Phillies Erupt For 5 In Fifth Inning To Beat Dodgers, 7-3

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — With one of the club’s icons taking perhaps his final bow in Philadelphia, it was easy to recall the Phillies’ recent glory years. A new era of celebration may be near. Scott Kingery homered and Carlos Santana hit a three-run triple in Philadelphia’s five-run fifth inning, leading the Phillies to a 7-3 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday. Rhys Hoskins also went deep for the Phillies, who increased their lead in the NL East to 1½ games over the idle Atlanta Braves by taking two of three in the series. “That was really huge for us,” right-hander Jake Arrieta said. Fans cheered Chase Utley for the final time here before each at-bat, unless the Dodgers face the Phillies in the postseason. Utley, the beloved former Phillie and six-time All-Star who recently announced his retirement at season’s end, helped lead Philadelphia to the 2008 World Series championship and five straight division titles. Citizens Bank Park was a raucous place to be during those high-water seasons and could be again if the Phillies continue winning. “I know what it was like and we all anticipate it being similar to how it was,” Arrieta said. “Fans are hungry. This series was nice. Fans were out in full force.” Arrieta (8-6) allowed two earned runs on five hits in six innings for the victory. Max Muncy homered and Joc Pederson and Alex Verdugo had a pair of hits for Los Angeles. “They beat us,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. “We just got beat this series.” The game started less than 11½ hours after the final out of the Phillies’ 7-4, 16-inning win that started Tuesday night and lasted 5 hours, 55 minutes, ending at 1:14 a.m. Wednesday. Seranthony Dominguez recorded the final four outs for his 10th save in 11 chances. Philadelphia broke the game open in the fifth. Kingery pulled out of a slump with a one-out homer to right off Walker Buehler (4-3) to break a 1-all tie. He had 3 hits in his previous 18 at-bats. After a Jesmuel Valentin single and strikeout, Roberts intentionally walked Hoskins and replaced Buehler with left-hander Scott Alexander. Alexander walked Odubel Herrera to load the bases before Santana’s bases-clearing triple to the wall in right-center made it 6-1. “We get one out there, it’s a different ballgame,” Roberts said. “Didn’t work out for us.” Buehler was charged with five runs on five hits in 4 2/3 innings. He had five strikeouts and one walk. The Dodgers pulled within 6-3 in the sixth on Muncy’s two-run shot to the opposite field. After both teams failed to score in extra innings until Trevor Plouffe’s three-run homer off position player Kike Hernandez in the previous game, both promptly scored a run in the opening inning Wednesday. Matt Kemp’s sacrifice fly scored Pederson, who went to third on one of two throwing errors in the frame by catcher Andrew Knapp. Philadelphia tied it in the bottom half on Hoskins’ one-out homer to deep left, giving the slugger long balls in four of five contests. UTLEY UPDATE Utley went 0 for 3 with a strikeout. He finished the series 1 for 8. Following the game, Phillies owner John Middleton embraced Utley in front of the Dodgers’ dugout and the second baseball got one final standing ovation while doffing his cap in every direction of the ballpark. HOT JOC Pederson batted .533 with three doubles, a homer and two RBIs in the three-game series. HOME SWEET HOME The Phillies have won 10 of 13 at home to increase their NL-best mark to 34-18 in their ballpark. PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Trevor Plouffe hit a three-run homer off outfielder Kike Hernandez with one out in the 16th inning as the Philadelphia Phillies outlasted the Los Angeles Dodgers 7-4 Tuesday night in a game that lasted nearly six hours. After using eight pitchers, the Dodgers turned to Hernandez (0-1) in the 16th. He got Nick Williams to fly out, then walked Jesmuel Valentin and Jorge Alfaro before Plouffe hit an opposite-field shot for his first homer of the season and second career walkoff, ending the game after 5:55. Eight Phillies relievers combined to allow one run and six hits over 11 impressive innings, with Vince Velasquez (7-8) pitching the top of the 16th. Velasquez, who tossed seven scoreless innings in the second game of Sunday’s doubleheader win against San Diego, made his first relief appearance since 2015. Dodgers Hit 4 Homers In 7-6 Win Over Phillies

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Power got the Los Angeles Dodgers started. Patience gave them a win. Max Muncy, Yasmani Grandal, Chris Taylor and Joc Pederson hit solo homers and Alex Verdugo scored the tiebreaking run on a wild pitch in the top of the ninth inning, lifting Los Angeles to a 7-6 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies in a matchup of division leaders Monday night. Maikel Franco hit a pair of solo homers and Rhys Hoskins and Odubel Herrera also went deep for the Phillies. Verdugo led off the ninth with a walk against closer Seranthony Dominguez (1-3). Pederson followed with a single. After Manny Machado struck out, Muncy walked. Verdugo scored when catcher Jorge Alfaro couldn’t catch Dominguez’s outside pitch. Dominguez exited after walking Grandal. Matt Kemp greeted Luis Garcia with an RBI single to make it 7-5. “We felt him out, looked at a lot of tough pitches, and came back with a big inning,” Kemp said of Dominguez. Scott Alexander (2-0) tossed a scoreless inning for the win. Kenley Jansen finished for his 29th save in 32 chances. Franco hit Jansen’s first pitch out to left for his 15th homer. Chase Utley, a six-time All-Star second baseman during Philadelphia’s glory days a decade ago, received two loud, standing ovations before the game and when he came to the plate for the first time. Utley recently announced he’s retiring after the season so this will likely be his final series playing in Philadelphia unless the Dodgers face the Phillies in the postseason. He went 0 for 4. “It was a lot of fun, it was intense, it was emotional,” Utley said. “Fans here mean a lot to me. The respect they’ve shown me the last three years is special.” Down 4-1 in the fifth, the Phillies rallied against Ross Stripling. With two outs and runners on second and third, Hoskins ripped a 2-2 pitch out to left-center for his 17th homer. Herrera followed with his 18th homer into Philadelphia’s bullpen to make it 5-4. Machado lined an opposite-field triple to right off reliever Tommy Hunter in the seventh and scored on Muncy’s sacrifice fly. Machado started at third base for the first time this season, replacing Justin Turner. The four-time All-Star was acquired from Baltimore last week. He switched to shortstop, his original position, at the start of this season. Machado heard cheers from Phillies fans, who were disappointed he wasn’t traded to Philadelphia but remain hopeful the team signs him in free agency. Muncy and Grandal hit back-to-back homers in the first inning to give the Dodgers a 2-0 lead. Taylor made it 3-0 in the third with an opposite-field homer to right. ANAHEIM (AP) — Mike Trout drove in a teammate for the first time in more than a month, homering to cap a seven-run burst in seventh inning for the Los Angeles Angels in a 14-5 rout of the Houston Astros on Sunday. Trout hit his 26th home run, a drive off Chris Devenski that followed Andrelton Simmons’ single. Trout’s only RBIs since June 19 had been solo homers off Baltimore’s David Hess on June 29 and against the Los Angeles Dodgers’ Ross Stripling on July 7. Trout’s single in the first ending streaks of 16 plate appearances and 11 at-bats without a hit. David Fletcher had a two-run single in the big inning, Kole Calhoun greeted Devenski with a three-run homer and Ian Kinsler hit a solo homer in the eighth off J.D. Davis, an outfielder and corner infielder. A pitcher at Cal State-Fullerton, Davis had two mound appearances for the Astros in lopsided losses last year. After scoring one run over the previous 24 innings, the Angels set a season high for runs and stopped a three-game losing streak. Andrew Heaney (6-6) won his fourth consecutive home start, allowing one run, four hits and two walks in six innings. Lance McCullers Jr. (10-5) gave up five runs, six hits and five walks in 4 1/3 innings. He became the first Astros pitcher to walk five or more in consecutive starts since Erik Bedard in July 2013. Houston had not allowed double-digit runs since a 13-12, 10-inning win over the Dodgers in Game 5 of the World Series and gave up its most runs since a 14-6 defeat at Detroit on July 29, 2016. MILWAUKEE (AP) — Matt Kemp hit two solo homers and Manny Machado drove in his first run since joining the Los Angeles Dodgers, who pounded out 15 hits in an 11-2 win over the Milwaukee Brewers on Sunday. Chris Taylor had three RBIs for the NL West leaders, who scored five runs in the second and fifth innings. Alex Wood (6-5) won his fifth straight decision. Milwaukee has lost eight of its last nine games. Both of Kemp’s shots came off left-hander Brent Suter (8-7), including a long blast to left-center to open the second. Kemp went deep to right-center in the third for a 6-2 lead, giving him 17 homers for the season. Wood allowed five hits and walked three in six innings. The left-hander settled down after yielding a two-run single to Travis Shaw in the first. Questionable defense by the Brewers contributed to both of the Dodgers’ big innings. In the second, backpedaling first baseman Ryan Braun couldn’t get to a high pop in short right with Keon Broxton charging in behind him, allowing Kike Hernandez to reach with nobody on. Hernandez scored three batters later on a two-out, two-run single by Taylor. Cody Bellinger led off the fifth with a triple after his hit caromed off the wall in right before bouncing past Broxton. Bellinger scored after the next batter, Max Muncy, hit a hard bouncer that Braun couldn’t handle cleanly going to his right at first. Braun, who is primarily an outfielder, was charged with an error. Braun’s tough day extended to the plate, where he went 0 for 4 and stranded seven runners. Braun lined out to shortstop with the bases loaded in the first; he left them loaded again in the second with a sharp groundout. The Brewers trailed 11-2 going into the seventh, so manager Craig Counsell saved his bullpen and had position players close out the game on the mound. Utility player Hernan Perez tossed two scoreless innings before catcher Erik Kratz threw a scoreless ninth. Machado, who was acquired in a trade with Baltimore over the All-Star break, went 2 of 5 and scored a run. Caleb Ferguson shut out Milwaukee over the final three innings for his second save. After solo shots by Willson Contreras, Trevor Story and Christian Yelich for the NL, Scooter Gennett hit a tying two-run homer in the ninth off winner Edwin Diaz. Joey Votto added another home run in the bottom of the 10th off J.A. Happ, who got his first big league save. Michael Brantley’s sacrifice fly that capped a three-run top of the 10th was the only run not driven in by a homer. LOS ANGELES (AP) — Yasmani Grandal homered, Enrique Hernandez hit a solo shot on his first pitch in the seventh inning for the go-ahead run, and the Los Angeles Dodgers rallied for a 5-3 win over the Angels on Sunday to gain a split in the Freeway Series. Each team won three games in the season series, with four decided by one run. The Dodgers ended the first half with a National League-leading 129 homers, tying their record for the most homers before the All-Star break set in 2000. All-Star Max Muncy leads the team with 22. The Dodgers (53-43) head into the break atop the NL West by a half-game over Arizona. The Angels continue heading in the opposite direction. They fell to 49-48 and are 14 games behind the AL West-leading Astros. All-Star Kenley Jansen retired the side in the ninth for his 27th save a day after serving up a 10th-inning homer to Kole Calhoun in the Dodgers’ 5-4 loss. The Angels’ Jefry Marte blasted a three-run homer on his first pitch from Clayton Kershaw to tie the game 3-all in the fourth. Justin Upton led off with an infield single to Kershaw and Ian Kinsler followed with a single to set up Marte’s fourth homer of the season. The Dodgers led 3-0 in the second. Grandal homered, Hernandez hit a sacrifice fly to center field and Kershaw helped himself with a two-out RBI single. Kershaw didn’t figure in the decision, allowing three runs and six hits in 6 2/3 innings of his fifth start since coming off the disabled list. He struck out eight and walked four on 108 pitches, the most he’s thrown since working under restrictions in his first four outings back. Kershaw escaped a bases-loaded jam in the first. He retired seven in a row before the Angels got to him in the fourth. Kershaw gave up a two-out walk to All-Star Mike Trout in the seventh and was replaced by Kenta Maeda (7-5), who got out of a bases-loaded situation by striking out Kinsler. Maeda had one strikeout in one-third of an inning. Taylor Cole (0-2) took the loss, allowing one run and three hits in two innings. He struck out one. Trout was 2 for 10 in the three-game series. He walked twice Sunday, extending his franchise record for walks in the first half to 84. Angels starter Deck McGuire gave up three runs and four hits in three innings. LOS ANGELES (AP) — Max Muncy homered and drove in the go-ahead run in the seventh inning, helping the Los Angeles Dodgers rally past the Angels 3-2 on Friday night in the resumption of the Freeway Series. The Angels took two out of three last week in Anaheim. Muncy, who will participate in next week’s Home Run Derby, singled to deep right-center off Cam Bedrosian (3-2), scoring pinch-hitter Logan Forsythe and Joc Pederson to put the Dodgers ahead 3-2. Muncy took second on right fielder Kole Calhoun’s throw that sailed over the head of catcher Jose Briceno. Bedrosian scrambled to the backstop, but he bobbled the ball and had no throw to the plate as Pederson scored. Caleb Ferguson (2-1) got the win with two perfect innings of relief. Scott Alexander induced a double play to end the ninth for his first save. The Angels got the potential tying run on in the ninth when pinch-hitter Shohei Ohtani doubled with one out. Briceno beat out the throw from shortstop to put runners on the corners. David Fletcher grounded into a game-ending double play to third base. First baseman Cody Bellinger barely tagged Fletcher before he got to the bag for the final out. Muncy’s 22nd home run in the first off starter Felix Pena gave the Dodgers a 1-0 lead. Calhoun tied the game with a homer leading off the third and put the Angels ahead 2-1 with another solo shot leading off the fifth. SAN DIEGO (AP) — Rookie left-hander Eric Lauer came within one out of his first career complete game before allowing Max Muncy’s home run, and Wil Myers homered for the sixth time in four games to lead the San Diego Padres over the Los Angeles Dodgers 4-1 on Tuesday night. Austin Hedges had a three-run shot for the Padres. Lauer (5-5) took a three-hit shutout into the ninth inning, facing the heart of the Dodgers’ order after having thrown 101 pitches. He got Enrique Hernandez to fly out to center and Justin Turner to fly out to deep left before Muncy drove a 1-1 pitch into the seats in left, his 21st. After throwing 115 pitches, Lauer made way for Kirby Yates, who struck out All-Star Matt Kemp to end it. Kemp struck out four times. Lauer struck out a career-high eight and walked two in winning consecutive starts for the first time. Myers, who has played in only 28 games this season due to injuries, has heated up after a second stint on the disabled list. He hit three home runs Saturday in a 20-5 loss at Arizona, hit another in the 16th inning on Sunday to give the Padres a 4-3 win over the Diamondbacks, and then homered in the ninth inning of an 8-2 loss to Clayton Kershaw and the Dodgers on Monday night. His homer Tuesday night, to left-center on a 2-1 pitch off Rich Hill (2-4), was his eighth overall. Hedges hit his fourth of the season earlier in the inning, off the Western Metal Supply Co. brick warehouse in the left field corner at Petco Park on a 1-2 pitch. Freeway Series: Ohtani Hits Pinch-Hit Homer To Lift Angels Over Dodgers 4-3

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Shohei Ohtani’s pinch-hit home run in the seventh inning sent Andrew Heaney and the Los Angeles Angels to a 4-3 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Sunday. Heaney allowed only three hits and tied a career high with 10 strikeouts in seven innings to help the Angels take two of three at home in the Freeway Series. He gave up a three-run homer to Yasiel Puig, who later left with an oblique injury. Ohtani drove his first career pinch-hit homer a projected 443 feet to center field, breaking a 3-all tie. It also was the Angels’ first pinch-hit home run of the season. The two-way rookie star from Japan, unavailable to pitch because of an elbow injury, fouled a ball off his knee one day earlier and experienced soreness. He was not in the starting lineup and it was unclear if he would be able to come off the bench. But he did, and Ohtani hit a 2-2 pitch from reliever JT Chargois (2-2) for his seventh home run of the season. Albert Pujols also went deep for the Angels, tying the score at 3 in the sixth. Justin Upton had a two-run single. Puig homered in the second after Heaney (5-6) walked two batters in the inning. The left-hander was dominant after that. Justin Anderson allowed a single in the ninth but got Cody Bellinger to ground into a game-ending double play for his fourth save. Puig exited during an at-bat in the fifth with a strained right oblique. He grimaced in pain and hunched over after taking a swing. In the third inning, the Dodgers elected to intentionally walk Mike Trout to load the bases with two outs. Upton, who had struggled with runners in scoring position, hit a two-run single to center to pull the Angels to 3-2. Pujols tied the game with a solo home run, his 13th of the season, in the sixth. Trout has been walked intentionally 16 times this season, which is the ninth-most before the All-Star break in American League history. John Olerud had the most in the AL with 22 in 1993. Alex Wood had won four consecutive starts before Sunday, but didn’t factor into the decision. He allowed three runs and four hits in six innings. TRAINER’S ROOM Dodgers: RHP Walker Buehler (right rib micro fracture) threw a five-inning simulated game of 75 pitches. He’ll throw a bullpen Wednesday and make a start next weekend against the Angels. Angels: X-rays on Ohtani’s knee were negative. … RHP Matt Shoemaker (right forearm) will start a throwing program Tuesday with hopes of returning this season. UP NEXT Dodgers: LHP Clayton Kershaw (2-4, 2.86 ERA) pitches at San Diego on Monday. In 32 career starts against the Padres, he’s 17-6 with a 1.94 ERA. Angels: RHP Garrett Richards (5-4, 3.42) returned from the disabled list and struck out eight in his first start back Wednesday against the Mariners. Aaron Judge was voted by fans to start for the American League in the July 17 game in Washington. Judge has 25 home runs to go along with 58 RBIs, 62 runs scored, and a .277 batting average in 314 at bats through 84 games this year. He’ll be only one of six position players drafted by the Yankees to make the All-Star team in pinstripes. Trout is working on perhaps the best season of his stellar career with the Los Angeles Angels. Judge has 25 homers and 58 RBIs for the New York Yankees, and Betts is batting .342 with 22 homers for the major league-leading Boston Red Sox. Houston Astros second baseman Jose Altuve led the fan balloting with 4.8 million votes. Baltimore Orioles shortstop Manny Machado, Chicago White Sox first baseman Jose Abreu, Cleveland Indians third baseman Jose Ramirez, Red Sox designated hitter J.D. Martinez and Tampa Bay Rays catcher Wilson Ramos also were voted into the AL lineup. In the National League, Jacob deGrom was selected as the lone representative of the New York Mets. Washington Nationals slugger Bryce Harper was voted into the starting lineup for game at his home ballpark. The 25-year-old is batting just .218 this season, but he has 21 homers and 50 RBIs. Nick Markakis and Matt Kemp will join Harper in the NL outfield. Markakis has been a key performer for the surprising Atlanta Braves, and Kemp’s return to the Los Angeles Dodgers has been a smashing success. The Chicago Cubs will have two starters after catcher Willson Contreras and second baseman Javier Baez each won a close race at their position in fan balloting. Braves first baseman Freddie Freeman, Colorado Rockies third baseman Nolan Arenado and Giants shortstop Brandon Crawford round out the NL starting lineup. ANAHEIM (AP) — The Los Angeles Angels used a two-out walk by Shohei Ohtani and a throwing error on Yasiel Puig to rally for a dramatic 3-2 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday night in the opening game of the Freeway Series. The Angels were down to their last strike in the ninth inning when Ohtani battled back from a 0-2 count all the way to a walk against Kenley Jansen (0-2). Ohtani then stole second and advanced to third on catcher Yasmani Grandal’s thowing error before David Fletcher hit a tying RBI single to left. Ian Kinsler followed with another base hit, and Fletcher scored on Puig’s game-ending error. Blake Parker (2-1) pitched a scoreless inning for the win. The 108 degree temperature set a record at first pitch for a game in Anaheim. The previous record was 106, which happened in 1988 and 2007. The Dodgers wasted a solid start by Kenta Maeda, who struck out nine in 5 2/3 innings. They had won four in a row. Matt Kemp hit run-scoring singles in the fourth and sixth to help the Dodgers jump in front, but the Angels rallied in the sixth. Kinsler and Jose Briceno opened the inning with singles. Kole Calhoun then struck out and Andrelton Simmons flied out before Mike Trout was walked intentionally, loading the bases. Maeda then was called for a balk, allowing Kinsler to score. Justin Upton walked to load the bases again, and Scott Alexander struck out Albert Pujols to end the inning. Maeda and Japanese countryman Ohtani faced each other for the first time in Major League Baseball. Ohtani was 0 for 2 with a strikeout and a groundout. Ohtani went 2 for 7 against Maeda when the two played professional baseball in Japan. Angels starter Felix Pena, a converted reliever, allowed two runs and three hits in 5 1/3 innings. TRAINER’S ROOM Dodgers: LHP Tony Cingrani (left shoulder inflammation) threw a light bullpen of 20 to 25 pitches and then went to Arizona for more rehabilitation … RHP Walker Buehler (right rib micro fracture) threw a bullpen and will throw a five-inning simulated game Sunday morning. UP NEXT Dodgers: RHP Ross Stripling (6-2, 2.27 ERA) starts Saturday night. He allowed four earned runs in six innings in the Dodgers’ 6-4 win over Colorado on Sunday.
