‘Art On The Avenue’ Brings Works Of Art To Columbus Avenue In Bid To Boost Local Businesses

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – Walking along Columbus Avenue on the Upper West Side, you’ll notice a brand new display of art that goes on for blocks. The purpose is to bring the community together at a time it’s needed most. Works of art have been added to Columbus Avenue, bursting with beauty. They’re easy to spot from 67th-82nd Street. “I think it put some beauty in a very dismal time,” said Upper West Side resident Bobbi Sklar. “The more traffic we can bring into the area and help especially small business owners. It’s wonderful,” said Upper West Side resident Paige Brotherton. He’s exhibiting his favorites. In one portrait, if you look closely, you can see Stetson and his camera reflected in his subject’s sunglasses. In another portrait of an artist in Union Square, you can see reflections of his painting in his eyes. “He’s painting on a white canvas and then here you can see the colors of the painting,” Stetson said. “I think it shows that we are a community and we are a neighborhood and that’s what I like,” Zentner said. NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Business owners already struggling because of the coronavirus pandemic are getting hit again, this time with summonses and fines for not following COVID-19 guidelines. Lorraine Gericke, manager of Best Tress Hair Salon, was told by a city inspector she was doing it all wrong, using a notebook to write down customers’ temperatures and information for contact tracing. “They’re slapping us with a $1,000 fine, which is so unfair,” she told CBS2’s Dave Carlin. The penalty is because they did not use city forms instead. “We were not aware that we needed these,” Gericke said. He said the inspector told him, and just one day later, another inspector returned and fined him $1,000. “They don’t give me the time to do that, you know?” Chen said. On one block of Dry Harbor Road in Middle Village, Queens , at least four business were hit with fines and, in some cases, multiple fines. This is what the city has been doing even before, pre-COVID, they were doing this to the businesses, putting layer upon layer of regulations on them,” Holden said. Realtor Christopher Tscherne was fined for not having six-foot social distance markers on his floor. “If an agent is going to come around and say I need to have stickers, why don’t they have a few stickers in their car?” he said. New Jersey Lawmakers Propose Option Of Putting Symbol On Driver’s Licenses To Denote Autism

STEWARTSVILLE, N.J. (CBSNewYork) — There is a push in New Jersey to allow people living with autism or a communication disability to voluntarily add a special marking to their driver’s licenses. This could eliminate potentially dangerous misunderstandings during traffic stops and other encounters with police officers, CBS2’s Dave Carlin reported Thursday. Will Milazzo is on the autistic spectrum . The 23-year-old is in college, plays hockey, and has a part-time data entry job. About a year ago he got his driver’s license. He has never been pulled over by police, but he’s confident he’d tell an officer about his autism. “I prefer to just inform them,” Milazzo said. Kelly Milazzo said. “His way of processing could be absolutely misinterpreted as aggressive or noncompliant and that could go bad very quickly.” “They may not be communicating. Having the driver’s license reflect autism is only part of it. The plan would also mandate police officers receive extra training, Carlin reported. “That’s going to improve every interaction, right? Unless chance of an altercation or interaction to go badly,” Kelly Milazzo said. Carlin asked Will Milazzo how he thinks officers should approach him or anyone with autism. “How about being loyal and polite to them?” he said. ‘Wally,’ Goat Abandoned At Secaucus Walmart, Now At Sanctuary

SECAUCUS, N.J. (CBSNewYork) – A goat abandoned Thursday at the Secaucus Walmart Super Center has been renamed Wally and taken to The Barnyard Sanctuary animal pet farm and rescue due to his infection with a contagious disease. The dwarf fainting goat was found Thursday morning running loose in one of the nation’s largest Walmarts. Animal control officers took the little kid to the sanctuary where he was estimated to be 3 to 4 months old. In addition, caretakers also discovered the goat was sick with orf, a viral disease which can affect goats, sheep and humans. Workers at the sanctuary named the baby goat “Wally” — in honor of Walmart — and placed him in quarantine for further treatment. “We believe him to be a Dwarf Nigerian, maybe a fainting goat, as he gets stiff in the hind legs sometimes, if startled,” the rescue workers posted on Facebook. Secaucus Mayor Michael Gonnelli said the rescue was an easy one. “It didn’t fight us, it went down like a lamb,” he said. “Anytime we can save an animal and help an animal, that’s what we do.” “It’s pretty cool that they did save the goat,” said Walmart employee George Arcos. The city thinks Wally’s owner may have been overwhelmed. “I guess they thought they were trying to save him, but maybe they couldn’t manage him, and they dumped him. We found him and we sent them to a rescue down in Route 80,” the mayor said. “He will be a happy goat from now on.” The goat’s ear was tagged, meaning it was marked for slaughter, CBS2’s Dave Carlin reported. The tag was from Indiana.

Bronx, Queens Residents Call On Albany To Extend Speed Camera Program

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — A roadblock is fast approaching for the New York State program that uses cameras to catch speeders in school zones. A campaign to get Albany to act now resulted in midday rallies in two boroughs Thursday. Speed cameras in school zones, hated by some, are more of a love-hate thing for one Bronx resident. “They’re good when they catch stuff, and they’re bad when they catch me speeding,” he told CBS2’s Dave Carlin. The pilot program that’s putting speed cameras near schools in 140 zones expires July 25. To keep them from fading out, New York State lawmakers must step in with a special session. More: Mayor To Albany: Don’t End School Zone Speed Camera Program In Queens, a demonstration to extend the camera program had a similar format to one in the Bronx. Both featured relatives of kids killed by speeding drivers near schools. And both urged lawmakers to get it passed, keeps cameras rolling, and the tickets flowing. “We need speed cameras,” one demonstrator said. But some drivers, who consider the fines a kind of tax and a city money grab, are happy to hear the cameras may go dark. “I’m a driver who could like them, you know what I mean?” said one driver. “The motivation has always been about protecting lives and preventing injuries,” Assemblyman Jeffery Dinowitz said. “We’ve seen fatal crashes have decrease by 55 percent in school zones with speed cameras,” said State Sen. Jeffrey Klein. Assemblyman Dinowitz and State Sen. Klein told reporters they just got the votes needed after State Sen. Martin Golden announced he is eager to keep the cameras going and wants to vote yes. Supporters of the legislation say getting it does not stop their fight. They say they want photo enforcement speed cameras for every school zone. “There are 2,000 schools in New York. We really need more but will take this for now,” one demonstrator said. Senate Majority Leader John Flanagan is being pressured to reconvene in Albany and call a vote. His representatives told CBS2 the door is not closed on a special session, but there are no plans for one at this time. Drivers caught on the cameras speeding in schools zones are issued tickets with a $50 fine.

Mass Honors Teaneck Father, 4 Daughters Killed In Delaware Crash

TEANECK, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) — A father who died along with his four daughters in a Delaware highway crash was a native of the Philippines and U. S. Navy veteran who settled in New Jersey to raise his family. A Mass Sunday morning honored 61-year-old Audie Trinidad of Teaneck and his daughters, 20-year-old Kaitlyn, 17-year-old Danna and 13-year-old twins Melissa and Allison. “They were always so happy, never down,” Teaneck resident Fiona Carter said. The family was returning from a trip to Ocean City, Maryland, Friday on U.S. Route 1 when police said a pickup truck crossed the median for unknown reasons and hit the minivan and another car. The girls’ mother, 53-year-old Mary Rose, was rushed to the hospital with serious injuries and is expected to survive. Her aunt attended the Sunday memorial service. “She needs everybody’s prayers,” said Lydia Agas, who had very little sleep after attending a packed vigil Saturday night. Students at Teaneck High School made shirts memorializing Danna, who was a junior. “She was an amazing young lady, National Honors Society, very active,” said Dean of Students Olivia Betances. “All the siblings were.” Audi’s brother Danny Trinidad flew in from Florida. “In the blink of an eye, lost everything,” he said. “My brother’s a nice family man. He loves his family. They all go out during summer break and he takes his kids.” Members of the congregation recall the family attended mass every Sunday morning, always sitting in the same row. “It’s hard to wrap our head around it but we are going to get through this together,” said Brigid Dwyer Carter. Church representatives were also in Delaware on Sunday speaking with Mary Rose, helping her with the complex task of arranging services that will end with five burials. At the family’s home, flowers were left on the lawn as further proof of how much the community cares. Delaware State police say Audi, who was driving, and his wife, who was in the front passenger seat, were wearing seatbelts. The daughters in the back were not. Investigators have yet to figure out what caused the driver of the pickup trick, identified as 44-year-old Alvin S. Hubbard, to cross the median into oncoming traffic. NYPD Detective Home From Hospital After Being Shot In Leg In Brooklyn

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — An NYPD detective has been released from the hospital after he was shot in the leg Friday in Brooklyn. The shooting happened around 6:40 a.m. on Decatur Street in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood. Police Commissioner James O’Neill On Officer Shooting Police said Det. Miguel Soto and his partner were in an unmarked police van when they noticed 33-year-old Kelvin Stichel, who was wanted in a domestic armed robbery. “The police identified themselves and told the man to show them his hands,” said Police Commissioner James O’Neill. “The suspect then displayed a gun and shot at the officers, striking a detective once in the leg. The detective returned fire as the two other officers and the suspect ran away.” A NYPD detective who was shot in Bed-Stuy on July 6, 2018, was released from the hospital the same day. (credit: CBS2) Soto was shot once in the right thigh, and the bullet passed through his leg. “He’s a real tough guy. I’m glad he’s part of the NYPD. He does a great job each and every day,” O’Neill said. The 32-year-old husband, father and seven-year member of the NYPD was treated at Kings County Hospital and released about eight hours later. Stichel was shot in the arm. He was taken to Brookdale University Hospital Medical Center where he was expected to survive. Police said the officers followed a trail of blood to find him hiding in the hallway of an apartment building on Kingston Avenue.
