to establish a backchannel with the Russians through a Russian diplomatic facility — you have to ask, well, who are they hiding the conversations from?” Schiff said. The unanswered questions about Russia may add to declining U.S. relations with European allies. After meeting with Trump during the G7 summit and failing to convince him to commit to the Paris Climate Acord, German Chancellor Angela Merkel told supporters Sunday: “The times in which we can fully count on others are somewhat over…. We Europeans must really take our destiny into our own hands.” Trump will make his first public appearance since his trip at Arlington National Cemetery on Monday to lay a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Officials: Sheriff’s Deputy Among Eight Dead In Shooting Rampage In Rural Mississippi

BROOKHAVEN, Miss. (CBSNewYork/AP) — A man who apparently got into a dispute with his wife and in-laws was arrested in a house-to-house shooting rampage in rural Mississippi that left eight people dead, including a sheriff’s deputy. “I ain’t fit to live, not after what I done,” a handcuffed Willie Corey Godbolt, 35, told The Clarion-Ledger . The shootings took place at three homes Saturday night — two in Brookhaven and one in Bogue Chitto — about 70 miles (110 kilometers) south of Jackson, Mississippi, Bureau of Investigation spokesman Warren Strain said. More From CBS News Strain said charges had yet to be filed and it was too soon to say what the motive was. Authorities gave no details on the relationship between Godbolt and the victims. However, Godbolt himself shed some light on what happened in a video interview with the newspaper as he sat with his hands cuffed behind his back on the side of a road. Godbolt said he was talking with his wife and members of her family when somebody called authorities. “I was having a conversation with her stepdaddy and her mama and her, my wife, about me taking my children home,” he said. “Somebody called the officer, people that didn’t even live at the house. That’s what they do. They intervene.” “They cost him his life,” he said, apparently referring to the slain deputy. “I’m sorry.” The slain deputy was identified as William Durr, 36. The identities of the other victims were not immediately released. Lt. Governor Tate Reeves issued a statement on Twitter, offering his condolences to victims. Our prayers are with the relatives of the victims and Deputy Durr. Mother Of Teen Shot To Death By Off-Duty Border Agent Speaks Out

PASADENA   (CBSLA.com) —     The mother of a teen fatally shot Friday in an officer-involved shooting is speaking out. The woman’s son was shot along with another teen, a cousin.  A third boy,  who was with the two, was not wounded. The cousin is expected to recover. The three  juveniles were reportedly trying to rob the off-duty agent, he told authorities. The man works for U.S. Custom and Border Patrol at San Francisco International Airport and lives in Arcadia. He says he acted in self-defense after the teens attacked him. He was bruised but did not require medical treatment, officials said. Reshawna Myricks, mother of the deceased, disputes the officer’s account. “I’m hurt,” she told KCAL 9’s Cristy Fajardo. “I’m hurt! I’m hurt, I’m hurt. I’m hurt. You all robbed me to the core..” For the last 24 hours, the mother of 15-year-old Darius Smith of Pasadena has wept but not slept. She says she’s been kept awake by nagging questions over the shooting death of her son. “They going to walk home, they’re going to see their kids tonight. I got to go  back and tell my other three that one of them ain’t coming back no more ,” Myricks said. The Sheriffs Department says the officer told hem at about 8 Friday night, he got off the Gold Line and and so did Smith and the other two teens. He said at Colorado and First they attacked him from behind. He said Smith held a gun to him while another hit him in the head demanding money and valuables. That’s when he says he reached for his own weapon, killing Smith and wounding the 15-year-old cousin. The third teen he said ran away. That teen was later arrested. “Them  boys didn’t do that,” Myricks maintains ,”they aren’t those type of boys to do that.” The Sheriffs Department says the officer was bruised on his face and investigators found what turned out to be a replica handgun at the scene. Smith’s mother says she doesn’t believe the son who loved video games and dreamed of playing in the NFL. would rob anymore. “First, they said there was no crime me committed,” Myrics says, “Now there is a crime committed. Now it’s  a gun, then they said  there was a fight. I don’t know what to believe. All I know is my baby [os] gone and I’ll never know his story.” But deputies are hoping video will tell the entire story. They believe cameras were rolling on the Gold Line and nearby businesses. Deputies said because of the holiday weekend detectives haven’t been able to access the video. Myrics says the family hasn’t been able to speak to Smith’s cousin or the third teen who was arrested.
