CALVERTON, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) – More and more chickens are making their homes in suburban backyards. As CBS2’s Jennifer McLogan reports, many Long Islanders want them because they eat ticks . She found the Raschdorf family, of St. James, shopping at a poultry farm Thursday. “We’re picking up chickens to bring to our school,” son, Eric, said. “We have chickens at home, but we’re starting a coop at his elementary school,” mom, Lisa, added. Suddenly, chickens are all the rage. “It’s hard to keep up with demand. We do thousands and thousands of animals here every season,” said Long Island poultry farmer Wayne Meyer. He left the world of sports to become a poultry farmer. “It’s been a passion for a while. Everybody wants fresh eggs, everybody wants the natural fertilizer that the chickens give off. They’re bug eaters, they eat ticks,” he said. Meyer raises them from hatchlings until motherhood, under the watchful eye of a possessive rooster. His farm has more than a dozen varieties, but all of them love to eat ticks. According to the Cornell Cooperative Extension, chickens, guinea fowl and quail can help reduce tick populations. Ticks are not especially fast movers, so chicks comp on them, helping to control diseases, viruses and bacteria spread by the pests. “Within a couple of weeks, we realized, ‘hey, it’s funny, we’re not seeing any ticks. Our do wasn’t gnawing on his paws trying to get the ticks off.’ We’re like, ‘wow,’ and they we realized they’re eating the ticks,” said homeowner Christopher Paparo, whose family dog, Bullet, is also a fan of the chickens roaming in their fenced-in backyard. His local ordinance allows six hens, and other suburban communities are relaxing codes to allow small coops. “We’re keeping them as permanent residents here at our house,” he said. With six chickens for $40 and low maintenance costs, Paparo called it an investment in health. Local codes for coop cleanliness are strict. Hens, coops and yards must be registered and inspected.

PALO ALTO, Calif. (CBSLocal) – A teenager is in serious trouble after going on a bizarre crime spree when his phone reportedly ran out of data. The 17-year-old suspect from Palo Alto was arrested after allegedly breaking into an area home, waking up a sleeping couple, and asking them to give him their WiFi password. “The male victim got out of bed, confronted the suspect, and pushed him down the hallway and out the front door of the house before calling police. No one was injured,” Pal Alto police said in a news release . The couple – both reportedly in their 60s – told officers that two kitchen knives went missing from their home during the teen’s alleged break-in, however police didn’t find any weapons on the suspected burglar when he was caught. According to authorities, the teen’s crime wave allegedly started a day earlier on July 21. The teen is believed to be the same person who came up to the window of a different home and asked a woman inside for her Wifi password. The teen reportedly claimed his phone was out of data. When the woman and another teen in the home ordered the suspect to leave their property, he allegedly fled on one of the their bikes. Officers say they found the stolen bike near the same location where the suspected WiFi-seeking crook was stopped by police. According to the release, “officers returned the bicycle to the victim and are recommending that the District Attorney’s Office add a charge of misdemeanor petty theft against the suspect.” The suspect – who was not publicly identified because he’s a minor – was taken to Santa Clara County Juvenile Hall and is facing a felony charge of burglary. He’s also been charged with prowling and providing false information to an officer, both misdemeanors.

LARCHMONT VILLAGE (CBSLA) — The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power says they might need to take drastic measures to fix the city’s old and crumbling power system. And by drastic, they mean months of outages and forced blackouts and closing business streets during rush hour. KCAL9’s Suzanne Marques reported from Larchmont Village Wednesday night where some residents said they’ve had enough of their share of power outages. The residents say they’ve had to deal with no electricity and no AC during our heat waves — they’re hot, they have spoiled food and patience is wearing thin in triple-digit heat. Larchmont Village has had several power outages as have Beverly Glen, Mid-City and Windsor Square. And they say they’ve been dealing with the outages for years. The latest outage in Larchmont Village last three days. “It was really difficult for us, we’re expecting, it was 107 degrees, we really couldn’t stay in the house, we had to go out and get a hotel,” says Carri Brown. Once the summer and these heat waves pass, the LAWDP says they have a plan to try something new — planned outages to fix the power grid and outdated infrastructure. The LADWP raised rates a few years ago, and says it now wants to put that money to good use, this fall or winter, to make the fixes. “When we had those big rain storms last year, they said they were doing transformers in the alley and they shut us down for a few hours, they said all that was done thumbs up,” says Steve Cohen, owner of Village Pizzeria. Cohen says despite past promises, the power failures always happen again. “I’ve been here 21 years, we’ve had power failures at least one or two a year, for the length of time I’ve been here,” Cohen says. LADWP says, this time it would be different. Planned power outages in neighborhoods, with a heads up a few days before. outages lasting 5-6 hours at a time while they worked in the ground, in neighborhoods without visible power lines. But places with underground cables they’d have to dig up and repair, which takes extra time and work “I feel like everybody would support that,” says Brown ,”because all anybody’s been talking about is updating the grid and feeling the frustration of not having the grid updated. So if we knew in advance, we could plan everything, it would absolutely be worth it.” The work in some neighborhoods would take months, and there would be road closures, because they would have to dig into the ground or people’s backyards. But they say the planned outages would happen when power use is low, like during work or school hours in neighborhoods, and on the weekends in places that are busy during the week like downtown LA.

WASHINGTON (AP) — A group of 11 House Republicans has introduced articles of impeachment against Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who oversees special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian election interference and President Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign. The Republicans who introduced the resolution have criticized Rosenstein for not being responsive enough as they have requested documents related to the Russia investigation and a closed investigation into Democrat Hillary Clinton’s emails. It is unclear whether there will be enough support in the party to pass it, as Republican leaders have not signed on to the effort. The articles were introduced by North Carolina Rep. Mark Meadows and Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan, frequent critics of the Justice Department. The introduction does not trigger an immediate vote, but Meadows and Jordan could make procedural moves on the House floor that could force a vote late this week or when the House returns from its upcoming five-week recess in September. The House is scheduled to leave for that recess Thursday. The move came about two hours after GOP lawmakers met with Justice Department officials who have been working to provide documents to several congressional committees about decisions made during the 2016 presidential campaign. The department has provided lawmakers with more than 800,000 documents, but Meadows said after the meeting that there was still “frustration” with how Justice has handled the oversight requests. Republican leaders, however, have said in recent weeks that they are satisfied with the Justice Department’s progress. House Oversight and Government Reform Chairman Trey Gowdy said after the meeting that he was pleased with the department’s efforts and wouldn’t support Rosenstein’s impeachment. House Speaker Paul Ryan has also said he is satisfied with progress on the document production. Democrats have criticized Republican efforts to pressure the Justice Department in recent months, saying they are attempts to undermine Mueller’s investigation. CORONA (CBSLA) – A wildfire erupted Thursday near the entrance to a popular hiking spot in Corona and quickly grew to as large as 250 acres, authorities said. It was at 5 percent containment by the evening. The fire was reported at 1:20 p.m. in the Cleveland National Forest along Tin Mine Canyon off of Skyline Drive, according to fire officials. No homes have burned but more than 150 homes in the Orchard Glen community have been evacuated as airplanes drop retardant to keep flames from running down hillsides toward homes. Smoke could be seen from the Riverside (91) Freeway to the north and Interstate 15 to the east, prompting several calls to the California Highway Patrol. Evacuations were issued for the following roadways: Trudy Way, Folson Circle, Brannon Circle, Burrero Way, Rawley Street, Burnett Circle, Elker Road, Corbett Street, Gareth Circle, and Fanning Circle. One homeowner who had already been through the last big brush fire in Corona told CBS2’s Nicole Comstock he’s got his evacuation procedure down to a science. “Last time, we literally packed almost half the house in 45 minutes,” he said. “We got it down to about one suitcase.” Homeowner evacuating his Corona house with with dogs in tow. #SkylineFire burning not too far away. @CBSLA #KCAL9 pic.twitter.com/u6w1pb5QBf — Nicole Comstock (@ComstockNEWS) July 20, 2018 “Last time we evacuated, nothing happened, but you just never know […] it wasn’t this close, either,” said resident Tawny Perry. “There’s a little bit of sadness ’cause you don’t know what you’re gonna come home to considering how close it is,” David Ortega said. An evacuation center has been set up at Corona High School, 1150 W. 10th St. No injuries have been reported. There was no immediate word on the cause of the fire.

ODESSA, Texas (CBS Local) – A Saltgrass Steak House in Texas has banned a customer after they didn’t leave a tip on a $108 bill and wrote “We don’t Tip Terrorist” on the check. The customer also circled the server’s name, Khalil, according to the Odessa American . Khalil Cavil posted what happened on July 14 on Facebook. “I was sick to my stomach,” the 20-year-old server said in his post. “I share this because I want people to understand that this racism, and this hatred still exists. Although, this is nothing new, it is still something that will test your faith. All day I’ve had to remind myself that Jesus died for these people too. I have decided to let this encourage me, and fuel me to change the world the only way I know how.” Cavil, an Odessa resident, is preparing to attend college in Dallas later this year according to the Odessa American . His post has drawn more than 2,400 comments and been shared over 6,100 times. Some people offered to pay the tip. “Khalil i will tip u mega,” said Facebook poster Kaka Bonsu. Many condemned the customer’s actions. “I am sorry that you were treated so ignorantly by these customers,” Theresa Englehardt said. “Each one of us can always be better. Stand tall and continue on your journey, you seem to have a forgiving and loving heart. I wish you the best in all things.” Cavil did not identify or further discuss who left the message on the receipt. “It’s not about them, and it’s not about me,” Cavil said to the local newspaper. “It’s about this hatred that is still going on, that is still here and prevalent. I just wanted people to understand that.” [H/T CBS DFW ]

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Commuters are fed on with the horrible conditions on the Long Island Rail Road, particularly the broken and torn up seats. Chair after chair in car after car, it’s really no secret they’re far from the best seats in the house. Unfortunately, LIRR riders have no choice but to sit on the tattered and taped up seats day after day, year after year. “When you’re paying like a monthly standard of let’s say 260 dollars a month, you’re sitting on a chair that’s broken or out of service,” Great Neck resident Ariel Basalely said. So what’s the agency doing about it? CBS2’s Reena Roy rode a train with LIRR President Phillip Eng to ask him just that. “It’s one of the things we’ve been talking to customers a lot about in terms of commutes,” Eng said. “As we find torn seats they’re being replaced.” The seats are taken to a repair facility in Hillside, Queens to get fixed. At any given time a hundred cars out of the 11,000 total are in maintenance as part of the annual $400,000 seat replacement program. “It’s a continuous 24/7 operation when they come into maintenance they’re being repaired,” Eng said. “We have over a thousand cars, that’s obviously thousands and thousands of seats. We can’t take a car out of service for one torn seat.” Each car has around 40 to 50 seats, on average. Changing cushions on each seat costs about $50, and one car can take an entire day. Eng adds repairs are tough to keep up with because as some seats are fixed, others are damaged, often by the wear and tear of its 300,000 daily riders.

That must be the intelligence agencies,” the president joked to members of his Cabinet, lawmakers and the assembled media. As the lights were quickly switched on, Trump asked if everyone was OK. “That was strange. But that’s OK,” he said, returning to his statement.
