NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – Police are searching for a man they say tried to rape a woman while she was jogging inside a Bronx park. It happened around 7:50 a.m. Monday at Bronx River Forest park near 204th Street and Webster Avenue. Police said the suspect followed the 35-year-old victim, came up behind her and placed his hand over her mouth and arm across her chest, trying to pull her backwards. She fought him off, yelled for help and kept running farther into the park, police said. Police say this man tried to rape a 35 y/o female jogger yesterday in #Bronx River Forest Park just before 8 am. She fought him off, he's still on the loose. NYPD says rapes are up 34 percent this year: 912 rapes first 6 months of 2018 compared to 680 last year @CBSNewYork pic.twitter.com/5jxSstnQtP — Reena Roy (@reenaroy) July 10, 2018 Police said the woman came across the man again while she was leaving the park and managed to take a picture of him. “Wow, that is scary,” one woman told CBS2’s Reena Roy. “Too many bushes and trees, I’m scared. So I come early and I don’t stay late.” “This is always my greatest fear. I always walk with that in the back of my mind,” another woman added. “It is scary. I don’t want to know that I can’t come out and exercise.” “This is kind of a family park. People come here to run with their dogs, with their kids. So it’s very unfortunate that happened,” Bronx resident Marc Duplessy said. The suspect is described as a Hispanic man, 17 to 25 years old with a slim build. He was last seen wearing a white hooded sweatshirt with a black shirt across his chest, black shorts and white sneakers. The victim was treated for minor injuries. The NYPD insists crime is down overall , but rapes are up 34 percent: 912 from the first six months of 2018 compared to 680 in 2017. “Rape we always known has been an often under-reported crime. Statistically, nationally they say it’s one of the most under-reported crimes there are,” NYPD Chief of Department Terence Monahan said during Tuesday’s briefing on crime statistics in the city. “That’s the one crime that we look at going up that you’ve got to weigh – it’s actually a good thing, because more people are coming forward, especially when we see it in domestic violence cases, because those are the ones that never come forward and now we’re seeing a huge uptick in people coming forward.” Police are offering a $2,500 reward for information leading to an arrest. Anyone with info is asked to call the NYPD’s Crime Stoppers hotline at 1-700-577-TIPS (8477), or for Spanish 1-888-57-PISTA (74782). You can also submit a tip via the Crime Stoppers website , or by texting a tip to 274637 (CRIMES) and then entering TIP577.

Police Investigate Attempted Rape Of Woman Jogging Inside Bronx Park
WASHINGTON, D.C. (CBSNewYork) — President Donald Trump’s pick to fill the vacant Supreme Court seat headed to Capitol Hill to meet with lawmakers on Tuesday. Federal Appeals Court Judge Brett Kavanaugh is an established conservative judge who has written roughly 300 opinions as a judge on the D.C. circuit. He’s making the rounds and meeting with Republican lawmakers, but he’s already facing a lot of opposition ahead of his confirmation hearings. Kavanaugh posed for a photo-op Tuesday morning with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Vice President Mike Pence hours after his nomination . “I think the president made an outstanding nomination and we look forward to the confirmation process and it will unfold over the next few weeks,” McConnell said. “As the president said last night, Judge Brett Kavanaugh is quite simply the most qualified and most deserving nominee to the Supreme Court of the United States,” Pence added. Democratic lawmakers, promising to prevent his confirmation, gathered Tuesday morning outside the Supreme Court. “Now is the time to fight, now. Now is the time for American people to make their voices heard,” said Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer. Schumer pointed to a 2009 article, where Kavanaugh argued “… we should not burden a sitting president with civil suits, criminal investigations, or criminal prosecution.” “At a time when we have the Mueller investigation, Judge Kavanaugh is way at the extreme,” Schumer said. The president took to Twitter earlier Tuesday morning, saying the “Supreme Court pick getting GREAT REVIEWS.” Thank you to all of my great supporters, really big progress being made. Other countries wanting to fix crazy trade deals. Economy is ROARING. Supreme Court pick getting GREAT REVIEWS. New Poll says Trump, at over 90%, is the most popular Republican in history of the Party. Wow! — Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) July 10, 2018 The tweet comes hours after his primetime address announcing Kavanaugh as his choice to fill the seat of retiring Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy . “There is no one in America more qualified for this position and no one more deserving,” Trump said during the announcement. “A judge must be independent and must interpret the law, not make the law,” said Kavanaugh. Kavanaugh, 53, who was joined by his wife and two young daughters, has supported conservative issues ranging from gun rights to anti-abortion cases and sided against net neutrality and many Obama-era EPA regulations. “If confirmed by the Senate, I will keep an open mind in every case,” he said. Getting confirmed will be tough, though. His nomination is expected to set off a fierce battle in the Senate, where Republicans hold a thin majority and Democrats are promising to put up a fight. Kavanaugh’s potential appointment would solidify a conservative majority on the court. “President Trump, with the nomination of Judge Kavanaugh, has fulfilled or is fulfilling two of his campaign promises,” said Schumer. “First, to undo a women’s reproductive freedom, second, to undo ACA. So I will oppose him with everything I’ve got.” Kavanaugh was also on President George W. Bush’s legal team in the 2000 election recount and the Kenneth Starr investigation that led to President Bill Clinton’s impeachment. The Senate is expected to vote on his nomination in the fall.

NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) — Police officers say their training kicked in when they resuscitated a 2-year-old girl who was found unresponsive in a swimming pool in Newark. It happened Sunday afternoon at a home on Third Avenue East, where cops say the little girl was in a small pool wearing two floatation toys and being watched by a family friend. Suddenly, she flipped over and couldn’t lift her head out of the water. Police body cam video shows Newark officers hitting the child on her back as she struggled to breathe on Sunday afternoon. “It was terrifying, absolutely terrifying,” Officer Malikul Aziz said. The dramatic video shows the officers quickly yet calmly getting to work. They were able to clear the girl’s airway before she then threw up food and water, police said. “As my partner mentioned it could have been death,” Officer Shaquille Johnson said. Her full-throated cries were a sign that she was breathing again. “It was a great moment,” Aziz said. “Especially when we knew she was able to breathe comfortably, we knew that we were able to breathe as well too.” The girl was taken to the hospital, where she was treated and released. “These Officers displayed the character and dedication that every Newark Police Division member is committed to in providing outstanding community service,” Newark Public Safety Director Anthony Ambrose said in a statement. “I am proud that these Officers stepped in as if this child was a member of their own family. Today, I speak for the entire City of Newark in giving them our most sincere thanks.” Though they performed like seasoned veterans, Officers Johnson and Aziz are rookies. They both graduated the police academy just seven months ago. (© Copyright 2018 CBS Broadcasting Inc. All Rights Reserved. The Associated Press contributed to this report.)
