GRANADA HILLS (CBSLA) – A bear made its way through a Granada Hills residential neighborhood Tuesday, and at one point decided to take a dip in a backyard pool. (CBS2) The bear was first spotted in the 16000 block of Timber Ridge Drive at 10:37 a.m. according to Los Angeles police. The bear was discovered sitting under a tree in the front yard of a home. CBS2 chopper video caught footage of the bear hopping a fence and then jumping into a backyard pool in the 13100 block of Whistler Avenue. (CBS2) After taking a swim, the bear jumped out and wandered into Bee Canyon Park. Residents were asked to stay inside during the ordeal. A little before 1:30 p.m., U.S. Forest Service officers tranquilized the bear with a dart. They will then transport it into a rural area, and safely release it back into the wild. Thee animal was seen sporting a tag on one of its ears, meaning Tuesday’s visit to a suburban setting likely wasn’t its first. (CBS2) A photo posted to LAPD Devonshire’s Facebook page clearly showed the red tag the bear was wearing.

Cops Used Coin-Flip App To Decide Whether To Arrest A Woman
PELHAM, Ala. (CBS Local) – It was supposed to be Walter Carr’s first day of work with a moving company Sunday when his car broke down. But, instead of calling out, he walked through the night to be on time. Carr’s vehicle stopped working the night before his first day with the moving company Bellhops, and he knew he couldn’t miss it. So, he decided to walk. Carr began his hike from Homewood, Alabama, to the town of Pelham, Alabama, at midnight – a nearly 20-mile journey. He had reportedly walked about 14 miles before local police stepped in to help the young man, according CBS affiliate WIAT-TV . Once police heard his story, they took Carr to breakfast. Then, they gave him a ride the rest of the way to the home of the Lamey family, who he was scheduled to help move that morning. Carr arrived at the home of Jenny Hayden Lamey and her family before the rest of the movers arrived. “I asked Walter if he wanted to go upstairs and rest until everyone else arrived,” said Lamey in a Facebook post , “He declined and said he could go ahead and get started.” So, the family and Carr began packing up the home, chatting along the way. Lamey discovered that Carr and his mother were from New Orleans, but moved to Alabama after losing their home during Hurricane Katrina. “He looked at me in the eye and smiled and I felt like I had known him much longer,” wrote Lamey of the pair’s interaction that morning. The rest of the crew arrived later in the morning and Lamey insisted Carr share the story of his grueling night with the other movers. “Walter said ‘I walked.’ That was it. Humble,” Lamey added. “I asked him to share a little more and when he did, the crew was in awe of him too! I don’t know that Walter would have shared if I hadn’t asked him to.” Lamey shared the story of Walter and her move on Facebook — the post quickly went viral. And word eventually got back to the CEO of the Bellhops moving company, Luke Marklin. This is an incredible story. The grit and heart Walter showed defines Bellhops' culture precisely. I'm really proud to be on the same team as Walter… we set a high bar on service and he just raised it. Look forward to thanking him in person this week. https://t.co/Fr4ytu5CM1 — Luke Marklin (@LukeMarklin) July 15, 2018 “I’m really proud to be on the same team as Walter,” Marklin wrote on Twitter, “We set a high bar on service and he just raised it. Look forward to thanking him in person this week.” Marklin did a bit more than just thank Carr – he gifted Carr his 2014 Ford Escape, according to WIAT-TV. Proud to have encountered this young man. He certainly made an impact on us! #PelhamPD #belikewalter pic.twitter.com/d0zz0PMvnv — Pelham Police Dept (@PelhamPoliceAL) July 16, 2018 While the young man’s long walks to work may be over, few will forget the perseverance he showed along the way. Man Walks 20 Miles To First Day Of Work, Given A Car For His Effort
Ryan Mayer The St. Louis Cardinals missed the playoffs just four times between 2000 and 2015, while making the World Series four times and winning twice. The franchise was seen as one of the gold standards in the league and had seemingly undergone a successful transition at manager from Tony LaRussa to Mike Matheny. Well, the last two and a half years haven’t been as kind to the Cardinals, and on Saturday it cost Matheny his job. St. Louis, 48-46, have missed the playoffs each of the last two seasons and enter the All-Star break seven-and-a-half games back of the Cubs in the division race and four games back in the battle for the Wild Card. The franchise hasn’t missed the playoffs in three consecutive seasons since 1997-1999 and clearly, executives thought a change was needed in order to avoid that fate. In addition to the team’s performance on the field, there were incidents off the field, like the situation between closer Bud Norris and reliever Jordan Hicks , that seemed to factor into the decision. Either way, over the course of his six-and-a-half seasons at the helm of the squad, Matheny went 592-474 with a World Series appearance back in 2013, when the Cards lost to the Red Sox in six games. While the Cardinals are looking for a new manager, the New York Mets could be looking for a new ace if they don’t negotiate a new contract with Jacob deGrom. Reports this week indicated that deGrom’s agent had told the team that the 30-year-old righty is interested in locking into a long-term deal to stay in the Big Apple. But, that came with a caveat. deGrom’s agent, Brodie van Wagenen of CAA, told reporters that if the Mets do not share that same interest in a long-term contract, the team should immediately begin looking for a trade. That’s not quite an outright trade request from deGrom, but it’s as close as one can get. In fairness to deGrom, he is certainly out-performing his contract, as through 123 innings pitched this season he’s allowed just 23 earned runs, good for a minuscule 1.68 ERA. He becomes arbitration-eligible after this season, but the team still has two years of control through the arbitration process before he could become a free agent in 2021. (CBS NEWS) – President Trump on Tuesday claimed he has full faith in U.S. intelligence agencies, on the heels of his widely criticized meeting and press conference with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Mr. Trump made those comments at the beginning of a meeting with members of Congress, claiming he meant to say in the meeting in Helsinki, Finland, that he had no reason to think it was anyone other than Russia that interfered in the 2016 election. Mr. Trump made the comments in the face of a flood of criticism, even from Republicans, over his meeting and press conference Monday with Putin. In that press conference, Mr. Trump appeared to side with Putin over his won intelligence agencies on the subject of election meddling. Still, Mr. Trump emphasized that any actions Russia took had no impact on the presidential election, and diplomacy with Russia is important. The president called his meeting with Putin more successful than his NATO meeting, claiming he and Putin made progress on conflicts. Mr. Trump, as he has in the past, emphasized that getting along with Russia is a desirable thing. The president, according to the White House press cool, ignored a question as to whether he will publicly condemn Putin. Only a small handful of Republicans, like Sen. Rand Paul, R-Kentucky, have defended Mr. Trump . Director of National Intelligence Dan Coates issued a statement following the Putin meeting that clearly broke with Mr. Trump’s stance during the Putin press conference. The president’s comments alongside members of Congress came after he seemed to double down on his press conference with Putin earlier in the day. Mr. Trump, rather than backing down from his comments with Putin, doubled down on them Tuesday. Mr. Trump tweeted that he has “an even better meeting with Vladimir Putin of Russia” than he did with NATO. © 2018 CBS Interactive Inc. All Rights Reserved.
