(CBS Local)– Harvard’s student-run newspaper, The Crimson, is reporting one of the university’s sororities is ending the female-only Greek life tradition by becoming gender-neutral. Harvard’s chapter of the all-female sorority Kappa Alpha Theta will rebrand itself as as a gender-neutral “social group,” called “Theta Zeta Xi.” The soon-to-be former sorority will disaffiliate from its national organization in the fall of 2018, the club announced Monday, according to The Crimson. The announcement comes at the heels of a decision by Harvard to crack down on single-gender social clubs. Penalties imposed by the university in 2017 ban members of single-gender clubs and Greek organizations from holding student group leadership positions, becoming varsity athletic team captains and from receiving college endorsement for prestigious fellowships, The Crimson says. The Crimson reports that a statement was issued by Kappa Alpha Theta defending the decision as an “act of good faith.” Theta members voted unanimously to go co-ed, according to the statement. The sorority previously took a different stance. Last year, after Harvard administration voted to adopt the sanctions on single-gender clubs, the group released a statement pledging to continue its tradition of allowing only women to be the members, the Boston Globe reported.

EL SEGUNDO (AP) — Mattel, hurt by the closing of Toys ‘R’ Us stores, said Wednesday that it will cut more than 2,200 jobs as the maker of Barbie dolls and Hot Wheels cars seeks to save money. Like other toy companies, Mattel has lost sales as Toys ‘R’ Us faltered. The toy retailer filed for bankruptcy protection last year, announced it was liquidating its business in March and then closed all its stores last month. Mattel rival Hasbro, however, reported better-than-expected second-quarter financial results earlier this week, a sign that the maker of Monopoly and Play-Doh is rebounding from the demise of Toys ‘R’ Us. A Mattel spokesman said the job cuts will affect mainly its office workers worldwide and are part of the company’s efforts to slash at least $650 million in costs. Mattel, which is based in El Segundo has about 28,000 employees. Mattel Inc.’s stock fell nearly 9 percent to $14.85 in after-hours trading Wednesday, after dropping 1 percent during the regular trading day. The company had other bad news: Its financial results between April are June were worse than what Wall Street analysts had expected. It posted a loss of $240.9 million, or 70 cents per share, in the second quarter. Losses, adjusted for one-time gains and costs, were 56 cents per share, far larger than the loss of 32 cents per share analysts expected, according to Zacks Investment Research. Revenue fell 14 percent to $840.7 million, below the $863.1 million analysts expected. There were some bright spots: Barbie and Hot Wheels sales rose, even as Toys ‘R’ Us shuttered its doors. Other brands didn’t fare as well. Sales of its American Girl dolls fell, as did sales in its Fisher-Price brand. Ynon Kreiz, who was named CEO in April, said Wednesday that he expects the negative impact of Toys ‘R’ Us to subside by next year. Mattel, he said, is working closely with other retailers and looking for more ways to sell its toys online. “Mattel is a company with great potential,” Kreiz said in a conference call. LOS ANGELES (AP) — A Los Angeles judge ordered a man accused of stealing Frances McDormand’s best actress Oscar statuette to stand trial on a felony grand theft charge. Superior Court Judge Mark Hanasono said Wednesday that there was sufficient evidence for Terry Bryant to stand trial. The ruling came after a hearing in which a worker with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences testified about taking the Oscar away from Bryant as he tried to leave the ceremony’s official after-party. “God is on my side,” Bryant, 47, was heard saying in court after the ruling. Bryant is due to be arraigned Aug. 8. McDormand won the award for best actress in “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” and lost the statuette after having it engraved at the post-ceremony Governors Ball. Cesario Tio, a film academy worker who was escorting a photographer taking pictures at the ball, said he heard on a walkie-talkie that McDormand’s Oscar was missing. He said he later saw a man, who he identified in court as Bryant, walk out of the ball holding a statuette and yelling “We did it! We did it.” Tio said neither he nor the photographer recognized the man. The photographer took a picture of Bryant, who told them his statuette was won for best producer on “Get Out,” which Tio said he immediately knew wasn’t an award. A blown up image from the photographer’s camera showed a portion of McDormand’s name. Tio said he then grabbed the statuette from Bryant. “He said, ‘Hey, I’m holding that for a friend,’” Tio testified. He said Bryant followed him back into the Governors Ball, where Tio handed the statuette off to security and he didn’t see Bryant again. Bryant remains released on his own recognizance. His attorney, Daniel Brookman, argued in court that Bryant didn’t try to hide that he had McDormand’s Oscar, and the charge should be dismissed. “There was never any intent to deprive the owner of the property on a permanent basis,” Brookman said. The attorney also said McDormand did not want Bryant to be prosecuted and displayed a police detective’s report that said the actress “stated she is not desirous of prosecution.” Hanasono did not allow the police report to be entered into evidence. McDormand did not attend Wednesday’s hearing. Much of the hearing focused on the value of the Oscar statuette, which a lawyer for the academy said cost the organization between $2,300 and $2,500 for it to purchase. The lawyer said the award was actually probably priceless to most winners, and noted that winners could not sell them on the open market or give them away to anyone but their heirs.
