PEMBERTON, N.J. (CBSNewYork) – It’s National Blueberry Month and peak season for the popular fruit. CBS2’s Cindy Hsu visited Haines Berry Farm in Pemberton, New Jersey, where people can pick their own. “I make jams with them, pies. I like them with sour cream, which a lot of people don’t like, but I personally like them with sour cream,” blueberry lover Karen Ayrer told Hsu, adding the bigger the berry, the juicer. The farm had everything from blueberry mustard to blueberry honey and blueberry soap. The commercial growing of blueberries started in South Jersey thanks to a local woman who began shipping them in 1916. “Elizabeth White was the first person to cultivate blueberries at Whites Bog over in Browns Mills, which is only a few miles from here,” farm owner Timothy Haines said. It’s now the Garden State’s No. 1 crop, with a production value of nearly $84 million a year. The United States is responsible for 90 percent of the world’s blueberry supply, and New Jersey ranks in the top six places nationwide when it comes to blueberry production. Haines’s grandfather bought the farm in 1954 and showed Hsu the best way to choose blueberries once they’re in the store. He said make sure they’re all blue – you don’t want any green or red ones hiding in there – and look for a white coating around the berry. “They should have this white bloom on them, and that’s a naturally occurring yeast. And it just makes them more attractive,” he explained. There should be no juice on the bottom of the container. If there is, it’s a sign that the berries have been around too long. Haines said there are hundreds of different varieties of blueberries, but the most popular are Duke and Blue Crop. Jeff Devends, of Toms River, said he loves them all. “Luckily, they don’t weigh us before we start, because we’ll probably eat more blueberries than we actually pick,” he said. Blueberry season in New Jersey lasts through the end of July, so you still have a few weeks to enjoy the locally grown berries. Experts say blueberries last around a week in the refrigerator. But if you freeze them, they’ll last a year.

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – Gov. Andrew Cuomo is feeling the political heat after another member of his administration is convicted of federal corruption charges . The governor was greeted by cheers and applause Friday at a Brooklyn Catering Hall as he spoke at a reproductive rights rally and a press conference demanding senate passage of speed camera legislation . Those events only delayed the unavoidable questions about the federal corruption conviction of Dr. Alain Kaloyeros, the man he picked to spur upstate development – the so-called “Buffalo Billions Project.” “The law is the law, and this was a violation of the public trust,” Cuomo said. According to CBS2’s Marcia Kramer, the governor tried to distance himself from Kaloyeros, who was convicted of steering contracts to build a solar panel plant and other high-tech firms to preferred developers that were also political donors to the governor. Cuomo pointed out that Dr. Kaloyeros was a longtime state employee originally hired by former Republican Gov. George Pataki. Kaloyeros was charged with redeveloping Albany, which he reportedly did with great success. “Dr. Kaloyeros, who was so impactful during the Pataki years, he was I think the highest paid state employee at a million dollars,” Cuomo added. Cuomo kept Kaloyeros on his staff and lavished him with praise in 2014. “You met Dr. Alain Kaloyeros, he’s New York’s secret weapon,” the governor said four years ago. Cuomo’s political opponents in this fall’s race for governor pounced on the conviction. “We can’t clean up Albany until we clean up the governor’s mansion,” gubernatorial candidate Cynthia Nixon said. “It doesn’t have to be like this.” “I think the public has gotten used to this and believes this is just the way it is,” Republican candidate Marc Molinaro added. “This isn’t the way democracy is supposed to function. This isn’t honest, it isn’t decent, it isn’t fair and it isn’t right. And I’m hopeful New Yorkers will understand that and sweep the place clean this November.” Former Gov. Pataki says he didn’t hire Kaloyeros, Gov. Mario Cuomo did. “For Andrew Cuomo to try to push the cloud of corruption onto my administration is despicable,” he said in a statement.

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) — It’s all in the family at the New Rochelle fire department. Among 21 candidates Friday, the department welcomed a third-generation firefighter. It wasn’t the first time Ann Cordaro hugged and kissed a recent graduate of a fire academy in Westchester County. At this point, you can probably call her a pro. “I couldn’t ask for a better life or better boys,” she said. Her late husband was a New Rochelle firefighter for almost 40 years and so are her sons — all five of them following in their dad’s footsteps. But on Friday, a third generation found room on the same path. “My husband is not here, he’d be so proud of his grandson,” said Ann. “That he became a firefighter also, because my husband loved it.” With a salute to his dad, handshake and a hug, 27-year-old Ted Cordaro became a probationary firefighter. “I think it’s a calling, as cliche that sounds. I really think it is, you just know from a young age what it is you want to do,” said Ted. “He studied hard for it, he worked hard for it and everything kind of fell into place,” said Ted’s father, Salvatore. After 17 weeks of training, Ted and 20 other men graduated. All will be stationed in different fire houses across Westchester Ccounty, but Ted will head right to New Rochelle, working in the same department as his dad and his four uncles. “New Rochelle, we’re a busy job to begin with,” said New Rochelle fire chief Andy Sandor. “There’s a lot of things going on and to get such men of character, it’s just incredible, I am just so fortunate to be able to work with such people.” They’ll be busy, but with Ted’s grandfather as inspiration and his grandmother right here with him, he has support. “I have a scanner so I listen to them when they go out, so I can make sure… Even my husband, when he retired, would make sure he knew where they were,” said Ann. She has six firemen to listen for — it’s like having a full time job, for a woman full of pride. Ted’s aunt also took the firefighter exam, but ended up going into nursing instead.

Ryan Mayer While some of the future NBA stars are lighting up the court in Las Vegas in Summer League, Milwaukee Bucks forward Jabari Parker chose to take his game to the blacktop and take on some fans in a pickup game. Parker put out a post on Instagram yesterday afternoon of him in his basketball shoes with the address of a local park in Milwaukee. Fans in the area flocked to the court and Parker played in some pick-up games with those that showed up. CBS 58 News was able to talk to Parker and ask him why he chose to come out and shoot some hoops with the community. “My whole neighborhood is St. Francis which I lived in for three years so its pretty much home to me and no better place to me than right off the highway and right by the lake,” said Parker. Local sports anchor Scott Grodsky was able to get some video of Parker playing in the pickup game, which he shared on Twitter last night. Love seeing stuff like this! @JabariParker surprises some local @Bucks fans with a game of pickup. Jabari has always been incredibly active in the Milwaukee community. “I just want to say I love the city, I love Milwaukee and I love the people” pic.twitter.com/nitKUaRK5E — Scott Grodsky (@ScottGrodsky) July 13, 2018 Parker is currently a restricted free agent and the Bucks have extended him the one-year qualifying offer of $4.3 million. Since he is a restricted free agent, the Bucks would have the right to match any offer sheet that Parker is signed to by another team. Last season, he averaged 12.6 points and 4.9 rebounds per game after recovering from a torn ACL.

(CBS News/CBS Local)– In January 2018, a woman from Yakutia, Russia, posted a photo that went viral of her frozen eyelashes , completely white with frost in extreme sub-zero temperatures. Now, six months later, another one of her selfies is taking off, but it is vastly different than the frozen eyelash photo. Her name is Anastasia Gruzdeva and she’s still in Yakutia, but temperatures in that part of Siberia these days are too hot, not too cold, and she is covered in mosquitoes instead of snow. Gruzdeva posted the summer selfie on Monday, when temperatures reached the 90s. The photo shows mosquitoes covering her face and chest as she stands in a field of flowers. What makes summers so difficult in the region is the swarm of mosquitoes that infiltrate the area from May to September, NDTV reports . “Arctic mosquito swarms are the stuff of legend. Some of them contain hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of insects,” The Atlantic noted in 2015. “If the Arctic continues to warm , and there is every indication that it will, the summer tundra may soon be abuzz with larger and larger clouds of biting, blood-sucking insects.” Meanwhile, last winter, thermometers couldn’t even keep up with the plunging temperatures in the remote Yakutia region, which hit minus 88.6 degrees Fahrenheit in some areas. Students in the region routinely go to school even when it’s 40 below zero. But school was cancelled and police ordered parents to keep their children inside. Gruzdeva ventured outside on a January day despite a temperature of about minus 58 degrees Fahrenheit. She bundled up, wrapping a scarf around most of her face, but she couldn’t cover her eyes, which quickly froze. Her lashes looked frozen solid, with a stiff coating of ice covering them. The drastic difference between temperatures in Yakutia’s winters and summers has become a topic of discussion online. One person posted of a thermometer registering 38.8 degrees Celsius on Sunday — that’s 101.8 degrees Fahrenheit. In a stark contrast, someone else shared a photo of the city of Yakutsk in the winter, when it’s been known as “the world’s coldest city.” It’s hard to choose which is the lesser of two evils — extreme cold and a frozen-over face, or sweltering heat and swarms of mosquitos? It appears at least one person, Gruzdeva, isn’t afraid to go out in either of the extreme climates. © 2018 CBS Interactive Inc. All Rights Reserved. H/T CBS News

Woman With Frozen Eye Lashes Takes New Viral Picture With Mosquitoes
(CNN) — Both the UK National Health Service and the American Academy of Pediatrics recommend that mothers exclusively breastfeed until about 6 months of age and then begin to introduce solid foods. Yet, an alternative feeding plan is also safe for babies, new research suggests. Introducing a child to solid baby foods after just 3 months was associated with a small but significant improvement in nighttime sleep and slightly fewer wakings throughout the week compared with babies who began eating solids later, according to a study published Monday in the journal JAMA Pediatrics . For Dr. Gideon Lack , senior author of the study and a professor and head of the Department of Paediatric Allergy at King’s College London, the study’s single most important finding was the “more than 50% reduction in the number of families reporting severe sleep disturbances in their babies.” “Lack of sleep can be pretty devastating for babies and their families,” he said. Nighttime sleep Many parents assume that a belly filled with solid food and not just liquids will help their infants sleep throughout the night, but previous scientific studies have not proved it. So, while planning a study that examined how allergies develop in babies — the Enquiring About Tolerance or EAT study — Lack and his co-authors decided they might also design the study to explore the connection between infant diets and sleep habits. “Right from the start,” said Lack, “we embedded into the structure of the study very detailed, validated questionnaires that assess sleep.” The research team began by recruiting more than 1,300 babies in England and Wales between 2009 and 2012. All the babies were 3 months old, healthy, full-term infants whose mothers exclusively breastfed them. Next, the researchers sorted the mothers into two groups. One group was asked to exclusively breastfeed the infants till six months, while the second group was asked to continue breastfeeding yet also introduce solid foods for the first week of the study — the babies were 3 months old — and in the second week begin to include six items that are typically linked to allergies in children: cow’s milk, peanut, hen’s egg, sesame, white fish and wheat. Then, the team collected data on the infants every month up to one year and then every three months up to 3 years old. The mothers in the first group, on average, introduced solid foods to their babies at 23 weeks of age, whereas the mothers in the second group did so on average at age 16 weeks, the researchers found. Soon after 6 months, then, no real differences existed between the babies with respect to solid foods. However, the two groups showed differences in sleep, the results indicated. The babies who ate solid foods earlier slept longer from age 5 months past 1 year: about 7 minutes longer on average each night, with no differences in daytime sleeping. Lack said that once adjustments were made for factors associated with sleep duration “the sleep difference is more on the order of 16 or 17 minutes a night which correlates to about 2 hours extra sleep a week.” The babies whose diets included solid food earlier also woke less frequently during the night: They averaged about two fewer middle-of-the-night wakings each week than the others. The parents of babies in the early solid foods group also reported fewer very serious sleep problems than parents in the other group. The definition of a “serious sleep problem” was left to parents, who often perceived difficulties when their babies woke frequently or did not sleep long at night. These improvements in sleep seen in the early solids group did not end after seven or eight months as the researchers expected but continued throughout the first year of infancy and beyond. “We were all — me and my co- investigators — we were very surprised by this finding,” said Lack, who added this sustained difference between groups suggests “that sleep patterns and sleep activities are imprinted or rather developed very early on in life.” Lack also said the analysis didn’t “find specific foods associated with better sleep.” The mothers in the early solids group fed their children a variety of foods, including vegetables, fruits and rice in addition to the suggested allergenic foods. Though the large number of families participating in the study may strengthen the findings, one pediatrician has concerns about the study’s findings. ‘Other ways’ to improve sleep “Parenting lore suggests that feeding babies solids can help them sleep better. This study may support that theory, although past studies have not necessarily shown it,” said Atlanta pediatrician Dr. Jennifer Shu. “It’s possible that feeding more breast milk or formula may have the same effect.” Shu, who was not involved in the research, noted that there are “numerous known benefits of breast milk.” “My concern would be that the recommendation of early introduction of solids (especially when increased very quickly) could result in a corresponding decrease in valuable breast milk consumption,” Shu wrote in an email. She added the decision to start solids at a certain time is best decided by the parents and pediatrician based on a baby’s growth and general health. Overall, Shu felt the improvements in infant sleep seen in the study were “small.” “Parental quality of life is important but it remains to be seen if introducing solids before 6 months and/or getting small improvements of sleep is the solution,” said Shu. “There are other ways to improve an infant’s sleep that are not related to feeding, including having consistent sleep routines and avoiding over-stimulation (such as from artificial light or not giving babies the opportunity to sleep when they need it),” said Shu. Lack said that, going forward, more research is needed to examine “not only quantity of sleep but also quality of sleep in babies.” “Prolonged breast feeding is extremely important,” said Lack. “The study highlights the fact that it is safe and potentially beneficial to introduce solid foods, including allergenic foods, into a baby’s diet after 3 months of age.” The-CNN-Wire & © 2018 Cable News Network, Inc., a Time Warner Company. (KDKA/CBS Local) – Chuck E. Cheese’s is getting in on the “pay your age” deal after yesterday’s Build-A-Bear fiasco. The restaurant announced its offering a pay your age deal Friday for games. Parents can pay their child’s age for 30 minutes of ‘All You Can Play’ on Friday, July 13. Chuck E. Cheese’s posted the deal on their Facebook page, and says it’s only available at locations where a “Play Pass” is available. The “All You Can Play’ launched last month and lets parents pay for the time instead of purchasing tokens or play points. The normal “All You Can Play” deal is $9 for 30 minutes. The “Pay Your Age Day” didn’t go as expected yesterday for Build-A-Bear. The company was forced to cut off lines due to the overwhelming response.

LONDON (CBSNewYork) — President Donald Trump called the relationship between the U.S. and the U.K. “the highest level of special” during a joint news conference Friday with British Prime Minister Theresa May. The two leaders spoke after meeting at Chequers, the prime minister’s country estate. “I want to thank you for the honor of visiting the United Kingdom, a special place,” Trump told May at the news conference. “My mother was born here. It means something maybe just a little bit extra, maybe a lot extra. We had a wonderful visit.” MORE FROM CBS NEWS The president said May is “doing a fantastic job” as British prime minister and said “I think she’s a terrific woman.” Reporters questioned Trump and May on a variety of topics, including NATO, Brexit, immigration and other issues. When asked what he hopes to accomplish in his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday, Trump said they would be talking about Ukraine, Syria and other parts of the Middle East as well as nuclear proliferation. “I’m not going in with high expectations but we may come out with surprising things,” Trump said. “Relationship is very important.” The president also said he would bring up Russian meddling in the 2016 election. The prime minister’s Brexit plans was likely a focus of Friday’s discussions. In a newspaper interview, Trump was critical of May’s proposals for exiting the European Union. When asked about the interview, Trump said, “I didn’t criticize the prime minister. I have a lot of respect for the prime minister.” May praised the bond between the U.S. and the U.K., but said “it is all of our responsibility to ensure that trans-Atlantic unity endures.” On immigration, Trump said it has been “very bad” for Europe. May said the U.K. has a “proud history of welcoming people who want to come to our country to contribute to our economy and contribute to our society.” “Over the years, overall immigration has been good for the U.K.,” she said. “Of course, what is important is that we have control of our borders.” Later Friday, Queen Elizabeth will welcome the president, which will include a formal tea at Windsor Castle. Trump will end his day with a trip to his Turnberry golf club course in Scotland.

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — The Westchester County executive is meeting with transportation and trucking officials Friday to find a way to keep commercial trucks off the Hutchinson River Parkway. Commercial trucks are banned on the parkway, but routinely smash into the low overpasses in Westchester and the Bronx. The most recent incident happened Monday when the driver of a truck sheared off the top and side of his trailer like a tin can, blaming his partner for the error. “He sent me down this road,” the driver said. “And this was the result of him sending me down this road right here.” The drove the 11-foot moving truck under the King Street bridge in Rye Brook despite the sign saying the clearance is nine-and-a-half feet, signs saying passenger cars only and detection systems that are supposed to alert drivers they are over height. “He knows he made a mistake,” said Cardell Talton of Atlas Moving. It’s a problem that happens far too frequently on the parkway. One happened on June 27 in the Bronx and another on June 12 in Pelham. On Friday, Westchester County Executive George Latimer is holding a roundtable meeting on the issue. “It’s not one thing that we need to do,” Latimer said. “It’s multiple things that we need to do.” Latimer says he’s demanding action from the trucking industry and the state Department of Transportation. “There are multiple reasons why drivers miss what information is out there already,” he said. As for the incident Monday, a woman who was driving in a car was injured and taken to the hospital.

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – In a city full of electric, eye-catching advertisements, one controversial billboard is turning heads in Times Square. The pink billboard prominently place in one of the tourist capitals of the world says “Got cravings? Girl, tell them to #SuckIt” and features a smiling young woman sucking on a lollipop, which the company Flat Tummy says are supposed to suppress your appetite. Sophie Vershbow, 28, who has struggled with eating disorders in the past, says it’s nothing short of a dangerous diet ad. “It’s so potentially harmful to so many people walking by it, and I felt like we finally needed to take a stand and try and get it taken down,” she told CBS2’s Jessica Layton. She tweeted, “Hey Twitter, Let’s use our power for good by guilting @FlatTummyCo into taking down their Times Square billboard advertising appetite suppressants. Love, A former-anorexic teenage girl.” Hey Twitter, Let’s use our power for good by guilting @FlatTummyCo into taking down their Times Square billboard advertising appetite suppressants. Have we actually gone mad? Why aren’t there any boys in the ad? Why is it (expletive) PINK? Because you feel men can look however they want? Their goals are to be successful. But ours are to just be smaller?” Some moms have called it a body-shaming billboard. “Obviously, it’s suggesting that if you have a flat tummy, you’re a better person, and I don’t link that message,” one woman said. “Not really offensive to me,” said another. Celebrities like Kim Kardashian have promoted the product, and while some people say you can’t police every sign you seen, the company’s claim that the 35 calorie pops are natural and safe have not be evaluated by the FDA, Layton reported. Flat Tummy has not responded to CBS2’s request for comment, but the company’s website does say you should consult your doctor before trying any of its products or any dietary supplements at all. The companies that own the billboard also did not return our calls or emails.

SMITHTOWN, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) – A Long Island teen who has battled cancer for years celebrated her Sweet 16 Thursday. As CBS2’s Cindy Hsu reports, her community came together to give her the best birthday. It was a day of beauty for Erika Gottlieb her friends at Cactus Salon & Day Spa in Smithtown. The services were a gift from the salon. “I’ve been very happy and excited and surprised,” she told Hsu. Gottlieb has been through a lot. She was an active 12-year-old when a rare bone cancer hit, keeping her in the hospital for 237 days straight. She had to have parts of her hip and pelvis removed and underwent 14 operations, which left her unable to walk. When she finally returned home, hundreds of people rallied behind her. “Erika was in the hospital for almost nine months. So to come home and to have so many people and her friends with her… It keeps Erika smiling and keeps our whole family together,” her mother, Cindy, said. Gottlieb is now a leader in training for children’s cancer camp with the group Kids Need More. Melissa Firmes, the founder of the organization, is recovering from leukemia. “Erika has helped me and shown me how to recover. She’s shown me how to have a good attitude,” she said. Jess Rosenbloom, one of her friends from camp with brain cancer, came all the way from Canada for her Sweet 16. “I don’t care if we fly, if we drive, if we walk, we’re going,” she said. “She just has the power to make everybody laugh, to make everybody smile.” “Think positive, never give up, and you always people around you,” said Gottlieb. While she will be getting lots of presents, she said the best gift is that she’s now cancer free. She’s doing well but still needs to get scans every six months and will need to be monitored by doctors for the rest of her life.

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – More than 100 sidewalks are damaged and dislodged in Queens, and the problem stems from a storm in March. CBS2’s Andrea Grymes took residents’ concerns directly to New York City Parks Commissioner Mitchell Silver to demand answers Thursday about when they’ll see repairs. “We know it’s not a pleasant experience for the homeowners,” he said. The Pineda family navigated over and around a busted sidewalk with two little kids, a stroller, a scooter and a ball that just wouldn’t stay put. “It’s definitely crazy, definitely ridiculous. With the carriage, it’s so hard, especially normally I’m by myself,” said Rosemarie Pineda. More: ‘It’s Frustrating:’ Queens Residents Still Dealing With Winter Storm Damage A homeowner at 158 th Street and 29 th Avenue in North Flushing told Grymes a tree near the road came down in a storm back in March, and the sidewalk has been destroyed ever since. She said the city told her it could be two years before a crew comes to fix it. On Wednesday, CBS2 found a damaged sidewalk on the Vigliotti’s front lawn in Beechhurst and another on a corner in North Flushing where concrete slabs were scattered about. “To let it go for four to five months is shameful,” said State Sen. Tony Avella. The Department of Parks and Recreation initially told Grymes it was enlisting the Department of Design and Construction to help with repairs due to the number and the nature of the work. On Thursday, Grymes took photos of the damage to Silver to get more solid answers. “We’re trying to do it as quickly as possible,” he said. “It’s hard to say a timeframe. Again, we’re working with DDC and of course their contractors. So our goal is to fix this problem as soon as possible.” Later, a parks spokesperson sent a statement, saying the department will begin removing any remaining tree trunks this month and expects sidewalk to repairs to begin within the next three weeks, adding “we’ll stay on it.”

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Gov. Andrew Cuomo is going toe-to-toe with the Trinitarios and other Bronx gangs to keep them from recruiting new members. “The gangs win when a void is created. The gangs win when the young person feels no support, no option, no opportunity,” Cuomo said Thursday. “We have to fill the void before the gang gets there.” Three weeks after 15-year-old Lesandro “Junior” Guzman-Feliz was stabbed to death by suspected gang members in what police are calling a case of mistaken identity, the governor announced a $19 million package of anti-gang programs designed to give kids so much to do they won’t be tempted to join a gang. “Terrible, horrendous act,” the governor said. “What should we do? Do something, do something positive, not just words, not just ‘you’re in my thoughts and prayers’ – do something.” The new #JusticeForJunior program: * Targets boys and girls 6-19 * Offers free programs, including sports, arts, computer labs and game rooms * Establishes summer camp programs * Provides funds to renovate Roberto Clemente State Park * Expands state police anti-gang operations * Eupports organizations that stops gangs from recruiting in schools Cuomo’s initiatives got a big boost from Guzman-Feliz’s father, who had just come from the cemetery where he visited his son’s grave. “It’s good news for me and for other people,” he told CBS2’s Political Reporter Marcia Kramer. Looking at the community memorial to Junior, the elder Guzman said he’s still having a hard time. “I think about my son every day. I cry every day,” he said. Will the new initiatives work? “If you give kids something to do to buy their time, it keeps them out the streets. The more they have on their brain, the less violence they have on their mind,” one resident said. “We can’t allow the gangs to win, but we have to involve parents now. Parents need to talk with their children,” said another. “They need role models, they need people who actually grew up in this neighborhood that will guide them to let them know this is not the right way to go.” another added. Many of the programs are expected to begin this summer and fall, including a youth baseball and softball academy run in partnership with Major League Baseball. It’s expected to serve 1,500 kids.

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – New technology is making breast reconstruction for cancer survivors much safer. As CBS2’s Dr. Max Gomez reports, it’s a high-tech, high-def, 3D video microscope. 3D video has been around for a while, and high-def keeps getting sharper so surgeons can see and work on really tiny structures, but they both have been expensive and cumbersome to use, especially in the operating room. Sally Ritter had a couple bumpy weeks after having a double mastectomy and breast reconstruction, but she’s getting much better. “I actually just started having pain in my left breast,” she said. A mammogram followed by a biopsy revealed cancer in one breast and suspicious spots in the other. “I said to him, ‘Just take them both,’” she said. Ritter chose to have breast reconstruction at the same time – a procedure called a DIEP flap, where doctors take skin and fat from her belly area to form new breasts. The crucial part of the surgery is connecting those transplanted tissues to a new blood supply on her chest. “These are tiny vessels ranging anywhere from one to two millimeters,” said Dr. Neil Tanna, of Northwell Health. “Those connections of blood vessels is really what allows the tissue to be vascularized or to live.” Normally, that means operating for hours while looking through large, cumbersome microscopes. But now, that big scope is being replaced by a little TV camera-looking device. It’s actually a very high-resolution microscope that projects images onto a super high-def screen. Add in specialize polarized glasses, and the image becomes 3D. It’s much better for surgeons and patients, Gomez reports. “These are long operations. They can be six, eight, sometimes 10 hours. So having a surgeon that’s not fatigued and that’s able to do the most important part of the surgery – the microsugery – in a comfortable position I think is a real benefit,” said Dr. Mark Smith, of Northwell Health. Ritter’s choices have worked out for her. “All I think about is my family, being with my grandchildren,” she said through tears. As Gomez reports, we sometimes take these surgical techniques for granted, but doctors are sewing together blood vessels that are about the thickness of a pencil lead, and they have to maintain those tiny tubes open for blood to flow. These amazing scopes help make that possible.
