TOM’S RIVER, N.J. (CBSNewYork) – A restaurant was the scene of a sublime act of gratitude: A generous gesture with no words spoken, no names exchanged, just a Good Samaritan covering the food tab for a group of volunteer EMTs as a thank you. The bill simply said: “Paid, thank you, for all you do, have a great day, recovering addict.” It’s a message Capt. Alyssa Golembeski of the Toms River First Aid Squad will never forget, written on the back of a receipt that she now hangs in her office, reports CBS2’s Dick Brennan. “I am honestly just so humbled and so astounded because it is something I never would have expected,” she said. The squad’s captain and five other emergency medical technicians went out for a bite to eat last Friday after a long overnight shift. It was 7 a.m. at the IHOP on Route 37 East when the manager walked over. “He said, ‘I just wanted to let you guys know,’ and he hands us the receipt. That somebody paid your bill,” said Golembeski. That somebody – an anonymous woman who covered their nearly $78 tab – left before the volunteer EMTs could see her face. All they know is she is a recovering addict. “She is probably local, so there is a really good chance that either one of my crews, or the other five volunteer crews, were the ones that helped her get the help she needed to start the process of recovery,” said Golembeski. Her crew members say they respond to overdoses often. “The opiod crisis is terrible across the country but particularly in New Jersey,” she said. “To see there is an addict who is actively in recovery is just amazing to me.” “People need to realize that it a disease and these people do deserve to be cared for,” said First Lt. Keith Rodriguez. “It’s nice to see that you care for someone and they want to give back to you.” This charity has never happened to these volunteers, but the owner of the IHOP says it actually occurs frequently at the restaurant – usually though with veterans. “It’s just treating people like human beings and helping each other,” said restaurant owner George Ebinger. The crew hopes to one day thank this woman in person, but they realize they may never have the opportunity. “Part of the process is not coming forward and not doing this for your own gratification but make amends with the people you may have hurt,” said Golembeski. “So if she would like to come forward, I would love it but I understand if she doesn’t want to.” The restaurant owner says his manager knows who the woman is, because he cashed her out, but he refuses to say since she wants to remain anonymous.

MADISON, N.J. (CBSNewYork) – MADISON, N.J. (CBSNewYork) – An alternate way of getting to the train station may be just down the road in New Jersey. Soon a select group of commuters could be powered by electric scooters, reports CBS2’s Natalie Duddridge. A transit company called Boxcar teamed up with the mayor of Madison to give people a new option for traveling a short distance from home to the train station and solve the commuter parking problem “One way to get cars out of downtown and people onto mass transit might be electric scooters,” said Boxcar SEO Joe Colangelo. “That’s really our target market here in the suburbs.” Online applicants will be chosen to test out the proposal this fall. Riders will each get a scooter for free that can go up to 15 miles on a single charge. “We’re going to require you to have a driver’s license and to participate in a safety training session and to wear a helmet,” said Colangelo. Safety was one of the issues the mayor wanted to tackle before green lighting the pilot program. “One of our council members was in China and talked about the fact that they have a share program and that their scooters were all over the place, and he was concerned,” said Madison mayor Robert Conley. Boxcar says it will build a secure storage facility inside the train station. When users return, they can ride it home, keep it overnight and charge it back up. Boxcar hopes to expand to 20 different New Jersey towns by summer 2019. To take part in the e-scooter program, visit boxcarapp.com/scooters .

WASHINGTON (CBSNewYork/AP) — The Democratic party’s newest star, New York City congressional candidate Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, visited the Capitol Tuesday to meet with lawmakers who may soon be colleagues. The 28-year-old former bartender, who defeated one of the most powerful House Democrats last month, had lunch with California Democratic Rep. Ro Khanna and met with several members of the Congressional Progressive Caucus. Khanna was the only member of Congress to endorse Ocasio-Cortez, a self-described democratic socialist, before her upset victory over Rep. Joe Crowley, a member of the House Democratic leadership. Khanna called Ocasio-Cortez “a bold champion for progressive values” and said he looks forward to working with her in Congress. Another New York Democrat, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, did not meet with Ocasio-Cortez, but said he was not concerned that her brand of politics could drag down Democrats in less liberal states. “On economic issues, Democrats are united in a very strong way,” Schumer told reporters. “We’re all for improving health care and lowering the cost, … making it easier for middle-class people and people trying to get there to get a good job. The unity on issues is very strong.” Hawaii Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, a member of the progressive caucus, said she talked with Ocasio-Cortez for about 15 minutes in her office. “It was nice to meet her,” Gabbard said. The caucus co-chairs, Arizona Rep. Raul Grijalva and Wisconsin Rep. Mark Pocan, also met separately with Ocasio-Cortez. A spokesman for Pocan said they discussed possible committee assignments, what she hoped to work on in Congress and how the progressive caucus could work with her. Ocasio-Cortez has caused a stir in Democratic politics since her surprise victory. She has emerged as the face of a growing democratic socialist movement that emphasizes government-paid health care for all, a $15 minimum wage, free college tuition and the abolition of the federal department of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, also known as ICE. Ocasio-Cortez campaigned last week in Kansas, headlining a rally with Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders that drew a crowd of more than 3,000 in a suburb of Kansas City. Democrats’ Rising Star Meets With Lawmakers On Capitol Hill
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Everyone has a different suggestion of what you should eat to prevent heart disease, the number one killer of Americans. It can be confusing, and even more confusing is how the answer from experts seems to keep changing. A few things don’t change, though, if you want to prevent heart disease. First, don’t smoke and be physically active. Where it gets confusing is what to eat and what not to eat, but new research seems to reveal the bottom line. Fresh fruits and vegetables are a must for a healthy diet, both to prevent heart disease and cancer. Then there’s the overall rules of thumb to keep in mind for all your eating. “Before you reach for a box or a package of microwaveable something or other, just try your best to eat the unprocessed and minimally processed version of plant foods and limit the animal products if consuming them at all,” Dr. Andrew Freeman from National Jewish Health said. The recommendations come from a new study in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology which found that consuming unsweetened coffee tea, and even low-to-moderate amounts of alcohol can be good for your heart. Dr. Freeman lead the research, and says it’s best to steer clear of anything with added sugar. Go easy on butter and cheese, which are both a major source of salt and artery clogging saturated fat in the American diet. “When you go out to dinner, not only do they put cheese on the bread, they bring out butter, they add more cheese, and before long you have five, six servings of dairy at dinner,” Dr. Freeman said. “That’s a harmful way to eat.” Legumes and beans are a great source of complex carbohydrates and protein. Fish and fish oil capsules are good sources of lean protein and omega-3 fatty acids, but some can be high in heavy metals so read the label. When it comes to red meats, it’s best to keep it to small and only occasional portions. There’s growing evidence that seaweed and fermented food like kimchi can be beneficial to your heart, but most vitamin supplements aren’t worth the money unless you know you’re deficient in a vitamin.

Study Sets The Record Straight On What Foods Help Prevent Heart Disease
WASHINGTON, DC (CBSNewYork) – Flying cars were once just science fiction fantasy, but now several companies are developing vehicles that can glide through the skies. On Capitol Hill lawmakers held a hearing on the technology and found out just how close it is. “Today we’re employing 150 employees across three locations in the U.S.,” said Anna Mracek Dietrich, co-founder of Terrfugia. Dietrich expects her company’s flying car, called the Transition, to be on the market next year. “I think this is a very exciting opportunity for technology to really benefit society,” she said. “I know there’s been a lot of hype around flying cars for generations really but I think we are very close.” The street legal car would take off from an airport, but experts see a day when the vehicles hit the skies from anywhere. Uber plans to create an airborne ride hailing service with machines that can fly themselves at speeds up to 200 miles per hour. “We are targeting 2020 as the date for the start of prototype testing in our two partner cities in the U.S, Dallas-Fort Worth and Los Angeles,” said Dr. Eric Allison, head of aviation programs for Uber. Members of congress says there are major challenges to address before flying cars can get off the ground in large numbers. NASA is studying what regulations need to be adopted so the average driver can start flying. “Assuring the safety of these vehicles for operation in densely populated urban areas will be a major challenge,” said Dr. Jaiwon Shin of the NASA Aeronautics Research Mission Directorate. The Terrafugia transition operates similar to a plane and owners would need a sport pilot license operate it. But the company hopes to eventually have autonomous vehicles that can pull out of the garage and take off vertically. It could change the way we commute and bring an end to the traffic jam.

At Long Last, Flying Cars Ready To Land Into Reality
TRENTON, N.J. (CBSNewYork) – In the midst of intense budget negotiations, New Jersey Senate President Steve Sweeney introduced a constitutional amendment that would strip some of the governor’s budget powers. The proposal from would shift responsibility over revenue projections from the governor to a three-member panel consisting of state representatives and outside experts, reports CBS2’s Meg Baker. “This is not one we agree on,” said Gov. Phil Murphy . “In my humble opinion, (it) has to be and will continue to be in my opinion the chief executor of the state part of responsibility. It’s checks and balances realty that’s worked really well.” “Too much volatility in budget process right now,” said Sweeny. “Working with the administration, legislature, independent body, we’ll come up with a number and then we know they’re the numbers, instead of saying it’s something that it’s not and haggling inflate numbers, deflate numbers – more predictable forecasting system.” The current budgeting process has been in place for 71 years, and some question the need to change. “What do you say to people who say this is Dems against Phil Murphy?” said Sweeney. “Not true, governors come and go, this just fixes process.” “One individual should not have sole authority to certify numbers,” he said. Some New Jersey residents say they are looking for greater efficiency. “Anything that will improve conditions something should be tried,” said Susan Pfreffer of Edgewater. “Good to have another person, specially from outside,” said Savadore Nutley. “If want to expedite things, I think third-party can be helpful.” New Jersey State Treasurer Elizabeth Muoio, a Democrat, says Sweeney’s plan threatens the balance of power. She says it ignores the informal consensus process that already exists in the state. Both houses of the Legislature must approve the proposed amendment by a three-fifths majority before Aug. 6 to get the question in front of voters this year. Even if the senate does so this week, it appears unlikely the assembly will take the measure up in time.

ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) — Pope Francis has chosen a local Long Islander to help lead the Diocese of Rockville Centre. Msgr. Richard Garth Henning was born and raised in Nassau County and spent summers kayaking and swimming in the Great South Bay in Suffolk County. Locals say his approach is just what the church needs. Moments before his ordination, Henning credited his birthplace as a reason for attaining one of the highest honors in the Catholic church. “I am a local boy, I love Long Island,” he said. “It’s been my home, a great place of joy with my family and friends.” Henning grew up one of five children in Valley Stream, all of whom were products of Holy Name of Mary. He earned high honors at Chamindae High School while working on the student newspaper. The proud graduate of the class of 1982 was involved in nearly every after school activity. School President Brother Thomas Cleary calls him a “humble guy you take a walk with.” “You sense in a conversation he’s a spiritual thinker and a really knowledgeable, intellectual man,” Cleary added. Parishioners at St. Peter of Alcantara in Port Washington, the first parish Henning served in, say they knew the newly ordained auxiliary bishop was going places. “We’re so proud of him,” parishioner Katie Duhig said. “I’m proud to know him.” As a parish priest, Henning spoke Italian, French, Greek, and Hebrew but no Spanish until he was assigned in Port Washington, where parishioners helped him become fluent. “He’s deeply pastoral, a son — an adopted son of our beautiful Hispanic Catholic community,” Rockville Centre Bishop John Barres said. The Pope appointed Henning to the elevated position. 27 bishops joined Timothy Cardinal Dolan, who proclaimed the day one of “hope and promise.” Bishop Henning will now help lead one of the larges dioceses in the nation, consisting of one and a half million Catholics.
