Corey Oswalt Snags 1st Big League Win As Mets Top Padres

NEW YORK (AP) — Rookie Corey Oswalt beat his hometown Padres for his first major league win, pitching three-hit ball over five innings as the New York Mets beat San Diego 6-4 Wednesday for their first series win in two months. A 24-year-old right-hander who made his big league debut in April, Oswalt took the mound hours after the Mets announced slugging outfielder Yoenis Cespedes will have operations to remove calcifications in both of his heels, surgeries that are expected to have a recovery time of at least 8-to-10 months. Oswalt (1-2) made his fifth big league start and sixth appearance. He allowed two runs and two walks while striking out four, leaving after 62 pitches. Since sweeping three games against Arizona from May 18-20, the Mets had lost 12 series and split five. The 17 straight series without a win was one short of the team record set in 1982. San Diego has have lost or split its last 11 series. The Mets and Padres have the two worst records in the National League. Clayton Richard (7-10) allowed six runs, five hits and two walks in five-plus innings. He retired his first 12 batters on just 36 pitches and carried a 2-0 lead into the fifth. Freddy Galvis grounded into a run-scoring double play in the first and Austin Hedges homered in the fifth. Jose Bautista walked leading off the fifth and scored on Kevin Plawecki’s one-out single. Phillip Evans, pinch-hitting for Oswalt, hit a tying single and Amed Rosario followed with a two-run single. Bautista chased Richard with a two-run homer in the sixth. Bautista’s 339th homer tied him for 99th place with Tino Martinez, Dave Parker and Boog Powell. Galvis hit a two-run homer in the seventh off Peterson. FREAKY FIFTH Mets centerfielder Brandon Nimmo initially robbed Hedges of his homer in the fifth, but the ball bounced off an M&M ad on the back wall beyond the fence and into Nimmo’s glove. After a video review, Hedges was given a homer. Richard followed with s second walk of the season and was forced at second when Travis Jankowski’s flare drop dropped in short right, and Bautista threw to second for the forceout. Jankowski was then picked off by Oswalt, and first baseman Wilmer Flores threw to Rosario as Jankowski was caught stealing at second, a call upheld on another video review. TRAINER’S ROOM Padres: RHP Jordan Lyles (forearm) allowed seven runs in three innings Tuesday night for Triple-A El Paso and has an ERA of 17.47 in two minor league injury rehabilitation starts. Mets: Cespedes has played just 119 games since the start of last season due to hamstring and hip injuries. UP NEXT Padres: RHP Luis Perdomo (1-6, 8.99 ERA) is scheduled to open a three-game series Friday at home against Arizona. Mets: LHP Steven Matz (4-8, 3.65 ERA) is slated to start Thursday’s opener of a four-game series at Pittsburgh.

NEW YORK (AP) — Jacob deGrom’s winless streak reached five games as the major league ERA leader was hurt by a pair of errors behind him, and the San Diego Padres beat the New York Mets 3-2 Monday night in a matchup of teams with the worst records in the National League. Rookie left-hander Joey Lucchesi (5-5), brought back from the minor leagues, baffled the Mets for the much of the evening with his churve, a combination curveball-chanegup at about 80 mph. Manuel Margot hit a go-ahead triple in a two-run fifth inning after right fielder Jose Bautista dropped Christian Villanueva’s fly ball. The Padres made it 3-1 in the sixth when Wil Myers doubled and scored when charging shortstop Amed Rosario let Eric Hosmer’s chopper get under his glove and bounce into the outfield. DeGrom (5-5), whose ERA rose from 1.68 to 1.71, allowed three runs — two earned — and five hits in eight innings, striking out 10 and walking two. He has given up three runs or fewer in 17 consecutive appearances and became the first pitcher to win fewer than seven games in his first 20 starts with an ERA below 2.00 since earned runs started being compiled in 1912, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. New York, just 40-57 despite an 11-1 start, dealt closer Jeurys Familia last weekend and is considering trading deGrom, who is eligible for free agency after the 2020 season. DeGrom’s agent said during the All-Star break he would prefer either a long-term contract or a trade. “We love him. We know what we have,” Mets assistant general manager John Ricco said. “He’s one of the top pitchers in the game, and in order to move him in a trade it would take an awful lot.” Second baseman Asdrubal Cabrera is likely to be dealt before the July 31 deadline for trades without waivers, and the impact of a losing record was clear at the box office. The game drew 21,731, the Mets’ smallest home crowd since April 4. San Diego, which is 42-61, had lost seven of eight and 23 of 30 coming in and also is retooling, dealing All-Star closer Brad Hand last week. Lucchesi has a herky-jerky windup in which the 25-year-old left-hander brings his hands high overhead, lowers them to his chest, pauses and only then rocks and throws. He made the crowd restless in the fourth, when he threw 10 pickoffs to first with Michael Conforto on base. Lucchesi ended the inning with a fine glove flip to first baseman Eric Hosmer to retire Jose Reyes on a slow roller. Lucchesi allowed two runs and six hits in 5 1/3 innings, struck out six and walked none. Kirby Yates pitched the ninth for his third save. Wilmer Flores’ RBI single put New York ahead in the third, and deGrom had thrown 37 pitches through the fourth and extended his scoreless streak to 15 2/3 innings. After reaching on Bautista’s error with one out in the fifth, Villanueva stole second and scored on Freddy Galvis’ single. New York closed to 3-2 in the sixth. Brandon Nimmo loaded the bases when Craig Stammen hit him with a pitch on the right knee and left ankle, the 16th time Nimmo has been plunked this season and third in two games. Reyes followed with a slow bouncer off the end of his bat to third for a run-scoring infield hit. DeGrom, who had thrown 80 pitches, grounded out to shortstop. CURIOUS When Myers nearly missed third base while running home in the sixth inning, the Mets waited for an indication from the video room rather than have deGrom throw to third and appeal. TRAINER’S ROOM Padres: RHP Colten Brewer was put on the 10-day DL, a day after straining his left oblique while pitching in the ninth inning of a doubleheader opener at Philadelphia. Mets: OF Yoenis Cespedes had an MRI and was examined by a specialist in an effort to determine whether he needs surgery on both feet that would sideline him for 8-to-10 months. … RHP Noah Syndergaard was placed on the 10-day DL, retroactive to Saturday, with hand-foot-and-mouth disease. The team recalled RHP Corey Oswalt from Triple-A Las Vegas, and he will start Wednesday against his hometown Padres. Maeda Stymies Padres As Dodgers Win 4-2, Move Closer In West

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Kenta Maeda pitched effectively into the sixth inning and Matt Kemp, Logan Forsythe and Chris Taylor each delivered an RBI single as the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the San Diego Padres 4-2 on Wednesday night. The surging Dodgers pulled within a half-game of NL West-leading Arizona with their 34th victory in 50 games. Maeda (6-5) won for the first since June 25 as the right-hander allowed a run and four hits over 5 2/3 innings. He had nine strikeouts and a walk to help the Dodgers defeat the Padres for the eighth time in 12 meetings this season. It was Maeda’s second start since coming off the paternity list and once again he was in control as the Padres had but one hit over his final three-plus innings of work. In his last nine starts, Maeda has a 1.97 ERA with 61 strikeouts in 50 1/3 innings. San Diego lost for the seventh time in 10 games. Taylor’s single scored Chase Utley, who was aboard on a pinch-hit double, for a 4-2 advantage in the eighth. Kenley Jansen pitched the ninth and overcame a leadoff walk to Wil Myers for his 25th save. San Diego cut its deficit to one in the seventh when rookie Christian Villanueva hit his 18th homer off reliever Daniel Hudson. Austin Hedges had two of the Padres’ five hits. Rookie lefty Joey Lucchesi (4-5) didn’t last past the fourth inning after throwing 91 pitches. He allowed three runs (two earned) and six hits while losing his second straight start. Los Angeles jumped ahead in the third as it parlayed four hits and an error into a three-run inning. Kemp’s sharp RBI single brought in Enrique Hernandez after his double. SAN DIEGO (AP) — Rookie left-hander Eric Lauer came within one out of his first career complete game before allowing Max Muncy’s home run, and Wil Myers homered for the sixth time in four games to lead the San Diego Padres over the Los Angeles Dodgers 4-1 on Tuesday night. Austin Hedges had a three-run shot for the Padres. Lauer (5-5) took a three-hit shutout into the ninth inning, facing the heart of the Dodgers’ order after having thrown 101 pitches. He got Enrique Hernandez to fly out to center and Justin Turner to fly out to deep left before Muncy drove a 1-1 pitch into the seats in left, his 21st. After throwing 115 pitches, Lauer made way for Kirby Yates, who struck out All-Star Matt Kemp to end it. Kemp struck out four times. Lauer struck out a career-high eight and walked two in winning consecutive starts for the first time. Myers, who has played in only 28 games this season due to injuries, has heated up after a second stint on the disabled list. He hit three home runs Saturday in a 20-5 loss at Arizona, hit another in the 16th inning on Sunday to give the Padres a 4-3 win over the Diamondbacks, and then homered in the ninth inning of an 8-2 loss to Clayton Kershaw and the Dodgers on Monday night. His homer Tuesday night, to left-center on a 2-1 pitch off Rich Hill (2-4), was his eighth overall. Hedges hit his fourth of the season earlier in the inning, off the Western Metal Supply Co. brick warehouse in the left field corner at Petco Park on a 1-2 pitch. SAN DIEGO (AP) — Clayton Kershaw pitched six shutout innings, and Cody Bellinger and Justin Turner each had three hits as the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the San Diego Padres 8-2 on Monday night. Kershaw (3-4) improved his career mark to 18-6 against the Padres as the Dodgers moved a half-game behind the idle Arizona Diamondbacks for the National League West lead. Los Angeles won for the 33rd time in 48 contests. Luis Perdomo (1-3) gave up six runs, 10 hits and three walks — one intentional — over seven innings in his second start since being recalled from Triple-A El Paso. The Padres were handcuffed by Kershaw as they managed but a pair of singles and a walk against the Dodgers’ ace. Kershaw was sharp from the onset, recording his five strikeouts in the first four innings. San Diego never had two baserunners aboard in the same inning and had just one in scoring position during his outing. The Padres, who got a home run from Wil Myers in the ninth, lost for the sixth time in eight games. It was Myers’ fifth homer in three games. Kershaw, who has had two stints on the disabled list this year, won his second straight start in throwing 89 pitches, his most since May 1. Monday’s impressive outing gave Kershaw his first road win of the season and came on the heels of him tossing six innings in a win over the Pirates. The Dodgers broke the game open in the fourth inning, scoring five runs after sending eight batters to the plate. Bellinger opened with an opposite-field double, Matt Kemp walked and Yasmani Grandal hit a double to drive in Bellinger. Chris Taylor’s RBI single made it 2-0 and Andrew Toles stroked a two-run double off the base of the left-field fence. Toles, called up from Triple-A Oklahoma City before the game with Yasiel Puig (oblique) going on the disabled list, scored from third on Joc Pederson’s grounder to stalk Kershaw to a 5-0 lead Perdomo wiggled from a jam in the second as the Dodgers had two singles, a double and a walk.
