CORONA (CBSLA) – A wildfire erupted Thursday near the entrance to a popular hiking spot in Corona and quickly grew to as large as 75 acres, authorities said. The fire was reported at 1:20 p.m. in the Cleveland National Forest along Tin Mine Canyon off of Skyline Drive, according to fire officials. No homes have burned but more than 150 homes in the Orchard Glen community have been evacuated as airplanes drop retardant to keep flames from running down hillsides toward homes. Smoke could be seen from the Riverside (91) Freeway to the north and Interstate 15 to the east, prompting several calls to the California Highway Patrol. Evacuations were issued for the following roadways: Trudy Way, Folson Circle, Brannon Circle, Burrero Way, Rawley Street, Burnett Circle, Elker Road, Corbett Street, Gareth Circle, and Fanning Circle. One homeowner who had already been through the last big brush fire in Corona told CBS2’s Nicole Comstock he’s got his evacuation procedure down to a science. “Last time, we literally packed almost half the house in 45 minutes,” he said. “We got it down to about one suitcase.” Homeowner evacuating his Corona house with with dogs in tow. #SkylineFire burning not too far away. @CBSLA #KCAL9 pic.twitter.com/u6w1pb5QBf — Nicole Comstock (@ComstockNEWS) July 20, 2018 An evacuation center has been set up at Corona High School, 1150 W. 10th St. No injuries have been reported. NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Birds are coming to Broadway , but the wooden statues won’t sing, rather inform. For the last four months, Nicolas Holiber has used reclaimed and recycled wood to build bird statues. The goal is to install 12 of them in Upper Manhattan and bring awareness to how real life birds are impacted by climate change. “For me, this is a great environmental message… Combining of two amazing things: art and conservation,” said artist Nicholas Holiber. The Brooklyn artist has partnered with the Broadway Mall Association and the organization, New York City Audubon. He is using money from a Kick-Starter campaign to fuel his “Birds on Broadway” project. Holiber says each statue represents a bird that is either native to New York City or passes through on their migration routes. “They all are part of a group of over 300 North American species… that are in peril or face threats due to climate change,” he said. The nearly nine-foot tall birds are expected to land on Broadway April, 2019. They will take over Broadway, every 10 blocks or so, from W 64th St. to W 166th St. “Art brings people together,” said Holiber’s assistant Bishop Mcindoe. “It makes people put aside their ego and settle their differences.” Each statue will explain the problems these birds face and what help they need. Some New Yorkers are already looking forward to learning about this. “I don’t think too many people are aware of what’s going on,” said Upper West Side resident Mizunay Symesom. “I think it’s important for the next generation to actually see it,” said Upper West Side resident Peter Miranda. Holiber says he doesn’t plan on water proofing his creations — so New Yorkers can see the wear and tear from the weather. “Seeing that change and thinking maybe about what’s going on,” said Holiber. The organization Big Reuse has donated the wood that’s left over from the city’s demolition and remodel projects. The birds will be up for eight months.

HOLLYWOOD HEIGHTS (CBSLA) – If you’re planning to attend Seal’s concert at the Hollywood Bowl Wednesday night, you’ll want to be aware of new neighborhood street closures. Beginning Wednesday, the city of Los Angeles will begin testing street closures around the Hollywood Bowl which are designed to ease traffic congestion in the area. The Los Angeles City Council approved a resolution last month to test the closures on four separate nights this summer, according to a letter posted to residents on the Nextdoor app from Councilman David Ryu. The closures will take place between 5 p.m. and 10 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 5, Aug. 9 and Sept. 10. During those periods, North Highland Avenue will be closed to vehicles from the intersection with Camrose and Milner drives, up to the Hollywood Bowl. The closure will also apply to residents, who will have to access their neighborhoods through Franklin Avenue. “The Hollywood Bowl graciously stepped up to assist in enforcement of these closures,” Ryu wrote. Several other entry points into the neighborhood will be closed to concertgoers and will require resident placards to get through. Getting to the Hollywood Bowl has always posed a challenge due to its location in a residential neighborhood right off the 101 Freeway. “We walk to the concerts all the time, we hear the concerts all the time, it’s a lovely place to live,” resident Chuck Neddermeyer told CBS2. “But the traffic has just made it kind of a nightmare. “ Residents tell CBS2 they feel trapped in their homes. “Since the advent of Ways, and those other sites where you can find the best traffic route, it’s been horrendous,” Ron Scardera said. “We have to plan our exits and entrance routes during the Hollywood Bowl season,” Neddermeyer added. There are several alternatives to driving directly to Hollywood Bowl , which is not advised. There are park and ride options for Metro stops throughout the city which can be purchased beforehand. There is also a shuttle for only $6 roundtrip which runs from four nearby locations and can also be bought before your event.

SANTA PAULA (CBSLA) — Police have arrested a man walking the streets with a sword, an open container and a concealed firearm in Santa Paula. Santa Paula police officers responded to the 600 block of Center Ln. shortly before 10:30 p.m. Saturday following a report of a male individual dressed in black and walking the streets with a sword. Upon arrival, officers were assisted by citizens in the area to locate the suspect, who was found walking along the north sidewalk of Center Ln. The suspect is identified as 29-year-old Ricardo Vargas,. As officers made contact with the suspect, they determined he was carrying a sword approximately three feet in length and an open container of beer. “Vargas became uncooperative with officer’s verbal commands and did not initially comply with their instructions,” police stated in a press release. “Only after the officers continued to give instructions did the suspect eventually drop the sword and revolver safely to the ground.” The suspect complied following the incident and was taken into custody, police stated. Vargas was arrested for possession of a concealed firearm.

UNION CITY, N.J. (CBSNewYork) — Three children were killed and several other people were injured when a fire ripped through a home Friday morning in Union City, New Jersey. The flames broke out just before 9 a.m. Friday at the multi-family home on 25th Street. “The fire went to five alarms with extensive heat, our firefighters operated judiciously, and we got the fire under control,” North Hudson Deputy Fire Chief Nick Gazzillo said. Two-year-old Jason Gonzalez and his 7-year-old brother Christian were killed in the blaze, along with their 5-year-old cousin Mailyn Wood, CBS2’s Jessica Layton reported. Late Friday night, officials said two other children remained in critical condition, as well as one woman. A man was listed in stable condition. Two dozen firefighters were injured — six were hospitalized and 18 were treated on the scene. “I just came close to the building, I tried to help them. You know, like knock on the doors… I went to the second floor, tried to help them to people came out,” neighbor Eudes Hernandez told CBS2’s Clark Fouraker. “It was two ladders. Once they climbed up and they went inside, everybody just started screaming frantically,” said neighbor Eddie Miranda. “All of them were unconscious. One’s face appeared to be burned. They took out a lady, her hair was burned, both of her arms were burned.” The Red Cross is assisting the roughly 30 people displaced by the fire. “I am heart broken,” Union City Mayor Brian P. Stack said in a statement. “It is a very difficult day for Union City. I continue to pray for the victims and their families and offer any resources I can to assist them. I am extremely thankful for the efforts of our first responders who gave their all under extremely difficult circumstances.” “I wish I could’ve done something,” said Miranda. “My heart goes out to the family, my heart goes out to the first responders. They did everything they could, but I guess it’s unfortunate that time wasn’t on their side.” The cause of the fire is under investigation.

(CBS News) — President Trump took a confrontational stance with America’s allies at the North Atlantic Treaty Organization summit Wednesday in Belgium, demanding allies double their upcoming commitment to defense spending and slamming Germany for getting gas from Russia. The criticisms of America’s allies come days before Mr. Trump is slated to meet with Russia’s Vladimir Putin — whom he often says he wants to get along with — in Helsinki, Finland. Mr. Trump on Wednesday said he wants ally nations to spend 4 percent of GDP on defense, double the 2 percent NATO members have committed to paying by 2025. Not even the U.S. pays that much, according to NATO, which says the U.S. paid 3.57 percent of GDP towards defense in 2017 . It will spend 3.5 percent of GDP in 2018. Germany spends 1.24 percent of GDP on defense. “What good is NATO if Germany is paying Russia billions of dollars for gas and energy?” Mr. Trump tweeted Wednesday. “Why are there only 5 out of 29 countries that have met their commitment? The U.S. is paying for Europe’s protection, then loses billions on Trade. Must pay 2% of GDP IMMEDIATELY, not by 2025.” What good is NATO if Germany is paying Russia billions of dollars for gas and energy? Trump (@realDonaldTrump) July 11, 2018 The president’s tweet about Germany came after he had what he described as a “great meeting” with German Chancellor Angela Merkel. Mr. Trump has long blasted Germany over its defense spending levels and a Russian oil pipeline. Ahead of the meeting, Mr. Trump claimed the pipeline project has made Germany “controlled” by and “captive to Russia.” The president reiterated his sentiment in the early hours of Thursday morning in Brussels. Billions of additional dollars are being spent by NATO countries since my visit last year, at my request, but it isn’t nearly enough. U.S. spends too much. Europe’s borders are BAD! Pipeline dollars to Russia are not acceptable! — Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) July 11, 2018 The president’s approach to NATO contrasts greatly with that of his own Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo. Pompeo described NATO as the “most successful alliance in history,” praising the commitment of allies. “. @ NATO is the most successful alliance in history,” he tweeted Wednesday. “All # NATO allies have committed to extending this success through increased defense spending, deterrence and defense, and fighting terrorism. Weakness provokes; strength and cohesion protects. This remains our bedrock belief.” . @NATO is the most successful alliance in history. NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — It may be summer, but a March winter storm still has many Queens homeowners at their wit’s end with the city. They say they’ve been waiting more than four months for the city to fix damaged sidewalks in front of their homes. Damaged sidewalks in Queens that residents say haven’t been fixed since March. (credit: Senator Tony Avella) One homeowner said never in his wildest dreams did he think he’d be dealing with this dangerous problem into July, but he is, and he’s not alone. The huge slabs of concrete look like they belong at a construction site. Instead, the slabs are at the corner of 32nd Avenue and 168th Street in North Flushing. Residents say the sidewalk has been destroyed since March when the city removed the trees damaged by winter storms, but never fixed the sidewalk. “It just lets us know that we’ve been forgotten in this neighborhood,” said resident Kathleen Reilly. In nearby Beechhurst a huge chunk of the Vigliotti’s front sidewalk on 14th Avenue is literally on their front lawn. They say it’s been like this since that same storm some four months ago. “It’s frustrating, very very frustrating, especially with all the kids, and there’s a big park right here, we’re close to the water, and people are always coming and walking down this street over here,” said resident Mike Vigliotti. It’s a similar scene at the intersection of 13th and 14th Avenues and also in front of Pat Dimaio’s home on Cryders Lane. “It’s kind of hazardous and the city is not doing their job,” said Dimaio. Queens State Senator Tony Avella said all these trees were not on private property, but on city property along the road, so the city Parks Department is responsible. “The only response I got after I complained, complained, complained was, ‘well, we’re seeing if we can work with other agencies to fix this’, and even that was months ago,” said Avella. So we called parks trying to get some answers and told them about the sidewalks destroyed in multiple locations. A representative asked to us email them the spots and they would look into the problem. “To let it go for 4-5 months is shameful,” said Avella. There are more than 100 of those sites citywide, with the majority located in Queens. The parks department says due to the number of sites and the nature of the construction, they’ve enlisted the city’s Department of Design and Construction to help address repairs. It wasn’t immediately clear when repairs would be completed.

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – The last of the fire chiefs who responded to the disaster at the Twin Towers on Tuesday, September 11, 2001 is retiring from the FDNY. But as CBS2’s Hazel Sanchez reports, that doesn’t mean his work is over. Joseph Pfeifer was the first FDNY chief to enter the World Trade Center on September 11th and now the last 9/11 chief to walk away from his career after 37 years of service. He was 45 years old and chief of Battalion 1 in Lower Manhattan when terrorists struck the Twin Towers. “That day, I saw the first plane aim and crash into the World Trade Center and I knew this was a terrorist attack,” he told Sanchez. Joseph Pfeifer was the first FDNY chief to enter the World Trade Center on September 11th and now the last 9/11 chief to walk away from his career after 37 years of service. (CBS2) He anchored the command post in the North Tower, advising his fire lieutenant brother Kevin Pfiefer before Kevin joined the rescue mission with 343 other firefighters who lost their lives. “Everyone that responded that day saw that thousands of people were in the greatest moment of need, and we went in to make a difference in their lives,” he said. Pfiefer said the unthinkable loss at Ground Zero has served as a foundation to drive him forward. Over the last 17 years, he’s utilized his experience to prepare others for possible terror attacks in the future. He created the FDNY Center for Terrorism and Disaster Preparedness. On Wednesday, he spoke to a group of first responders about vertical terrorism awareness – how to protect high-rises and tall structures. “What we’re really about this week is taking traumatic memories and turning them into hope,” he said. The 62-year-old married father of a grown daughter and son said he will eventually slow down, as much as his 4-year-old granddaughter will let him. “Already I’m chasing her around,” he said. Pfiefer will now go from firefighter to teacher, sharing his expertise on disaster preparedness at Harvard and Columbia universities.
