Man Sought In Mysterious 2005 Killing Of Father In Hacienda Heights

HACIENDA HEIGHTS (CBSLA) – Police have released a sketch of a man of interest wanted in connection with the mysterious shooting death of a 27-year-old Hacienda Heights man more than 12 years ago. (L.A. County Sheriff’s Department) On Dec. 6, 2005, Edward Berber was found shot to death at his home in the 1800 block of Charlemont Avenue. He was discovered dead by his mother after she went to check up on him after having not heard from him for several days. In a news conference Tuesday, Sheriff Jim McDonnell said that it appears that Berber was shot while sleeping. Nothing was stolen from the home and there was no sign of forced entry. At this time, investigators do not have a connection between the person of interest and the victim, or a possible motive in the killing. “This is definitely not the normal case,” Sgt. Robert Marindale said. “And there’s nothing in Edward’s background to suggest that he had any falling out with anyone in the neighborhood, or any of the family at this point.” Edward Berber. (LASD) Investigators believe that Berber was killed sometime between Dec. 2 and Dec. 5. Berber, who had two children ages 3 and 8 at the time, was estranged from his wife and in the process of getting a divorce, McDonnell said. His children were with their mother, Tanya. Berber was home alone. “My brother had goals, he worked all his life to be accomplished and professional, with a master’s degree from Notre Dame, was about to take his CPA test,” said Berber’s sister, Alejandra Johnson. “He had dreams and goals, not just for him, but for his family.” The composite was developed based on re-interviewing witnesses, Marindale said. It depicts what the person of interest looked like back in 2005. “With the advancements in forensic science, investigators are hopeful that retesting the physical and biological evidence will help to jumpstart the investigation, and potentially identify the suspect or suspects,” McDonnell said. A $10,000 reward has been offered for information leading to an arrest. Anyone within information is asked to call LASD at 323-890-5500, or Crime Stoppers at 800-222-TIPS.

Virginia Man Called Cops After Hard Foul In Pickup Basketball Game

Sterling, VA (CBS Local)- A pickup game at a LA Fitness gym in Virginia took a serious turn when one of the participants called the police after being fouled. The visit from the police was captured in a photo posted to Twitter with the caption: “Today for the first time in my life…I experienced someone call the police because they got fouled hard in basketball”. He told the station that the man who called the police is a regular at the LA Fitness in Dulles Town Center and has played basketball there many times. Apparently, the man ran into a hard screen during the course of the pickup game and was knocked to the floor. According to the witness, identified as Aaron, the man was upset by the screen and threatened to call the police before walking off the court. Aaron believed the man was joking, but sure enough the man went to the front desk to call 911. “When the cops came, he was like, ‘why are you wasting my time?’” Aaron told FOX 5. The gym has confirmed that the incident occurred, but there is no surveillance footage of the incident because there are no cameras focused on the court. The Loudon County Sheriff’s Office has yet to comment.

Deputies Investigating After Family Tied Up, Man Pistol-Whipped In Violent Home Invasion In Palmdale

PALMDALE (CBSLA)  — Sheriff’s deputies are investigating a robbery in Palmdale that resulted in a family being tied up in their own home and left one man with injuries from being pistol-whipped. Deputies say they received a 911 call around 1:40 p.m. Monday reporting a home invasion indicating there were three male suspects in the house on Erika Ln. Investigators say the recipient of the call heard a struggle in the background shortly after, then the call was disconnected. When investigators arrived to the house, they found the family inside was tied up and robbed of cash and property. Residents came home to in the middle of the afternoon stunned by the scene. “To be coming up my street and seeing all these police cars lined up in front of his house and the yellow tape streaming around the trees, I was very shocked,” one neighbor said “I asked one of the officers if had someone had been killed,” another neighbor added. “He had explained that my neighbor had just been pistol-whipped by some intruders.” One neighbor says he spoke with the pistol-whipped victim. “I spoke to him briefly, he has knots all over his face and cuts and gashes on the back of his head from the pistol-whipping, and he’s terrified, he’s terrified,” the man said. Another neighbor spoke with the victim’s relative. “He told me who was home at the time was the man of the house, his wife and their infant child,” he said. Neighbors say the victims own several convenience stores in the area. On July 2, there was another home invasion not far from this house. In that case, the victim, the owner of a Thai Restaurant, was also robbed at her home. Sheriff’s investigators tell CBS2/KCAL9’s Rachel Kim it’s too early to know if the two cases are connected.

Man, 80, Allegedly Shoots Wife And Son In San Gabriel

SAN GABRIEL (CBSLA)  —  A man and a woman were shot Sunday in an unincorporated area of San Gabriel and the man who allegedly shot the pair was arrested, a sheriff’s lieutenant said. It happened just before 2 p.m. in a home on the 6300 block of Muscatel Avenue in a residential neighborhood, sheriff’s Lt. Marsha Williams said. The shooter has been identified as 80-year-old Adrian Ness.  The victims have been identified as his wife and son. Ness was taken into custody at the Sheriff’s Temple station and booked on two attempted murder charges. He is being held on $2 million. The suspect’s wife is also believed to be in her 80s. The son’s age was not revealed but both victims were said to be in critical condition following surgery. The shooting reportedly happened during a domestic violence situation. KCAL9’s Crystal Cruz reported from the scene and said the exact cause of the shooting is unknown. But one neighbor told her off-camera that the father and son were “having problems.”

SOUTH LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) — Residents in South L.A. who are tired of gun violence on their streets teamed up with the Los Angeles Police Dept. and the L.A. County Sheriff to help remember some of their loved ones felled by firearms. The group shut down a corner of Manchester and Vermont avenues with shoes that once belonged to the fallen. Barbara Pritchett brought two pairs of shoes to the rally called “They Used To Walk Among Us” Friday, one for each of her sons killed. “We’re tired. Us, as mothers, we choose life for our children” Pritchett told CBS2 News. “I just wanted the community to hear and see.[…] It’s all about saying something. A lot of people [are] afraid to say anything. For what reason? I don’t ever understand, because if we don’t ever get the closure to it, how are we gonna be able to stop the violence?” The killers of Pritchett’s sons were eventually caught thanks to the help of tipsters, a practice police were trying to make salient. “Somebody who comes forward as a witness may be a hero when you look at what they do to overcome […] the fear factor — to hold somebody accountable for taking someone else’s life senselessly,” L.A. County Sheriff Jim McDonnell to CBS2 News. “The accounts that we’ve heard tonight is how many people were senselessly killed over a pair of shoes, over a cross look, over a neighborhood,” said new LAPD Chief Michel Moore. “These men and women, they go out every day. They stand the difference between life and death for too many, and tonight we’re here to stand with out communities, to say we care.” The event was sponsored by Assemblyman Mike Gipson of Carson.

Revelation About LA Deputies’ Secret Clique Sparks Calls For Investigation

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) – Concern is growing over a supposed secret clique of Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies who brand their members with matching skull tattoos. The revelation this week that a deputy admitted to getting inked two years ago as part of a ritual within the LASD Compton station has raised concerns that deputy cliques, long part of a controversial agency subculture, have persisted despite the department’s reform efforts, the Los Angeles Times reported Friday. Some members of the Sheriff Civilian Oversight Commission are calling on LASD to investigate the issue. Hernan Vera, who serves on the SCOC, said the deputy’s admission in a lawsuit over a fatal shooting that he and as many as 20 others have the signature tattoos was “thoroughly disturbing,” The Times reported. The latest revelations, detailed this week by the Times, center on a deposition given in May by Deputy Samuel Aldama, who described under oath a tattoo on his calf featuring a skull in a military-style helmet bearing the letters CPT, for Compton, along with a rifle, encircled by flames. He said he got the tattoo in June 2016, about two months before he was involved in the fatal shooting of Donta Taylor, The Times reported. Sheriff Jim McDonnell said that for the last year, the department has been examining deputy tattoos, logos and symbolism within the organization, but he hasn’t launched a new investigation into the Compton station deputies. He said there is also a separate administrative investigation into the shooting, which may address the deputy’s admissions. The department has a history of clandestine groups with names like the Regulators, Grim Reapers and Jump Out Boys that have been accused of promoting highly aggressive tactics and perpetuating a code of silence among members. Five Hurt After Car Plows Into Crowd Outside Downey Bar; Driver Arrested

DOWNEY (CBSLA) – A man has been taken into custody on drunken driving charges after he allegedly drove his car into a crowd of people outside a Downey bar early Friday morning, injuring himself and four others. The collision occurred before 2:15 a.m. outside the Anarchy Library bar, at East Foster Road and Woodruff Avenue. Witnesses told CBS2 that the suspect, a 28-year-old man, was driving down the street, revving his engine just before he lost control and slammed into the crowd. The car also struck a pole and another car. “And he revved the engine up just to show off the engine in front of everybody in front of the club, showing off the engine, revving it, driving lightning fast,” witness Mark Gonzalez told CBS2. “Then he made a turn on this street going this direction, burning rubber, skidding across the intersection, and then I didn’t see him, and then a second later, boom, we heard the crash.” Four pedestrians were hurt, three of whom sustained critical injuries, the Los Angeles County Fire Department confirmed. One of the victims was pinned underneath the car and had to be rescued. “He got pinned between two cars and he was laying on the ground right there,” witness Gregory Jones said. “Personally, it hurts my heart to see anything like that, I had to walk across the street. I couldn’t even look any longer.” All four were rushed to a hospital and are expected to survive, the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department reports. The driver was also taken to a hospital with minor injuries and was later booked on charges of driving under the influence of intoxicants.

Second Arrest In Killing Of Rapper XXXTentacion

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (CBSLA/AP) — A second person has been arrested in the June shooting death of emerging rap star XXXTentacion, authorities in Florida announced Wednesday. Michael Boatwright, 22, is facing first-degree murder charges in the June 18 killing, the Broward Sheriff’s Office said in a news release. Boatwright was initially arrested last week on an unrelated drug charge, investigators said. Jail records didn’t list an attorney for him. Also charged in the killing outside a Deerfield Beach motorcycle shop is Dedrick Williams, 22. His lawyer has said he will plead not guilty. Authorities say robbery was the motive in the killing of the 20-year-old XXXTentacion, whose real name was Jahseh Onfroy. Detectives still want to talk with a third man, 22-year-old Robert Allen, who is described as a “person of interest” in the case and may know something about the killing. Allen is also wanted in Broward County on a felony warrant for violation of probation for possession of the drug flakka and carrying a concealed firearm, according to the sheriff’s office. On June 19, hundreds of people descended on Melrose Avenue in Los Angeles’s Fairfax District, shutting down traffic in a vigil for XXXTentacion. It prompted Los Angeles police to declare the vigil an unlawful assembly. Officers in riot gear fired less than lethal bean bag rounds and tear gas to disperse the crowd. One woman was injured when a person jumped onto a sidewalk and landed on her. XXXTentacion made headlines in May when the music-streaming app Spotify announced it was removing the rapper, along with singer R. Kelly, from its playlists due to its anti-hate policy. WILLOWBROOK (CBSLA) – A woman has been arrested on allegations she violently beat a 92-year-old grandfather while he was taking a walk in Willowbrook on the Fourth of July. Rodolfo Rodriguez recovers at his Willowbrook home. (CBS2) Laquisha Jones, 30, was arrested Tuesday on one count of assault with a deadly weapon, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department reports. She was taken into custody at 7:30 p.m. in the area of 60th Street and Crenshaw Avenue. At about 7:30 p.m. on July 4, 92-year-old Rodolfo Rodriguez was taking a walk at East 118th and Robin streets when he was at attacked. Rodriguez’s grandson, Eric Mendoza, told CBS2 that his grandfather was on the sidewalk when he accidentally bumped into a little girl while trying to walk around her. In response, a woman believed to be the girl’s mother threw Rodriguez to the ground and started hitting him with her fist. She then began striking him with a brick. “When I take the picture, she said, ‘oh, he tried to touch my girl,’” the witness said. “I saw everything, this is a lie. And when the guys came, they hit him in the face, his body, everything.” The attackers fled as law enforcement was being called, the witness said. Deputies responded to Martin Luther King Medical Center, where Rodriguez was taken. Rodriguez, who doesn’t speak English, suffered broken ribs, a broken cheek bone and bruises all over his body. He has since been released from the hospital and is recovering at his home. “I’m just overwhelmed how anybody can do this to a human being at all,” Mendoza said. “He’s 92 years of age. There’s no harm that he meant for you to treat him the way you did.” In a news release Wednesday, the sheriff’s department said that a motive in the attack is unknown and investigators are working to confirm the driver’s claim that several men joined in on the assault. The brick used in the beating has not been found. A GoFundMe page to raise money for Rodriguez’s medical bills has already received more than a quarter-million dollars. Jones, meanwhile, is being held on $200,000 bail. Anyone with information on the case should call LASD detectives at 323-568-4800.

Video: 72-Year-Old Man Allegedly Chases Neighbor With Tractor After Argument

ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. (CBS Local) –  A senior citizen in Florida is facing serious criminal charges after he was caught on video allegedly trying to attack his neighbor with a tractor. The St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office says 72-year-old Howell Morris got into an argument with Scott Lynch in mid-June. Lynch’s wife captured the property dispute on cellphone video before calling police. The Sheriff’s Office released those 911 calls to WJXT-TV  on July 9. “When you say he came after your husband with his tractor, did he chase him down?” the 911 dispatcher asked. “Yeah. He chased him down on his tractor and my husband had to run,” Lynch’s wife replied. The victim told deputies a dispute escalated when the suspect climbed onto his tractor and chased him down his driveway, yelling, “Run, fat [expletive]!” https://t.co/De8tJwereS — Lisa Bell (@LisaBellNews6) July 10, 2018 The cellphone video shows Morris climbing into his tractor and driving after a fleeing Lynch while screaming, “Run, fat [expletive]!” Police arrested Morris on June 19 and charged him with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon without intent to kill, which is a third-degree felony. The tractor driver was released on bond the next day and has been ordered to stay away from his neighbors.

Truck Sparks Brush Fire Off 15 Freeway In Cajon Pass

CAJON PASS (CBSLA) – A truck blaze sparked a 100-acre brush fire off the 15 Freeway in the Cajon Pass area of San Bernardino County Friday morning. (CBS2) The truck fire broke out before 9:50 a.m. near the 15 Freeway and the Kenwood Avenue exit, according to the San Bernardino National Forest. The fire then spread to nearby vegetation. The so-called Box Fire was threatening structures and was 0 percent contained as of 11:30 a.m., according to the San Bernardino National Forest. However, no evacuations had yet been ordered for the nearby Devore Heights neighborhood. There were no reported injuries. Cindy Bachman, a spokesperson for the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, said all residents of Devore Heights should be prepared for any evacuation notices. Two lanes of the northbound 15 Freeway were closed north of the junction with the 215 Freeway, Caltrans said.
