LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) – Sanitation worker Adrian Corrales – who normally drives a small garbage truck on a day shift – was charged with DUI after crashing a truck on the freeway at 3 a.m. City officials say his normal hours are 6 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. When CBS2’s David Goldstein asked if he had permission to take the truck, Corrales wouldn’t answer. Taxpayers will have to foot the bill for the crash – about $28,000. A Goldstein investigation last year found some employees are driving rentals for their own use – like Francisco Pena, who officials say no longer works for the city. In Corrales’ case, the accident happened on the 5 Freeway in April when he allegedly flipped the truck and slammed into safety barrels on the side of the road. Court records show he had a BAC above .15 percent, almost twice the legal limit. Corrales is in court next month to enter a plea. But it’s not his first DUI: he was also charged with driving under the influence of alcohol within 10 years of another DUI offense, in 2012 before he worked for the city. The latest one occurred three months ago, but Goldstein reports Corrales was spotted last week wearing his city sanitation uniform. “How is it that you’re still working in sanitation?” Goldstein asked him. When he wouldn’t answer any questions, Goldstein tried a sanitation official. Sanitation CFO Lisa Mowery confirmed he’s still driving trucks, but wouldn’t say whether he had permission to borrow the now-destroyed truck overnight. Mowery did confirm the department is looking into the matter. As for Corrales’ history of DUIs? “Our employees have due process,” said Mowery. But political watchdog Jack Humpreville says Corrales continuing to work could lead to a lawsuit if he gets in another crash – one that could cost the city and taxpayers millions of dollars. “He oughta be fired, period, end of sentence,” said Humphreville. “All you need to do is have some guy drive the city trucks when he’s schonked and getting into an accident and really hurting somebody, and you know that’s gonna be a big ticket.”

Goldstein Investigation: Sanitation Worker Who Crashed Truck In DUI Still On The Job
YUCAIPA (CBSLA) — Police in Yucaipa are investigating whether a 16-year-old gunshot victim might be a robbery suspect. The 16-year-old was dropped off behind a 7-Eleven with a gunshot wound to the stomach on Saturday. Police said the teen was dropped at the location by a man and a woman who then took off in a Ford Mustang. KCAL9’s Tina Patel spoke to Tiffany Preuschoff who lives about a mile away. She said the three people in question fit the descriptions of a trio who had broken into her home a week prior. “My husband came home from work, he’d been there at 12 and came home at 4:30, and he noticed our back sliding door had been smashed through,” Preuschoff said. Her neighbors got surveillance video of the three knocking on her door and then jumping a fence into her backyard. Police now believe that 16-year-old made a home invasion attempt on a neighboring street and was shot by that homeowner as he tried to enter through a back window. In my head, it’s like 99 percent probability that these are related incidents.” Preuschoff said, “the car is different, it was not the Mustang that we saw in front of our house. but it’s a block away. very similar.” Preuschoff said she does not know the 69-year-old neighbor who fired on the burglary suspects but understands why he did it. “If it was the right of the property owner to do that, then I’m sorry, but you broke in,” she says. Police said when the homeowner reported the burglary he neglected to say he opened fire. It is possible the DA could file criminal charges against him. Preuschoff does not want to second-guess her neighbor. “I’m not a gun owner,” she says, “I don’t really know the gun laws and whether you needed to report them. I’m sure with all the outrage, he probably should have said something.” But what she really wants is for the other suspects involved to be caught. “And hopefully,” she said, “that 16-year-old will rat out his friends. It’s sad.” No arrests have been made. The 16-year-old, who lives in Desert Hot Springs, remains in the hospital in stable condition.

WHITTIER (CBSLA) — As the debate about immigration into the United States rages, one Southland chef is lending his voice to those who have come into this country for a better life, just as he did. Katsuji Tanabe is best known for his stint on Bravo’s cooking competition “Top Chef.” He now runs six acclaimed restaurants across the country, including the Mexican-Jewish fusion eatery MexiKosher. At The Nixon Chops and Whiskey in Whittier, he’s using his name to shout out his immigrant staff on the upscale steak house’s receipts. At the bottom of each one, it says, “Immigrants cooked your food and served you today,” ending the message with the hashtag #ITookARisk. “This isn’t about politics; I don’t know anything about politics,” the chef told CBS2 News Wednesday. “Tacos, I’m all over it, but it’s a conversation.” Tanabe, the son of a Japanese father and a Mexican mother, was born and raised in Mexico. “Being an immigrant — I don’t think it’s a bad thing,” said Tanabe, who added he’s not afraid of any backlash his stance could generate. “I came to this country with nothing. I have, now, everything.” “It’s not about being upset, it’s not about being angry, it’s about making a change and [making] people think, ‘You know what? We’re better than this,’” Tanabe said. Patrons at Nixon Wednesday seemed to agree with the sentiment. “I think that’s what the great thing about America is, we are all immigrants except the Native Americans who were originally here, and I think that’s beautiful,” said diner Christina Thai. Tanabe hopes his gesture will resonate as the debate over immigration continues. “Face-to-face makes a huge difference. When you are on social media and you are talking to other people, you feel protected,” said Tanabe. “But in life, it’s a whole different story.”

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) — The LAPD on Wednesday released body cam video of a deadly officer-involved shooting in Pacoima this past May. KCAL9’s Peter Daut reports the LAPD is still investigating the incident as witnesses come forward and toxicology tests are completed. They released footage leading up to the moments just before the deadly confrontation. They said they had no choice but to pull the trigger given the dangerous and unpredictable movements of the suspect. The footage was provided and edited by the LAPD. At the start, you see several officers responding to a call about a reported stabbing at a Pacoima home on May 30. You hear the sergeant placing officers and planning to approach the suspect in an effort to take him into custody. You then hear officers telling 29-year-old Bryan Rodriguez they are going to arrest him. Officers warn Rodriguez they will use a taser or bean-bag shotgun but he does not respond. “I’m giving you one more opportunity. Come out here with your hands up,” says one officer. Officers keep their distance — they are still concerned Rodriguez might be armed with a knife. After several more minutes trying to communicate with him, officers move towards him. They use a taser to take him down. The taser has no effect on Rodriguez. The officers warn him repeatedly to comply. They tell him he will be tased again if he doesn’t listen. They fire the taser and he again refuses to follow their orders. Officers then fire several non-lethal bean bag rounds at him. Again, they have very little effect on him. Rodriguez grabs a potted plant and throws it at officers striking some of them in the head. The suspect than gets on the roof of the home. Officers, meanwhile, rescue the person injured inside. Moments later, officers say they saw Rodriguez grab a pickax. Rodriguez throws several bricks at officers. Police then deploy a 40-millimeter launcher that shoots a foam projectile that does not penetrate the skin. Rodriguez continues to wield the pickax. After several minutes, Rodriguez goes inside the home and officers lose sight of him. Officers say he later emerges with the pickax. They tell him to drop it but instead they say he moved towards them with the ax and raised it above his head. That’s when officers open fire. Officers moved in and removed the ax from the scene. Police immediately call for an ambulance but Rodriguez dies at the scene. The stabbing victim was taken to a hospital where he was treated and later released. Officers recovered Rodriguez’s knife from the crime scene. Authorities said Rodriguez had a long criminal history. The Civilian Board of Police Commissioner’s will also evaluate the evidence to determine if the officer-involved shooting met proper standards.

WASHINGTON (CBS NEWS) — President Trump again expressed confidence in U.S. intelligence agencies and their assessment of Russian interference Wednesday, but declined to say whether he believes Vladimir Putin was lying when he denied Russia was behind the meddling effort. Mr. Trump made the comments in an interview with “CBS Evening News” anchor Jeff Glor at the White House. Mr. Trump said he believes it’s “true” Russia meddled in the 2016 election and said he directly warned Putin against interfering in U.S. elections during their one-on-one meeting in Helsinki, Finland, on Monday. Asked what he said to Putin, Mr. Trump responded, “Very strong on the fact that we can’t have meddling, we can’t have any of that … I let him know that we can’t have this, we’re not going to have it, and that’s the way it’s going to be.” Mr. Trump also expressed confidence in Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats, whose dire warnings about U.S. hacking vulnerabilities he had questioned in a previous interview. “Well, I accept. I mean, he’s an expert,” Mr. Trump said Wednesday. “This is what he does. He’s been doing a very good job. I have tremendous faith in Dan Coats, and if he says that, I would accept that. I will tell you though, it better not be. It better not be.” Mr. Trump said he also accepts Coats’ assessment that the threat from Russia is ongoing. But he declined to say whether his faith in the intelligence community leads him to the conclusion that Putin’s denials are untrue. “So if you believe U.S. intelligence agencies, is Putin lying to you?” Glor asked. “I don’t want to get into whether or not he’s lying,” Mr. Trump said. “I can only say that I do have confidence in our intelligence agencies as currently constituted. I think that Dan Coats is excellent. I think that [CIA Director] Gina [Haspel] is excellent. I think we have excellent people in the agencies, and when they tell me something, it means a lot.” Mr. Trump has been on the defensive for the past two days after failing to defend the intelligence community during a press conference with Putin in Helsinki. Standing beside the Russian leader, Mr. Trump seemed to lend credence to Putin’s insistence that his government was not involved in the effort to influence the 2016 campaign. In the face of withering backlash among even those in his own party, Mr. Trump on Tuesday said he misspoke, attempting to clarify that he believed the intelligence community. On Wednesday, the president said he now has confidence in intelligence agencies, but blasted former leaders like former DNI James Clapper and former CIA Directors John Brennan and Michael Hayden. All three have been vociferous critics of the president — after the president’s press conference in Helsinki, Brennan said Mr. Trump’s performance was “nothing short of treasonous.” Mr. Trump called Brennan a “low-life” in Wednesday’s interview, saying that “in the past, it’s been terrible.” Following the airing of the CBS interview, Clapper responded to Mr. Trump’s comments on CNN. “I think I’m speaking for John Brennan and Mike Hayden, it’s almost a badge of honor, when the President sees fit to go after individual private citizens,” said Clapper. “And I think I can speak as well for all of us to say, and I include Jim Comey in this, the only reason we’ve spoken out about all this is our genuine concerns about this President and this Presidency and its assaulting values and institutions and standards of this country which collectively we’ve spent decades defending.” Earlier Wednesday, Mr. Trump sparked confusion about where he stands on whether Russia is continuing to target the U.S., given Coats’ assessment that the threat to America’s digital infrastructure is current. White House press secretary Sarah Sanders told reporters that Mr. Trump’s response to a reporter’s question had been misconstrued. When he said “no,” she said, he was not answering the reporter’s question about whether he thought Russia is still targeting the U.S. “I had a chance to speak with the president after those comments, and the president was — said ‘Thank you very much,’ and was saying ‘No’ to answering questions,” Sanders said, answering a question from CBS News chief White House correspondent Major Garrett. On Tuesday, Mr. Trump said he misspoke when he suggested otherwise in a widely criticized press conference Putin Monday in Helsinki. “I will begin by stating that I have full faith and support for America’s great intelligence agencies, I always have,” Mr. Trump said before a meeting with members of Congress on Tuesday. “And I have felt very strongly that, while Russia’s actions had no impact at all on the outcome of the election, let me be totally clear in saying that, and I have said this many times, I accept our intelligence community’s conclusion that Russia’s meddling in the 2016 election took place. It could be other people, also. There are lots of people out there.” © 2018 CBS Interactive Inc. All Rights Reserved.

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — It’s peak rental season in New York City, but lots of living options comes with lots of problems especially if you don’t do your homework. Sabin Wizman thought her one bedroom with a view of the East River and modern finishing was a steal. With assurances from her realtor she negotiated the building down to $4,000 a month. When she moved in in May, she ran into a rude awakening. “As you open your windows you have East Side Heliport that runs 12 hours a day from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., at times up to four helicopters,” Wizman said. “I was told by the management here that they’re not required to let me know that there’s a helipad.” She says the building told her it was her job to investigate before hand, and if she wanted to get out she’d have to pay for two months after she moved out. Real estate attorney Adam Leitman Bailey says the leasing company is well within their rights. “Landlords aren’t required to tell you anything,” he told CBS2. “I recommend to clients before signing lease that they stand in front of the door for a half-hour, greeting other tenants and asking them how they like the building.” Environment is only one of the many things to consider, and Leitman Bailey says legally it’s on you to do the homework. By law, a building does have to disclose whether there were bed bugs in the apartment but only in the last year. The Department of Housing Preservation and Development has a free database that discloses complaints and violations like leaks, bed bugs, and heating problems. The Department of Buildings has a database that lets you know about construction planned in the area and elevator issues. “Go during work hours, after work hours, morning, evening, and the weekends,” real estate broker Anthony Lolli said. “You really want to cover the full gamut.” “There’s situations where people move into buildings they don’t know, there’s a homeless shelter down the block, and maybe a lot of people coming in and out,” real estate broker Carlos Angelucci said. Otherwise, you could be out of luck. Experts say it’s currently a renter’s market, so take time before you sign. There’s always another apartment around the corner.

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — The Los Angeles Angels publicly praised Mike Trout “for prioritizing his personal values over commercial self-promotion” a day after baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred said the All-Star outfielder would be an even bigger star if he would spend more time marketing himself. The team released a statement Wednesday congratulating Trout on his performance in the All-Star Game in Washington then extolled the time he spends visiting hospitals, schools and charities and the quality time he spends with family. “We applaud him for prioritizing his personal values over commercial self-promotion,” the statement said. “That is rare in today’s society and stands out as much as his extraordinary talent.” A day earlier, Manfred said MLB was interested in having players more engaged and in helping players develop their individual brands. Manfred said Trout chooses not to spend his down time marketing. “Mike’s a great, great player and a really nice person, but he’s made certain decisions about what he wants to do and what he doesn’t want to do, and how he wants to spend his free time and how he doesn’t want to spend his free time,” Manfred said. “That’s up to him. If he wants to engage and be more active in that area, I think we could help him make his brand really, really big. But he has to make a decision that he’s prepared to engage in that area. It takes time and effort.” At 26, Trout is a two-time AL MVP and a seven-time All-Star. He homered off Mets ace Jacob deGrom on Tuesday night in an 8-6 win in 10 innings. Asked after the game about Manfred’s comments, Trout said: “I keep telling you guys, I do as much as I can. But it’s a long baseball season. I got to pick and choose when I want to do things and go from there.” Manfred’s remarks struck a sour note with fans, some of whom took to social media to say Trout was a great role model who should be left to live his life as he pleases. The Angels apparently concur. “His brand is built upon generously spending his time engaging with fans, both at home and on the road, while remaining a remarkable baseball player and teammate,” the team said. Angels Praise Mike Trout For ‘Prioritizing Personal Values’
(CNN) — Months after a Texas school district broke ground on a new technical center, archaeologists there made a surprising discovery : the long-buried remains of 95 people. The first remains were discovered in February in Sugar Land, a suburb southwest of Houston. And now officials have learned who these people probably were — freed black people forced to work in convict labor camps. For over a century, these graves were underground and untouched. But the finding that they likely held the remains of slaves, which researchers announced Monday, highlights an era that’s largely forgotten in history — a time when slavery was illegal, but many blacks were essentially still enslaved. The Sugar Land property is owned by the Fort Bend Independent School District, which is building its new technical school on the land. “It’s a remarkable opportunity for our community and our school district to learn much more about the history of our local region,” Superintendent Charles Dupre said in a statement. The site’s archaeological project manager agrees. “It’s a rare opportunity,” Reign Clark of Goshawk Environmental Consulting told CNN. “We’ll be telling the story of what it was like to live here, work here, and, in some cases, die here.” How they were found It started with a hunch. Reginald Moore took an interest in historical cemeteries after working as a Texas state prison guard in the 1980s. He no longer works at the prison, but he’s still a community activist. One of his main focuses: getting people to recognize the abuses of the Sugar Land convict-leasing system, in which prison inmates were forced into labor. “I felt like I had the duty to be an advocate for them and to speak from the grave for these people,” Moore told CNN. Moore is the caretaker of another cemetery in Fort Bend County: the Imperial Farm Cemetery , which is nestled behind a shopping center off the highway. Near the cemetery is the home of the school district’s new James Reese Career and Technical Center. So when construction on the Sugar Land school’s center started last fall, Moore told officials that other cemeteries might be nearby. “He has documented and provided a lot of information about the history of that cemetery. He has a lot of ideas where the burials could’ve been,” said Chris Florance of the Texas Historical Commission, which has played an advisory role in the project. What they found The bodies were each buried in individual wooden caskets. Of those analyzed so far, all but one are men. Researchers say they could have been as young as 14 and as old as 70. They were probably buried between 1878 and 1910, Clark said. Despite the passage of time, researchers can tell that the workers were malnourished or sick and faced huge physical stress when they were alive. Clark said there’s lots of evidence that they were doing very heavy labor that, for some, began at a young age. “We can tell from the state of the bone and muscle attachment features that these were heavily built individuals. Some bones were misshapen by the sheer musculature and labor,” Clark told CNN. It’s no surprise in Texas Moore wasn’t the only one who wasn’t shocked at the discovery. Florance said his commission took a role in the project knowing a find like this could happen. “It’s not uncommon in Texas,” he told CNN. What was shocking, though, was how hard the graves were to find. The commission had done assessments before construction began, Florance said, but the land was so altered over the years that it was hard to know anything would be there. “One of the biggest problems with old cemeteries is that the markers might have gone away. There’s no surface evidence,” he said. The are 177 cemeteries in Fort Bend County, but there could be as many as 50,000 cemeteries across the state. Only 1,706 have a historic Texas cemetery designation . The ‘Hellhole on the Brazos’ President Lincoln’s 1860 Emancipation Proclamation said all slaves were free. That doesn’t mean forced labor didn’t continue. After the Civil War ended in 1865 and slaves were outlawed, the Texas economy dropped into a deep depression . Businesses needed a new form of cheap labor. So they resorted to prisons. The convict-leasing system was essentially slavery all over again. Prisoners were taken from state prisons and leased to private businesspeople who worked the laborers as hard as they could for the cheapest price. And the less food, water and shelter these workers got, the less they cost. “One 14-year-old was 6 feet tall,” Clark told CNN. “This population was hand-selected.” Sugar Land’s economy had thrived on sugar cane plantations , which largely relied on slave labor. So two Confederate veterans, Edward Cunningham and Littleberry Ellis, signed a contract with the state in 1878 to lease the state’s prison population. Conditions were so bad that the city got itself a nickname: “Hellhole on the Brazos.” “It had the worst reputation of all the prison farms in Texas,” sociologist Richard Vogel told CNN affiliate KTRK. What happens next Digging up and analyzing all 95 graves takes serious time — likely more than nine months’ worth of work. Each unburial takes up to two days, plus up to eight hours of cleaning and up to 15 hours for analysis, the school district said. So far, they’ve dug up 50 graves and analyzed more than 22, Clark said. Once they’re dug up, a team of forensic archaeologists will look for more information on the corpses, such as their medical conditions and how they died. After that, the school district will work with the state’s historical commission to figure out where to rebury them. Moore wants to get a memorial for the group as a form of restitution. “I’m speaking for those who didn’t have a voice, then and now,” he told CNN. “I felt like I was called to set them free.” — Jessica Campisi and Brandon Griggs The-CNN-Wire ( & © 2018 Cable News Network, Inc., a Time Warner Company. Nearly 100 Bodies Found At A Texas Construction Site Were Probably Black People Forced Into Labor — After Slavery Ended
WASHINGTON (AP) — Major League Baseball said Wednesday that Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Josh Hader will be required to go through sensitivity training after years-old racist and homophobic tweets of his resurfaced during the All-Star Game. MLB announced the commissioner’s office would require Hader to participate in diversity and inclusion initiatives in addition to the sensitivity training. In a statement, Brewers general manager David Stearns said the team will continue to work through the issue with Hader. Several of Hader’s tweets from 2011 and 2012 came to light Tuesday night while Hader was pitching in the All-Star Game. Hader learned of the situation when he left the game. He apologized and took responsibility for the tweets, saying they did not reflect his values or the person he is now. “During last night’s game we became aware of Mr. Hader’s unacceptable social media comments in years past and have since been in communication with the Brewers regarding our shared concerns,” MLB said in a statement. “After the game, Mr. Hader took the necessary step of expressing remorse for his highly offensive and hurtful language, which fails to represent the values of our game and our expectations for all those who are a part of it.” The 24-year-old Hader said he did not “vividly” remember the tweets. “Being 17 years old, you make stupid decisions and mistakes,” Hader said Tuesday night. “I was in high school. We’re still learning who we are in high school. You live and you learn. This mistake won’t happen again.” Stearns said the Brewers were in contact with Hader, who is “fully aware of the severity of the situation related to his social media comments, regardless of the timeline of his posts.” “His comments are inexcusable, and he is taking full responsibility for the consequences of his actions,” Stearns said. “In no way do these sentiments reflect the views of the Brewers organization or our community.” Stearns said those who have come to know Hader believe the sentiments in the tweets do not represent his beliefs, calling him a good teammate and contributor to the Brewers in every way. Hader has a 1.50 ERA in 31 appearances and made the All-Star Game in just his second major league season. Hader spoke with Brewers teammate Lorenzo Cain after the All-Star Game. Cainl, who is black, said he expects the team to accept Hader’s present-day statements and move on. “At the end of the day, you’ve got to give people a second chance,” Cain said. “You’ve got to forgive people. For me, it’s over and done with. He said it. It got out there. I’m moving on from it.” On Twitter Wednesday, Brewers All-Star Jesus Aguilar expressed his support for Hader in a couple of posts. First of all I want to show my support to my friend and teammate, Josh Hader. He made a mistake 7 years ago. He admitted, he apologized and most important: He learned from it. — Jesus Aguilar (@JAguilarMKE) July 18, 2018 Aguilar tweeted. “Regarding accusations of racism: I’m Venezuelan and with the skin color that I have, can tell you that it is a lie. Obviously he’s not racist. He’s a great player and a better person. Great teammate.” Hader, who grew up in Millersville, Maryland, outside the state capital of Annapolis, apologized when he spoke to reporters after the All-Star Game. “There’s no excuse for what was said,” Hader said. “I’m deeply sorry for what I’ve said and what’s been going on.” In the tweets, Hader — who trademarked “Haderade” for what was then his Twitter handle — disparaged blacks and gays, embraced white supremacy, used the N-word multiple times and said several rude things about women over an eight-month period. MLB takes diversity and inclusion very seriously. The game hired former player Billy Bean in 2014 as an Ambassador for Inclusion. Bean came out as gay after he retired from baseball in 1995. NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — NYPD Commissioner James O’Neill revealed on Wednesday he’s used the department’s counter-terrorism plane three or four times to travel. The commissioner says he most recently used the $4 million Cessna a week and a half ago to attend a state trooper’s funeral upstate. O’Neill’s admission comes two weeks after CBS2’s Marcia Kramer revealed Mayor Bill de Blasio used the plane to travel to and from his vacation in Canada. The plane usually flies over New York Harbor checking for suspicious activity.

2 children apparent victims of shark attack off Fire Island in New York
TOWN OF ISLIP, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) – Two children were recovering Wednesday night after officials say they were bitten by a shark off Fire Island. The 13-year-old boy was bitten in the water around noon at Atlantique Beach, while the 12-year-old Lola Pollina was bitten around the same time at Sailor Haven Beach. She says the water was so cold she didn’t feel anything, but there’s little doubt the creature that chomped on her leg was a shark. “It was a ten-inch orangey body and then there was a fin and then I got out, and my leg was bloody,” Lola said. “We went to the lifeguards, we ran up to them and they kind of bandaged it.” Lola was in waist-deep water roughly 10-feet off the shore when it happened. Her mother snapped photos and took to social media to share them. “I saw a lot of thrashing and her trying to get to me,” mom Barbara Pollina said. Lola wasn’t alone, with nearly identical bandaging slapped on the 13-year-old victim who had been boogie boarding just four and a half miles away. He didn’t just have bite marks on his leg; a shark tooth managed to embed into his skin. Both victims’ injuries were described as non-life-threatening The boy was taken to Southside Hospital. The girl was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center. Marine life experts say cleaner ocean waters in New York are making conditions ripe for the sea life sharks like to eat, attracting them to areas closer to the shoreline. On Wednesday evening, Governor Andrew Cuomo deployed environmental conservation officers to investigate the waters off Fire Island. Lola says the ordeal won’t stop her from going in the water, but she’ll make sure to be more careful next time.
