Cranston Fire Near Idyllwild Grows Overnight Friday, 7,000 Remain Away From Their Homes

IDYLLWILD (CBSLA) – An arson-sparked wildfire burning in the San Jacinto Mountains near the Riverside County community of Idyllwild continues to grow, as thousands of people have been forced to flee their homes. The fire was active overnight Friday, burning east into Garner Valley. “Concerns remain on the northeast portion of the fire along South Ridge with fire backing through retardant line above the town of Idyllwild,” the U.S. Forest Service said in a statement Saturday. About 7,000 people remain under mandatory evacuation orders. Five homes have been destroyed and 4,927 structures remain threatened. RELATED: Hollywood Couple Forced To Adopt Plan B When Cranston Fire Derails Wedding About 1,300 firefighters from multiple agencies are battling the blaze with the help of five water-dropping helicopters and nine fixed-wing aircraft. Two firefighters have been hurt, according to USFS. Their conditions were unknown. The following areas remain under mandatory evacuation: Mountain Center, Idyllwild, Hurkey Creek, San Jacinto Mountain State Park, Fern Valley, Pine Cove, Cedar Glen and all of Garner Valley. Several recreation areas in the Mt. San Jacinto State Park and the San Bernardino National Forest are closed. Paradise Corner is under an evacuation warning, meaning residents need to be prepared to leave at a moment’s notice. The Cranston Fire broke out at around 11:40 a.m. Wednesday, east of the Cranston Fire Station off Highway 74, between Hemet and Mountain Center. That same afternoon, a 32-year-old man was arrested in connection with the blaze. Brandon McGlover of Temecula was taken into custody at about 1 p.m. Wednesday in Hemet. On Friday, the Riverside County district attorney’s office charged McGlover with starting nine fires in southwest Riverside County, including the Cranston Fire, all on the same day. He faces a total of 15 felony counts, including one count of aggravated arson, five counts of arson of an inhabited structure and nine counts of arson of forest or wildland. Highway 74 is closed from the city of Hemet to Highway 371 at Paradise Corner. Highway 243 is closed from Banning to the intersection with Highway 74. An evacuation center is in place at Banning High School.

Hollywood Couple Forced To Adopt Plan B When Cranston Fire Derailed Their Wedding

HOLLYWOOD (CBSLA) — A Hollywood couple had to come up with Plan B for their wedding when the original location was caught in the cross hairs of the Cranston Fire. The bride and groom spoke to KCAL9’s Jo Kwon about their change of plans. Joey Fonacier and Connie Lin got engaged two years ago and picked Idyllwild for the big day because the area represents their love for the great outdoors. But the Cranston Fire meant their big day was in danger of being derailed. “Hoping it was a small fire but I did not know it was going to escalate to something this big,” Lin said. “I was like no way,” says Fonacier. “This can’t be happening.” He says a friend texted him and asked, ‘Did you see about the fire in Idyllwild?’” “I thought he was kidding,” Fonacier says. He went on line and realized the text was no joke. “Okay, it does not look like we’re going to Idyllwild,” he said. A year of planning — gone! (credit: Fonacier/Lin GoFundMe) Now they had a condo filled with wedding stuff that was supposed to be on its way to Idyllwild. “I thought we need a minute,” Fonacier says, “So we went to go get ice cream.” They even took a selfie to commemorate the occasion — they had about 48 hours to plan a new wedding. “I didn’t even know how I was supposed to feel,” Lin says. Thanks to friends and family — and strangers — they couple has pulled off the near-impossible. “I thought let’s do a Plan B,” said the groom’s mother, Luz Fonacier,”And my son said there’s no Plan B. And I said, yes, there’s always a Plan B!” Lin Googled “last-minute” wedding venues but there “was no information I needed.” They pulled off a Plan B with the help of a GoFundMe page to help pay for the second nuptials. “I cannot believe people set up this GoFundMe for us” Lin says. “I’m just so thankful.” Luz is busy with the centerpieces. Dad is helping with the table markers. It’s all hands on deck as they get ready for their new special day. “I can’t believe we pulled this off,” Lin says, “And I think I’ll treasure the party even more now.” And the groom concurs. “We thought we’d have something beautiful in Idyllwild,” he says, “And everyone would remember that, but everyone will definitely remember this.” The couple will be married Saturday in front of 100 guests at the Fig House in Highland Park. Temecula Man Booked For Felony Arson As Cranston Fire Roars Through Idyllwild

IDYLLWILD (CBSLA) — A Temecula man faces several charges of felony arson Thursday as firefighters battle a blaze roaring through the mountain community of Idyllwild for a second day. Brandon McGlover, 32, has been booked on several charges of felony arson, including maliciously setting fire to property, but he could face more as the investigation into the Cranston Fire continues, according to Cal Fire. McGlover is being held on $1 million bail. Authorities say he set several fires in southwest Riverside County, one of which grew into the Cranston Fire , which roared out of control Wednesday afternoon. The blaze has destroyed five homes, and scorched more than 4,700 acres. As 500 firefighters fought back the flames overnight, more than 3,000 people have been evacuated. An evacuation center was established for residents and campers at Banning High School, 100 W. Westward Ave. Animals of all sizes can be taken to the San Jacinto Valley Animal Campus at 581 S. Grand Ave. Dysart Equestrian Park, 2101 W. Victory Ave. in Banning, but the small ones will be transferred to the San Jacinto Valley Animal Campus. Residents can call (951) 358-7329 for assistance with moving animals. Overnight, flames burned away from homes. But that bit of good news was tempered by the extension of excessive heat warnings through Friday night. Thursday’s forecast high is 90 degrees for the Idyllwild-Pine Cove area. Authorities have also issued a smoke advisory for the region, advising that winds could bring smoke into various parts of Riverside County, including the Coachella Valley, Banning Pass, the Hemet/San Jacinto Valley, Perris Valley and Anza.
