CARSON (CBSLA) — Have you seen Julio Cesar Roman? Carson Station Detectives say Roman is the suspect in a nasty and unprovoked attack on a convenience store clerk last month. Officials say Roman walked into a store in the 900 block of West Sepulveda Boulevard in Carson around 6 a.m. on Saturday, June 16. They say he attacked clerk Darlecia D’Andrade after making a purchase and asking to use the bathroom. Officials said he slashed her repeatedly in the face and abdomen with an unknown object. Ramon then ran out of the store, hopped into a car and went southbound on Vermont Ave. Authorities still don’t have a motive for the attack. Roman is described as Latino, 23-years-old, 5 feet 5 inches tall and 150 pounds. He has brown hair, and hazel eyes. When last seen, Roman was wearing a black and green hat with a message about loving “weed,” a red T-shirt, and black pants. (CBS News) — In Annapolis, Maryland, services were held this weekend for three of the five victims of the deadly shooting at the Capital Gazette newspape r. Friends and family paid their respects to Rebecca Smith and Gerald Fishman. And at a memorial Saturday , Wendi Winters was remembered as a passionate reporter and a hero for her actions on that terrible day. Winters is not only being remembered for her love, faith, family and community while reporting for the Capital Gazette, but also for her final acts the day police say gunman Jarrod Ramos stormed into the newspaper’s newsroom, beginning his killing spree. Employees, who were inside during the attack, say it was Winters who charged at the gunman and may have saved more lives. Winters’ coworker, Janel Cooley, who survived the attack told the Capital Gazette that she watched from under her desk as Winters confronted the man using a trash can. Cooley said Winters shouted something like “no, you stop that! And you get out of here!” Winters’ daughter Montana Geimer spoke about that gruesome day before singing at her mother’s service on Saturday. “On Thursday, June 28, 2018, there was no song in the world that could’ve captured how I felt,” Geimer said before singing. “Today, even though I am sad and confused and angry and devastated – how can I keep from singing?” CBS News confirmed Sunday with Winters’ church that she did take part in an active shooter training course just weeks before the shooting rampage that cost her her own life. LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) — Loved ones are looking for answers after a 92-year-old man was hit with a brick in a brutal July 4th attack. Rodolfo Rodriguez suffered broken ribs, a broken cheek bone and has bruises all over his body. This normally healthy and active grandfather says it started just before 8 p.m. on July 4th as he went out for a walk in Willowbrook. On the sidewalk, he says he bumped into a little girl as he was trying to get around her. That’s when he says a woman, believed to be the girl’s mom, threw him to the ground and started hitting him with her fists, then a brick. Erik Mendoza says his grandfather doesn’t speak English and had no idea why he was attacked. “I’m just overwhelmed how anybody can do this to a human being at all,” Mendoza said. “He’s 92 years of age. There’s no harm that he meant for you to treat him the way you did.” Another woman told us she was driving by and saw the whole thing. She said a group of men soon joined the woman in the assault so Catherine got out of her car, took the woman’s picture and asked her why. “When I take the picture, she said, ‘Oh, he tried to touch my girl.’ I saw everything, this is a lie. And when the guys came, they hit him in the face, his body, everything,” the woman said, adding she heard what the woman was saying to Rodriguez. “Go back to your country, why are you here, bad things,” is what the witness said she head. The attackers left as police were called. Mendoza is meanwhile still in disbelief. He says he doesn’t understand how the woman and other men could do this to his defenseless grandfather for accidentally bumping into the little girl. “That’s the lesson you’re going to give your child, for you to hurt elderly people because they bump into you?” he asked. “I just want to know what was going through her mind.” Loved ones have started GoFundMe page to help Rodriguez as he recovers from his injuries.
