BIG BEAR LAKE (CBSLA) — Authorities are asking for the public’s help to find the driver who hit a woman as she walked across a street in Big Bear Lake and left her severely injured. (credit: San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department) The collision happened at about 8:55 p.m. last Friday on Bartlett Road. SOUTH LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) – A parked van fell into a sinkhole in a South Los Angeles neighborhood early Tuesday morning which was created by a water main break. Nov. 10, 2020. (CBSLA) The sinkhole formed in the 3600 block of South Buckingham Road, sending a van tilting into it. The van, which belongs to a family who reside on the street, was parked at the time and no one was inside. According to the L.A. Department of Water and Power, an eight-inch cast iron main broke, creating the sinkhole. Amber Anderson, who owns the 1993 Dodge Explorer, told CBSLA she slept through the water main break, but was only awoken up by her barking dog. “Came out my front door and realized, wow, my van behind me is inside of a hole,” Anderson said. A neighbor’s security camera captured live footage of the sinkhole opening up and the van falling in. Anderson said this is the second time a sinkhole has opened up on the block. “Three houses down, we had like a smaller sinkhole, where a water line broke again and it made a hole into the ground,” she said. 20 customers were without water service while LADWP crews repaired the main break and sinkhole. It was expected to take at least 12 to 14 hours to conduct repairs, LADWP said. Buckingham Road was closed between Obama and Exposition boulevards. The cause of the water main break was not known. It’s unclear if the van sustained any major damage from the incident.

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — A ceremony was held Tuesday in Central Park ahead of Veterans Day to honor the women who served the nation. Most Veterans Day events have either gone virtual or been canceled because of the coronavirus pandemic, but some groups are still celebrating in smaller numbers outside. The event was held at a special location — a grove of 24 trees spanning from 69th to 71st streets along Fifth Avenue that were planted back in 1925 as a tribute to American women who served during World War I. “When you think of women from World War I who gave their lives, think about it for a second. They didn’t have the right to vote and yet they served their country,” said Mary Caraccioli, chief communications officer for the Central Park Conservancy. “American women have been serving in war zones since the American Revolution, when they dressed up as men so they can serve,” Assemblywoman Jenifer Rajkumar added. Tuesday’s ceremony honored military servicewomen, health care workers and volunteers, like Red Cross members. “Today, we recognize the all-important role of women in the war effort. With millions of men away from home, women filled manufacturing and agriculture positions on the home front,” one speaker said. “Others provided support on the front lines as nurses, doctors, ambulance drivers, translators and, in rare cases, on the battlefield.” “Women also make up approximately 10% of the current veteran population — the fastest growing demographic,” another speaker added. “Ask not what your country can do for you … I wanted to be a part of something greater than myself,” veteran J. Gayle Gamon said. They were joined by Tony Orlando, whose famous song goes, “Tie a yellow ribbon round the old oak tree.” Organizers hoped to wrap 200,000 trees in ribbons — one for every New York City veteran — in time for Veterans Day on Wednesday. So even though there won’t be big parades, there will still be reminders to thank someone who served. NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Mayor Bill de Blasio reminded everyone Tuesday that the city is on the brink of a second wave of the coronavirus pandemic. Efforts to combat the rise started on Staten Island in the morning and soon will begin in New Jersey as well, CBS2’s John Dias reported. Commuters were greeted differently at the Staten Island Ferry. City workers made sure everyone at the terminal had a mask, and understands that free testing at the site starts on Thursday. The answer is yes,” the mayor said. NEWPORT BEACH (CBSLA) – Incumbent Orange County Congressman Harley Rouda conceded Tuesday in the race for the 48th Congressional District seat. The first-term Democrat said his “campaign ends today” against Republican Michelle Steel, the chair of the Orange County Board of Supervisors. And while it isn’t the outcome we had hoped for, it’s never been more important for our leaders to hear the voice of the people, and to accept their judgment. I do,” said Rouda. There was no immediate comment from Steel, who during her campaign said that she ran to prove a “strong voice in Washington, D.C., who will honor promises made and stand up for us and our values.” Tom Emmer, chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee, issued a statement congratulating Steel: “California’s 48th District finally has a congresswoman who puts her constituents first. I look forward to her tireless work on behalf of Orange County.”

SANTA ANA (CBSLA) – Orange County Sheriff’s investigators Tuesday released a new sketch in the hopes of identifying a teen John Doe whose body was found in Trabuco Canyon nearly 24 years ago. (Orange County Sheriff’s Department) The victim, who is believed to have been between 15 and 19 years of age, was found on Dec. 13, 1996, in the wilderness east of Trabuco Creek Road. Authorities believe his body had been there for up to two years, the Orange County Sheriff’s Department reports. Earlier this year, the sheriff’s department partnered with the nonprofit DNA Doe Project to use genealogical DNA technology to determine that the victim was likely Hispanic or Native American in background and may have been from “a remote area in Latin America,” the sheriff’s department said Tuesday in a news release. Investigators have been unable to use familial DNA to try and identify the victim, however, because Latin American populations are “underrepresented in genealogical databases,” OCSD said. A computed tomography scan of his skull was created in order to produce an image speculating what he might have looked like at the time he disappeared. He was estimated at between 5-foot-2 to 5-foot-8 with a medium build. Anyone with information on the case should call OCSD at 714-647-7000.

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) – The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors will again meet Tuesday to decide if it will move forward with a proposal examining whether it has the authority and ability to remove the elected Sheriff Alex Villanueva from his post. (Al Seib/Los Angeles Times/Getty Images) If approved, the motion calls on the board to gather together lawyers, its inspector general, the Civilian Oversight Commission and its acting CEO to look at options for removing or impeaching Villanueva before his term concludes in 2022. The board will also look into whether in the future the position should be appointed, like the Los Angeles Police Department chief, rather than elected. Titled “Report Regarding Options for Removing the Sheriff,” the motion was brought forward by Supervisors Mark Ridley-Thomas and Sheila Kuehl. The Board of Supervisors has been at odds with Sheriff Alex Villanueva since he was elected to the position in 2018. “Under the current sheriff, hard-fought vital progress is being undone, and community trust is rapidly eroding,” the motion states . “While the board has been able to navigate challenging times with previous sheriffs, this sheriff’s actions demonstrate the dire need to explore options for removing a sheriff who refuses oversight or, at a minimum, mitigating damages cause by unacceptable behavior.” Ridley-Thomas and Kuehl also argue that Villanueva has been unable to balance the sheriff’s department budget and has cut youth programs and eliminated the parks services bureau, actions that have also drawn criticism from the deputies’ union. A vote on the matter was postponed by Ridley-Thomas two weeks ago when it appeared there might not be sufficient support for it. The termed-out supervisor — who was elected last week to replace Herb Wesson on the Los Angeles City Council — said he was concerned his colleagues had not had sufficient time to consider the proposal. Supervisor Kathryn Barger said at the Oct. 27 meeting that she was in favor of voters deciding Villanueva’s fate. “Understand that I still stand by my belief that the sheriff is elected, and that in 2022, unless there’s (an)…effort to vacate that seat prior to that, that’s where the voters have a right,” Barger said. Supervisor Janice Hahn plans to oppose the motion because she believes that power is in the hands of the voters, according to spokeswoman Liz Odendahl. Other possibilities to be considered include pulling some of Villanueva’s responsibilities and appointing a county police chief. The board motion comes after the civilian oversight commission called for the sheriff’s resignation last month. Villanueva dismissed the commission’s vote, and accused the group of punishing him for investigating potential corruption. During his comments at the Oct. 27 meeting, Villanueva urged the supervisors to meet with him privately. “We are a county family and when there is collaboration we can do great things,” the sheriff said. “Let’s set aside the past and work out our differences…I look forward to finding common ground we can all stand together on in the interests of public safety and fiscal responsibility.” Though the union that represents rank-and-file deputies has had its own issues with the sheriff failing to confer with them about major staff transfers, it appears for now to support Villanueva.
