NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork ) — New Jersey may be close to ordering new restrictions due to the coronavirus pandemic. On Thursday, Gov. Phil Murphy warned he may be forced to take action, following a surge in cases and hospitalizations, CBS2’s Jessica Layton reported. The positivity rate has soared to over 7%. When it comes to new infections, the state hasn’t seen numbers like this in more than six months. In fact, University Hospital in Newark still has tents set up from screening in the early days of the pandemic. It says it is ready to use them again, if necessary. “Jessica, we have still at least five to 10 people being admitted a day with the disease,” Dr. Shereef Elnahal said. “We’re really on the cusp of getting to a bad place in our hospitals, which ends up being a risk to everybody.” Elnahal heads the hospital and said the number of beds needed for COVID-19 patients tripled in less than two weeks. In fact, Newark is considered one of New Jersey’s most concerning hot spots. The positivity rate is a whopping 12.3%. The city is in Essex County, which, along with Bergen and Passaic counties, each reported more than 200 new cases Thursday. “Do we want to be where we were in the spring? Do we want to have to see nonessential businesses close?” Elnahal said. It’s a huge blow, considering not that long ago the state was priding itself on how it cracked the curve. The spike could lead to restrictions for already struggling businesses. “This virus has not taken a break and we cannot, either. Pandemic fatigue is a real threat to containing COVID-19,” New Jersey Health Commissioner Judy Persichilli said. “How close are we to do something? Close, so bear with us. We will clearly be taking action. And I hope it will be action that balances all the various challenges and interests that we have,” Murphy said. Doctors have learned so much about treating people with COVID-19, so they say one bright spot is patients don’t seem to be getting as sick and their hospital stays have been shorter, on average three to four days versus a week or more back in the spring and summer. NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) — Authorities say two robbery suspects have been arrested after a church van being chased by police crash into a NJ TRANSIT bus. Officials say the two suspects were being pursued following a crime spree involving three different vehicles, including the church van, in Newark. Police say two masked suspects had robbed two people at gunpoint within five minutes of each other in Newark around 11:30 p.m. Thursday. Police said a third robbery involving the church van happened around 1:15 a.m. Friday. Shortly after, Maplewood police spotted the van and chased the vehicle back into Newark. During the pursuit, a Maplewood patrol car crashed into another vehicle near the intersection of Colgate and Broom, but no one was seriously hurt. The Essex County Sheriff’s Department continued the pursuit. That’s when police said the van crashed into a NJ TRANSIT bus near Springfield Avenue and S. 17th Street in Newark. The bus and the van ended up on the property of the United House of Prayer For All People. “I came outside and I heard a boom and there were several passenger getting out of this van and the NJ TRANSIT bus,” neighbor Thomas Judd told CBS2’s Jenna DeAngelis. “Newark police was on the scene very fast.” The driver and nine passengers on the bus were not seriously injured. Police said the two suspects were arrested and a weapon was also recovered at the scene. (© Copyright 2018 CBS Broadcasting Inc. All Rights Reserved. The Associated Press contributed to this report.)

‘It Was Terrifying:’ Newark Police Revive Toddler Found Unresponsive In Swimming Pool
NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) — Police officers say their training kicked in when they resuscitated a 2-year-old girl who was found unresponsive in a swimming pool in Newark. It happened Sunday afternoon at a home on Third Avenue East, where cops say the little girl was in a small pool wearing two floatation toys and being watched by a family friend. Suddenly, she flipped over and couldn’t lift her head out of the water. Police body cam video shows Newark officers hitting the child on her back as she struggled to breathe on Sunday afternoon. “It was terrifying, absolutely terrifying,” Officer Malikul Aziz said. The dramatic video shows the officers quickly yet calmly getting to work. They were able to clear the girl’s airway before she then threw up food and water, police said. “As my partner mentioned it could have been death,” Officer Shaquille Johnson said. Her full-throated cries were a sign that she was breathing again. “It was a great moment,” Aziz said. “Especially when we knew she was able to breathe comfortably, we knew that we were able to breathe as well too.” The girl was taken to the hospital, where she was treated and released. “These Officers displayed the character and dedication that every Newark Police Division member is committed to in providing outstanding community service,” Newark Public Safety Director Anthony Ambrose said in a statement. “I am proud that these Officers stepped in as if this child was a member of their own family. Today, I speak for the entire City of Newark in giving them our most sincere thanks.” Though they performed like seasoned veterans, Officers Johnson and Aziz are rookies. They both graduated the police academy just seven months ago. (© Copyright 2018 CBS Broadcasting Inc. All Rights Reserved. The Associated Press contributed to this report.)
