Grand Opening Held For Queens Housing Complex Devoted To LGBTQ Community

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — A grand opening was held Friday for a housing complex devoted to the LGBTQ community. GLITS South in Woodhaven , Queens, will be the first housing complex in New York City owned by the Black trans community. It’s aimed to help those who face housing discrimination because of their gender identity. “Thirty years of a dream, of doing something like this, but not just doing it, putting us in an area, in a location where we don’t have to run,” said Ceyenne Doroshow, executive director and founder of GLITS. The Queensboro President-elect was at Friday’s ribbon-cutting ceremony and says he hopes to fund more projects to house the transgender community. COVID In New Jersey: Hospital Official Expresses Concern As Cases Climb Because There’s No Backup Available This Time Around

NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) – New Jersey reported more than 3,000 new COVID infections Friday. The state’s daily case numbers remain at their highest levels since April. Now, hospitals in the northern part of the state, are being hit hard. As CBS2’s Nick Caloway reports, the number of new infections is rising in Newark, and more people are ending up in the hospital and the ICU. Then came the second wave. “We’re actually approaching 40 as of this morning, Nick. And we’re still seeing positivity rates increase out of our community health clinic,” said Dr. Shereef Elnahal, president and CEO of UH Newark, the state’s only public hospital. That’s because there won’t be as much out-of-state help on the front lines as we had in the spring. “We, as you mentioned, benefited from agency staffing, folks coming from out of state, the U.S. Army Reserves when the New York and New Jersey area were the global epicenter. But the pandemic was not yet affecting most of the country. Now that’s not the case. We’re seeing increases in almost every state,” Dr. Elnahal said. In New Jersey, hospitalizations are soaring. On Oct. 1, there were 523 COVID patients in New Jersey hospital beds. That number has since surged to more than 1,900 patients. But the news isn’t all bad. “It is encouraging that the death rate is dropping. And that’s primarily because the increase in cases has not yet hit, as much, vulnerable and older populations as it was in the spring,” Dr. Elnahal said. As the second wave hits New Jersey, Newark has become the epicenter of the state’s outbreak, where new restrictions are in place on restaurants and non-essential businesses, and curfews enacted in three zip codes. Statewide, restaurants must end indoor dining after 10 p.m. It’s all in an effort to flatten the curve, yet again. Beginning this weekend, state officials will be ramping up efforts to enforce those new restrictions in Newark and across the state. World Kindness Day Marked With Virtual Celebrations, Acts Of Kindness

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – Friday is World Kindness Day , and it’s being celebrated across the globe. Many would agree we need it more than ever this year. As CBS2’s Cindy Hsu reports, dancing is how many have celebrated World Kindness Day for nearly 20 years. This year, it’s gone virtual. It is celebrated worldwide on Nov. 13 and promotes the importance of being kind to each other. Karen Salmansohn has written dozens of books on happiness and kindness and says it’s as easy as listening. “Talk less, listen more. Put your phone away. Just a simple act of kindness, just really letting people know that you’re there for them,” she said. Food is another way to get that smile. “You could bake something for somebody, or here in New York, you could order up a delivery and surprise somebody with it,” Salmansohn said. When it comes to kids, we spend so much time making sure they’re behaving, Karen says it’s important to let them know when they’re doing the right thing. “Catch them being kind and to let them know that, wow, that’s great, I love that you just said that right now,” Salmansohn said. It’s also key to be kind to yourself. Take a break and do what makes you happy. Exercise and meditation can help clear your mind. Getting enough sleep is part of self-care. Before bed, making a list of three things you’re grateful about can help you focus on the positive. Kindness is something you can practice everyday. Everyone also loves to be appreciated, so making a habit of saying “thank you” is one of the greatest acts of kindness. Dangerous Long Island Grade Crossing Replaced As Part Of Years-Long Effort To Make LIRR Safer

WESTBURY, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) — A years-long effort to make the Long Island Rail Road safer reached a milestone Friday. One by one, grade crossings are being replaced to save lives. There was celebration as a new underpass replaced a dangerous grade crossing on School Street in Westbury. “We had to have it for the betterment of the community as a whole,” Westbury Deputy Mayor Steve Corte said. A community that’s seen too much death in recent years. Just 19 months ago, the School Street crossing was the scene of mangled metal and lost lives. The impact crushed the platform and injured passengers. “They see the warning signs, they hear the train, they do it anyway,” Corte said. A dangerous grade crossing on School Street in Westbury has been replaced by an underpass. (Credit: CBS2) In its place now is the fifth of eight new LIRR underpasses. It’s part of the Third Track Improvement Project to reduce congestion and delays and increase railroad capacity. The other three are set to be eliminated by 2022, saving lives and time. “Drivers are no longer to be forced to sit and wait for trains to pass. The gates are down in the peak hour for roughly a third of the time, so you can imagine the back-ups these grade crossings cause,” said Janno Lieber, president of MTA construction and development. RELATED STORY — Ribbon Cutting Marks 1st Of 5 LIRR Grade Crossings Turned Into Underpass It took six months to carve out the road under the tracks, but it has been decades in the making with six fatal crashes along the stretch in 10 years. The project is on time and under budget during the pandemic. “If you do it smart and you follow safety protocols, you can actually take advantage of the fact that there are fewer riders being disrupted,” New York State Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul said. “This will go down in history as something that was extraordinary.” It costs roughly $100 million to replace a single grade crossing with an underpass. Three hundred grade crossings, many of which are arguably as dangerous as School Street, remain with no plans or money to replace them. The MTA’s budget woes are not expected to impact the completion of the grade crossing plan with money already allocated.
