SANTA MONICA (CBSLA) – Actor Ving Rhames said he was held at gunpoint by police at his own Santa Monica home two years ago when he was mistaken by neighbors for a robber. The Santa Monica Police Department said Saturday that the incident was one of two which prompted the department to launch its “Meet Your Neighbors” program. FILE — Actor Ving Rhames poses during the ‘Soldiers of Fortune’ photocall, on the roof of Ukraine hotel on July 18, 2012, in Moscow, Russia. (Getty Images) Neighbors allegedly called 911 to report two black people, one of which being Rhames, had supposedly broke into residences that turned out to be their own. Rhames for the first time publicly discussed the incident Friday to a radio audience. Rhames, appearing on Sirius XM’s “The Clay Cane” show, said that he was watching ESPN when he heard knocking at his door. “I open the door, there’s a red dot pointed at my face from a nine millimeter,” Rhames said. He was ordered to put his hands in the air, adding that there were at least four officers and a police dog at his house. The incident occurred at 1:52 a.m. on July 29, 2016 when several neighbors reported that “a black male was seen entering a residence and did not live there,” police said in a statement. “As officers were assessing the residence, they encountered the resident at the front door. Officers recognized the resident and the situation was quickly deescalated with no use of force occurring. The resident was identified as Ving Rhames.” Lt. Saul Rodriguez also said a similar occurred September 6, 2015, and involved Fay Wells, a black woman who had locked herself out of her apartment. Wells, who earned an MBA from Dartmouth University, and was a vice president of strategy at a company at the time, wrote about the incident in the Washington Post. In the piece, Wells wrote that she called for a locksmith and once inside her apartment heard a man’s voice and what sounded like a small dog whimpering outside. “I imagined a loiterer and opened the door to move him along. I was surprised to see a large dog halfway up the staircase to my door. I stepped back inside, closed the door and locked it. I heard barking. I approached my front window and loudly asked what was going on. Peering through my blinds I saw a gun. “A man stood at the bottom of the stairs, pointing it at me. I stepped back and heard ‘Come outside with your hands up.”‘ Wells said she later learned that the Santa Monica Police Department had dispatched 19 officers after one of her neighbors reported a burglary at her apartment. Hence, the police department launched a city-wide “Meet Your Neighbors” program on Jan. 30, 2017, according to a department news statement. “The key to this event is simple engagement and community building through a coffee date or ice cream social, for example,” the statement said. “Our challenge to the community is to step out of their comfort zone and get to know the people on their block — their neighbors.” Jacqueline Seabrooks, the first female black patrol officer for the Santa Monica Police Department in 1982, and California’s first black woman to serve as police chief for a municipality when she became chief of the Inglewood Police Department in 2007, began her tenure as Santa Monica’s police chief in 2012, retiring Sept. 30, 2017. SHASTA COUNTY, CA (CBSNews) – The Carr fire in Northern California exploded overnight. Homes were still on fire Friday morning after a night of devastation in Shasta County, California. The sun burned through a haze of smoke, revealing blackened cars and the charred rubble of houses. “Devastating, homes were exploding, cars were exploding,” said Shasta County resident Tom Mahan. More From CBS News Mahan ran into a burning neighborhood to help save the home of his friend, firefighter Donovan Lee. “First thing that I seen was an RV trying to come out with all the evacuees. It was – you could tell he was driving frantic. And as he entered the intersection, he actually hit a sheriff squad car and drug it about 200 feet,” said Mahan. “It was pretty intense,” said Lee. Lee did save his home, hosing it down as flames surrounded him. “There were a couple of times when I was thinking oh maybe this wasn’t a good idea,” said Lee. “It just kind of makes me feel a little sick,” said Shasta County resident Judy Hein. Hein lost the home she lived in for 18 years. She had enough time to gather some belongings. “You need your important papers and you need this, but you just don’t want to stop there,” said Hein. The fire killed one firefighter, who was operating a bulldozer, and one from the city of Redding. Thousands have been evacuated and dozens of buildings were destroyed. Eighty-eight wildfires are reportedly burning right now around the country.

IRVINE (CBSLA/AP) – Training camp for the Los Angeles Rams will enter its second day Friday at the University of California, Irvine, as the team faces high expectations following its surprising success last season, when it won its first NFC West title since 2003. Corner back (21) Aqib Talib takes questions from the media during the Los Angeles Rams Training Camp on July 26, 2018 at UC Irvine in Irvine, CA. (Photo by Chris Williams/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images) Last week, the Rams signed marquee running back Todd Gurley to a four-year, $60 million extension , the richest for a running back in NFL history on a per-season basis. A few days prior, the Rams gave newly-acquired wide receiver Brandin Cooks a whopping $80 million, five-year deal . The Complete Rams Training Camp Schedule The signings were somewhat puzzling given the noticeable absence from training camp of arguably the team’s best player, All-Pro defensive tackle Aaron Donald. Donald, the NFL’s defensive player of the year, and the Rams have been working on a long-term extension since early last year. Donald skipped all of training camp last year in a holdout, and he missed all of the Rams’ offseason activities this spring. He did not report to the first day of camp Thursday. Donald is under contract for this season for nearly $6.9 million in the fifth year of his rookie contract. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the belief around the league is that Donald will not play another down on his current contract. (Photo by Chris Williams/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images) Coach Sean McVay says talks with Donald haven’t advanced since earlier this week, when Donald was still at home in Pittsburgh. Donald, the No. 13 overall pick in the 2013 draft, has made the Pro Bowl every season of his career. He has been named a first team All-Pro in the past last three seasons. H has had 39 sacks across his first four seasons, first in the league among defensive tackles, according to CBS Sports . “We’re simultaneously working to make Aaron a Ram a long time,” Rams General Manager Les Snead said last week. “That’s the goal. Aaron is a big part of who we are, where we want to go, but the details and all that, we’re going to continue the course of keeping them in-house.” Adding to Donald’s frustration could be the summer signing of defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh to a one-year, $14 million deal . While a solid player, Suh is not anywhere near the caliber of Donald, but will be making more than double Donald’s salary. (Photo by Chris Williams/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images) Each day of training camp, which runs through Aug. 16, will be open to the public except for today, which is reserved for Rams season ticket holders. All but one of the practices open to the general public will begin at 3 p.m. The exception is the final one, Aug. 16, which will begin at 9:45 a.m. The other open practices will be conducted July 29-30, Aug. 1-2, 4, 11-13 and Aug. 15. To attend any practice held on a Saturday or Sunday, fans must sign up in advance for their free ticket, which will be used to redeem the giveaway. The tickets are available at therams.com/freetickets. Parking will be available in the Mesa Parking Structure, next to the Bren Events Center. Fans are encouraged to purchase parking passes in advance for the discounted rate of $10 here . Parking purchased in-person on the day of practice is $15. The training camp includes an expanded fan activation area, which will open two hours prior to every practice. The area will include a DJ, face painting, interactive photo experience, enter-to-win opportunities and a virtual reality gaming tent. Fans will have the opportunity to form a Fan Tunnel when the players take the field for practice. Each practice, 20 fans along with a guest of their choosing will be selected to form the tunnel. Fans must register in advance for the chance to take part in the Fan Tunnel here . The fans selected will be notified by the Rams 48 hours in advance of their respective date. Fans may bring the following items to practice — hats, jackets, rain gear, sunglasses, sunscreen, binoculars, umbrellas, and strollers. The following items will not be permitted at training camp — outside alcohol, outside food and beverage, coolers, glass containers, noise makers, loud radios, large signs or inappropriate attire. Pets are not allowed, although service animals are permitted. No weapons of any kind, regardless of persons with concealed carry handgun permits, will be allowed. Fans may bring cameras. Flash photography is not allowed. Video cameras are prohibited. UC Irvine is a smoke- and tobacco-free campus. (© Copyright 2018 CBS Broadcasting Inc. All Rights Reserved. PALO ALTO, Calif. (CBSLocal) – A teenager is in serious trouble after going on a bizarre crime spree when his phone reportedly ran out of data. The 17-year-old suspect from Palo Alto was arrested after allegedly breaking into an area home, waking up a sleeping couple, and asking them to give him their WiFi password. “The male victim got out of bed, confronted the suspect, and pushed him down the hallway and out the front door of the house before calling police. No one was injured,” Pal Alto police said in a news release . The couple – both reportedly in their 60s – told officers that two kitchen knives went missing from their home during the teen’s alleged break-in, however police didn’t find any weapons on the suspected burglar when he was caught. According to authorities, the teen’s crime wave allegedly started a day earlier on July 21. The teen is believed to be the same person who came up to the window of a different home and asked a woman inside for her Wifi password. The teen reportedly claimed his phone was out of data. When the woman and another teen in the home ordered the suspect to leave their property, he allegedly fled on one of the their bikes. Officers say they found the stolen bike near the same location where the suspected WiFi-seeking crook was stopped by police. According to the release, “officers returned the bicycle to the victim and are recommending that the District Attorney’s Office add a charge of misdemeanor petty theft against the suspect.” The suspect – who was not publicly identified because he’s a minor – was taken to Santa Clara County Juvenile Hall and is facing a felony charge of burglary. He’s also been charged with prowling and providing false information to an officer, both misdemeanors.

DJ Sixsmith New York will always have a special place in David Denman’s heart. The actor went to school at Julliard, lived in NYC and recently returned to the Big Apple to film his new movie “Puzzle”, which hits theaters on Friday. “The city started evolving when I moved here from California,” Denman told CBS Local’s DJ Sixsmith. “I was here in the late 90s and it used to be a little sketch to go near Times Square. Now, there are luxury apartments and restaurants on every corner.” Denman was the first member of his family to go to college and didn’t realize a school specifically for acting existed until his friend told him. The Juilliard School features prominent alums such as Robin Williams, Jessica Chastain and Miles Davis, and Denman says the experience at the prominent New York theater school lived up to the hype. “Juilliard has the luxury of a certain standard of excellence. The training was great for me, it was very challenging and very difficult,” said Denman. “There was a lot of pressure, but that pressure prepared me for the business where I had to do a monologue in front of 150 people on a set.” David’s fondest New York memories include getting pizza with friends at Sacco Pizza and frequenting several bars on 9th Avenue near Lincoln Center. In fact, Denman got the chance to live in New York for the first time in 20 years while filming his new movie and checked out some of the same bars with his friends. The 45-year-old actor is best known for his roles as Roy in “The Office” and Boon in “13 Hours.” Denman has worked with stars such as Gene Hackman, Keanu Reeves, Will Smith and Daniel Craig, but he will never forget his time on “The Office.” “There were only six episodes in the first season and the numbers weren’t great. The only reason they kept us on the air was because we were the most downloaded show on iTunes. You don’t always get the opportunity to be on something like that with so many talented folks.” . @David_Denman discusses his new movie #Puzzle and what it was like to play Roy on The Office https://t.co/pXQxipW7CE pic.twitter.com/Y72P1thm1V — CBS Local (@cbslocal) July 26, 2018 While Denman has played many great roles in his career, he is excited about his new movie “Puzzle,” which was shot right here in New York. The movie features scenes at Grand Central Terminal, Washington Square Park and several other iconic spots in the city.
