NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — It’s a scandal that has shaken the faith of many Catholics — allegations of sexual abuse of minors and seminarians by former Newark Archbishop Theodore McCarrick . Now, a long-awaited Vatican report spells out how rumors of misconduct failed to stop his rise, all the way to the College of Cardinals, CBS2’s Tony Aiello reported Tuesday. WEB EXTRA : Read The Vactican Investigation Report (.pdf) Pope Francis kept a promise by releasing the 461-page report, which attempts to answer a troubling question about McCarrick. “How a man who had rumors swirling about him, about how he liked to sleep with seminarians could nevertheless rise to the top of the Catholic church,” AP religion writer Nicole Winfield said. Charming and well-spoken in five languages, McCarrick was a leading figure in American Catholicism for years. He was the Bishop of Metuchen, Archbishop of Newark, and Cardinal of Washington D.C. Now, the 90-year-old is disgraced, defrocked, and widely viewed as a deceiver. “Tony, I wish I could say you were exaggerating it a little. I don’t think you are,” Timothy Cardinal Dolan said. “(He) deceived the faithful, and at one point perhaps even deceived John Paul II?” Aiello asked. “(McCarrick) was an extraordinarily persuasive, talented, energetic, manipulative, deceitful person who was an accomplished master at keeping this dark side under check and he deceived a lot of people, all the way to the top,” Dolan said. MORE : Lawsuit Claims Ex-Cardinal McCarrick Abused Boy In Newark In 1990s The report says Pope John Paul II believed McCarrick’s denial, after New York’s John Cardinal O’Connor raised red flags in a 1999 letter. It also faults several bishops for providing incomplete information about McCarrick to the Vatican. “We publish the report with sorrow,” said Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin. McCarrick dismissed earlier anonymous letters accusing him as attempted smears. “He had a tremendous ability to charm people, including presidents of the United States, including popes,” Dolan said. The report says Pope Benedict acted to sideline McCarrick, but never pushed for a full accounting of his misdeeds. Finally in 2017, a victim abused as a minor filed a substantiated complaint with the Archdiocese of New York, and McCarrick’s career ended. Almost 30 years after reports of misconduct first surfaced. The release of the report came a few days before U.S. bishops gather for their annual fall meeting, which has been overshadowed by the McCarrick scandal for two years. Aggressive Effort To Curb COVID-19 infection Rates Begins On Staten Island; N.J. Restrictions Looming
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Mayor Bill de Blasio reminded everyone Tuesday that the city is on the brink of a second wave of the coronavirus pandemic. Efforts to combat the rise started on Staten Island in the morning and soon will begin in New Jersey as well, CBS2’s John Dias reported. Commuters were greeted differently at the Staten Island Ferry. City workers made sure everyone at the terminal had a mask, and understands that free testing at the site starts on Thursday. Fantasy Football Waiver Wire Week 10: Broncos Rookie KJ Hamler Beginning To Emerge
By Matt Citak ( CBS Boston )- Well folks, Week 10 is here, which means we have entered the final month of the fantasy regular season. For most leagues, the fantasy postseason kicks off in Week 14. This means there are only four more weeks to clinch your spot in the playoffs, rise in the standings, or even seal that first-round bye. For the first time in what seems like a while, we survived a weekend of games without any significant injuries to fantasy contributors. Several players suffered concussions, paving the way for short-term relevance for some backups, while other lowly-owned players put up solid performances. While it may not be the biggest week on the waiver wire, there are still some solid pickups available. With that said, here are the top waiver wire adds for Week 10. Quarterback Credit: Norm Hall/Getty Images QB Tua Tagovailoa, Miami Dolphins- After a rough first start, Tua rebounded in a big way on Sunday. The fifth overall pick in this year’s draft completed just over 71 percent of his passes against the Arizona Cardinals, finishing with 248 passing yards, two touchdowns and zero interceptions, adding seven carries for 35 yards. Over the next three weeks, Tua will face off against the Chargers, Broncos and Jets, all of whom rank in the top 10 in most fantasy points allowed to opposing quarterbacks. The rookie has a fantastic opportunity to string together a few good performances in a row, making him a great streaming option for at least the next three weeks. QB Drew Lock, Denver Broncos- The Broncos offense has been difficult to trust all season, but there is no denying that the unit performs significantly better with Lock under center. In Denver’s disappointing Week 9 loss to the Falcons, Lock completed just 52 percent of his passes. However, he threw for 313 yards and two touchdowns, while picking up 47 yards and an additional touchdown on the ground. This upcoming week, Lock and the Broncos will face off against the Las Vegas Raiders, who just allowed Justin Herbert to throw for 326 yards, two touchdowns and zero interceptions. Lock is firmly on the streaming radar in Week 10. Running Back RB Duke Johnson, Houston Texans- One of the players to suffer a concussion in Week 9 was Texans running back David Johnson. Following the injury, Duke Johnson stepped into the role of the team’s lead back, and while he wasn’t terribly effective, he did end up having his best game of the season. Johnson finished with a season-high 16 carries, gaining 41 yards and scoring a touchdown, and caught all four of his targets for 32 yards. If David Johnson is unable to suit up this week, Duke Johnson will make a solid fantasy play for a Week 10 matchup against the Cleveland Browns. While we won’t know David Johnson’s game status until late in the week, add Duke Johnson now in case he’s thrust into the lead role again. RB J.D. McKissic, Washington Football Team- Antonio Gibson is clearly the most talented running Credit: Greg Fiume/Getty Images back in Washington’s backfield, but that hasn’t stopped McKissic from getting his fair share of touches. Now with Kyle Allen out indefinitely and Alex Smith under center, McKissic could see his role grow even more. In the Week 9 loss to the Giants, McKissic was targeted a whopping 14 times, turning it into nine receptions for 65 yards. In the two games Smith has filled in for Allen, he has attempted 49 passes with 18 of them going in McKissic’s direction. That is an incredible 36.7 percent target share. While that mark is likely not sustainable, Smith does have a history of targeting his running backs a lot. Allen could be the starting QB for the remainder of the season, which should bode well for McKissic’s fantasy value moving forward. If he’s still available on the wire, grab McKissic and don’t think twice about it. RB Jordan Wilkins, Indianapolis Colts- Following Marlon Mack’s season-ending injury in Week 1, Jonathan Taylor was supposed to take over as the Colts’ bell cow back. But after receiving 26 carries in Week 2, Taylor has topped 13 rush attempts just once over the last six games. Taylor got just six carries in Week 9 after seeing only 11 the week prior. Meanwhile, Wilkins has carried the ball 31 times in the last two weeks combined, gaining 128 yards and a touchdown. It appears as if there has been a changing of the guard in Indy, and while this backfield may be hard to trust moving forward, it looks like Wilkins is now the preferred ball-carrier. Over the next six weeks, the Colts get to face off against the Titans, Packers, Titans again, Texans, Raiders and Texans again. All four of those teams are currently in the top 10 in fantasy points allowed to opposing running backs. If Indy commits to Wilkins as the lead back, he could end up being a league-winner. RB Kallen Ballage, Los Angeles Chargers- The other running back injury to occur in Week 9 was Justin Jackson’s knee injury suffered on the first play of the game. Brutal luck for anyone who had Jackson in their lineup, but it did pave the way for journeyman back Kallen Ballage to see his first significant action as a Charger. Ballage finished with a team-high 15 carries for 69 yards (4.6 yards per carry) and a touchdown while catching two of three targets for 15 yards. Joshua Kelley has been disappointing since Austin Ekeler’s injury, but the rookie fourth round pick did end up catching five passes for 31 yards in Week 9. It’s unclear how serious Jackson’s injury is, although the fact that he got hurt so early in the game and did not return is not a good sign. Couple that with Austin Ekeler’s likely return in the near future, and it does not look like Ballage will remain fantasy relevant for too long. However, until Jackson and/or Ekeler are back, Ballage looks like the Chargers’ lead runner, placing him on the fantasy radar. Wide Receiver WR Curtis Samuel, Carolina Panthers- Don’t look now but Samuel has registered a touchdown in three consecutive games. The fourth-year receiver enjoyed the best game of his 2020 campaign against the Chiefs in Week 9, catching a season-high nine passes for 105 yards and a touchdown. Samuel has also earned several rush attempts each game, as he added three carries for 13 yards and recorded a touchdown run in both Weeks 7 and 8. It is clear that the Panthers want to get the ball in Samuel’s hands as much as possible. After being held out of the end zone in the first five weeks of the season, Samuel now has four total touchdowns over the last three games. Samuel should be a priority add for anyone in need of some help at wide receiver. WR K.J. Hamler, Denver Broncos- While the Broncos are certainly disappointed by their Week 9 loss to the Falcons, the team must be encouraged by the performance of some of its young offensive players. We already touched on Drew Lock, while Jerry Jeudy just had the best game of his rookie campaign, and he’s not the only receiver to do so. Hamler was targeted 10 times against Atlanta, catching six of those passes for 75 yards and adding one run for 15 yards. After a hamstring injury sidelined him earlier in the season, Hamler finally appears fully healthy and his production supports this. Hamler also returned one punt and one kickoff return in Week 9, highlighting the fact that the Broncos want the ball in their rookie third round pick’s hands. Hamler could step up as the number two option in the Broncos’ passing game behind Jeudy, a role which should plant him firmly on the fantasy map. WR Danny Amendola, Detroit Lions- Kenny Golladay missed this one due to the hip injury suffered in Week 8, which allowed Amendola to fill in as Matthew Stafford’s favorite target. In the first two weeks of the season with Golladay sidelined, Amendola was targeted seven times each game. In Week 9, Amendola led the Lions with 10 targets while no other receiver had more than five. The slot receiver turned those targets into seven receptions for 77 yards, but was held out of the end zone yet again. Amendola is yet to score this season, but offers a solid floor when Golladay is not on the field. If Golladay is unable to go this week, Amendola should make a solid FLEX play against Washington, who’s strength in the secondary lies on the outside with Kendall Fuller. Tight End TE Austin Hooper, Cleveland Browns- Hooper missed the last two games leading up to Cleveland’s Week 9 bye, which is why he has seemingly fallen off the radar for many fantasy owners. In the three weeks prior to that, Hooper was targeted a total of 23 times, finishing with five receptions for either 50+ yards or finishing with a touchdown in each contest. Hooper has yet to take the field since Odell Beckham’s season-ending injury, which will likely lead to Baker Mayfield leaning on his tight end even more. In Week 10, Hooper and the Browns will welcome the Houston Texans to Cleveland. In one game against the Texans last year, Hooper, then a member of the Falcons, caught six passes for 56 yards. Hooper is a TE1 in this matchup, and could end up being a reliable option at fantasy’s weakest position for the rest of the season depending on the play of Mayfield. With Travis Kelce and Hayden Hurst both on byes, you’d be hard pressed to find a better replacement than Hooper this week.

Election 2020: Thousands Of Absentee Ballots Just Starting To Be Counted Could Decide Close Races Across New York
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — The voters have spoken, but their verdicts remain unknown in a significant number of races in New York . From seats in Congress to the make-up of the State Senate, it’s coming down to the painstaking work of counting absentee ballots, CBS2’s Tony Aiello reported Monday. In the the drab recesses of the Westchester Board of Elections, the vital work of democracy is done one absentee ballot at a time. “Every legal ballot will count, that gets in here in a timely fashion, will count,” said Westchester Election Commissioner Reginald Lafayette. Absentees are literally stamped with the word, “timely,” as they are sorted and verified. Aiello saw one absentee ballot was set aside. A double-check found the person who mailed it in also voted in-person. Their absentee vote won’t count. Peter Harckham . That could easily change as absentees and affidavits are counted. “Literally, we may not know until Thanksgiving which, you know, all day all I hear is Carly Simon’s ‘Anticipation,’ and then when that finally gets out of my head, I hear Tom Petty’s ‘The Waiting Game.’ So, it’s like, you know, we all go crazy right now,” Astorino said. Stewart-Cousins told Aiello that accepting the loss with dignity helped her win two years later. “When people see that you’re not in a frenzy, that you’re not screaming at your opponent, you’re not tearing down the Board of Elections, it makes a difference because, at some point, it talks about your character,” she said. Absentee ballots will also settle the 3rd Congressional District race . Republican George Santos has a razor thin lead over Congressman Tom Suozzi with more than 70,000 absentee ballots to be counted. Democrats and republicans jointly supervise the process, working together so the will of the voters is honored. New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy Announces Indoor Dining Restrictions; ‘We Have To Shake Off The Pandemic Fatigue’
TRENTON, N.J. (CBSNewYork) — New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy on Monday announced bars and restaurants statewide must close indoor dining by 10 p.m. starting Nov. 12. Outdoor dining, takeout and delivery service may continue past 10 p.m., the governor said at a coronavirus briefing. “Looking at the data, we are taking surgical steps that we hope will help mitigate the current increasing rate of spread. No one up here wants to take the type of broad and all encompassing actions like those we had to take in March,” said Murphy. MORE: New Jersey Business Owners Bracing For Tightened Restrictions As COVID-19 Cases Continue To Climb Statewide Indoor service may not resume until 5 a.m., Murphy said. The indoor capacity limit remains at 25 percent. Casinos are also required to follow the late-night, indoor dining restrictions, which will not impact gaming operations. “We have to shake off the pandemic fatigue that I know we all feel. I feel it as well,” said Murphy. “We have to get back into the mindset that saw us crush the curve in the spring.” Watch Gov. Murphy’s Press Conference: Seating at bars will be prohibited during all hours when the new restrictions take effect. The governor said restaurants may place tables closer than six feet apart if they are separated by barriers in order to accommodate customers who would ordinarily sit at the bar. Officials said there is evidence that people sitting at the bar, having drinks and close conversations, are spreading the virus. In addition to the indoor restrictions, Murphy announced restaurants will be allowed to construct heated tents – or “bubbles” – around outdoor tables as long as they are limited to one group of diners each and are thoroughly cleaned. The announcements came as COVID rates rise across the Tri-State Area . New Jersey is recording an average of more than 2,300 new cases per day. Hospitalizations are also climbing, too. MORE: Cuomo Says Managing Infection Rates Will Be Critical As New York’s Coronavirus Numbers Climb The hospitality industry has been ravaged by the pandemic. Monday’s announcement was yet another round of bad news for Teddy Perides, who owns Biagio’s Ristorante in Paramus. “I’ll be honest with you, my stomach, it turned, because we though we’d go back to normal. Little by little. This was like we got hit with a sledgehammer,” Perides told CBS2’s Nick Caloway. While most customers finish eating by 10 p.m., closing early is devastating for revenue from the bar and private events. It could have massive impacts statewide. Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop said COVID doesn’t know what time it is, and curfews on restaurants could do more harm than good. “It seems to me that if you put restrictions or curfews on restaurants, you’re only going to be pushing more people into the small gatherings in the home area, which is a big spreader,” Fulop said. The new restrictions will also affect some youth sports, which must travel between different states in order to compete. Cuomo Says Managing Infection Rate Will Be Critical As New York’s Coronavirus Numbers Climb
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — New York State is facing a grim outlook in the fight against the coronavirus pandemic. Gov. Andrew Cuomo says the state has almost the same number of infections as back in June, and things could get worse before they get better. “You will see through the fall the numbers going up nationwide,” the governor told ABC’s “Good Morning America” on Monday. “Scientists said that was going to happen. It’s going to be managing the infection increase, which is going to be the challenge.” On Sunday, Cuomo announced there were 18 fatalities the day before and the statewide positivity rate was 2.3%– the highest it’s been since June. “Our seven-day rolling average 2.21% — the highest we’ve seen in a long time,” Mayor Bill de Blasio said Monday. “Now we’re having some challenges on Staten Island . So we’re going to focus a lot of resources there to protect the people of Staten Island and to stop this second wave. We’re going to see a ‘day of action’ tomorrow on Staten Island — and this day of action means a lot outreach, a lot of mask distribution, a lot of testing.” Many told CBS2’s John Dias they fear another lockdown. “Maybe we’ll have to take a minute or two out again and do it,” one woman told Dias. “Too many people keep dying. They can’t control what’s going on,” Cypress Hills resident Tomas Baleao said. “I think it’s gotten so far out of control at this point,” another person added. 4.0 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Near Massachusetts, Felt In CT, Long Island, USGS Says
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/CNN) — A 4.0 magnitude earthquake struck near Bliss Corner, Massachusetts, on Sunday morning, according to preliminary information from the US Geological Survey . The quake was felt more than 100 miles away, in Connecticut , New Hampshire and Sound Beach , New York, on Long Island , the USGS says. According to a USGS map, the quake struck off Mishaum Point , a peninsula in southeastern Massachusetts that extends into Buzzards Bay. (Credit: US Geological Survey) The epicenter appears to be about four miles south-southwest of Bliss Corner, which is located in the town of Dartmouth, just south of New Bedford and about 35 miles southeast of Providence, Rhode Island. There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage, and the USGS said there is a low likelihood of casualties or economic losses. There is no threat of tsunami, the National Weather Service says. Small earthquakes strike New England and Long Island roughly twice a year, while moderate ones hit the region every few decades, the USGS says. The most recent New England quake to cause considerable damage was a 5.6 magnitude that shook central New Hampshire in 1940, the survey says. CBS2 Weather Headlines: Monday Will Be A Lot Like Sunday, So Get Out And Enjoy It
By Mark McIntyre CBS2 Meteorologist/Weather Producer NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Good Monday morning! A clear and crisp start to the day will be followed by more unseasonable warmth in the afternoon. High temperatures will once again reach the low and mid 70s for many, and there could be more records tied or set. (Photo: CBS2) Tuesday will be another nice day, but it won’t be as warm as the weekend was, with temps “only” in the upper 60s. Some clouds will move in late in the day, but it looks like daylight will stay dry. Veterans Day appears to be the soggiest of the week, with a slow-moving frontal system bringing some much-needed rain. But until then, enjoy the sunshine. CBS2 Weather Headlines: Monday Will Be A Lot Like Sunday, So Get Out And Enjoy It
PATERSON, N.J. (CBSNewYork) — One woman was killed and dozens of people were displaced, following a big fire on Sunday morning that spread to multiple buildings. As CBS2’s Lisa Rozner reported, it was a devastating situation in Paterson . Hours later, crews were demolishing two of the five homes damaged by the fire, which reached five alarms. Firefighters remained on the scene in case any additional hot pockets were found in the debris. Paterson Deputy Fire Chief Ryan Murray told Rozner the blaze broke out just before 2 a.m. at 489 Summer St. It’s unclear how it started, but the flames moved quickly. “Companies were met with two buildings that were fully involved, rapidly extending fire to buildings surrounding. We have all close-in-space wood frames in this area,” Murray said. It took 120 first responders several hours to get the fire under control. In all, around 47 people from nine families were evacuated and two firefighters suffered minor injuries. Sadly one woman, identified as 53-year-old Felicia Hernandez De La Cruz, died, the Passaic County prosecutor said. A neighbor said she had five children, adding one son initially got her to safety. However, she ran back into the burning building to save her dog. “She used to sell some food here as well. So anybody who didn’t have money to pay her, I mean, she wouldn’t mind,” the neighbor said. Rozner spoke with her and a tenant, who didn’t want to show his face on TV. “Hard-working people, decent people. As hard working, as good as they come, so it really is unfortunate and extremely sad,” owner Nieves Nunez said. “I didn’t have time to react. I was able to get my cat, evacuate the rest of my family members,” the tenant added. “I lost everything, money.” The Red Cross was on the scene helping those displaced. Thankfully, Dafne Zarate’s grandfather was not home because he had just had eye surgery. “It’s just sad because he has lived his whole life here,” Zarate said. It’s a life that will have to start anew. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. You can get the latest news, sports and weather on our brand new CBS New York app. Download here .

NYPD: Bronx Suspect Got Into 89-Year-Old Woman’s Apartment Through Unlocked Door, Robbed Her In Bedroom
(credit: NYPD) NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — The NYPD is trying to find a man accused of entering an elderly woman’s Bronx apartment and robbing her. It happened near Beck Street and Longwood Avenue at around 2:30 a.m. on Saturday, according to police. The suspect allegedly got into the 89-year-old woman’s ground-floor apartment through the back door, which was apparently unlocked, police said. “It has been tough. I keep repeating it in my mind over and over again … I’m not a good sleeper and I was about to start reading and I hadn’t turned my light on yet and I saw someone come by my bedroom door with a flashlight. I thought it was my son,” the victim told CBS2’s Cory James exclusively. But it was not her son, who lives upstairs. When the suspect encountered the woman in her bedroom, he grabbed her arm, threw her on the bed and demanded money, police said. The victim gave him her purse, police added. “I thought I could grab out a $20 (bill) and give it to him, but he took the whole purse. There was $100,” she said. The NYPD released this surveillance video of the suspect: The suspect fled through the back door, leaving the woman recovering from hip and leg surgery with bruises on her leg and arm. Neighbors said they were disturbed by what happened. “It really is so disgusting to hear something like that,” Lydia Santiago said. “There’s no courtesy, no respect for the elders,” Juan Berrios added. “I’m glad he didn’t hurt me more. He bruised me, but he didn’t do anything more. At 89, I could be hurt very badly and I wasn’t,” the victim said. Police believe the suspect is in his 50s and approximately 6 feet tall. The victim admitted that the door to her apartment was unlocked. She said it was a one-time mistake that she will not make again. NYPD investigators want the public to take a good look at the suspect and if you know him you are asked to call the Crime Stoppers hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477), or for Spanish, 1-888-57-PISTA (74782). You can also submit a tip via their website or on Twitter, @NYPDTips . All calls are kept confidential.
