ISLIP, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) — Two children are recovering Thursday after being hurt in apparent shark attacks off Fire Island. The 12-year-old girl and 13-year-old boy were swimming at two separate beaches Wednesday less than five miles apart. The first incident happened at Sailors Haven Beach where 12-year-old Lola Pollina was swimming in waist deep water with her younger brother. “I kinda thought it was a dream. I didn’t think it was actually happening,” she said. The girl was bitten by what appeared to be a shark. “It was like this tannish, orangey looking body and this small fin on top,” she said. “When I got out, my leg was bloody.” “When I looked back, I see her in the water struggling,” her mother, Barbara Pollina said. Lifeguards bandaged Lola’s leg and she was taken to the hospital. Elizabeth Rogers, a spokeswoman for Fire Island National Seashore, said the girl suffered bite marks “consistent with a large fish.” Then just minutes later, a 13-year-old boy was boogie boarding at a day camp on Atlantique Beach when something latched onto his leg. “I brought him out of the water. He had blood on his leg,” a lifeguard said. “I didn’t think about it till we got out of the water and saw lifeguards wrapping his leg up, blood all over the place,” one camper said. EMTs pulled a tooth from one of the deep gashes around his knee. “A tooth was found in the bite wound, consistent with a large fish,” said Rogers. Long Island officials call these two incidents incredible rare, but say summer is shark mating season and anything is possible. Wednesday evening, Gov. Andrew Cuomo deployed Department of Environmental Conservation officers to investigate the waters where the attacks happened. “I probably will go in the water cause I like the beach and ocean, but I’ll be more careful,” said Lola. Both children are expected to make full recoveries. Long Island officials will re-assess Thursday morning before reopening both beaches to swimmers.

Goldstein Investigation: Sanitation Worker Who Crashed Truck In DUI Still On The Job
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) – Sanitation worker Adrian Corrales – who normally drives a small garbage truck on a day shift – was charged with DUI after crashing a truck on the freeway at 3 a.m. City officials say his normal hours are 6 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. When CBS2’s David Goldstein asked if he had permission to take the truck, Corrales wouldn’t answer. Taxpayers will have to foot the bill for the crash – about $28,000. A Goldstein investigation last year found some employees are driving rentals for their own use – like Francisco Pena, who officials say no longer works for the city. In Corrales’ case, the accident happened on the 5 Freeway in April when he allegedly flipped the truck and slammed into safety barrels on the side of the road. Court records show he had a BAC above .15 percent, almost twice the legal limit. Corrales is in court next month to enter a plea. But it’s not his first DUI: he was also charged with driving under the influence of alcohol within 10 years of another DUI offense, in 2012 before he worked for the city. The latest one occurred three months ago, but Goldstein reports Corrales was spotted last week wearing his city sanitation uniform. “How is it that you’re still working in sanitation?” Goldstein asked him. When he wouldn’t answer any questions, Goldstein tried a sanitation official. Sanitation CFO Lisa Mowery confirmed he’s still driving trucks, but wouldn’t say whether he had permission to borrow the now-destroyed truck overnight. Mowery did confirm the department is looking into the matter. As for Corrales’ history of DUIs? “Our employees have due process,” said Mowery. But political watchdog Jack Humpreville says Corrales continuing to work could lead to a lawsuit if he gets in another crash – one that could cost the city and taxpayers millions of dollars. “He oughta be fired, period, end of sentence,” said Humphreville. “All you need to do is have some guy drive the city trucks when he’s schonked and getting into an accident and really hurting somebody, and you know that’s gonna be a big ticket.”

Police In Yucaipa Investigate If 16-Year-Old Gun Shot ‘Victim’ Is Actually Robbery Suspect
YUCAIPA (CBSLA) — Police in Yucaipa are investigating whether a 16-year-old gunshot victim might be a robbery suspect. The 16-year-old was dropped off behind a 7-Eleven with a gunshot wound to the stomach on Saturday. Police said the teen was dropped at the location by a man and a woman who then took off in a Ford Mustang. KCAL9’s Tina Patel spoke to Tiffany Preuschoff who lives about a mile away. She said the three people in question fit the descriptions of a trio who had broken into her home a week prior. “My husband came home from work, he’d been there at 12 and came home at 4:30, and he noticed our back sliding door had been smashed through,” Preuschoff said. Her neighbors got surveillance video of the three knocking on her door and then jumping a fence into her backyard. Police now believe that 16-year-old made a home invasion attempt on a neighboring street and was shot by that homeowner as he tried to enter through a back window. In my head, it’s like 99 percent probability that these are related incidents.” Preuschoff said, “the car is different, it was not the Mustang that we saw in front of our house. but it’s a block away. very similar.” Preuschoff said she does not know the 69-year-old neighbor who fired on the burglary suspects but understands why he did it. “If it was the right of the property owner to do that, then I’m sorry, but you broke in,” she says. Police said when the homeowner reported the burglary he neglected to say he opened fire. It is possible the DA could file criminal charges against him. Preuschoff does not want to second-guess her neighbor. “I’m not a gun owner,” she says, “I don’t really know the gun laws and whether you needed to report them. I’m sure with all the outrage, he probably should have said something.” But what she really wants is for the other suspects involved to be caught. “And hopefully,” she said, “that 16-year-old will rat out his friends. It’s sad.” No arrests have been made. The 16-year-old, who lives in Desert Hot Springs, remains in the hospital in stable condition.

#ITookARisk: ‘Top Chef’ Alum Katsuji Tanabe Lets Patrons Know Their Food Was Cooked By Immigrants
WHITTIER (CBSLA) — As the debate about immigration into the United States rages, one Southland chef is lending his voice to those who have come into this country for a better life, just as he did. Katsuji Tanabe is best known for his stint on Bravo’s cooking competition “Top Chef.” He now runs six acclaimed restaurants across the country, including the Mexican-Jewish fusion eatery MexiKosher. At The Nixon Chops and Whiskey in Whittier, he’s using his name to shout out his immigrant staff on the upscale steak house’s receipts. At the bottom of each one, it says, “Immigrants cooked your food and served you today,” ending the message with the hashtag #ITookARisk. “This isn’t about politics; I don’t know anything about politics,” the chef told CBS2 News Wednesday. “Tacos, I’m all over it, but it’s a conversation.” Tanabe, the son of a Japanese father and a Mexican mother, was born and raised in Mexico. “Being an immigrant — I don’t think it’s a bad thing,” said Tanabe, who added he’s not afraid of any backlash his stance could generate. “I came to this country with nothing. I have, now, everything.” “It’s not about being upset, it’s not about being angry, it’s about making a change and [making] people think, ‘You know what? We’re better than this,’” Tanabe said. Patrons at Nixon Wednesday seemed to agree with the sentiment. “I think that’s what the great thing about America is, we are all immigrants except the Native Americans who were originally here, and I think that’s beautiful,” said diner Christina Thai. Tanabe hopes his gesture will resonate as the debate over immigration continues. “Face-to-face makes a huge difference. When you are on social media and you are talking to other people, you feel protected,” said Tanabe. “But in life, it’s a whole different story.”

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) — The LAPD on Wednesday released body cam video of a deadly officer-involved shooting in Pacoima this past May. KCAL9’s Peter Daut reports the LAPD is still investigating the incident as witnesses come forward and toxicology tests are completed. They released footage leading up to the moments just before the deadly confrontation. They said they had no choice but to pull the trigger given the dangerous and unpredictable movements of the suspect. The footage was provided and edited by the LAPD. At the start, you see several officers responding to a call about a reported stabbing at a Pacoima home on May 30. You hear the sergeant placing officers and planning to approach the suspect in an effort to take him into custody. You then hear officers telling 29-year-old Bryan Rodriguez they are going to arrest him. Officers warn Rodriguez they will use a taser or bean-bag shotgun but he does not respond. “I’m giving you one more opportunity. Come out here with your hands up,” says one officer. Officers keep their distance — they are still concerned Rodriguez might be armed with a knife. After several more minutes trying to communicate with him, officers move towards him. They use a taser to take him down. The taser has no effect on Rodriguez. The officers warn him repeatedly to comply. They tell him he will be tased again if he doesn’t listen. They fire the taser and he again refuses to follow their orders. Officers then fire several non-lethal bean bag rounds at him. Again, they have very little effect on him. Rodriguez grabs a potted plant and throws it at officers striking some of them in the head. The suspect than gets on the roof of the home. Officers, meanwhile, rescue the person injured inside. Moments later, officers say they saw Rodriguez grab a pickax. Rodriguez throws several bricks at officers. Police then deploy a 40-millimeter launcher that shoots a foam projectile that does not penetrate the skin. Rodriguez continues to wield the pickax. After several minutes, Rodriguez goes inside the home and officers lose sight of him. Officers say he later emerges with the pickax. They tell him to drop it but instead they say he moved towards them with the ax and raised it above his head. That’s when officers open fire. Officers moved in and removed the ax from the scene. Police immediately call for an ambulance but Rodriguez dies at the scene. The stabbing victim was taken to a hospital where he was treated and later released. Officers recovered Rodriguez’s knife from the crime scene. Authorities said Rodriguez had a long criminal history. The Civilian Board of Police Commissioner’s will also evaluate the evidence to determine if the officer-involved shooting met proper standards.
