NYPD: Attack On Woman In Subway A Hate Crime

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — A Brooklyn mother is recovering after being randomly attacked in a subway station. The victim claims she suffered injuries so severe they required surgery, and now police are investigating the attack as a hate crime, CBS2’s Reena Roy reported Sunday. Subway riders were fired up moments after police said 57-year-old Ann Marie Washington was attacked inside the Church Avenue subway station at around 7:30 p.m. on Friday. (Photo: CBS2) Police are investigating the incident as a hate crime, saying the suspect, described as a white man in his 30s, yelled out racial slurs. “The victim was hunched over. She couldn’t really stand up. She just seemed like in shock, really dazed and out of it,” witness Kezia Bernard-Nau said. She told CBS2’s Roy off camera he even stabbed her in the shoulder, and that because of shock she didn’t realize until the next morning when she woke up in a pool of blood. “Her daughter found her and was like we need to take you to hospital, like what is going on? They rushed her to hospital and that’s when she found out that she was indeed really hurt and her lung collapsed because of it,” Bernard-Nau said. MORE : Police Arrest Suspect Who Slashed Queens Subway Rider, Punched Another Witnesses said Washington was walking up the stairs after getting off the Q train when the suspect came up from behind and started to attack. “She’s just scared and she wants this guy caught because he can go out and do something worse to someone else,” Bernard-Nau said. Community activists said they are hoping for a speedy arrest. Washington had to go into surgery for her lung. She is still recovering at the hospital as her attacker remains on the streets.

Police Arrest Suspect In Menacing Aboard Manhattan Subway

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Police on Tuesday arrested a man they say threatened a straphanger with a knife while he was riding a subway with a small child last month. 23-year-old Edgar Rodriguez, of Manhattan, was taken into custody and charged with menacing after he was allegedly caught on cell phone video threatening another passenger in an expletive-laced tirade, waving the weapon and spitting at the passenger before getting off the northbound E train at West 4th Street. VIDEO: Father With Young Son Pulls Knife On Another Straphanger On Subway That passenger tells CBS2 the incident started after he confronted Rodriguez for hitting the child he was traveling with. “He was crying, and that’s why caught everybody’s attention – the noise when he hit him on the arm,” the man said. “I have two kids. I wouldn’t do anything like that. That’s why I couldn’t hold myself when I say, ‘Listen, what you’re doing is not right.’” The victim said he takes the E train every day and he’s worried the suspect will retaliate. “If he pull a knife and threaten your life in front of everybody and holding his child at the same time, he’s a guy (that) doesn’t have anything to lose,” he said. He said he was just trying to do the right thing, but now will never intervene again. Rodriguez was also charged with two counts of endangering the welfare of a child and criminal possession of a weapon.

VIDEO: Father With Young Son Pulls Knife On Another Straphanger On Subway

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – A subway rider says he confronted a man for allegedly hitting a child on the E train, but police say the man then pulled out a knife. Cellphone video shows the suspect going on an expletive-laced tirade, waving the weapon and spitting at the straphanger before getting off the train. The 45-year-old victim, who did not want to reveal his identity, told CBS2’s Lisa Rozner it all started on the E train at Canal Street after the suspect hit his young son in a stroller. “He was crying, and that’s why caught everybody’s attention – the noise when he hit him on the arm,” the man said. “I have two kids. I wouldn’t do anything like that. That’s why I couldn’t hold myself when I say, ‘Listen, what you’re doing is not right.’” Victim: “Why you hitting your son?” Suspect: “Because he’s my son and I can do that.” At one point, the even yelled at the suspect to stop. Suspect: “I’m not stopping nothing until you do something.” This happened around 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, June 24. The victim was with his wife and 4-year-old daughter, who asked her dad if everything was OK. Suspect: “Yeah, it’s fine, your daddy will get killed on this train.” At the West 4 th Street stop, the suspect held the subway doors open and flashed the knife. “That’s obviously pretty scary,” another rider told Rozner. “You never know, and it just says you shouldn’t confront people on the subway, because it could be dangerous,” a woman added. Police said the suspect is now wanted for menacing.
