NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – Kenny Bazile was convicted Thursday of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon and second-degree manslaughter in connection with the 2015 killing of Carey Gabay , a former aide to Gov. Andrew Cuomo. Gabay was hit in the head by a stray bullet on a Brooklyn street in 2015. Prosecutors say a turf war between two gangs sparked the shooting, which happened hours before the annual West Indian Day parade. A block in Clinton Hill, Brooklyn where Gabay once lived has been renamed in his honor . Five men faced charges in the killing . Gabay was a Harvard-educated lawyer who served as first deputy general counsel at the Empire State Development Corp. “Carey was an inspiring public servant whose life was cut short by senseless gun violence. I commend the men and women of law enforcement for their relentless pursuit of justice and thank the prosecutors for their work in honoring Carey’s legacy,” Cuomo said in a statement. “Nothing can bring Carey back to his wife Trenelle, his family and all those who loved him, but I hope this guilty verdict gives them some comfort that justice has been served. Carey will be forever missed.”

Carey Gabay Killer Found Guilty Of Manslaughter
By Chuck Carroll The times are a changin’ for Mike “The Miz” Mizanin. He blossomed from a brash young reality television star to one of WWE’s hottest talents. He’s a Hollywood A-lister in the ring and one of the faces driving the company outside of it. He’s a former WWE Champion, an eight-time Intercontinental Champion, and a six-time tag team-champion. He’s also snagged the leading role in a number of movies, including succeeding John Cena as the star of The Marine franchise. But now the ultra-confident Ohio native has a new role — father. His wife, Maryse Ouellet, is a leading lady in her own right and no stranger to the ring as a former WWE Divas Champion. The real-life couple tangled with Cena and Nikki Bella at WrestleMania 33 and remained white hot as the company’s top villains, until they made a surprise announcement that they were expecting their first child. The pregnancy forced Maryse to come off the road, but she continues to be one of the most popular women in WWE, despite a long absence to give birth to their daughter, Monroe. Although we haven’t seen her on Raw or SmackDown in some time, she isn’t straying too far from WWE cameras. Following the success of Total Divas and the spinoff Total Bellas , the Mizanins are now getting their own reality show Miz & Mrs. For Mr. Mizanin, it’s a return to the medium that first made him famous. And for Mrs. Mizanin, it’s a chance to show her learning the ropes of motherhood. Some may call them an odd couple given her French-Canadian roots and his All-American over-the-top, larger-than-life personality. But they mesh perfectly together, and their synergy is impossible to miss. It helps when you’re working side-by-side with your best friend. There is never a lack of chemistry. But will we ever see that chemistry in the ring again? That’s the million-dollar question. Whether or not Maryse ever returns to the squared circle is very much up the air. She’s just not sure right now. Her focus is on being a mother, something that’s not conducive to an extensive travel schedule that can require her being away from home for weeks at a time. I had an opportunity to catch up with the couple in between diaper changes and nap times. I learned a lot from them. A lot. Specifically, I was taken to school about a particular type of photo shoot that not even Miz knew about until it was too late. Now, a family friend has seen way more than she bargained for, courtesy of a Laurel and Hardy type of miscommunication. After 10 minutes of laughs, the conversation turned to Maryse’s future and Miz’s feud with Daniel Bryan. > > MORE: From the world of Pro Wrestling Maryse and The Miz (Photo Credit: WWE) What is this whole debacle about a photo shoot when Maryse was pregnant? Miz: Okay. Say your wife comes to you, and you’re always trying to make them happy, especially when they’re pregnant. You just want to make sure that they’re all good. She goes to me, “We’re doing a photo shoot.” I’m like, “Okay. Great.” Me, I’m thinking, “I’m gonna have a suit. I’m gonna have all this nice sort of thing.” When she tells me, “Hey, it’s an implied nude photo shoot”, and all I hear is nude photo shoot, guess what? I’m gonna do a nude photo shoot for my wife. I’m gonna do that for her because I just want to make her happy. I guess I got it wrong, because implied nude means, “Hey, you can wear underwear” or you can do whatever, so I got that wrong. Maryse, heading into that day, how long had you known about an implied nude photo shoot? Because I don’t think that a lot of people know about that. Maryse: Really? I’m French Canadian, so you would think, right? I’ve done photo shoots my entire life [it] seems like, so implied … Implied, come on. It’s like the Demi Moore photo shoots from Vanity Fair . Everyone knows that. She was covering herself. Miz: So here’s kind of what happened. She goes to me, “Hey, we’re doing a photo shoot.” She did not say implied nude, did not say anything like that, so I was like, “Okay. We’re doing a photo shoot. That’s fine. No problem. Great. Let’s do it.” The day of, my plane was late, of course, ’cause it always is, and she had to bring all the stuff. She brought all my outfits, everything. Then, I guess her and Amanda [Maryse’s best friend], who is the photographer she always uses, started talking about what they wanted to do. I guess Amanda came up with the idea of doing an implied nude photo shoot. I don’t even know what that is, to be honest. Maryse: I think it’s because we’ve been working together for so long — me and Amanda — that we know that lingo. But I assumed that you knew. And by the way, I did say, when we were in Brooklyn, that we doing an implied nude photo shoot. You know how husbands don’t listen sometimes, they listen to their wife, but… Miz: You never said implied nude photo shoot, because I don’t know what that is, and I would’ve asked what that is. So, I get there. When I get in the car and I start asking her what are we doing, [she said] “Listen, you’re gonna be wearing a suit. I’m gonna be in a dress. Another one we’re gonna do is an implied nude photo shoot.” So I went there and I tried to do what my wife wanted me to do. I feel the need to stand up for my fellow man here. There’s no other way to possibly interpret that. Maryse: Oh, my God. You gotta be kidding me right now. Miz: Thank you! Maryse: No. No, no, no. Every woman would tell you, “No, no, no. It’s implied .” How the heck do you walk onto a set completely fully naked? Miz: Because I wanted to make everyone feel comfortable. Maryse: My best friend saw everything! Miz: Everything. I was out there. Changing gears… I want to ask you about parenthood. Who’s the better diaper changer? Miz: 100 percent me. Maryse: Oh, my God. Miz: No? Yesterday we go to the doctors, right? And Monroe peed through her diaper, which is the diaper that Maryse put on, not the one I put on. She’s never leaked in a diaper that I have put on. Maryse: Okay, Mike. Yes, you are the best diaper changer in the world. It’s like I have to raise my daughter and I have a five-year-old that’s actually 37, my husband. Maryse and The Miz (Photo Credit: Thomas Samson/AFP/Getty Images) Maryse, how has the transition been for you to motherhood and coming off of the road? You had a ton of momentum there, and then it seems like, “Wow! Oh, my goodness. She’s pregnant.” So how has that transition been for you, and when do you think we might see you back in the ring? I love being on the road, because I get to do what I love, but I get to be with my husband at all times. This might sound cheesy, but we get along, and we have a great dynamic together. I really love being on the road with him. But right now, I just wanna be with Monroe at all times. I just wanna spend as much time as possible with her and just take it in. I’ve been out of WWE for injuries, and I’ve taken time off before, but this is a different time. This is completely different, and I just wanna be there and take it one day at a time, which is weird because I’m such a “go, go, go” type of person. I have to be working or doing something at all times. But for the first time in my life, I really enjoy being home and taking care of her. Every day, she wakes up, and I look at her, and it’s a new day. It’s crazy. Miz: It’s funny. I leave, and I’m gone. I just got back from Japan. The trip ended up being 13 days. We were stranded there for three days. But 13 days with a three-month old, she changes. She gains weight and she’s just getting bigger and bigger. It’s incredible to witness. But thank God for FaceTime, because I don’t know what I would do. I would imagine the road now is completely different for you. You’re a grown man now. You’ve got the child. You’ve got the ultimate responsibility. I don’t think that there’s a whole lot of time to cut up and carry on anymore. Miz: No. You know? I don’t even think about that anymore. I’m a morning person now. I woke up today at like six o’clock in the morning, and I was sitting there having a coffee and just watching her, just staring at her. I feel like a weirdo just staring at my daughter, but that’s what I love doing. I just enjoy seeing her, playing with her, seeing her do things, and witnessing it and just being there. Maryse: I feel like every day, I sent you about 100 videos and photos of Monroe, and I don’t know if I’ll ever be back on the road or how it would happen or work. I’m just gonna take it easy and enjoy what I’m doing right now, because this is something that has to be enjoyed. We’ll see. Maybe. Never know. For right now, my head is definitely at home with my daughter. Miz, you know how when you’re a kid and your parents will say something and you’ll roll your eyes, and you’ll be like, “I’m never gonna be like that. There’s no way that will ever be me.” Have you seen some of those traits maybe start to creep into yourself a little bit, now that you’re a father yourself? Miz: As much as I hate to say it, yes. I see the things that I would always hate when my dad did them. Then, I realized, actually, before I had Monroe, how much I am like my dad. Then, when Maryse sits there and goes, “You’re being George Mizanin right now.” And I’m like, “Um. No.” She goes, “Yes.” Then, I sit there and think about it, and I go, “Oh, my God. I’m becoming my father.” Maryse, what about you? Maryse: I always said I am not like my mom, and Mike keeps saying that I’m 100% like my mom. Miz: Yes. None of the Ouellet family has any patience. If they say this needs to be done, it needs to be done right now, do it. If it’s not done, then they’ll just annoy you until you do it. Maryse: We’re a little dramatic and impatient. Miz: A little? Maryse: Listen, I’m married with The Miz, so I have to be a little dramatic. I have to be able to handle this whole persona, [this] personality that is my husband. You’ve had some things to say about Daniel Bryan over the last couple of years. Of course, now, he’s a new father himself. So, my question to you is this: Is he ever the kind of guy that you would go to for advice on raising a kid? And would you ever consider raising a vegan child? Miz: A vegan child? No. I’ll allow Monroe to do whatever she wants to do as far as I’m concerned. Obviously, to a degree. If she wants to be a vegan, then I’ll support her being a vegan. If she doesn’t wanna be a vegan, then I’ll support her not being a vegan. You know? It’s up to her. That’s her decision, and I hope that I am able to raise a strong, independent, and powerful woman, kind of like my wife is. As far as Daniel Bryan’s concerned, I applaud the fact that he’s a father. I applaud the fact that he’s raising his daughter the best he can. But when he steps into the ring, that’s a whole other thing. You know what I mean? You can’t diss a guy for being a dad, but you can diss a guy for being a WWE superstar and being condescending and sitting there thinking that he’s better than you. Then, all of the sudden, since he wants me to be on SmackDown Live , he goes to the general manager and gets it done and puts me on SmackDown Live . And then I’m here for the past three months, and he has done nothing, and I mean nothing, since I have been there on SmackDown Live . I am waiting for him, but the fact is, he hasn’t stepped up to me, hasn’t said a word to me, hasn’t really done anything to me. The only thing I’ve done is beat him in a gauntlet match, so as far as I’m concerned, I’ve won. The fact is, I went up to … If you remember talking smack, I think it was three or four years ago, I said everything to Daniel Bryan’s face. I went right up to him. And if you really remember, he started everything. He’s the one that called me a coward, said I had a soft style of working. But then there’s a guy who comes back three years later and says he was fighting for his dreams. But the thing is, when I was up in his face, I was expecting to get hit, but what did he do? He walked away. Instead of fighting for his dreams and fighting for what he believes in, he walked away like a coward. That’s where I stand with everything. The Miz & Mrs. premieres July 24. LOS ANGELES (AP) — More than 140 survivors of sexual abuse by a former team doctor for USA Gymnastics and Michigan State University joined hands on stage to be honored with the Arthur Ashe Award for Courage at the ESPYs. The women who spoke out against the abuse by Larry Nassar stood together Wednesday night in a powerful and solemn closing to the show highlighting the past year’s top athletes and moments in sports. (Photo by Kevork Djansezian/Getty Images) Gymnast Aly Raisman, softball player Tiffany Thomas Lopez and gymnast Sarah Klein, who said she was Nassar’s first victim 30 years ago, took turns speaking. Klein chided the U.S. Olympic Committee, USA Gymnastics and Michigan State for placing “money and medals above the safety of child athletes.” Olympic snowboarding champion Chloe Kim won a leading three ESPYs, including best female athlete, while Alex Ovechkin claimed best male athlete. Kim had tears in her eyes as she listened to the Arthur Ashe recipients. “We must start caring about children’s safety more than we care about adults’ reputations,” Klein said. “If we can just give one person the courage to use their voice, this is worth it.” Raisman added, “For too long we were ignored. It could have been avoided. All we needed was one adult to have the integrity to stand between us and Larry Nassar.” The audience gave the group a prolonged standing ovation and remained on its feet while the women spoke. “What a powerful stage up here,” host Danica Patrick said before signing off. Ovechkin joined Roger Federer and Olympic snowboarder Shaun White as double winners. Ovechkin was in Russia with his wife, Nastya, who is 8½ months pregnant. Newly retired racecar driver Patrick became the first woman to host the show at the Microsoft Theater in downtown Los Angeles. Her opening monologue mostly fell flat, with athletes sitting stone-faced or wincing at many of the jokes. They’ve sacrificed so much for me.” Kim also claimed trophies for best female Olympian and female action sports athlete. At the Pyeongchang Games in February, she became the youngest to win a snowboarding medal when the then-17-year-old claimed gold in halfpipe. Ovechkin, who led the Washington Capitals to their first Stanley Cup championship, also won for best NHL player. He beat out Patriots quarterback Tom Brady and fellow first-time nominees Jose Altuve of the Houston Astros and James Harden of the Houston Rockets for male athlete. Federer’s five-set victory at the Australian Open in January for his 20th Grand Slam singles title earned honors for record-breaking performance and he also received best male tennis player. White won best Olympic moment with his final-run performance in South Korea featuring back-to-back 1440s to take gold, and best male Olympian. The Astros were honored as best team for winning the franchise’s first World Series. LeBron James, soon to be starring across the street at Staples Center with the Los Angeles Lakers, won best NBA player for the third straight year on his 14th consecutive nomination in the category. Brady claimed best NFL player, while Mike Trout of the Los Angeles Angels won MLB player. On a big night for Olympians, the U.S. women’s hockey team earned best game honors for their shootout victory over Canada in the gold-medal game in South Korea. Donovan Mitchell of the Utah Jazz earned breakthrough athlete honors. Quarterback Nick Foles received the championship performance trophy for leading the Philadelphia Eagles to their first Super Bowl title. The Minnesota Vikings earned best moment honors for beating the New Orleans Saints on the last play of the NFL championship game. Notre Dame’s Arike Ogunbowale won in the best play category for hitting a buzzer-beater in the NCAA women’s title game. The best coach award was given posthumously to Aaron Feis, Scott Beigel and Chris Hixon, all of whom died in the mass shooting at Florida’s Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. Former quarterback Jim Kelly received the Jimmy V Award for Perseverance for his struggle with jaw cancer. Fellow NFL Hall of Famers Dan Marino and John Elway presented Kelly with the honor. Man Suspected Of Trying To Kill Wife With Chainsaw Arrested In SD County
(CBS NEWS) – FBI official Peter Strzok is trying to publicly defend his actions during investigations of both Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump during the 2016 presidential election as he testifies before a joint hearing before the House Judiciary and Oversight Committees on Thursday . Testimony has been slowed by bitter partisan arguments among the members on the panels. At one point, after just one member had questioned Strzok, the panel voted on whether to subpoena former White House strategist Steve Bannon. Strzok’s anti-Trump text messages fueled suspicions of partisan bias over the course of the 2016 election and Hillary Clinton email investigation. Congressional investigators are continuing to probe the Department of Justice and FBI after an internal inspector general report criticized leadership at the top levels during the Clinton investigation. While the report ultimately found political bias did not affect the final conclusion of the investigation, it raised serious questions about the FBI’s integrity during the contentious election. In revelations from the report, Strzok exchanged troubling communications with a fellow FBI colleague Lisa Page in which he appeared adamant that they would “stop” then-candidate Trump from ever becoming president. Page and Strzok both worked on the FBI investigation into Clinton’s emails and, later, on special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia investigation.Strzok faced aggressive questioning from Chairman Trey Gowdy, R-South Carolina, on this point. Strzok told the panels today that he “doesn’t recall” writing the text, saying that it was an off-the-cuff message written late at night, and it did not suggest that he or the FBI would take any action to intervene in election. He also said that he wrote the text in response to Mr. Trump’s comments about a Gold Star family. During the campaign, Mr. Trump had disparaged Khizr Khan after he delivered an emotional indictment of the then-GOP nominee at the Democratic convention. “If you look at his wife, she was standing there. She had nothing to say. She probably, maybe she wasn’t allowed to have anything to say,” he speculated to ABC News about Ghazala Khan, who had stood on the stage next to her husband. The Khans’ son was killed in the Iraq War in 2004. The texts, in addition to previously released exchanges, have since given ammunition to the claim from conservatives that Strzok and others in the FBI were actively working against Mr. Trump. Deputy Assistant FBI Director Peter Strzok testifies before a joint committee hearing of the House Judiciary and Oversight and Government Reform committees in the Rayburn House Office Building on Capitol Hill July 12, 2018 in Washington, DC. (Photo by Chip Somodevilla/Getty Images) Follow along for live updates of Thursday’s hearing to begin streaming at 10:00 am : Strzok says he “did not” advise Mueller about relationship with Page Strzok, pressed by Rep. Karen Handel of Georgia, said he “did not” advise Mueller about his relationship with Lisa Page. Strzok said he did not find the information relevant. Strzok says FBI is generally “conservative” Strzok, pressed about the political views of fellow FBI agents, said he didn’t generally know the specific political beliefs of fellow FBI agents. But typically, people in the FBI are “conservative,” he said. Strzok made the comments in response to questions from Wisconsin’s Republican Rep. Glenn Grothman, who appeared to be pressing Strzok to say most of his colleagues are liberal. Generally, Strzok said, FBI agents in the D.C. office are “strongly conservative, strongly law and order, strongly national defense.” Strzok: “I am deeply regretful of those texts” Strzok said that he is “deeply regretful” of sending the anti-Trump texts to his colleague, but said that he did so with an expectation of privacy. “I had no idea that this was going to happen ,” he said, adding that he would not have done so otherwise. Still, Strzok said he doesn’t think his text messages are indicative of bias. Strzok says the FBI received documents from Bruce Ohr Rep. Jordan asked Strzok if he received any documents from Bruce Ohr. Strzok hesitated, checked with his counsel, and was then authorized to say: “not me, the FBI received documents and material from Mr. Ohr.” The session then paused for a recess so the congressmen present could go to votes on the House floor. Rep. DeSantis says he doesn’t think Strzok’s answers have been credible “The idea that there’s no bias here– I don’t think your explanations have been credible,” Rep. DeSantis said to Strzok. He later asked Strzok about the funding of the Steele Dossier, which the FBI has directed Strzok may not answer at this time. Time yielded to Chairman Gowdy Rep. Virginia Foxx yielded her time to Chairman Gowdy, who asked Strzok about his mention of impeachment on the day the special counsel was appointed. “My concern was not knowing, given these allegations, what existed,” Strzok said. “Whether on the one hand, there was no criminal activity whatsoever… or on the far end that there might be an impeachable offense.” Rep. Gohmert asks Strzok about his wife Rep. Louie Gohmert asked Strzok how many times he’s “looked into his wife’s eyes” and lied to her, as Gohmert claims Strzok has lied to the joint committee. The remark is a jab at Strzok’s affair with his former colleague Lisa Page. Those present at the hearing burst into an uproar and one representative suggested that the Gohmert “needs his medication” for the “inappropriate” question before order was called. Rep. Cohen says this hearing is just a distraction “If I could give you a purple heart, I would,” Rep. Steve Cohen said, calling the hearing an “attack” on Strzok. Cohen criticized the hearing as a distraction from Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election and a way to discredit Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation. “It’s astonishing to me that you would be put on trial as you have today,” Cohen said, praising Strzok’s work in security. House moves to recess for 1 hour Members are taking a 1 hour recess from the hearing for votes and will reconvene at 2:00 pm. Strzok reiterates “sincere regret” for texts While Strzok says he doesn’t agree with lawmakers’ characterization that his views were bias, the sentiment in his text messages “were not intended as direct animus as any set of people.” “I do sincerely regret that,” he said. Strzok said every day he walked in the door at the FBI, “the entirety of my action was dedicated to pursuing the facts wherever they lie.” He added that it would not have been necessary or required to recuse himself from any investigation. Democrats demand release of transcript of Strzok’s closed-door testimony Democratic members are urging Chairman Goodlatte to release the transcript of Strzok’s previous 11-hour long testimony offered to members behind closed doors out of transparency, citing that portions of the transcript have been leaked to the press. Goodlatte has vehemently denied such a request saying the request is disrupting the process of the hearing. Rep. David Cicilline of Rhode Island says that despite Goodlatte’s denial, he may move to unilaterally release the transcript citing no House rule dictating against its release. He set a deadline of 5:00 PM today to be given a reason not to. Goodlatte presses Strzok on his removal from special counsel probe Strzok tells Chairman Goodlatte that he never felt it necessary to recuse himself from the Russia probe over his personal beliefs. He told lawmakers that it was his impression that his removal was based on the desire to avoid any appearance of potential bias. Strzok, however, was adamant that his text messages were “not indicative of bias.” “I did not think that bias was exprsed in those text messages,” he added. Strzok said that it was impossible to say that “people must not have political opinion, everyone does, of course they do, the test is if that is left behind when they do their job.” Goodlatte asks for clarification on Trump supporter texts Goodlatte, referencing another well-known text exchange: “What does Trump support smell like?” Strzok says he was “struck by the extraordinary difference in the expression of political opinion” between voters in northern and southern VA; he called the text “flippant” “Do you understand the implications of this text when my constituents in Virginia read it?” Goodlatte asked. Strzok replied: “I do, sir. I would ask you to tell them that was, in some cases, a certainly unfortunate use of words.” Strzok says “no room for personal belief” at FBI “There’s no room for personal belief. It’s something culturally that doesn’t occur,” Strzok tells lawmakers, saying that there are numerous procedures and guidelines in place at the FBI to stop such instances of agents who are acting in any way other than an official capacity. “When I tell you that I personally what I believe and what I did, I understand why people may have doubts. But look at the entirety of the rest of the organization of all the things that are in place,” he added. House disrupts hearing to vote on Bannon subpeona The House broke questioning to hold a 5 minute long vote to table a motion made by Democratic Rep. Eric Swalwell of California to subpoena former Trump aide Steve Bannon over his refusal to answer lawmaker’s questions, similar to threats Strzok received during Thursday’s hearing. The motion, after a lengthy back and forth, was tabled. Strzok says he “doesn’t recall” writing text suggesting he’d stop Trump Strzok says a text message suggesting that he would stop then-candidate Trump from being president was written late at night, and “in no way suggested that I or the FBI would take any action” to intervene in Trump’s election. He said he also didn’t recall writing it but that it was off the cuff and based on Mr. Trump’s comments about the Khan family and needs to be understood in the context of the political climate at the time. “It was in no way — unequivocally — any suggestion that me, the FBI, would take any action whatsoever to improperly impact the electoral process for any candidate,” Strzok sternly told lawmakers. He added, “at no time, in any of those texts, did those personal beliefs enter into the realm of any action I took.” A round of applause is heard in the hearing chamber as Strzok’s impassioned defense of his actions ends. Gowdy’s fiery exchange with Strzok Watch Gowdy’s entire exchange with Strzok, which took up the majority of time at the very start of Thursday’s hearing. Members break into argument over Strzok’s refusal to answer question Strzok objects to questions related to Russian interference as Gowdy continues to press the agent on specifics on the FBI’s probe into possible collusion between the Russian government and the Trump campaign. “I understand your question and would like to answer. As you know, the counsel of the FBI have directed me not to answer any questions about any questions about ongoing investigations,” Strzok replies. Chairman Goodlatte and Nadler then broke out into a sparring match over points of order of the hearing and the agent’s refusal to answer the question. (© 2018 CBS Interactive Inc. NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Officials issued a warning for people living in eastern Queens after police say thieves have been targeting mailboxes, hoping to cash in on residents’ stolen mail. “We don’t put our mail in the mailbox anymore because it’s happening multiple times,” Queens resident Andrew Ferdinandi said. The NYPD says the thieves steal checks from postal boxes, then forge those check and steal money as part of what they call a “complex scheme.” “It happened to my wife’s grandma, she noticed a week or two later her account was empty,” Bayside resident Adam Brown said. Police say dozens of boxes have been hit recently, one even right outside a post office in Bayside. “You feel it’s safe by the post office but now I won’t,” resident Linda Lacertosa said. Investigators say they’ve already made one arrest this week, but the thefts can be difficult to trace because oftentimes victims don’t even realize they’ve been targeted until weeks after dropping their checks in the mail. “You don’t find out until you get a late notice that your bill didn’t get to the destination,” Bayside resident Tina Nomikoudis said. The 111th Precinct advises people to drop their bills inside the post office to avoid any risk of theft. Got bills to mail? Drop them inside the the Post Office. Our @USPS mailboxes won’t be secure until they are replaced AND have new locks. — NYPD 111th Precinct (@NYPD111Pct) July 9, 2018 “Our USPS mailboxes won’t be secure until they are replaced and have new locks,” the precinct tweeted. The NYPD says the USPS is installing fortified boxes and reining in errant mailbox keys throughout the borough.

NYPD Issues Postal Warning After Rash Of Mailbox Thefts In Queens
VAN NUYS (CBSLA) — Police are investigating after a Los Angeles woman was harassed on the road and followed home by an angry driver. It’s a story that Lynn Ferguson would like to forget — when a simple shopping trip turned into a nightmare. Ferguson was on her way from the store when she signaled to merge into a left lane on Van Nuys Blvd. It was all captured on her dashcam. “He pulled in front of me and I thought he was doing it for a laugh,” she remembered. But it seems she upset the driver of a black Honda Civic, who sped past her. At one point the driver swerves then stops in the middle of the road, preventing Ferguson from getting around. He’s seen gesturing her to come forward. Ferguson’s concern then grew when she says she saw the driver reach for something. “If I had pulled up beside him, what would he have done?” Ferguson asked. Ferguson made the fastest turn she could to head home and the driver sped off. She thought it was over. Then, she realized he had followed her home. When her husband retrieved the dashcam video, he was shocked. “He got out of the car, he threw a rock at my wife’s car. I was dumbfounded and angry and shouted and he quickly got in his car and drove off,” Mark Tweddle said. Ferguson still has no idea what she did to cause someone to get so angry, but she’s grateful her kids weren’t in the car and her husband was home. She worries now if the driver could do this to her, who could be next? “It was me yesterday,” she said. “There will be someone else tomorrow. There may even be someone else today.” The LAPD is investigating the case.
