REDLANDS (CBSLA) — A woman is in custody after she left her two small children in her car and refusing to break her window to free them. The incident happened Saturday afternoon at the Mountain Grove Shopping Center in Redlands, where witnesses spotted panicked mother Danielle Sulprizio in the parking lot. “I overheard her tell her husband on the phone, ‘I just locked the kids in the car. I was getting the baby’s bottle,’” retail worker Demi Demaio told CBS2 News. Another worker Moriah Madrid saw a distressed Sulprizio and called 911. That’s when she said the mother told her to hang up the phone. “I was, like, ‘I’m not gonna hang up the call,’” Madrid said. She added Sulprizio didn’t want to break her car’s window to take out the children even though the interior of the vehicle registered a sweltering 138 degress, according to Redlands police. “I felt like, ‘Oh, my God! This baby’s dead,’” said Madrid. Witnesses told Redlands police Cpl. Breanna Herrera the children had been in the car for about 15 minutes when she arrived. She ended up smashing the car window to render aid. “The newborn, when I reached into the car seat to try to yank it out, he wasn’t moving or anything,” Madrid said. “The baby wasn’t moving at all. The baby wasn’t crying, the baby’s eyes were not open, the baby’s body was so red.[…] She cared more about her windows than her babies, it was just what got me really upset,” Madrid said, appearing to become emotional. The children were taken to a local hospital and were in stable condition. Sulprizio was arrested for child endangerment. The children were taken into the custody of Child Protective Services. Cpl. Herrera and fellow officers were honored by the City of Redlands for their work on Wednesday. According to KidsAndCars.org , 27 children under the age of 14 have died in hot cars in 2018 alone.

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Dallas Keuchel took a no-hitter into the seventh and finished with 7 2/3 innings of two-hit ball in the Houston Astros’ 3-1 victory over the Los Angeles Angels on Friday night. Justin Upton broke up Keuchel’s bid with two outs in the seventh when his line drive escaped the glove of leaping Astros shortstop Marwin Gonzalez. The Angel Stadium scorer awarded a hit instead of an error on what would have been a fine defensive play if Gonzalez had held on. Keuchel (8-8) shrugged it off and improved to 5-0 in his last seven appearances for the Astros (65-35), who are off to the second-best start through 100 games in franchise history. Josh Reddick had an RBI triple for the Astros. Only last season’s World Series champions got off to a better start than these Astros, who are 15 games ahead of the injury-plagued Angels (49-49) in the AL West. Keuchel retired the Angels’ first nine batters before walking David Fletcher to open the fourth. The heavily bearded lefty then retired the Angels’ next 11 batters before Upton’s hit with solid defensive help, getting within seven outs of the first no-hitter by a left-handed pitcher in the history of the Astros, who have 11 no-hitters. Yuli Gurriel made an impressive diving catch on Upton’s liner to first base to end the fourth inning, and Kyle Tucker plucked Andrelton Simmons’ sinking liner right before it hit the left-field grass leading off the seventh. Mike Trout went 0 for 3 and Shohei Ohtani struck out three times against Keuchel, who left to a big ovation after Jabari Blash’s sacrifice fly in the eighth. Gonzalez nearly made the play to save the no-hitter, but the 6-foot-1 shortstop couldn’t quite hang onto Upton’s liner. Houston’s regular shortstop, injured Carlos Correa, is 6-foot-4. Ian Kinsler added a clean leadoff single in the eighth and scored on Blash’s first RBI for the Angels. Hector Rondon pitched the ninth for his ninth save. He got a generous call to strike out Trout, who went 0 for 4 for only the second time since June 8. The Astros piled up five singles and scored two runs off Tyler Skaggs (7-6) in the first two innings before Reddick’s drive down the right-field line scored Evan Gattis in the third for a 3-0 lead. Skaggs settled into six innings of six-hit ball in yet another strong start, but the left-hander took just his second loss since May. SHOHEI THROWS Before Ohtani went 0 for 3 as the Angels’ designated hitter, he played catch in the outfield for the second straight day since getting approval to begin a throwing program. The two-way rookie took six weeks off from throwing to rest the sprained ligament in his pitching elbow after getting treatment with platelet-rich plasma and stem cells. The Angels hope he’ll pitch again this season. TRAINER’S ROOM Astros: Correa won’t return from his lower back injury until after this five-game road trip. He has been out since June 25, and he hasn’t resumed baseball activities while making “slow but steady progress,” manager AJ Hinch said. Angels: Albert Pujols is scheduled to return to the lineup Monday, manager Mike Scioscia said. The 38-year-old slugger went on the disabled list July 13 with left knee inflammation, one day after hitting his 629th and 630th career homers. … Reliever Jim Johnson pitched a scoreless rehab inning for Triple-A Salt Lake. He has been out since June 12 with a lumbar strain, but should be back in LA’s bullpen shortly. UP NEXT Astros: Justin Verlander (9-5, 2.29 ERA) went winless in his final six starts before the All-Star break, but has already beaten the Angels twice this year, allowing two runs in 16 innings. Angels: Nick Tropeano (3-4, 4.83 ERA) returns from a 31-game injury absence with right shoulder inflammation. Although he has been effective when healthy this season, he has never beaten the Astros in his career, and hasn’t won at Angel Stadium since May 18, 2016. (© Copyright 2018 The Associated Press. CORONA DEL MAR (CBSLA) — A dramatic rescue Friday at a popular Orange County beach after a 10-year-old boy fell off a steep cliff. As Rachel Kim reports, police say the boy fell 30 feet from a cliff in the Pirate’s Cove area of Corona del Mar late Friday afternoon. There were a lot of people around enjoying the beach when it happened. Paramedics say the child was conscious and breathing at the time of transport but the first person to come to his aid was a critical care nurse on the beach with friends. She said she found him laying on his back. He told her his name and said he was 10-years-old. She looked over him and didn’t see any obvious external injuries or bleeding. He told her his right-side stomach and ribs hurt but was able to respond and move his hands and feet. “I think he was lucky,” said witness Sheri Riggs. “If he would have literally fallen on his head he could be completely paralyzed or quadriplegic for that matter. 30 foot drop at any angle. Like I said just knowing that children have a little bit of resiliency. A give and take in their bones and the fact that he landed on a softer surface such as the sand. Hopefully very much I pray that he is doing very well.” Authorities said the boy was taken to Children’s Hospital of Orange. No word on his condition as of Friday night.

STUDIO CITY (CBSLA) — A Fountain Valley man convicted of kidnapping and torturing the owner of an Orange County marijuana dispensary will spend the rest of his life in jail. Kyle Handley, 39, was sentenced to two consecutive life terms in prison Friday for abducting, torturing and sexually mutilating the owner of a medical pot shop, thinking the man had vast amounts of cash. On October 12, 2012, Handley and two other suspects Hossein Nayeri and Ryan Kevorkian kidnapped the shop owner and his female companion from the man’s Newport Beach home. They had been staking out the owner near Palm Springs for weeks and believed the man was burying cash in the desert at the time they committed the crime. Prosecutors said the suspects drove the couple out to the desert, torturing the man with a blowtorch in the process. Eventually, they cut off the man’s penis, poured bleach over him, then took the man’s member so it could not be reattached. The couple was abandoned in the desert before the woman, still bound with zip ties, ran more than a mile to flag down police. The man survived his injuries. Handley was convicted of kidnapping, mayhem and torture in January. Nayer, who was extradited from Prague where he’d fled, and Kevorkian have pleaded not guilty. NEW YORK (AP) — Yoenis Cespedes homered in his return from the disabled list, Noah Syndergaard won his second straight start since coming back from an injury but left after a drop in velocity, and the New York Mets beat the Yankees 7-5 Friday night in a Subway Series opener. Robert Gsellman pitched two innings for his fifth save as Mets closer Jeurys Familia sat in the bullpen. Manager Mickey Callaway said he was told mid-game not to use Familia because the team was close to trading him. New York Mets’ Yoenis Cespedes bats against the New York Yankees during their game at Yankee Stadium on July 20, 2018. (Photo by Al Bello/Getty Images) Cespedes had been out since May 13 with a strained right hip flexor, the latest in a string of lower body injuries that have limited him to 119 games in 1 ½ seasons since signing a $110 million, four-year contract. He homered off an again ineffective Domingo German (2-6) to put the Mets ahead 4-0 in the third, sending a 3-0 pitch off the left-field foul pole. Cespedes is 8 for 10 with a pair of homers in his big league career on 3-0 counts. He also singled in the sixth — it would have driven in a run had Brandon Nimmo not been thrown out trying to stretch a double into a triple. German was optioned to the minors after the game. He’ll be replaced in the rotation by Luis Cessa. Syndergaard (6-1) returned just before the All-Star break after seven weeks on the disabled list caused by a strained right index finger. He allowed one run and eight hits in five innings, leaving after a velocity drop of about 2 mph in his final inning. Callaway and a trainer came to the mound with one out in the fifth and looked at the finger, and Callaway and pitching coach Dave Eiland had a lengthy discussion with Syndergaard in the dugout after the inning. Callaway said after the game that Syndergaard was a little tired but his finger was fine. Syndergaard has not had a 1-2-3 inning in any of his 10 innings since returning. His four strikeouts increased his total to 501 in 438 2/3 innings, and he bettered Dwight Gooden (445 1/3 innings) as the fastest Mets pitcher to 500 strikeouts. Michael Conforto had three RBIs for the Mets, including an insurance run with a ninth-inning sacrifice fly off A.J. Cole. Every Yankees starter had a hit, and they had a runner on in every inning but went 2 for 13 with runners in scoring position and stranded 14. The Yankees dropped 5 1/2 games behind AL East-leading Boston, their biggest deficit since mid-April. “I expect us to go out and be great,” manager Aaron Boone said before the game. “That’s kind of our expectation when we embarked on this season and that continues to be the expectation. And I think it’s a realistic expectation.” To fulfill their goals, more pitching like is necessary. German gave up four runs, five hits and three walks in 3 2/3 innings, dropping to 0-2 in his last five starts. The Mets started 11-1 but entered 39-55, the fewest wins in the National League. Familia and Asdrubal Cabrera are both eligible for free agency and could be dealt. “We have to evaluate where we are as an organization and what we look like going into the offseason, so we know what to expect and what maybe our needs are,” Callaway said before the game. Run-scoring doubles by Cabrera, Conforto and Jose Bautista built a 3-0 lead in the first. Giancarlo Stanton’s sacrifice fly cut the Yankees’ deficit to 4-1 in the third, but Conforto and Devin Mesoraco hit RBI singles for a 6-1 lead in fifth against Adam Warren, who walked the bases loaded. Seth Lugo allowed Neil Walker’s two-run double in the sixth but retired Miguel Andujar on an inning-ending flyout that left the bases loaded in the seventh. Brett Gardner reached when shortstop Amed Rosario missed his one-out grounder in the eighth, and the Yankees closed when Didi Gregorius hit an RBI double and Stanton had a run-scoring groundout. With runners at the corners and two outs, Gsellman struck out Gary Sanchez. The catcher was 1 for 5 in his first game since injuring a groin on June 24 and ran very gingerly. Gsellman walked Walker with two outs in the ninth, then got the save by inducing Gardner to ground into a forceout. EYES OPEN The Yankees had a scout at RHP Nathan Eovaldi’s start against Miami. CROWD SOURCING The 16th home sellout this season, a season-high 47,175, was three more than last year and matched 2014 for the most since 20 in 2011, the high at new Yankee Stadium. TRAINER’S ROOM Mets: OF Jay Bruce, who hasn’t played since June 17 because of a sore right hip, still isn’t swinging a bat. Yankees: 2B Gleyber Torres, out since straining his right hip on July 4, is scheduled to start an injury rehabilitation assignment Saturday at Class A Tampa and rejoin Yankees on Wednesday at Tampa Bay. … OF Clint Frazier was put back in a concussion protocol and placed on the 7-day DL after making a diving catch for Triple-A Scranton Wilkes-Barre on Thursday night and leaving after one inning. Frazier sustained a concussion early in spring training, didn’t play his first minor league game until April 26 and his first big league game until May 198. … OF Jacoby Ellsbury, sidelined with a variety of injuries since spring training, still hasn’t progressed to baseball activities. “We hold out hope that he can get back at some point,” Boone said. UP NEXT LHP Steven Matz (4-7, 3.38) starts Saturday for the Mets and RHP Sonny Gray (6-7, 5.46) for the Yankees. (© Copyright 2018 The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved. Cespedes Homers In Return; Mets Top Yankees In Subway Series Opener
MILWAUKEE (AP) — Manny Machado singled twice and walked twice in his debut with the Los Angeles Dodgers, who used a tiebreaking RBI single by Chris Taylor to beat the sliding Milwaukee Brewers 6-4 on Friday night. NL West-leading Los Angeles was held in check by Wade Miley before going ahead to stay in the seventh. Moments after Yasmani Grandal was cut down at the plate on a nice pickup by catcher Manny Pina, Taylor singled in Chase Utley to give the Dodgers a 2-1 lead. Machado’s second hit then set up Max Muncy’s run-scoring double off Taylor Williams (0-3). Enrique Hernandez added a three-run homer in the ninth as Los Angeles celebrated the trade for Machado with its fifth win in six games. Rich Hill (3-4) struck out nine in six innings, and Kenley Jansen got three outs for his 28th save. Milwaukee returned from the break to an emotional apology from reliever Josh Hader for years-old racist and homophobic tweets that surfaced during the All-Star Game. Miley tossed six effective innings in his 200th career start and Jesus Aguilar hit his NL-best 25th homer in the eighth, but the Brewers dropped their seventh straight game. Christian Yelich hit a two-run triple in the ninth, but Jansen struck out Aguilar swinging for the final out. With his teammates standing behind him during a news conference, the 24-year-old Hader said the tweets — which included a slur used to disparage African-Americans — “were never my beliefs. I was young. I was saying stuff out of just ignorance and that’s just not what I meant.” Hader is going to participate in diversity and inclusion initiatives in addition to sensitivity training, according to Major League Baseball. The hard-throwing lefty did not get into the game against Los Angeles. Machado joined the Dodgers after he was acquired in a blockbuster trade with Baltimore on Wednesday. The Brewers also were in the mix for the All-Star slugger, but the Dodgers reeled him in with a package of five prospects headed by slugger Yusniel Diaz. Machado started at shortstop and batted second, but manager Dave Roberts said he might play third at some point and he could try him in the third slot in the lineup as well. He grounded a single into right field in his first at-bat. He also walked in the third and fifth, and flied out to right in the ninth. Machado’s walk in the third helped load the bases with one out, and Taylor scampered home on a passed ball for Pina. But Matt Kemp then bounced into an unusual 1-3-4 double play, with Aguilar catching Muncy trying to scramble back to the bag at second. Milwaukee also hurt itself on the bases. Keon Broxton was caught off second on Miley’s base hit in the fifth, and Miley was thrown out at home when he tried to score from first on Yelich’s tying RBI double. DOWN ON THE FARM Los Angeles optioned outfielder Andrew Toles to Triple-A Oklahoma City to make room for Machado on the roster. Right-hander Walker Buehler was slated to throw a five-inning simulated game with the Dodgers’ top minor league affiliate, according to Roberts. Buehler could rejoin the major league club next week. TRAINER’S ROOM Dodgers: INF Justin Turner was held out with an adductor injury. “I would say a little bit more on the hope that he can start tomorrow,” Roberts said. “Expectation is a little bit, just a little bit under that.” Brewers: Pina was reinstated from the 10-day disabled list. He had been sidelined by a left biceps strain. … Manager Craig Counsell said OF Ryan Braun (back strain) could come off the DL on Saturday, depending on how he responds to his pregame workout. UP NEXT Dodgers left-hander Clayton Kershaw (3-4, 2.74 ERA) and Brewers right-hander Chase Anderson (6-7, 3.78 ERA) get the ball on Saturday. Kershaw is 5-4 with a 2.95 ERA in 12 career starts against Milwaukee. Anderson is winless in three July starts with a 1.65 ERA. (© Copyright 2018 The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved. LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) — Actor Anthony Anderson is under criminal investigation by the LAPD for allegedly assaulting a woman, according to multiple reports. The star of ABC’s “Black-ish” denies the allegation. According to celebrity news site The Blast, the alleged victim filed a police report with the LAPD Hollywood Division earlier this year following an event she catered for the actor. “It’s unfortunate that anyone can file a police report whether it is true or false,” Anderson’s rep said in a statement. “The authorities have not contacted Anthony or any of his representatives about this matter. Anthony unequivocally disputes the claim.” Anderson is set to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame later this year.

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – A war hero’s Purple Heart that had been lost for 70 years brought together a long-lost family in the Bronx. At 84 years old, Florinne Ambramowitz hadn’t thought about her uncle’s Purple Heart since it was posthumously awarded to him in 1944. Rubin Keltch was killed in the Navy during World War II. He was 24 years old. “Uncle Ruby was on a ship called the U.S.S. Plymouth. (It) was stationed right outside of New Jersey. We didn’t realize that the Germans were so close to our country, and a German torpedo hit his ship,” Ambramowitz told CBS2’s Ali Bauman. “He saved at least a dozen men, continuing going back into the sinking ship that was on fire to save people, and literately everyone made it out except for him,” said Zachariah Fike, of Purple Hearts Reunited. Ambramowitz isn’t sure who accepted the Purple Heart on her uncle’s behalf. After all, she was only 11 years old at the time. But somehow, it ended up at an estate sale in Vermont four months ago. “I saw there was a name on the back, I Googled it,” Jeff Kauffman said. Kauffman called the Purple Hearts Reunited foundation to track down the war hero’s relatives. They didn’t just find one niece, they found two! “I knew I was named for him, and my parents had told me about him,” said Keltch’s other niece, Ronnie Connors. The first cousins both grew up in the Bronx, but their fathers were estranged. “We didn’t know each other,” Connors said. “I thought it was a scam,” said Ambramowitz. “I did.” Ambramowitz was 11 when a little park below the 4 train was renamed in her uncle’s honor. On Friday, she was back – 74-years-later. “It’s a great honor to pass this back to you, so you can pass it back to the family,” Fike said, handing over the Purple Heart. Now, thanks to a piece of family history, new family is found. “A piece of my heart is filled in,” said Connors.
