CALABASAS (CBSLA) — Two shootings in a week have been reported in the area of the Calabasas campground where a scientist was found shot to death. The shootings were reported last Monday and last Thursday near Malibu Creek State Park, which has been the site of at least seven shootings this year, including the one that killed 35-year-old Tristan Beaudette , who was camping at the park with his two young daughters. The girls, ages 2 and 4, were not injured. No evidence of a shooting was found in last week’s shootings. No arrests have been made in any of the seven shootings, which all occurred mostly during night time hours. Malibu Creek State Park has been closed to overnight guests since the fatal shooting, and patrols have been stepped up in the area.

EL MONTE (CBSLA) – A two-alarm fire tore through an abandoned former car dealership in El Monte Tuesday morning. (CBS2) The fire was reported at 6:30 a.m. at a single-story commercial structure in the 3300 block of North Santa Anita Avenue. Los Angeles County Fire Department crews responded to find the building well-involved in flames, Inspector David Michael reporters. Due to the intensity of the blaze, firefighters were unable to enter the building and were forced to take a defensive approach. “We did have a collapse on three of the walls on the building,” Michael said. The fire was knocked down by about 7:30 a.m. There were no reported injuries. It is unclear if anyone was in the building at the time the fire occurred, Michael said. According to Michael, two hours prior to the commercial fire, at about 4:30 a.m., LACFD crews had responded to a warming fire nearby. Firefighters quickly knocked down that blaze, but found no one in the area. It’s unclear if the two fires are connected, Michael said. Arson investigators are waiting for excavators to come and knock down the walls so that it will be safe for them to enter and begin their investigation. “We are waiting for excavators,” Michael said. “Right now it’s unsafe to enter the building and do a search.” The building where the fire broke out was a former car dealership which has been vacant for some time, Michael disclosed. Santa Anita Avenue was shut down in both directions.

LOS ANGELES (CNN) — Showtime says comedian Sacha Baron Cohen did not claim to be a disabled veteran to secure any interview subjects for his series “Who Is America,” despite claims from former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin to the contrary. “There has been widespread misinformation over the past week about the character of Billy Wayne Ruddick Jr., Ph.D., performed by Sacha Baron Cohen on the Showtime comedy series ‘Who Is America?’ Baron Cohen did not present himself as a disabled veteran, and viewers nationwide who watched the premiere on Sunday can now attest to that,” the statement issued Monday said. Showtime also points out that Cohen’s character “did not wear military apparel of any kind” in his interviews with Senator Bernie Sanders and Palin and even specifies at one point in the show that he is not disabled. In the first episode, Ruddick, as portrayed by Cohen, says he uses a mobility scooter to “conserve” his body’s “finite energy.” “In addition, Baron Cohen never presented himself as a veteran of the U.S. military to former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin during the booking process or during the filming of her interview, and contrary to her claims he did not appear in a wheelchair,” the statement said. Cohen’s show received much attention ahead of its premiere after a number of politicians, including Palin and former Alabama senate candidate Roy Moore, said they’d been duped into appearing. On the satirical program, Cohen spins off a concept he originated with “Da Ali G Show” by appearing as different characters in interview segments and skits with subjects who are not in on the joke. The first episode featured appearances from former Mississippi senator Trent Lott, former congressman Joe Walsh, GOP congressmen Matt Gaetz, Rep. Dana Rohrabacher and Rep. Joe Wilson. Showtime has not said when the episode featuring Palin will air. The-CNN-Wire & © 2018 Cable News Network, Inc., a Time Warner Company. All rights reserved.

LAS VEGAS (CBSLA) — New video shows a Las Vegas police officer firing several shots through his own windshield while chasing down two murder suspects at high speed. Las Vegas police released the video on Facebook Monday of the officer-involved shooting last Wednesday. The footage was taken from the officer’s body camera. The video shows the officer driving at high speed, weaving between cars stopped at a red light, asking for assistance from a police helicopter and frantically repeating “shots fired, shots fired” to a dispatcher while pursuing a black SUV. The police cruiser’s siren can also be heard blaring loudly as he describes the suspects and his location, and yells at another police unit to “back up, he’s shooting!” The officer eventually took out his own handgun with the other hand on the wheel, and begins firing through his windshield, and out of the open driver’s side window at the SUV. The SUV, with its rear and back windows shot out, stops and drifts toward the side of a building, while the officer gets out of his cruiser and continues shooting toward it. Police say one of the suspects was killed in the gun battle, while the other was wounded but is expected to survive. They were both wanted for murder, according to police.
