Special Guest Shows Up To Softball Tournament Honoring Yonkers Athlete Killed In 2015
YONKERS, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) – A softball tournament raised money Saturday in honor of a well-known athlete from Yonkers killed in a drive-by shooting. As CBS2’s Clark Fouraker reported, one man came all the way from Chicago to be there. Michael Nolan was a standout athlete and prospect to be drafted by the Oakland Athletics. A stray bullet hit and killed him in a fast food restaurant parking lot in October 2015. “They loved him, he loved them, and he would have been right there playing in any tournament,” said his mother, Donna Nolan . “It’s a bittersweet feeling, because you feel good doing it and you know that’s what he would want, but then it’s also like wow this is why I’m here, because my brother is not here anyone,” his brother, Jimmy Nolan , added. Michael Nolan’s legacy lives on even more in the man who received his pancreas, Jerry Russell. He visited the softball tournament from Chicago, meeting the Nolan family for the first time. “Believe it or not, I feel like I’m part of him. Whenever I can’t eat a food – maybe that came from Michael, I’m not sure. I feel like I’m close with Michael,” he said. All the money raised from the tournament will go toward helping other young people, including eight scholarship recipients – one from every public high school in Yonkers. “You pick the right applicant that’s got it in his heart, does the right thing,” said Donna Nolan. Teams played softball and tailgated Saturday, and a number of community businesses donated to the cause. “We’re hoping to help some of the inner city youth kids make something out of themselves and stay out of trouble, stay out of the gangs,” Yonkers resident Tom Lori said. The event also had a table for a gun take-back program with the Yonkers Police Department. The family said it plans to have another tournament – this time a basketball one – in the coming months. Russell said next year he’ll bring a team of his own to play.

BRANSON, Missouri (CNN) — Tia Coleman’s thoughts as she struggled to swim to the surface of the lake were focused on her family. She and 10 of her relatives were on a family vacation from Indiana, taking a tour Thursday of Table Rock Lake near the Missouri tourist ho tspot of Branson. A treacherous squall sank the boat, sending Coleman down into cold, deep water. She knew she had to go up to get to safety and to help her children. “I said, ‘Lord, please, I’ve got to get to my babies. I’ve got to get to my babies,” she said Saturday at a news conference at at Cox Medical Center Branson, where she has been hospitalized since the incident that took 17 lives, including her husband, three children and five other members of her family. Her children have always loved to swim, Coleman said. They had taken vacations to other lakes and to beaches. “In our family, my oldest son is autistic so a lot of things normal families do, we don’t always do,” she said. They went on the duck boat because her eldest could be himself on the boat, she said. Passengers were told there was a storm coming before they went out on the water, Coleman said. The captain mentioned life jackets before they went onto the lake, she added, but he said, “you won’t need them so we didn’t grab them.” Coleman said she thinks if she had been able to get a life jacket to her children — she had a son sitting next to her — she could have saved them. “I felt like, if I was able to get a life jacket I could have saved my babies because they could have at least floated up to the top and somebody could have grabbed them. And I wasn’t able to do that,” she said. Coleman told reporters that she hit her head as she tried to exit the boat, possibly butting up against the canopy. “The harder I was kicking to the top, I was pulled down,” she said. As she lost hope of surviving, Coleman just let go and started floating. She felt warmer water closer to the surface and reached out her hand. When her head emerged from the lake, she looked around and saw a big riverboat docked nearby, but she didn’t see anyone from her family. All of them but a nephew had perished. Coleman felt hands reaching down for her and then she realized she was being pulled out of the water. When asked whether she is happy she made it out alive, Coleman said she doesn’t know yet and only time will tell. But she thinks there is a reason she survived. “God must have something for me because there’s no way I should be here,” she said. Duck Boat Accident Survivor Talks About Losing 9 Family Members
ANAHEIM (CBSLA) – A man in his 50s who was allegedly acting erratically was shot and wounded by Anaheim police during a pursuit Saturday morning. According to Anaheim police spokesman Shane Carringer, at 9:44 a.m., officers were called to the 500 block of W. West Street on a report of a man acting erratically. Officers arrived to find the suspect sitting his car, which was parked outside his family’s home. The suspect then drove away, prompting a slow-speed chase, Carringer said. At some point during the pursuit, an officer-involved shooting occurred, Carringer said. The suspect then drove back to his home. When officers were finally able to remove the suspect from the car, they discovered he had a gunshot wound. He was taken by ambulance to the University of California, Irvine Medical Center, where his condition was unknown. The suspect’s name and the circumstances of the shooting were not confirmed. Police did not disclose if the man was armed or what prompted officers to shoot him.
