HILLSBORO, Ore. (CBS Local) – An Oregon high school is making a costly apology after suspending a student for wearing a pro-Donald Trump t-shirt to class. Liberty High School in Hillsboro has agreed to pay $25,000 to senior Addison Barnes, who school officials suspended for wearing a shirt that read “Donald J. Trump Border Wall Construction Co.” Liberty High banned Barnes from wearing the shirt, which referenced the student’s support of the President’s illegal immigration and Homeland Security policies. But when I wore a pro-Trump shirt, I got suspended. That’s not right,” the 18-year-old told The Oregonian . Barnes sued the school after his January suspension and was granted a temporary restraining order by a judge in May. The federal judge’s decision barred the high school from enforcing their ban of the student’s t-shirt for the rest of the school year. Barnes graduated in June and the teen’s lawyer announced on July 24 that Liberty High School agreed to settle the matter with an apology. “Moving forward, we will continue to use professional discretion to meet both objectives and will actively seek ways to turn sensitive situations into learning opportunities,” Principal Greg Timmons wrote in his apology to Barnes. The $25,000 will reportedly help pay for the student’s legal fees. “I brought this case to stand up for myself and other students who might be afraid to express their right-of-center views,” the high school graduate explained.

NORTH CHICAGO, Ill. (CBS Local) – The FDA has just approved a new treatment for a condition that feels like “tiny people skating on razor blades in your stomach,” according to millions of women. Orilissa is an oral medication to help manage the severe menstrual pain caused by endometriosis, a condition where tissue in the lining of the uterus grows into other areas of the body and may require surgery. “Endometriosis is often characterized by chronic pelvic pain that can impact women’s daily activities,” Dr. Hugh S. Taylor from the Yale School of Medicine said in a press release . Drugmaker AbbVie added that the debilitating pain caused by this condition affects one in 10 women and can sometimes go undiagnosed for up to a decade. Michelle Kinney, whose had surgery three times for the severe period pains, told Business Insider that the pain felt “like little people in side her skating around on razor blades and other times like someone’s poured gasoline inside.” “There’s no getting up,” Kinney added. In March, doctors publicly acknowledged that a woman’s cramps can rival the pain caused by a heart attack . “There is a long history of not taking menstrual pain seriously and even writing it off as women’s hysteria,” Dr. Annalise Weckesser told reporters in 2017. The Endometriosis Foundation of America estimates that the affects 200 million women globally. Orilissa is expected to be available in U.S. pharmacies starting in August. It will reportedly cost $844.87 a month for a prescription.

By Dan Reardon The RBC Canadian Open trails the Open Championship in Scotland by a week and precedes the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational and the PGA Championship, the season’s last major, in two of the next three weeks. So even 100+ years of tournament history can’t necessarily compete with a player’s desire to be rested and on form for the most significant stops before the FedExCup playoffs. But the tournament backers innovated their own solution to solidify their fields, as did John Deere. With title involvement in the Heritage the week after the Masters and the Canadian, RBC established marquee representation on the PGA TOUR, knowing the dividends would pay off tournament week. Twelve of the top 50 in the world will tee it up this week at Glen Abbey, including #1 Dustin Johnson, #4 Brooks Koepka and #11 Tommy Fleetwood. Toss in highly ranked FedExCup performers Bubba Watson (#4) and Tony Finau (#10), along with former Masters champion Sergio Garcia, and there is plenty of crowd appeal. Two-time defending champion, Jhonattan Vegas, will be looking to three-peat this weekend, a rare accomplishment on the PGA TOUR. CBS Sports’ Peter Kostis, now spending time in the tower as well as on the course, shares some observations about the event. > > WATCH: The RBC Canadian Open Live Stream Glen Abbey, at a little over 7200 yards, is moderate in length by PGA TOUR standards. Where are the holes a player needs to worry about losing ground to the field, and where are the chances to move up? Starting with the dangerous holes, when you get down in the valley. The 11 th hole down the hill is a very difficult hole, and the next hole, the par-3, 12 th , [both] are places where a player can make a big number. Near the end of the stretch is the par-5 16 th , which can be taken advantage of, and also 18. A player can finish three-three-three there and make up a bunch of ground. This year on TOUR there has been a mini-trend that 54-hole leaders are not becoming 72-hole champions. A lot of hot rounds on Sunday. Any theories on why that is the case? They are setting up the golf courses [to be] a little more benign. They are not tucking the pins in ungodly places on Sunday. A few years ago, the 54-hole lead was the Holy Grail, because the pins were so difficult on Sunday that it turned it into the land of the 30-foot birdie putts for everyone. As a consequence, it was very difficult to make up ground. Now you can’t sit on a lead. You can’t go into a prevent defense on Sunday. You still have to stay on offense. It’s a pretty good field this week following a major. Pick a player or two that you like this week. Things are getting pretty tight at the top of the world rankings, so I have to look at Dustin Johnson. He would be my odds-on favorite this week to play well and maybe cement his position as World’s #1. > > MORE: Golf Expert Interviews Jhonattan Vegas, who has won this tournament the last two years, has done very little on TOUR this year. How much does the confidence of having won in Canada the last two times help to negate the poor performance in 2018? It’s always fun to go back to a place where you have had success. You remember the shots you’ve hit. You get a good vibe. And sometimes it can take a little bit of the pressure off that you invariably put on yourself when you’re not playing well. So going back to a place where you have won before is always a plus. It can let you back off and remember the successes you have had and maybe recreate that feeling. Starting with the Open, some players in the field are playing three of the four weeks in really high-stress events. What’s the key to being fresh over that stretch? Take Tiger, for example. He is taking the Canadian off and I think Greensboro off. But starting with the British, he is playing eight out 10 weeks, assuming he makes it all the way through the playoffs. This is the crunch time of the year. And a lot of players have realized that, and it’s reflected in their schedule. They took time off between the U.S. Open and the British Open to get rested, to get themselves refreshed and prepared mentally for the grind that is the next eight or nine weeks. A player who is getting a lot of love these days because of his showings, particularly in the majors, is Tommy Fleetwood. Is there still a difference between the American game and the European game, and what do you like about Fleetwood as a player? I like his golf swing. I like the aggressiveness and the confidence with which he plays. But I don’t necessarily buy into an American game and a European game anymore. If you look at the European Tour, I don’t know that they play more than 20 percent of their events in Europe. They’re in the Far East. They’re in the Middle East. They’re all over the place. There isn’t a big difference between the golf courses that the two Tours play, other than greens that are not quite as fast as on the U.S. Tour. Generally speaking, golf around the world has kind of homogenized itself. There is still the odd week, like the Open last week, where it’s completely unique to a lot of players. It was unique to a lot of the European players. They had never seen a golf course that was that fiery in recent memory. Dan Reardon has covered golf for radio station KMOX in St. Louis for 33 years. LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) – The heat wave which has scorched Southern California is expected to peak Wednesday and continue into Thursday, with more triple-digit temperatures and high humidity levels. Temperatures in Los Angeles County will be about 10 to 12 degrees above normal Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service. Temperatures will drop marginally Thursday at the start of a slow cooling trend. The humidity level generally will be at 25-to-30 percent Wednesday, which will increase hot-weather misery for residents but also marginally increase fire safety by decreasing the dryness, the NWS said. A LIST OF COOLING CENTERS IN LOS ANGELES COUNTY A LIST OF COOLING CENTERS IN ORANGE COUNTY An excessive heat warning is in effect until 8 p.m. Thursday throughout Los Angeles County — along the coast, in beach cities, metropolitan Los Angeles, downtown L.A. and the Hollywood Hills; the San Gabriel, San Fernando, Santa Clarita and Antelope valleys; the San Gabriel and Santa Monica mountains; and inland Orange County. Overnight low temperatures have offered little reprieve from the heat, ranging from 66 to 76 degrees. The heat wave will also create an increased potential for power outages because of the widespread use of air-conditioning. The California Independent System Operator — which manages the state’s power grid – – has issued a statewide Flex Alert that calls for voluntary electricity conservation from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday. The same alert was also issued Tuesday. Several daily heat records were broken Tuesday. The temperature in Woodland Hills hit a 108 degree high, breaking the record of 107 set on July 24, 2006. Lancaster reached 109 degrees, tying the record also set in 2006. The NWS forecast highs Wednesday of 97 in Downtown L.A., 101 in San Gabriel, 103 in Pasadena and Burbank, 110 in Woodland Hills, Saugus, Palmdale and Lancaster. LAX will see a high of 85 degrees, 89 in Long Beach, 91 in Avalon and 95 on Mount Wilson. Orange County will see highs of 81 in San Clemente, 82 in Newport Beach, 83 in Laguna Beach, 96 in Irvine, 97 in Anaheim, 98 in Fullerton, 99 in Mission Viejo and 102 in Yorba Linda. LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) — Another snack food is under recall Wednesday. Kraft Heinz is recalling about 7,000 cases of its Taco Bell Cheese dip due to risk of botulism. The dips under recall are the 15-ounce jars of Taco Bell Salsa Con Queso mild cheese dip that have a use-by date ranging from Oct. 31, 2018 to Jan. 23, 2019. The dip had showed signs that it could allow for the growth of bacteria, which causes botulism. Consumers should not eat the product, even if it does not look or smell spoiled. No illnesses have been reported. The cheese dip can be returned to stores or call 1-800-310-3704 for a full refund. The cheese dip recall is the third snack food to be recalled this week.
