A group of British museums have begun a multimillion dollar campaign to keep thousands of items salvaged from the Titanic from falling into private hands at a bankruptcy auction. The effort is backed by filmmaker James Cameron and Robert Ballard, who discovered the sunken wreck on the Atlantic floor in 1985. Charlie D’Agata reports.

By Giorgio Panetta CBS2 Chief Meteorologist/Weather Producer We are starting out this morning muggy & wet. Strong, southerly flow continues to dominate. Today there will be more widespread and stronger storms that move through the area. This will add quite a bit of rain to our monthly total. Cloudy skies and the rain will cause temperatures not to rise that much. We started out with a warm & humid morning low in the mid 70s but we will only get up to about 79 by this afternoon. CBS2 Today looks to be the wettest day of the week. The rain will continue tomorrow but there will be more breaks. It will start to clear out Friday, just in time for the weekend! CBS2 Humidity will continue to be high and won’t let up for a while. Try and stay dry. Don’t forget the umbrella!

COSTA MESA (CBSLA) — Thieves hit an Apple Store in Costa Mesa on Monday night, making off with expensive electronics. Security video shows a group of men running into the Apple Store. Seconds later they begin ripping iPads and iPhones off the tables and running without any weapons. “I don’t understand how you could just swipe $30,000 worth of iPhones. There are so many people in the store,” said shopper Brandon Garcia. But stunned shoppers barely had time to react. “It’s surprising they were able to pull something like that off,” said shopper Chris Neal. The group of men, believed to be in their twenties, ran out with nearly $30,000 in electronics. The security tape shows an off duty police officer in the front of the store scuffling with the robbers, even getting kicked on the ground as he tried to stop them. Seconds later, another camera at South Coast Plaza captured the young men running from the Apple Store. This isn’t the first robbery like it. Recently, across the state a similar group of young men ran into other Apple stores and stole thousands in electronics without ever showing a weapon. “You kind have to watch your back everywhere you go,” said shopper Kristen Hiller. “It doesn’t matter. Watch your back.”

STUDIO CITY (CBSLA) — Donald Trump has signed into law a bill naming a post office in South Los Angeles after the late R&B singer Marvin Gaye. The post office located at 3585 S. Vermont Ave. — just across the street from the University of Southern California — will be named after the two-time Grammy-winning singer famous for hits like “What’s Going On,” “How Sweet It Is” and “Sexual Healing.” “Marvin Gaye’s music has transcended generations and gave the ’70s and ’80s a sound,” Democratic Rep. Karen Bass (CA-37) said Tuesday. She introduced HR 1496 in 2017. Gaye was born in Washington D.C. but lived in L.A.’s West Adams neighborhood until his death in 1984. Infamously, he was shot and killed by his father during a family altercation. The Motown singer made headlines posthumously when his family was awarded $7.4 million in a lawsuit claiming singer Robin Thicke and rapper Pharrell Williams lifted parts of Gaye’s song “Got To Give It Up” for their 2013 hit “Blurred Lines.” A judge later reduced the amount to $5.3 million.
