CLEVELAND (AP) — Rookie right-hander Shane Bieber pitched into the eighth inning and Cleveland’s shaky bullpen narrowly closed things out, lifting the Indians over the New York Yankees 6-5 on Friday night. Bieber (5-1) was removed after Tyler Wade’s leadoff double in the eighth and Cleveland leading 6-3. Brett Gardner’s RBI groundout cut the lead to two and set up a tense ninth inning. (Photo by David Maxwell/Getty Images) Closer Cody Allen, who allowed a career-high six runs in the ninth inning against Cincinnati on Tuesday, gave up Giancarlo Stanton’s leadoff homer. Greg Bird followed with a single, but Allen got Miguel Andujar to bounce into a double play. Allen walked Neil Walker, but pinch-hitter Didi Gregorius popped up to shortstop Francisco Lindor in shallow left field. Allen recorded his 19th save in 20 chances. Jose Ramirez, the starting third baseman for the AL in the All-Star Game, drove in two runs with a groundout in the first and a triple in the fifth. Michael Brantley, also an All-Star, hit a two-run double in the second. The Indians broke a seven-game losing streak against the Yankees dating to last season’s AL Division Series when New York came back from a 2-0 deficit. The Yankees won the first four games between the teams this season. Yankees rookie Domingo German (2-5) allowed six runs — matching a season high — in four-plus innings. Bieber allowed four runs — three earned — in seven-plus innings. The right-hander was making his seventh major league start. Neil Ramirez replaced Perez in the eighth and hit Aaron Judge with a 1-2 pitch, but struck out Aaron Hicks. Judge ran on the pitch and was called safe at second, but the call was overturned after a review. Bieber has a 3.74 ERA in seven starts with Cleveland after beginning the season at Double-A Akron. Ramirez’s groundout scored a run in the first and Cleveland added three in the second. Yan Gomes doubled in a run before Brantley added a two-run double. New York got back in the game in the fifth on Walker’s RBI double and Gardner’s sacrifice fly, with a wild pitch scoring another run. Ramirez’s RBI triple and Yonder Alonso’s run-scoring single in the bottom of the inning pushed the lead to 6-3. TRAINER’S ROOM Yankees: C Gary Sanchez (strained right groin) ran the bases Friday and could begin a minor league rehab assignment Sunday at Triple-A Scranton. He’s been out since June 25. Indians: LHP Andrew Miller (right knee inflammation) will throw to hitters Saturday at Double-A Akron and will likely begin a rehab assignment next week. He’s been on the disabled list since May 26. UP NEXT Yankees LHP CC Sabathia (6-4, 3.34 ERA) will make his 527th career start Saturday, tying him with Jerry Koosman and Jack Morris for 36th on the career list. RHP Mike Clevinger (7-4, 3.34) allowed two runs in 7 1/3 innings at Yankee Stadium on May 6 in a no-decision. (© Copyright 2018 The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved. NEW YORK (AP) — Noah Syndergaard pitched out of trouble in a rusty return from the disabled list and helped himself with an RBI single as the New York Mets beat the Washington Nationals 4-2 on Friday night. Amed Rosario tripled and doubled, both times over Bryce Harper’s head in center field, and the Mets won for only the sixth time in their last 26 home games. Brandon Nimmo had three hits for New York, which built a three-run cushion in the first inning against struggling starter Tanner Roark. (Photo by Mike Stobe/Getty Images) Matt Adams homered for the inconsistent Nationals, who fell back to .500 at 47-47. They have lost just three of 13 games at Citi Field since the start of last season. After missing seven weeks with a strained ligament in his right index finger, Syndergaard (5-1) came out firing 99 mph fastballs. But he gave up seven hits in five innings and never retired the leadoff hitter. Still, the 2016 All-Star held the Nationals to one run while striking out three and walking two. Wilmer Difo made things easier by running into the first out of the third inning at third base, and Syndergaard retired Anthony Rendon and struck out Harper with two on to limit the damage. Difo had doubled to drive in Roark, who opened the inning with the first triple by a Washington pitcher since Joel Hanrahan in 2007. Syndergaard also got Harper to ground into an inning-ending double play with two runners aboard in the fifth. The right-hander was pulled after 75 pitches. Seth Lugo overcame a wild start to his relief outing and worked two hitless innings. Robert Gsellman gave up Adams’ upper-deck shot in the eighth but got six outs for his fourth save. Roark (3-12) became the first 12-game loser in the majors this season. He allowed four runs and eight hits in five innings. The right-hander has lost his last five starts and six decisions since his most recent win June 6 against Tampa Bay. Washington has dropped his past seven starts and nine of his last 10. Jose Bautista and Devin Mesoraco each had an RBI single in the first, sandwiched around Wilmer Flores’ sacrifice fly. Rosario tripled off the center-field wall to open the second and scored when a smiling Syndergaard lined a single to right field. TRAINER’S ROOM Nationals: SS Trea Turner was rested in favor of Difo as Washington started seven left-handed hitters against Syndergaard. Turner flied out as a pinch hitter leading off the ninth. … RHP Koda Glover is scheduled to pitch Saturday for Class A Potomac after his rehab assignment was moved up from the rookie-level Gulf Coast League. The reliever has been sidelined all season by right shoulder tendinitis and will probably require eight or nine appearances before he’s ready to come off the disabled list, manager Dave Martinez said. Mets: OF Yoenis Cespedes (right hip flexor) ran the bases at the team’s complex in Florida and was scheduled to do so again Friday, according to manager Mickey Callaway. “He came out of it really good. He feels good and is progressing,” Callaway said. “He’s going to run the bases again today and then we’re hoping that, kind of move on to the next step after that.” Cespedes has been out since mid-May. … LHP Jason Vargas (strained right calf) is set to make another rehab start for Class A Brooklyn on Saturday. ROSTER MOVE To open a spot for Syndergaard, the Mets optioned LHP P.J. Conlon to Triple-A Las Vegas. UP NEXT Nationals RHP Austin Voth makes his major league debut against Zack Wheeler (2-6, 4.42 ERA) and the Mets on Saturday. The 26-year-old Voth, a fifth-round draft pick in 2013 out of Washington, was 4-5 with a 3.55 ERA at Triple-A Syracuse. Wheeler, pitching in some poor luck, is 0-5 over 13 outings since his last win April 29 at San Diego. That’s the longest stretch without a win for a Mets starter since 1998. The right-hander is 2-8 in 11 career starts against Washington, including 0-6 with a 5.71 ERA in six games at home. (© Copyright 2018 The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved. THAILAND (CBSNewYork) — The young soccer players rescued from a cave in Thailand say they only intended to be inside for an hour. That hour turned into more than two weeks. Now, the father of the youngest boy is sharing his son’s frightening ordeal. “I felt relief, I was so happy,” Tanawut said through a translator. Tanawut told CBS News about the moment he learned his 11-year-old son Titan would be rescued from the cave . The boy was the youngest of the 12 soccer players trapped for more than two weeks . And little Titan emerged, with big stories to tell. He told his father the boys were forced to run deep into the cave they were exploring when fast-moving water started flowing in. He said the boys’ soccer coach, named Ake, tried to swim to find a way out for them, but the water was so fast and so deep, he turned back around. Titan told his father the first three days in the cave were the hardest. The group was hungry and cold. The boys had trouble sleeping, and Titan cried, because he missed his mom and dad. Coach Ake hugged and encouraged him to be strong, Tanawut said. When asked how he felt about what the coach did for his son, Tanawut said, “I am touched. If the kids didn’t have Coach Ake, I don’t know how they could have survived.” Back in London Friday morning, British divers involved in the rescue, said nothing like this has ever been done before. “There was a lot of chaos, but we were so task-oriented and focused that we sort of blanked that out and carried on with the job at hand, step by step,” said diver Rick Stanton. And Tanawut said for that, he is thankful. He said us Titan is doing well. He said the first thing his son asked when he got out of the cave was where was his coach was and how he was doing. Thai health officials say all the kids are in good mental and physical health. FIFA’s president invited the boys to attend the World Cup Final in Moscow on Sunday, but the boys aren’t strong enough to attend. FIFA says the boys will be honored at another soccer event in the future.

The plaintiffs argued that Johnson & Johnson’s talcum powder products, like baby powder, caused them to develop ovarian cancer. This was the first trial to argue that talc in baby powder contains cancer-causing asbestos. Johnson & Johnson said in a statement it “is deeply disappointed” and “remains confident that its products do not contain asbestos and do not cause ovarian cancer.” CBS News legal analyst Rikki Klieman joins “CBS This Morning” to discuss why this verdict is one of the “most extraordinary” she’s ever seen.

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) – A critically endangered gorilla is being introduced to the public for the first time Thursday since moving into her new home at the Los Angeles Zoo. (Jamie Pham/L.A. Zoo) Twenty-four-year-old Ndjia, a female western lowland gorilla, was brought to the L.A. Zoo from the San Diego Zoo back in May. She has been paired up with the zoo’s male silverback gorilla, 31-year-old Kelly, with the hopes that they will breed. “This move has allowed Ndjia to be placed in a breeding situation for the first time in her life, and it is the Zoo’s hope that Ndjia and the group’s male, Kelly, will take a liking to each other,” the zoo said in a news release. Along with Ndjia and Kelly, the L.A. Zoo has two other gorillas: 42-year-old Evelyn and 24-year-old Rapunzel. (Jamie Pham/L.A. Zoo) Western lowland gorillas are found in Cameroon, the Central African Republic, Equatorial Guinea, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Gabon, and Angola, according to the L.A. Zoo. They are listed as “critically endangered” on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species due to illegal hunting, the Ebola virus and habitat destruction. Their population is believed to be decreasing rapidly, with no recent estimate on the number of western lowland gorillas left in the wild. Last month, Koko, the famous western lowland gorilla who mastered sign language, died at the age of 46 in California’s Santa Cruz Mountains.

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Marco Gonzalez pitched seven sharp innings, David Freitas hit his first major league home run and the Seattle Mariners defeated the Los Angeles Angels 3-0 on Wednesday night. Gonzalez (10-5), who retired his first 10 batters, gave up just two hits and struck out four without issuing a walk. He not only earned his seventh victory since May 17, he became the 10th pitcher in Mariners history to reach 10 wins before the All-Star break. Freitas, who had been hitless in seven at-bats since being recalled July 5, went deep in the third against starter Jaime Barria. It was Freitas’ 32nd career game, 26 of which have been with the Mariners. Barria (5-6) gave up three runs and five hits in five-plus innings with five strikeouts and no walks. The right-hander has lost his last five decisions, including the past two to the Mariners. The Mariners have won 11 of 15 games and 18 of their last 29. They also improved to 27-18 on the road. Seattle shortstop Jean Segura, who found out Wednesday he was added to the American League All-Star team as the result of online balloting, reached base twice. He doubled and was hit by a pitch on the left arm. The Angels did not have a baserunner until the fourth inning when Andrelton Simmons hit a comebacker off Gonzalez’s left leg for a single. Mike Trout followed with a single to center before Gonzalez retired his next 11 batters. Alex Colome pitched the eighth inning for the Mariners, and All-Star closer Edwin Diaz worked a perfect ninth for his major league-leading 36th save. After Freitas gave the Mariners a 1-0 lead in the third, Segura doubled leading off the fourth and Mitch Haniger was hit by a pitch. After a wild pitch from Barria put both runners in scoring position, Nelson Cruz delivered a two-run single for a 3-0 lead. Cruz, selected to the AL All-Star team this week, has 20 extra-base hits over his last 39 games. TRAINER’S ROOM Mariners: C Mike Zunino (bruised left ankle) should be ready to return to the active roster after the All-Star break, according to manager Scott Servais, and has already started throwing again but is not yet running. … RHP Erasmo Ramirez (right lat strain) threw a 25-pitch bullpen at Class A Everett and will advance to 40 pitches before starting a minor league rehab assignment. … RHP Dan Altavilla (right elbow flexor strain) has started to play catch but is not yet throwing from a mound. Angels: RHP Garrett Richards was diagnosed with damage to his ulnar collateral ligament and was placed on the 10-day disabled list. Richards will decide on surgery or a more conservative rehabilitation process. … RHP Shohei Ohtani (elbow), already back on the active roster as a designated hitter, will be re-evaluated July 19 in an exam that could determine if he can begin the rehab process to make a return to the mound. UP NEXT Mariners LHP James Paxton (8-3, 3.49 ERA) will pitch Thursday on normal rest, moving into the rotation spot left unoccupied when RHP Felix Hernandez (back soreness) went on the 10-day DL. Angels LHP Tyler Skaggs (6-5, 2.64), who had a 0.84 ERA over 32 innings in five June starts, is expected to come off the DL after recovering from a groin strain.
