NEW YORK (AP) — Police in New York say Steve Ditko, who co-created the Spider-Man and Doctor Strange characters for Marvel Comics, has died. He was 90. Lt. Paul Ng says Ditko was found on June 29 in his Manhattan apartment and was pronounced dead at the scene. No further details were immediately available. Ditko, along with Stan Lee, introduced the world to Peter Parker, and his alter-ego Spider-Man in 1962 in an issue of “Amazing Fantasy.” A year later, Ditko introduced the world to surgeon-turned-metaphysical superhero Doctor Strange. The adventures of Spider-Man and Doctor Strange have been turned into blockbuster films. Ditko left Marvel in 1966, and returned the following decade. One of his later creations was Squirrel Girl, a cult favorite among comics fans. (© Copyright 2018 The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved. LEDGEWOOD, N.J. (CBSNewYork) – There’s a cat emergency in New Jersey. More than 170 felines were rescued this week from horrible living conditions in Sussex County. As CBS2’s Cindy Hsu reports, the cats are safe and now in need of forever homes. The animals were found roaming inside and outside a rural home, which had no electricity or running water. An emergency team from St. Hubert’s Animal Welfare Center rescued the 172 cats. They’re now recovering at two of St. Hubert’s shelters in Morris County. The elderly homeowner will not be charged in the case. “It’s an unfortunate circumstance where the original caretaker had passed away a year or two ago and this gentleman was doing his best to care for the animals with food and water,” said Kathleen Schatzmann, of St. Hubert’s. She said the owner loved the cats and finally asked for help. “There’s always an embarrassment factor, an issue of people judging for what has become this overwhelming number of cats on the property,” she said. Many of the cats had parasites, fleas and were underweight. But they’re slowly recovering with medical care, and they’re all being spayed and neutered. “So the major concerns we have in these big hoarding cases with large numbers of animals of diseases we can’t fix and then make the animals unadoptable. We found none of those diseases,” said Karen Dashfield, of St. Hubert’s. Adoptions have already started. So far, they’ve placed eight outdoor cats in barn homes and starting this weekend, they’ll find new homes for the indoor cats. This was the largest cat rescue in the shelter’s 80-year history and it is in need of donations for the cats’ ongoing care. They’re doing their best to give the animals lots of love, even piping in classical music and using aromatherapy to create a calm environment. With so many cats to care for, the animals have been given generic names, like Happycat and Hotcat. Sometimes they’re named after people. “We have decided that we are going to name this little kitty Cindy, in your honor,” Dashfield told Hsu. “She was waiting for a name.” The cats that are ready for adoption will be located at St. Hubert’s shelter in Madison.

Group Trains Barbers, Hairdressers To Give People With Special Needs Comfortable Cuts
KINGS PARK, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) – A barber on the North Shore of Long Island wants to make sure people with special needs get comfortable haircuts. She’s teaching other barbers and hairdressers how to work with people on the autism spectrum, like her son. Angela Blanchet spent years cutting her son’s hair at home. Benjamin has autism and, like many young people with sensory disorders, struggles at the barber shop. “There’s buzzers, there’s hair dryers, there’s bright lights, there’s wet hair, there’s sprays, aprons around them — all these things combine together and they get into a fight or flight syndrome, and it’s a nightmare,” Angela told CBS2’s Clark Fouraker. Through training webinars and a barber toolbox, Sensory Haircut Solutions aims to improve the experience for young people with autism, Down syndrome and other disorders. “It was when they put the buzzer in my hair,” Benjamin said bothered him most. The main goal is keeping kids distracted, and the toolbox has a number of things, like fidget spinners or squeeze balls, to help with that. “Sometimes we suggest they turn the chair around or give them something else visually to be looking at,” said Angela. Kings Park Barber Shop will be the first place trained by the group to give kids with sensory issues haircuts. They’ll have the toolbox in their barber shop as well. “They often have a lot of motion. They’ll be stimming with their hands, clapping or wiggling around,” Angela said. Barbers say the tools help them by keeping young people still and, thus, avoid bad haircuts. Another tool is a unique scissor that cuts hair the same way a buzzer would, but doesn’t make the noise. “It’s more about educating, training and having them equipped and ready for when children with these needs walk in,” said Angela. She said the training and toolbox will cost about $500. They’ll have their first training session later this month. The group conducted a non-scientific survey that found one in three parents who have children with sensitivity disorders cut their children’s hair at home to avoid a bad haircut experience.

NEW JERSEY (CBSNewYork) — In face of the opioid epidemic , New Jersey lawmakers have come up with a Narcan lesson for children, which they say could save lives. There’s a proposal in the Assembly to educate students in seventh through 12th grades about opioids. “I think at a certain age that we could possibly do that. I wouldn’t do something with children that are too young, but certainly children in high school that might be exposed to that,” one woman told CBS2’s Meg Baker. “They absorb more the younger they are,” said another. “The younger the little children learn about this disease – this epidemic that is not going away – the better off it is,” a man added. The bill goes one step further — if passed, students would be taught how to administer an opioid antidote, like naloxone, to an overdose victim in an emergency. Dr. Diane Calello, with Rutgers Medical School, compares the controversial teaching to sex education. “It would have to be done very carefully… I think the downside is it might convey that safety net message, on the other hand, naloxone can save somebody’s life,” she said. She said incorporating this into health education is the right thing to do. “We always talk about talking to kids about drugs before somebody else does, meaning a negative peer influence or media or social media influence,” said Calello. Other people Baker spoke with agreed the education is good for students. “You have to be a little progressive in this situation and it pays dividends down the future,” one man said. “It could save a life… You could have some kids that do dabble and don’t realize what they are getting into,” said a woman. “It’s a shame what’s happening with these kids are dying.” Calello said opioid education is just one of the ways to combat the epidemic. Other major efforts include enforcement, looking at the way doctors prescribe the drugs, and laws and regulations.

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – With the 4th of July falling on on a Wednesday this year, bargain hunters have had extra time to chase down those deals. “Retailers aren’t doing much in terms of their sales bells and whistles around July 4th,” says shopping expert Trae Bodge of Slickdeals . But don’t worry – there are sales to be had, reports CBS2’s Alex Denis. Macy’s is offering 20 percent discounts and there are deals at Home Depot, Sears, Overstock and Saks Fifth Avenue. And look for discounts in specific categories, like active wear, where shoes and apparel are expected to be discounted 40 to 55 percent. With school out for the summer, gaming deals are popular this month. “A lot of the sales are for members – members of Best Buy, Xbox, PlayStation,” Bodge says. “They’re giving away some free bundles, discounted bundles. Some really good deals to be had there.” And now is the time to stock up on back to school clothes, which should be discounted anywhere from 20 percent off to full-on clearance. “What I’m seeing are really strong apparel deals from those solid kids apparel places like Forever 21, Gymboree, Old Navy,” Bodge says. “But I would hold off on your gear like your backpacks, lunch boxes.” Those items will be marked down in August, with one exception. “My friends at Staples gave me a little heads up, there’s a really good deal at the end of the month — the last two weeks,” Bodge says. “25 percent off of backpacks, with the purchase of select school supplies.” If you’re an Amazon Prime member, take advantage of Prime Day. The exact date is usually a secret but Bodge has the inside scoop. “We think Amazon Prime Day will be around mid-month, around the 16th of July. But you didn’t hear that from me.” What should you buy then? “What we’ve seen on past prime days are sales on their proprietary devices like their Kindles, Echo Dot,” she says. If you’ve got your eye on something specific, set a deal alert on slickdeals.net so you’ll be alerted when the item you want is on sale. And finally, this may be the best deal of all: Best Friends Animal Society says all adoptable pets are free through the 4th of July. Their goal is to send home 10,000 pets in 10 days.

Ryan Mayer Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson have squared off plenty of times with a major on the line throughout the pairs career, but now they two are reportedly planning a possible match with higher stakes: $10 million. According to a report from Golf.com , Woods and Mickelson nearly had the match set up to take place on July 3rd in Las Vegas. The details weren’t able to be worked out in time, however, Mickelson told the website that the two sides are still working on making the match happen. “We’re working on a different date,” Mickelson said on Thursday. “I thought it was done for the 3rd but obviously it wasn’t.” Woods’s representatives declined to comment. The idea for the match reportedly was spawned during the practice round that the pair played prior to the Masters at Augusta this past April. Mickelson then hinted at a potential match ahead of The Player’s Championship in May telling reporters at the time: “The excitement that’s been going on around here, it gets me thinking: Why don’t we just bypass all the ancillary stuff of a tournament and just go head-to-head and just have kind of a high-stakes, winner-take-all match. Now, I don’t know if he wants a piece of me, but I just think it would be something that would be really fun for us to do, and I think there would be a lot of interest in it if we just went straight to the final round.” According to the report, Shadow Creek Golf Club in Las Vegas is the likely site and the match wouldn’t necessarily be a one-time thing. The pair have a “shared vision” to play a few exhibition matches a year, around the world.

Report: Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson Planning $10 Million Match
By: Madison Park, CNN and Oscar Holland, CNN (CNN) — When the U.S. Postal Service rolled out its Forever stamps in 2010 featuring a close-up of the Statue of Liberty, it wasn’t actually of the iconic symbol of freedom. Instead, it was the face of the more diminutive replica that stands on the Las Vegas Strip and occasionally gets dolled up in sports jerseys to celebrate events in Sin City. As if the mix-up wasn’t embarrassing enough, it’s also going to cost the Postal Service. On Friday, a federal judge ruled that the Postal Service should pay $3.5 million to Robert Davidson, the sculptor of the Las Vegas replica. Davidson filed suit in 2013, saying that the Postal Service had infringed on his work, which was original and therefore protected. In his lawsuit, Davidson said his replica “brought a new face to the iconic statue – a face which audiences found appeared more ‘fresh-faced,’ ‘sultry’ and even ‘sexier’ than the original located in New York.” The government argued that it owed Davidson nothing because the statue is a replica and doesn’t contain original work, which would make his copyright invalid. But the court disagreed, ruling that Davidson’s work is original in “making the statue his own creation, particularly the face.” “A comparison of the two faces unmistakably shows that they are different,” Judge Eric Bruggink wrote. How did the mistake happen? In 2008, the Postal Service began the process of looking for new images for the Forever stamp. Its then-manager of stamp development had been looking for something “different and unique” in the Statue of Liberty image because it had already been used in at least 20 different stamps, according to his court testimony that’s summarized in the court’s opinion. The decision came down to an image of the Las Vegas statue that had appeared on a photo service. The Postal Service purchased a license of that photograph. Several Postal Service officials testified that they wouldn’t have selected that image had they known that it wasn’t the real Statue of Liberty. Then, the stamp bearing the face of the Las Vegas statue went on sale in December 2010 , paired with a US flag Forever stamp. Three months later, USPS learned about the mix-up. But by then, the face of the Las Vegas replica was on nearly 3 billion stamps that had already been printed. The Postal Service attempted to make the best of it in its public statements. “We really like the image and are thrilled that people have noticed in a sense,” a USPS spokesman told CNN in 2011. “It’s something that people really like. If you ask people in Vegas, they’re saying, ‘Hey, That’s great. That’s wonderful.’ It’s certainly injected some excitement into our stamp program.” Eventually, the Lady Liberty stamp was retired in 2014 after about 4.9 billion had been sold, which amounts to about $2.1 billion in sales. Was Las Vegas work sufficiently original? The lawsuit hinged on whether Davidson’s statue, which stands in front of the New York-New York Hotel and Casino, could be considered an original work. The sculptor said that his Lady Liberty was not a direct duplicate, and that her face was “more modern” and “definitely more feminine.” Davidson also drew attention to differences in the eyes, eyelids and upper lip. He said he was influenced by a picture of his mother-in-law, which he used to form his final version of the statue, which was completed in 1996. The question facing the the US Court of Federal Claims was whether the replica was “sufficiently original to be afforded copyright protection, whether the government’s use was infringing.” Ultimately, the court sided with Davidson. “The portion used was entirely of what we consider to have been the original work contributed by Mr. Davidson,” Bruggink wrote. “The government’s only real defense is that its use did not particularly harm plaintiff’s business as an industrial sculptor. That may be true, but we also note that it certainly did not benefit him. The Postal Service offered neither public attribution nor apology.” Todd Bice, Davidson’s attorney, said in response to the ruling: “As the court noted, Mr. Davidson’s artistic creation of the Las Vegas Lady Liberty is highly unique and attractive which is what prompted the US Postal Service to select a photo of his work for the second ever Forever Stamp, over hundreds of other images.” “For too long, the Postal Service has endeavored to ignore the rights of artists like Mr. Davidson, simply taking intellectual property with after-the-fact offers of nominal compensation,” he said in an email statement to CNN. The Postal Service told CNN by email that it is “reviewing the decision and will comment if and when appropriate.” The-CNN-Wire & © 2018 Cable News Network, Inc., a Time Warner Company. NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — A man is due in court Friday to face multiple charges after he allegedly attacked a woman on the Upper West Side. Desmond Smith, 32, was arrested Thursday and charged with attempted rape, sexual abuse, strangulation and assault . Police said the 37-year-old victim exited an Uber around 11 p.m. Wednesday near Central Park West and 84th Street. Police say when the suspect approached and tried to talk with her, she ignored him, but the man allegedly threw her onto the sidewalk, punched, stomped and bit her as he started to remove her clothing. Sources told CBS2 that she fought back, even biting him. Ernest Pjedri, who works as a doorman across the street, heard the woman scream and went to see what happened. “She was on the floor and he was on top of her. He was hitting her, basically, with hand or foot, I couldn’t see that, but also in the way I saw him pulling off the clothes,” said Pjedri. He said he pulled out his cellphone to snap a photo of the man, and the suspect was distracted by the flash. Pjedri said the man tried to tell him the woman owed him money. He and the neighbor both called police, but the suspect and victim took off separately before officers arrived. According to police, Smith has 10 prior arrests including a May 22 incident in Queens involving a domestic assault. Anyone with information is asked to call the NYPD’s Crime Stoppers hotline at 1-700-577-TIPS (8477), or for Spanish 1-888-57-PISTA (74782). UWS Assault Suspect Expected In Court After Brutal Attack
MAE SAI, THAILAND (CBSNewYork/AP) — Thai authorities overseeing the rescue operation for 12 boys and their soccer coach trapped in a flooded cave in the country’s north said they have a “limited amount of time” to get them out, as they raced Friday against worsening weather and lowered oxygen levels in the underground complex. The massive operation inside and around Tham Luang Nang Non cave in Chiang Rai province suffered its first fatality Friday when a former Thai navy SEAL passed out underwater on an overnight mission and was unable to be revived. “We can no longer wait for all conditions (to be ready) because circumstances are pressuring us,” Thai SEAL commander Arpakorn Yookongkaew told a news conference. “We originally thought the boys can stay safe inside the cave for quite some time but circumstances have changed. We have limited amount of time.” The oxygen levels inside the cave were getting lower because of all the workers inside, and authorities on Friday were trying to install a 3-mile-long oxygen tube to pump in air, CBS News correspondent Ben Tracy reports. A senior army commander, Maj. Gen. Chalongchai Chaiyakam, said that the most pressing mission was to provide the oxygen line to reach the kids, who are stuck deep in the complex but are being looked after by four SEALs, including a medic. He said the oxygen line was also tied to a telephone line that would provide a channel of communication for the team. The boys, aged 11-16, and their 25-year-old coach went exploring in the cave after a soccer game June 23. Monsoon flooding cut off their escape and prevented rescuers from finding them for almost 10 days as the only way to reach them was by navigating a series of dark and tight passageways filled with muddy water and strong currents. Authorities have been racing to pump out water from the cave before more storms hit the region in the coming days and send water levels rising again. Due to high water levels, the only way for the boys to get out of the cave would be by diving, something cave rescue experts warn is extremely dangerous, even for those with experience. Authorities were trying to drain the flood waters to a level where the boys would not have to dive and could swim out with their heads above water, Tracy reports, but there were worries that even if the water levels were lowered, the boys would not have the endurance to make the trip. Friday’s death of the former SEAL underscores the risks of diving. The diver was working in a volunteer capacity and died during an overnight mission in which he was placing oxygen canisters along the route divers must take to get to the children. The strategically placed canisters would allow divers to stay under water for longer during the approximately five hour trip to reach the stranded team. While underwater, the rescuer passed out and efforts to resuscitate him failed. The governor has said the 13 boys may not be extracted at the same time, depending on their condition. The boys were reportedly weak but for the most part physically healthy. They had been practicing wearing diving masks and breathing, in preparation for the possibility of diving. Cave rescue experts have said it could be safest to simply supply the boys where they are and wait for the flooding to subside. That could take months, however, given that Thailand’s rainy season typically lasts through October. And without proper oxygen levels, staying put could also prove deadly. Meanwhile on Friday, FIFA, the organizers of the World Cup, sent a letter to the president of the Football Association of Thailand offering their “deepest sympathies and support” to the families of young soccer players and their coach. The letter, signed by FIFA President Gianni Infantino, invited the team to the World Cup final in Russia, should they be rescued in time and be healthy enough to travel. It said that the team’s appearance at the final would “undoubtedly be a wonderful moment of communion and celebration.” The boys have asked the navy SEALs taking care of them in the cave for details about what has happened in the World Cup since they got trapped on June 23. NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — MoviePass will start to charge more for films and screening times that are in high demand. Users usually only pay a $10 fee to see as much as one movie per day in theaters. The new peak pricing means users could pay a few extra dollars to book the latest blockbuster on a Saturday night. It started rolling out surge pricing on Thursday. According to an email sent to customers, moviegoers will also be told when a showtime does not yet have an added fee. The company pays for users’ tickets and is apparently looking to make up for losses.

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – Police are searching for a woman who was seen on video pointing fireworks at people in Brooklyn. She appears to be holding a Roman candle as sparks fly over people’s heads and into a liquor store on Nostrand Avenue near Saint John’s Place in Crown Heights. “Someone could’ve definitely gotten hurt,” one resident told CBS2’s Ali Bauman. “That could’ve been me that’s walking by going home, and I could have got hit in the crossfire,” said another. It happened Monday night, but residents say the illegal fireworks shows are common around the Fourth of July. “I’ve lived here about 10 years, and it’s pretty consistent year to year,” one man said. “They do it every other day,” said a woman. “People have fun, then they start having too much fun, then everything gets out of hand.” Sometimes it happens in the middle of the intersection. “They would run out, light them, and run back, while traffic was still going,” a man said. “A few cars swerved, I think they got startled by it.” Police said no injuries were reported in the incident. Thursday night, Bauman found discarded fireworks boxes at nearly every corner in the neighborhood. “I’m sure we’ll hear something for the next two weeks I imagine. They didn’t get rid of all of them in one night,” the man said. The NYPD has been warning against illegal fireworks for weeks. But when the Macy’s display ended Wednesday, law breakers kept lighting their own throughout the five boroughs. “It’s crazy, it’s stupid, it’s unnecessary,” said another man. Police tweeted photos of some of the hundreds of illegal fireworks confiscated this week. As we warned you, fireworks are illegal and dangerous if not handled properly. Excellent work by officers from the @NYPD111Pct who confiscated these illegal fireworks last night. We encourage you to leave fireworks for the professionals. pic.twitter.com/hKL3xlv3jN — NYPD NEWS (@NYPDnews) July 5, 2018 “If it happens one place and the police is there, somebody else pick it up and do it somewhere else,” another woman said. Sources tell CBS2 investigators are working to identify the woman in the video, who could face charges of reckless endangerment and unlawful possession of fireworks.
