NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — It’s a scandal that has shaken the faith of many Catholics — allegations of sexual abuse of minors and seminarians by former Newark Archbishop Theodore McCarrick . Now, a long-awaited Vatican report spells out how rumors of misconduct failed to stop his rise, all the way to the College of Cardinals, CBS2’s Tony Aiello reported Tuesday. WEB EXTRA : Read The Vactican Investigation Report (.pdf) Pope Francis kept a promise by releasing the 461-page report, which attempts to answer a troubling question about McCarrick. “How a man who had rumors swirling about him, about how he liked to sleep with seminarians could nevertheless rise to the top of the Catholic church,” AP religion writer Nicole Winfield said. Charming and well-spoken in five languages, McCarrick was a leading figure in American Catholicism for years. He was the Bishop of Metuchen, Archbishop of Newark, and Cardinal of Washington D.C. Now, the 90-year-old is disgraced, defrocked, and widely viewed as a deceiver. “Tony, I wish I could say you were exaggerating it a little. I don’t think you are,” Timothy Cardinal Dolan said. “(He) deceived the faithful, and at one point perhaps even deceived John Paul II?” Aiello asked. “(McCarrick) was an extraordinarily persuasive, talented, energetic, manipulative, deceitful person who was an accomplished master at keeping this dark side under check and he deceived a lot of people, all the way to the top,” Dolan said. It also faults several bishops for providing incomplete information about McCarrick to the Vatican. “We publish the report with sorrow,” said Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin. McCarrick dismissed earlier anonymous letters accusing him as attempted smears. “He had a tremendous ability to charm people, including presidents of the United States, including popes,” Dolan said. The report says Pope Benedict acted to sideline McCarrick, but never pushed for a full accounting of his misdeeds. Finally in 2017, a victim abused as a minor filed a substantiated complaint with the Archdiocese of New York, and McCarrick’s career ended. Almost 30 years after reports of misconduct first surfaced. The release of the report came a few days before U.S. bishops gather for their annual fall meeting, which has been overshadowed by the McCarrick scandal for two years. BIG BEAR LAKE (CBSLA) — Authorities are asking for the public’s help to find the driver who hit a woman as she walked across a street in Big Bear Lake and left her severely injured. (credit: San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department) The collision happened at about 8:55 p.m. last Friday on Bartlett Road. Detectives say 62-year-old Emillee Wang of Big Bear Lake was crossing the street when she was hit by a pickup truck. Wang suffered severe injuries, according to authorities. The driver did not stop to help Wang. The truck was last seen going south on Bartlett Road, toward the area of Big Bear Lake. It was described as a light-colored, newer model, crew-cab Ford F-150 truck. Anyone with information about this crash or the truck can contact the San Bernardino County sheriff’s Big Bear Station at (909) 866-0100.

SOUTH LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) – A parked van fell into a sinkhole in a South Los Angeles neighborhood early Tuesday morning which was created by a water main break. Nov. 10, 2020. (CBSLA) The sinkhole formed in the 3600 block of South Buckingham Road, sending a van tilting into it. The van, which belongs to a family who reside on the street, was parked at the time and no one was inside. According to the L.A. Department of Water and Power, an eight-inch cast iron main broke, creating the sinkhole. Amber Anderson, who owns the 1993 Dodge Explorer, told CBSLA she slept through the water main break, but was only awoken up by her barking dog. “Came out my front door and realized, wow, my van behind me is inside of a hole,” Anderson said. A neighbor’s security camera captured live footage of the sinkhole opening up and the van falling in. Anderson said this is the second time a sinkhole has opened up on the block. “Three houses down, we had like a smaller sinkhole, where a water line broke again and it made a hole into the ground,” she said. 20 customers were without water service while LADWP crews repaired the main break and sinkhole. It was expected to take at least 12 to 14 hours to conduct repairs, LADWP said. Buckingham Road was closed between Obama and Exposition boulevards. The cause of the water main break was not known. It’s unclear if the van sustained any major damage from the incident.

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — A ceremony was held Tuesday in Central Park ahead of Veterans Day to honor the women who served the nation. Most Veterans Day events have either gone virtual or been canceled because of the coronavirus pandemic, but some groups are still celebrating in smaller numbers outside. The event was held at a special location — a grove of 24 trees spanning from 69th to 71st streets along Fifth Avenue that were planted back in 1925 as a tribute to American women who served during World War I. “When you think of women from World War I who gave their lives, think about it for a second. They didn’t have the right to vote and yet they served their country,” said Mary Caraccioli, chief communications officer for the Central Park Conservancy. “American women have been serving in war zones since the American Revolution, when they dressed up as men so they can serve,” Assemblywoman Jenifer Rajkumar added. A ceremony is underway in Central Park ahead of Veterans Day, honoring the women who served America. Efforts to combat the rise started on Staten Island in the morning and soon will begin in New Jersey as well, CBS2’s John Dias reported. Commuters were greeted differently at the Staten Island Ferry. City workers made sure everyone at the terminal had a mask, and understands that free testing at the site starts on Thursday.
