LOS ANGELES (AP) — Yasmani Grandal homered, Enrique Hernandez hit a solo shot on his first pitch in the seventh inning for the go-ahead run, and the Los Angeles Dodgers rallied for a 5-3 win over the Angels on Sunday to gain a split in the Freeway Series. Each team won three games in the season series, with four decided by one run. The Dodgers ended the first half with a National League-leading 129 homers, tying their record for the most homers before the All-Star break set in 2000. All-Star Max Muncy leads the team with 22. The Dodgers (53-43) head into the break atop the NL West by a half-game over Arizona. The Angels continue heading in the opposite direction. They fell to 49-48 and are 14 games behind the AL West-leading Astros. All-Star Kenley Jansen retired the side in the ninth for his 27th save a day after serving up a 10th-inning homer to Kole Calhoun in the Dodgers’ 5-4 loss. The Angels’ Jefry Marte blasted a three-run homer on his first pitch from Clayton Kershaw to tie the game 3-all in the fourth. Justin Upton led off with an infield single to Kershaw and Ian Kinsler followed with a single to set up Marte’s fourth homer of the season. The Dodgers led 3-0 in the second. Grandal homered, Hernandez hit a sacrifice fly to center field and Kershaw helped himself with a two-out RBI single. Kershaw didn’t figure in the decision, allowing three runs and six hits in 6 2/3 innings of his fifth start since coming off the disabled list. He struck out eight and walked four on 108 pitches, the most he’s thrown since working under restrictions in his first four outings back. Kershaw escaped a bases-loaded jam in the first. He retired seven in a row before the Angels got to him in the fourth. Kershaw gave up a two-out walk to All-Star Mike Trout in the seventh and was replaced by Kenta Maeda (7-5), who got out of a bases-loaded situation by striking out Kinsler. Maeda had one strikeout in one-third of an inning. Taylor Cole (0-2) took the loss, allowing one run and three hits in two innings. He struck out one. Trout was 2 for 10 in the three-game series. He walked twice Sunday, extending his franchise record for walks in the first half to 84. Angels starter Deck McGuire gave up three runs and four hits in three innings. He struck out two and walked two. Marte and Matt Kemp of the Dodgers snapped their bats in two over their knees in frustration after striking out to end the first and fifth innings, respectively. UP NEXT Angels: Resume play on Friday with a three-game series in Anaheim against the World Series champion Astros. Dodgers: Open the second half Friday at Milwaukee to begin a 10-game trip. LHP Clayton Kershaw and LHP Rich Hill are slated to start sometime in the three-game series against the Brewers. (@Copyright 2018. The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved. FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — Chris Pontius scored twice, including the go-ahead goal in the 93rd minute, and the 10-man the Los Angeles Galaxy rallied with two stoppage-time goals to beat the 10-man New England Revolution 3-2 on Saturday night. Dave Romney made it 2-all for the Galaxy (8-7-4) with a header to finish Romain Alessandrini’s corner in the 92nd minute. The Revolution (7-5-7) spent most of the game down a man, but took a 2-1 lead on Luis Caicedo’s goal late in the first half and held that edge until the Galaxy’s late outburst. The Revs’ Cristian Penilla was sent off in the 23rd minute for kicking back at Alessandrini after getting knocked to the ground. Diego Fagundez opened the scoring five minutes later for New England and Pontius scored his first goal in the 38th minute for LA. Ashley Cole was shown his second yellow card in the 85th minute and was sent off for the Galaxy. The Galaxy’s star striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic was held out to rest. Galaxy Score Twice In Stoppage Time, Beat Revs 3-2
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Kole Calhoun homered on his first pitch from All-Star closer Kenley Jansen in the 10th inning, lifting the Los Angeles Angels to a 5-4 victory over the Dodgers on Saturday night after the Angels blew two leads in the Freeway Series. Four of the Angels’ five games against the Dodgers this season have been decided by one run. The Angels lead the season series 3-2. Angels manager Mike Scioscia equaled fellow catcher-turned-manager Ralph Houk for 18th on the career victories list with his 1,619th. Calhoun’s ninth homer went over the right-field wall with two outs against Jansen (0-3). The Angels led 3-0 in the second and 4-3 in the seventh before the Dodgers rallied twice to tie the game. The Dodgers put the potential tying run on in the bottom of the 10th when Andrew Toles doubled to deep left. Justin Upton collided with the wall trying to make the catch and the trainer came out to check on him, although he stayed in the game. Toles took third on a passed ball by but pinch-hitter Chase Utley flied out to center and Yasmani Grandal struck out swinging against Jose Alvarez (4-3) to end the game. The Dodgers tied it 4-all in the ninth. Grandal doubled to deep left off Blake Parker. Upton chased the ball to the wall, allowing Utley to score from first on a one-legged slide that narrowly beat the throw to the plate. The Dodgers went on to load the bases, but pinch-hitter Joc Pederson flied out to center to send the game to the 10th. Upton hit a go-ahead, two-out homer, his 19th, in the seventh to put the Angels back in front 4-3. He went 2 for 4 with two strikeouts and a walk, drove in two other runs and scored a run. Angels All-Star Mike Trout was limited to a single in four at-bats with a walk and a strikeout. The Dodgers had threatened in the eighth when they got the potential tying and go-ahead runs on. All-Star Matt Kemp singled leading off and took second on Parker’s wild pitch. After striking out Max Muncy, Parker walked Pederson and struck out Cody Bellinger. Toles flied out to left-center, although Upton and Trout nearly collided before Upton made the catch. Chris Taylor tied the game 3-all in the fifth with a leadoff homer, giving the Dodgers 127 home runs, which leads the National League. They are two shy of tying the team record for most homers before the All-Star break set in 2000. The Dodgers trailed 3-2 in the second. Bellinger had an RBI single and Angels starter Andrew Heaney hit Taylor with the bases loaded. The Angels led 3-0 on Upton’s RBI single in the first and a pair of runs in the second. David Fletcher had a sacrifice fly and Upton drew a bases-loaded, two-out walk that scored Heaney, who reached on an infield single to first. Heaney gave up three runs — two earned — and six hits in 6 1/3 innings. The left-hander struck out six and walked one. Dodgers starter Alex Wood allowed three runs and seven hits in six innings of his team-high 19th start. The left-hander struck out six and walked two. After two messy innings, Wood settled down to retire 12 of his final 14 batters. TRAINER’S ROOM Dodgers: 3B Justin Turner (strained right adductor) remains day-to-day although he was available to pinch-hit. With the All-Star break, he is unlikely to need to go on the DL. … RHP Pedro Baez (right biceps tendinitis) is expected to be the first reliever back after the break, followed by LHP Tony Cingrani (left shoulder strain) and RHP Josh Fields (right shoulder inflammation). … LHP Julio Urias (left shoulder surgery rehab) has thrown two simulated games and is being pointed toward a starting spot. UP NEXT The Angels have not announced a starter for Sunday’s series finale. Clayton Kershaw (3-4, 2.61) makes his fifth start since coming off the disabled list for the Dodgers. He is 2-0 with a 2.25 ERA in the four starts since his return. The left-hander has 17 strikeouts and two walks in 20 innings since June 23. (@Copyright 2018. The Associated Press. Kole Calhoun Homers In Top Of 10th Inning, Angels Beat Dodgers 5-4
NEW YORK (AP) — Zack Wheeler won for the first time since April 29, Michael Conforto homered and the New York Mets defeated the Washington Nationals, 7-4 on Saturday. Wilmer Flores, Jose Reyes and Kevin Plawecki each had two hits as the light-hitting Mets scored seven runs for the first time since June 24. New York came into the game last in the National League in batting average and was tied with San Diego for the third-fewest runs scored in the majors. New York Mets’ Zack Wheeler pitches in the sixth inning against the Washington Nationals at Citi Field on July 14, 2018. (Photo by Jim McIsaac/Getty Images) Wheeler (3-6) was brilliant for seven innings before tiring in the eighth in his longest outing since June 19, 2014. He struck out seven and allowed just one hit through the first five innings. The 28-year old right-hander opened the season with a victory against Miami on April 11 and then defeated the Padres two weeks later. The victory snapped a 13-start winless streak and was Wheeler’s first victory at Citi Field this season, despite allowing just 10 earned runs over his last 37 2-3 innings at home. New York roughed up Austin Voth (0-1), who was making his major league debut. After a quiet first inning that included the 26-year old right-hander striking out Mets leadoff hitter Brandon Nimmo on three pitches, Voth ran into immediate trouble in the second. Flores singled to lead off the frame and moved to second on a Plawecki single. Voth was unable to help his own cause, pausing for too long after fielding Jose Reyes’ chopper to throw out the still speedy infielder. Amed Rosario remained hot, singling through the right side to score Flores with the first run of the game. Wheeler lofted a sacrifice fly and Nimmo drove in a run with a groundout to give New York a three-run lead. The Mets reached Voth for four in the fifth, three coming on Conforto’s first home run since June 26. Voth, who did not pitch in his two prior stints with Washington allowed all seven runs and struck out three. He was the fourth starting pitcher to make his major league against the Mets, but was the first to suffer a loss. Brandishing a fastball that touched 97 and an assortment of breaking pitches, Wheeler was able to keep Washington off-balance until the Nationals finally broke through on Bryce Harper’s RBI single in the sixth. New York manager Mickey Callaway left Wheeler in the game to face Harper again with a runner on in the eighth, and the right-hander struck out the slumping Harper on seven pitches. Harper finished 1 for 4 and has just two multi-hit games since June 9. The All-Star outfielder had a pre-game meeting with manager Dave Martinez after Harper failed to run out a fifth-inning ground ball Friday. After finding success against Harper, Wheeler wasn’t as lucky against Matt Adams. Adams lofted a fly ball to right field that appeared to carom off a fan’s hands and was played by Jose Bautista, who immediately pointed in the fan’s direction. The play was ruled a home run and after a crew chief review, remained a home run, ending Wheeler’s day. Jeurys Familia pitched a perfect for his 17th save in 21 chances. TRAINER’S ROOM Nationals: RHP Stephen Strasburg (right shoulder inflammation) is scheduled for a rehab start Sunday for Single-A Potomac. Manager Dave Martinez indicated he hoped Strasburg would throw between 80 and 85 pitches. Strasburg would be in position to start Washington’s first game after the All-Star break versus Atlanta . Catcher Matt Wieters was given the day off after playing in three straight games. He was activated from the disabled list on July 9 after missing two months after surgery on his left hamstring. Mets: Infielder T.J. Rivera (Tommy John surgery) was removed after five innings from a rehab game with Triple-A Las Vegas Friday with discomfort in his right arm. He is scheduled to undergo further testing . OF Yoenis Cespedes (strained right hip flexor) is ready to progress to something “a little more strenuous”, although Callaway did not indicate what Cespedes’ next would be. The Mets will play three games against the New York Yankees after the All-Star break and Callaway left open the possibility that the ailing outfielder could serve as the Mets’ designated hitter for the series. Callaway did note that Cespedes would return as New York’s left fielder, ending any speculation of a potential position change for the 32-year old. UP NEXT RHP Jeremy Hellickson (3-1, 3.47 ERA) takes to the mound for Washington in the final game before the All-Star break. Hellickson spun five scoreless frames against Pittsburgh on July 10. He has reached the sixth inning just once in 12 starts and has yet to reach 100 pitches. He’ll be opposed by New York’s Corey Oswalt (0-2, 6.75 ERA). (© Copyright 2018 The Associated Press.
