MARION COUNTY, Fla. (CBS Local) – A Florida turtle had a hilarious run-in with the law when the animal refused to “pull over” to let traffic pass by. Deputy Bryan Bowman from the Marion County Sheriff’s Office was on patrol on July 15 when he saw “this dude” walking in the middle of the road. Seeing “multiple traffic infractions occurring,” Bowman decided to try to move the large turtle off the road. However, the slow-moving tortoise wasn’t cooperating with Bowman and the deputy decided to post his “outrage” on Facebook. The deputy’s video has already been viewed over 80,000 times . Bowman says the stubborn road hog kept going for 20 minutes before finally heading into the woods.

HACIENDA HEIGHTS (CBSLA) – Police have released a sketch of a man of interest wanted in connection with the mysterious shooting death of a 27-year-old Hacienda Heights man more than 12 years ago. (L.A. County Sheriff’s Department) On Dec. 6, 2005, Edward Berber was found shot to death at his home in the 1800 block of Charlemont Avenue. He was discovered dead by his mother after she went to check up on him after having not heard from him for several days. In a news conference Tuesday, Sheriff Jim McDonnell said that it appears that Berber was shot while sleeping. Nothing was stolen from the home and there was no sign of forced entry. At this time, investigators do not have a connection between the person of interest and the victim, or a possible motive in the killing. “This is definitely not the normal case,” Sgt. Robert Marindale said. “And there’s nothing in Edward’s background to suggest that he had any falling out with anyone in the neighborhood, or any of the family at this point.” Edward Berber. (LASD) Investigators believe that Berber was killed sometime between Dec. 2 and Dec. 5. Berber, who had two children ages 3 and 8 at the time, was estranged from his wife and in the process of getting a divorce, McDonnell said. His children were with their mother, Tanya. Berber was home alone. “My brother had goals, he worked all his life to be accomplished and professional, with a master’s degree from Notre Dame, was about to take his CPA test,” said Berber’s sister, Alejandra Johnson. “He had dreams and goals, not just for him, but for his family.” The composite was developed based on re-interviewing witnesses, Marindale said. It depicts what the person of interest looked like back in 2005. “With the advancements in forensic science, investigators are hopeful that retesting the physical and biological evidence will help to jumpstart the investigation, and potentially identify the suspect or suspects,” McDonnell said. A $10,000 reward has been offered for information leading to an arrest. Anyone within information is asked to call LASD at 323-890-5500, or Crime Stoppers at 800-222-TIPS.

PORTLAND, Maine (CBS Local) – A city in Maine is taking another look at granting non U.S. citizens the right to vote in its local elections. Portland, which has reportedly failed to pass the idea in three previous tries, is scheduled to hold a public hearing on the controversial plan again on August 13 . The Portland City Council is expected to listen to the proposal being pushed by Mayor Ethan Strimling and Councilman Pious Ali. The potential amendment to the city charter would allow people legally in the country who are not citizens, such as asylum seekers and refugees, the ability to vote in municipal elections. Non-citizens would be able to vote on referendums like school budgets and races for the City Council. Illegal immigrants would still not be allowed to vote under the mayor’s plan. When it comes to major U.S. elections, voting rules are much stricter. Anyone under 18 and all non-citizens are not allowed to vote. Rules regarding convicted felons and the mentally incapacitated vary from state to state.

Sterling, VA (CBS Local)- A pickup game at a LA Fitness gym in Virginia took a serious turn when one of the participants called the police after being fouled. Today for the first time in my life…I experienced someone call the police because they got fouled hard in basketball. pic.twitter.com/9E8lp9fmwP — TrapMoneyBenny (@_togs) July 17, 2018 The user who posted the photo to Twitter spoke to Fox 29 about the incident. He told the station that the man who called the police is a regular at the LA Fitness in Dulles Town Center and has played basketball there many times. Apparently, the man ran into a hard screen during the course of the pickup game and was knocked to the floor. According to the witness, identified as Aaron, the man was upset by the screen and threatened to call the police before walking off the court. Aaron believed the man was joking, but sure enough the man went to the front desk to call 911. “When the cops came, he was like, ‘why are you wasting my time?’” Aaron told FOX 5. The gym has confirmed that the incident occurred, but there is no surveillance footage of the incident because there are no cameras focused on the court. The Loudon County Sheriff’s Office has yet to comment.

FORT MORGAN, Ala. (CBS Local) – Wildlife conservationists in Alabama are expressing outrage after the body of an endangered type of sea turtle washed ashore with a beach chair wrapped around its neck. The graphic Facebook post documents how a discarded chair with the University of Alabama logo on it was tangled around the animal’s neck as it laid face up on the Fort Morgan beach. “The chair had barnacles on it so had been in the water for a while. So much stuff left on the beach washes into the gulf. Why we need something like ‘Leave Only Footprints,’” Debbie Harbin of Share the Beach Fort Morgan told WKRG . “Leave Only Footprints” promotes green initiatives and raises awareness about the dangers of littering in Alabama and the Gulf Coast region. Kemp’s Ridley sea turtles are classified as endangered by the U.S. Federal Endangered Species Act.

PASADENA (CBSLA) – Pasadena police are expected to release dash cam video Tuesday which officials claim will exonerate two officers who are accused in a lawsuit of sexually assaulting a mother and her adult daughter during a traffic stop more than two years ago. The two women filed a $25 million civil rights lawsuit in U.S. district court in April against the city of Pasadena and the Pasadena Police Department over a traffic stop that occurred on the afternoon of May 2, 2016, in the area of Altadena Drive and Foothill Boulevard. According to the complaint, the officers, identified as Brendan Thebeau and Carey (no last name given), violated the civil rights of 43-year-old Sharell Thompson, and her daughter, 22-year-old Sharaya Brown. In a statement to CBS2 Monday, Officer Lisa Derderian, a Pasadena police spokeswoman, called the allegations “baseless and said “the claims on which the lawsuit rests are easily proven false.” “The in-car camera footage from the patrol car clearly shows that the officers acted appropriately.” Derderian wrote that the officers initiated the traffic stop “based upon a detective investigation and traffic violation witnessed by police.” The officers “remained professional the entire time,” Derderian wrote. They conducted “necessary searches of the individuals –a waist-band check for weapons — and of the vehicle.” Derderian went on: “After the vehicle and individuals were searched and questioned, they were free to leave the scene.” The lawsuit, however, contends the officers physically searched the women without probable cause or justification, with one of the male officers “using his bare hands to rub between (the) legs,” in the areas of the “crotch” and “buttocks” and inside the pants of the daughter. The suit alleges that one of the officers forced the mother to lift her shirt and “expose her breasts” in public view. Even though the mother immediately drove to the Pasadena Police Department after the stop to lodge a complaint, the police department failed to seriously investigate the claims and refused to take any disciplinary action against the officers, the lawsuit alleges. FLORIDA (CBS Local) – A couple in Florida is warning other parents about food packaging labels after their teenage daughter died from eating a cookie. Kellie Travers-Stafford and her husband, Michael, lost their 15-year-old after she reportedly ate a Chips Ahoy! cookie while at a friend’s house. Alexi Ryann Stafford, who had a peanut allergy, didn’t realize the cookie she took was one of Chips Ahoy’s “Reese’s peanut butter cups” treats. Tragically, the teen went into anaphylactic shock and died shortly after eating the cookie on June 25. Her mother’s Facebook post about the tragedy on July 12 has been shared over 70,000 times. The parents are calling for greater awareness about packaging labels which may not make it clear that the products inside are harmful to people with peanut allergies. Travers-Stafford says her daughter’s mistake was caused by the cookie wrapper being pulled back and there not being a warning notice on the label for peanut allergy sufferers. “I feel lost and angry because she knew her limits and was aware of familiar packaging, she knew what ‘safe’ was,” the mother wrote. “A small added indication on the pulled back flap on a familiar red package wasn’t enough to call out to her that there was “peanut product” in the cookies before it was too late.” A memorial fund for the teen was set up by friends and family on GoFundMe . The page has raised nearly $30,000 in three weeks to cover the family’s funeral expenses.
