Report: Former UCLA Star Found Dead After 11-Hour Standoff In Sherman Oaks; Shots Fired
SHERMAN OAKS (CBSLA) — A former UCLA and NBA basketball star was found dead inside a Sherman Oaks home Saturday morning after he barricaded himself inside the residence for 11 hours following a shootout with officers. The victim was identified as 27-year-old Tyler Honeycutt, according to TMZ. FILE — UCLA forward Tyler Honeycutt plays against Oregon State in the first half Saturday, Feb. 12, 2011, at Pauley Pavilion in Westwood. (Los Angeles Times/Getty Images) The incident began when Los Angeles police responded to a man with a gun call in the 4900 block of Tyrone Avenue around 5 p.m. Friday and the man fired at officers, who returned fire. The suspect barricaded himself inside the home, so police set up a perimeter and called in a SWAT team, according to LAPD Officer Jeff Lee. A SWAT team entered the home and located an unresponsive male, who was pronounced dead at the scene, the LAPD tweeted at 3:45 a.m. Saturday. Police later confirmed that the suspect appeared to have died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, and was not struck by any gunfire from the officers. No officers were injured. Some residents were evacuated during the standoff. It’s unclear if they’ve been allowed to return home. Honeycutt played two seasons at UCLA from 2009 to 2011 and then spent two seasons with the Sacramento Kings after being taken in the second round of the 2011 NBA Draft. He then spent several seasons playing in Europe. At the time of his death, he was playing for the club BC Khimki in Russia. Investigators from the department’s Force Investigation Division will look into the incident. (©2018 CBS Local Media, a division of CBS Radio Inc. All Rights Reserved. LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) — Crews are working to restore power following an outage at The Grove. The outage was reported shortly before 7 p.m. Friday. The extent of the outage was not immediately known. The LADWP is meanwhile urging customers to reduce power use where possible as record temperatures hit Southern California. “As we prepare ourselves for extreme weather conditions, we remind our customers to conserve electricity, when possible, while staying safe,” said Martin Adams, LADWP Chief Operating Officer. “Conserving energy not only can help manage your costs, but it also reduces potential strains on our power grid, which can be caused by overworked air conditioners and other appliances.” To help conserve energy, LADWP recommends the following: Adjust air conditioning thermostats to 78 degrees to reduce energy usage during the hottest hours of the day when air conditioning systems have to work hardest to cool. Reduce power use during the afternoon/early evening hours from 2:00 – 9:00 p.m., when energy use is highest. Visit the local library, recreation center, mall, movie theaters, or any other air conditioned gathering place to give your air conditioner a rest. Limit use of major appliances during peak hours of the day–use washing machines, dishwashers, vacuum cleaners and other heavy appliances during the early morning hours or during evening hours. Close window curtains, shades or blinds during the heat of the day to reduce the extra heat from direct sunlight through windows. Ventilate the home in the early morning and evening by opening windows and doors to clear out the heat and allow cooler air to circulate. Turn off lights and other electrical equipment when they are not in use. Unplug “energy vampires” like cell phone chargers, DVD players, microwave ovens and other appliances that use energy even when not in use. To report any loss of power, call 1-800-DIAL-DWP.
