LONDON (AP) — A woman who was poisoned by a military-grade nerve agent in southwest England died Sunday, eight days after police think she touched a contaminated item that has not been found. London’s Metropolitan Police force said the case had become a homicide investigation now that 44-year-old Dawn Sturgess had died in a hospital in Salisbury. She and her boyfriend, Charlie Rowley, 45, were admitted June 30 and remained in critical condition. Police said tests showed the pair was exposed to Novichok, the same type of nerve agent used to poison former Russian spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter, Yulia, in Salisbury in March. Police suspect Rowley and Sturgess handled an item from the first attack, which Britain blames on Russia. Moscow denies involvement. Prime Minister Theresa May said she was “appalled and shocked” by Sturgess’s death. “Police and security officials are working urgently to establish the facts of this incident, which is now being treated as murder,” May said. Assistant Commissioner Neil Basu, Britain’s top anti-terrorism police officer, said the death “has only served to strengthen our resolve” to find those responsible. More than 100 police officers have been working to locate a small vial or other container thought to have held the nerve agent that sickened the two. Officials say the search and cleanup operation will take weeks or even month. Counterterrorism police are also studying roughly 1,300 hours of closed circuit television footage in hopes of finding clues about the couple’s activities in the hours before they became violently ill. Detectives want to know where the couple was to get new leads on where the contamination might have occurred. Britain maintains the March attack on the Skripals had been ordered by the Russian government, a charge denied by representatives of Russian President Vladimir Putin. The case led to the expulsion of Russian diplomats from Britain, the United States, and other countries, and tit-for-tat retaliation by Moscow. The new poisoning has frightened some residents who thought an extensive cleanup had removed the threat of any further Novichok exposure. Hospital officials said late Saturday that a number of people including a police officer had sought medical advice in the last week but had been found not to need any treatment. John Glen, the Conservative Party legislator for the region, said the new poisoning has threatened an economic rebound from the slowdown caused by the attack on the Skripals. “We need to establish quickly what they came into contact with and where,” he said. “The sentiment in the city is frustration, we want to get back to normal.” Britain’s interior minister visited Salisbury and nearby Amesbury, where the couple fell ill, on Sunday to reassure residents that the risk to the public remains low. Home Secretary Sajid Javid said the area is open for business and urged people to visit what he called one of the most beautiful parts of the country. (© Copyright 2018 The Associated Press. British Police Open Murder Probe As 1 Of 2 Nerve Agent Victims Dies
TOWN OF BROOKHAVEN, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) – A Long Island teen coping with the sudden loss of her father got an incredible gesture from the local fire department. As CBS2’s Lisa Rozner reports, they pulled off a special surprise – not once, but twice. John Pouletsos served the Terryville Fire Department for 50 years. The man, known for his infectious smile, was a chief, commissioner and, perhaps his most important role, father to 18-year-old Cara. He died of a heart attack in March at 67 years old, a few months shy of his daughter’s senior prom. “He was there when we picked out my dress,” she told Rozner. “He was going to wait in the car and he was like, ‘Oh no, I want to come out, I want to take a picture of you in the dress,’ when I wasn’t even sure what dress I was getting.” So last month, Pouletsos’s firefighters answered a very important call to get that picture for him. “We felt we should be there for John, to be there for her. And that was the first then we said. He wasn’t there to take the picture with her going to her senior prom, so we would,” said Terryville Fire Department Chief Thomas Young. About two dozen men and women crashed the dance and surprised Cara to get that photo. “All of a sudden, I just see all of these guys in uniform, and I was like, ‘What? What’s going on?’” she said. “I don’t think she knew what was going on at first, and then we all settled in, and she was just overwhelmed,” said Young. Two days later, Cara graduated from Comsewogue High School, decorating her cap in her father’s memory. An even bigger crew from the fire department showed up with another surprise, including several engines, brush trucks and ambulances. “They call my name, all of a sudden, the sirens go off, the lights go off, the horns, everythingf,” she said. Her mom, who met her dad while serving in the department herself, caught it all on video. “It’s a terrible tragedy that happened to our family, but the love and support that we’ve received has really carried us through,” said Cheryl Pouletsos. “I just felt like he was there with me… I didn’t feel like I needed to cry, because I felt like with all of them there, that he was there with me,” Cara added. She plans to follow her father’s footsteps. She’ll become a firefighter with the department in the fall, hoping to one day become chief of the department, too.

PASADENA (CBSLA) — A City of Pasadena employee has come under fire after video emerged of him telling a woman with a child in her car that she needed to learn how to drive. In the video, the unidentified man is heard saying, “You need to learn how to drive,” as he walks near his city-issued vehicle. The white Ford Focus with “Building & Safety” on it appears to block the woman’s car. The woman who recorded the incident wished to remain anonymous. She is heard confronting the man while he is on his mobile phone. “Bro, chill out,” she says. “Why don’t you chill out? I just almost rammed into her car, and all the stuff on the inside of my car is damaged,” he replies. The target of his harassment then tries to explain herself. “I’m not from here,” the woman says. “I don’t care where you’re from. Wherever you live, you gotta know how to drive. You’re driving a vehicle, aren’t you?” he asks. “I didn’t know you had to be so rude and mean,” the woman says. The bystander steps in, saying, “Yo, you can’t block her.” “I can do whatever I want,” the man says. “Um, you cannot. Just because you have a Building and Safety, […] You’re not the f—–g cops,” the witness chuckles. The man refuses to move his vehicle for several minutes before two security officers arrive, at which point he drives on, but not before confronting them, as well. “Who are you?” the man asks. “We’re private security. You’re parked on private property,” one of the officers says. “I work for the city and I have a…” the man says before getting interrupted. “Cool, I’m calling the city, too,” the bystander interjects. Unconvinced, the man continues, “So, you’re telling me that I can’t come in here and do my job?” “Yeah, you could do it, but we are telling you that you’ve got to leave her alone,” the guard says. “At the end of it, once he finally left, like, both she and her daughter teared up,” the woman who recorded the incident told CBS2 News. She said she wants the City of Pasadena to take action. “She aplogized. It’s like he wouldn’t stop being patronizing,” she said. A City of Pasadena spokesperson confirmed the man is their employee. However, they would not say what type of disciplinary action, if any, the man would face, as this is a personnel matter. The man is still employed with the city.
