LOS ANGELES, Calif. (CBS Local) – A study of teens using high-tech devices has found a link between constant use of digital media and ADHD. According to scientists at USC, teens who are “heavy users” of digital devices like smartphones were twice as likely to show symptoms of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder than adolescents who only use the gadgets occasionally. “New, mobile technologies can provide fast, high-intensity stimulation accessible all day, which has increased digital media exposure far beyond what’s been studied before,” Adam Leventhal, professor of preventive medicine and psychology at USC said in a press release . Researchers examined nearly 2,600 public school students in Los Angeles County from 2014 to 2016 and tracked how often they used “14 popular digital media platforms.” The study, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association , discovered that 9.5 percent of the students who used half of the tested platforms had developed ADHD. Over 10 percent of the teens that reported using all of the platforms were found to have ADHD symptoms. Less than 500 students reported being infrequent users of digital media. Among those teens, only 4.6 percent of the students had been diagnosed with attention deficit disorder. “We can say with confidence that teens who were exposed to higher levels of digital media were significantly more likely to develop ADHD symptoms in the future,” Leventhal added. The USC team said they focused the two-year study on 15 and 16-year-olds because adolescence was a common point for the onset of ADHD and was also the point where children normally get “unfettered access to digital media.”

President Trump later denied that Russia is currently targeting the United States. LOS ANGELES (CBSLA/AP) — Monsoonal flow has brought thunderstorms and strong winds to the deserts of Southern California have moved into Los Angeles proper. An urban and small stream flood was advisory for San Bernardino and Riverside counties early Wednesday morning and was canceled around 4:30 a.m. when the threat of flooding ended. That same system moved into Los Angeles County just before lunchtime, bringing rain, thunder and lightning to cities like Glendale, Beverly Hills and the San Fernando Valley. At 12:00pm #SantaMonica beach evacuated due to #lightning the #CBSLA radar picture below shows the radar lit up. Lightning strikes prompted city officials in Santa Monica to order the evacuation of ocean and beach areas, and advise people to move indoors on the famed Santa Monica Pier. Further inland, lightning kept water-dropping helicopters grounded in the battle against a small brush fire in the Encino area. Weather Friday and Saturday is expected to be a little drier, followed by warming as high pressure expands into Southern California. (© Copyright 2018 CBS Broadcasting Inc. All Rights Reserved. LYNCHBURG, Va. (CBS Local) – A Virginia restaurant is facing public backlash after they shamed a 17-year-old customer who paid for his meal in change. Cohen Naulty took his friends to lunch at Beer 88 in Lynchburg on July 16. The teen, who works as a server at another restaurant in Virginia, only had a $20 bill and the quarters he collected from his tips to pay for the meal. Naulty paid the $45 check with his change and also reportedly left a $10 tip on top if it. Seemingly ungrateful for the tip, the Beer 88 staff took to social media to mock the teen’s payment. “We’ll just caption this…How NOT to pay at a restaurant, cause that’s the nicest thing we can think to say about this ridiculousness,” Beer 88 wrote, along with the hashtag “#nohometraining.” “If anybody met Cohen, they know it couldn’t be the farthest thing from the truth, and you know… he’s a good kid,” Cohen’s mother Kim Naulty said to WSET . The post immediately received a tremendous amount of backlash from the community, which was perceived as an attack on a teen who was treating his friends to lunch. “I love paying for people’s meals even if I have to scrape together my last quarters to do so,” the teen wrote on Facebook. Naulty turned the incident into a positive by setting up an online fundraiser that will collect spare change to pay for other people’s meals. “Even though I got blasted for it, it only served to make me realize how much I love doing this,” Naulty explained. “Paying for someone’s meal can change a really bad day around in just one moment of kindness… I am sure there are places out there that wouldn’t mind being paid in quarters.” Beer 88 initially defended their online shaming of the 17-year-old, hitting back at critics by posting “Obviously the SARCASM and HUMOR of this post is lost on most of y’all.” By July 17, the online post was deleted and Beer 88 apologized for the incident.

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – A dozen alleged gang members were indicted Wednesday in the murder of 15-year-old Lesandro “Junior” Guzman-Feliz last month in the Bronx. Kevin Alvarez, 19, Elvin Garcia, 23, Antonio Rodriguez Hernandez Santiago, 24, Manuel Rivera, 18, Danel Fernandez, 21, Jonaiki Martinez Estrella, 24, Jose Muniz, 22, Jose Tavarez, 21, Danilo Payamps Pacheco, 21, Diego Suero, 29, Gabriel Ramirez Concepcion, 26, and Luis Cabrera Santos, AKA Luis Rodriguez, 25, are charged with second-degree murder, first-degree manslaughter, second-degree conspiracy, first-degree gang assault, second-degree gang assault and fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon. Additionally, five of the suspects – Garcia, Rodriguez Hernandez Santiago, Rivera and Muniz – are charged with first-degree murder, including torture. All 12 men appeared in court Wednesday morning, where they pleaded not guilty. Bronx Criminal Court was packed with Guzman-Feliz’s family members, including his mother who yelled “murderers” at the suspects, CBS2’s Natalie Duddridge reported. The last man taken into custody , 25-year-old Luis Cabrera Santos, was extradited from Connecticut and charged Tuesday with murder, manslaughter and gang assault. The NYPD says the suspects are members of the Trinitarios gang and wrongly targeted Guzman-Feliz , who police say had no connection to gang activity. He was in the NYPD’s Explorers program for aspiring young officers. Clark said Wednesday the violence was the result of “intra-gang conflict” between the Los Soros sect, allegedly led by Diego Suero , and the Sunset sect. His death caught national attention after he was dragged out of a Bronx bodega and stabbed with machetes. Police believe they have arrested everyone involved.

HOLLYWOOD HEIGHTS (CBSLA) – If you’re planning to attend Seal’s concert at the Hollywood Bowl Wednesday night, you’ll want to be aware of new neighborhood street closures. Beginning Wednesday, the city of Los Angeles will begin testing street closures around the Hollywood Bowl which are designed to ease traffic congestion in the area. The Los Angeles City Council approved a resolution last month to test the closures on four separate nights this summer, according to a letter posted to residents on the Nextdoor app from Councilman David Ryu. The closures will take place between 5 p.m. and 10 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 5, Aug. 9 and Sept. 10. During those periods, North Highland Avenue will be closed to vehicles from the intersection with Camrose and Milner drives, up to the Hollywood Bowl. The closure will also apply to residents, who will have to access their neighborhoods through Franklin Avenue. “The Hollywood Bowl graciously stepped up to assist in enforcement of these closures,” Ryu wrote. Several other entry points into the neighborhood will be closed to concertgoers and will require resident placards to get through. Getting to the Hollywood Bowl has always posed a challenge due to its location in a residential neighborhood right off the 101 Freeway. “We walk to the concerts all the time, we hear the concerts all the time, it’s a lovely place to live,” resident Chuck Neddermeyer told CBS2. “But the traffic has just made it kind of a nightmare. “ Residents tell CBS2 they feel trapped in their homes. “Since the advent of Ways, and those other sites where you can find the best traffic route, it’s been horrendous,” Ron Scardera said. “We have to plan our exits and entrance routes during the Hollywood Bowl season,” Neddermeyer added. There are several alternatives to driving directly to Hollywood Bowl , which is not advised. There are park and ride options for Metro stops throughout the city which can be purchased beforehand. There is also a shuttle for only $6 roundtrip which runs from four nearby locations and can also be bought before your event.

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) — Noted New York City street artist Bradley Theodore is sharing his latest creation on Instagram. He’s painted a mural honoring globe-trotting chef, author and TV host Anthony Bourdain , who committed suicide last month. The 61-year-old Bourdain was found dead June 8 in an apparent suicide in his hotel room in Kaysersberg, France, an ancient village where he was working on his CNN series “Parts Unknown.” Captioned “In a city full of villains we all need heroes,” the painting lives on the Lower East Side at Delancey and Ludlow streets. Bourdain was an irreverent and sometimes foul-mouthed presence on TV shows starting with “A Cook’s Tour” on the Food Network. “Parts Unknown,” his most recent show, was part travelogue, part history lesson, part homage to exotic foods. Bourdain’s breakthrough as an author came with the 2000 publication of “Kitchen Confidential: Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly.” The book created a sensation by combining frank details of his life and career with behind-the-scenes observations on the culinary industry.
