(CBS News) — Another Democrat is adding his name to the list of those who won’t vote for Nancy Pelosi to lead the party if he wins in November. Max Rose , the Democratic nominee in New York’s 11th Congressional District, told CBSN on Tuesday he will not cast his vote for the current House Democratic leader. Rose is running against Republican Rep. Dan Donovan in the only New York City congressional district President Trump won in 2016. Rose’s district encompasses Staten Island and parts of Brooklyn. Asked if he would support Pelosi, Rose had a simple answer — “No.” “I believe that the Democratic Party is in urgent need of new leadership,” he continued. “The party has lost the trust of voters, not only in my district, but throughout the country, and believe me, if you separate the parties and you just look at our policies — infrastructure, equitable growth, lowering per capita health care costs — those policies have massive support. But we’ve got to move towards being also a party that can garner people’s trust and keep it, and we’re not going to accomplish that without new leadership.” Rose didn’t venture to say which Democrat he would support instead of Pelosi. Rose also said he dismisses the notion that his district is too conservative to flip. “I reject the idea that my district is conservative or liberal, Democrat or Republican,” Rose told CBSN. “What we see consistently from Staten Islanders and folks living in southern Brooklyn is really what we see throughout the country, which is that people wanna vote for the person, not the party. They want an independent fighter, an independent leader, someone who is gonna do what they say down in Washington D.C. and they certainly haven’t seen that from my opponent Dan Donovan and they haven’t seen that from politicians on both sides of the aisle for more than a generation now.” A growing number of Democrats running for Congress this year are saying they wouldn’t support Pelosi if they win office, and instead will push for new blood. Clarke Tucker, a Democrat hoping to take an Arkansas congressional seat held by a Republican, released an ad emphasizing that he wouldn’t vote for Pelosi. Conor Lamb , the Democrat who beat Republican Rick Saccone in a Pennsylvania special election earlier this year, said he won’t cast his bid for Pelosi, citing the need for new blood. Others have been noncommittal. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez , a rising star in the Democratic Party after she defeated Democratic Rep. Joe Crowley, told CBS News’ “Face the Nation” recently she wouldn’t rule out supporting Pelosi, but was less than committal. “I mean she is the current party leader, absolutely,” Ocasio-Cortez told “Face the Nation” moderator Margaret Brennan. “And I look forward to be parting–to be part of that conversation and, and winning back the House. There is no decision about the party leader until we win the House first.”

(AP) — Masahiro Tanaka pitched a three-hitter, Austin Romine drove in two runs as the replacement for again-injured catcher Gary Sanchez and the New York Yankees beat the Tampa Bay Rays 4-0 on Tuesday night. Tanaka (8-2) retired his first 12 batters before C.J. Cron singled leading off the fifth. He struck out nine and walked one, improving to 6-0 on the road. It was the sixth major league complete game and third shutout for Tanaka, his first complete game since a three-hit shutout at Boston on April 27 last year. Tanaka walked Ji-Man Choi after Cron’s fifth-inning hit but escaped damage by striking out Daniel Robertson and getting speedy Mallex Smith to hit into a 3-6-1 double play. Romine hit a run-scoring groundout in the fifth inning and a sacrifice fly during the seventh. Sanchez was put back on the 10-day disabled list before the game because of a strained right groin, a day after failing to hustle on a pair of key plays in a 7-6 loss to Tampa Bay. Sanchez missed 20 games from June 25 to July 19 because of the groin injury. (CNN) — Presidential candidate Donald Trump is heard on tape discussing with his attorney Michael Cohen how they would buy the rights to a Playboy model’s story about an alleged affair Trump had with her years earlier, according to the audio recording of the conversation aired exclusively on CNN’s “Cuomo Prime Time.” The recording offers the public a glimpse at the confidential discussions between Trump and Cohen, and it confirms the man who now occupies the Oval Office had contemporaneous knowledge of a proposal to buy the rights to the story of Karen McDougal, a woman who has alleged she had an extramarital affair with Trump about a decade ago. Cohen told Trump about his plans to set up a company and finance the purchase of the rights from American Media, which publishes the National Enquirer. “I need to open up a company for the transfer of all of that info regarding our friend David,” Cohen said in the recording, likely a reference to American Media head David Pecker. Trump interrupts Cohen asking, “What financing?” according to the recording. When Cohen tells Trump, “We’ll have to pay.” Trump is heard saying “pay with cash” but the audio is muddled and it’s unclear whether he suggests paying with cash or not paying. Cohen says, “no, no” but it is not clear what is said next. No payment was ever made from Trump, Rudy Giuliani, the President’s attorney, has said. Giuliani has previously acknowledged that the recorded discussion related to the buying the story rights. The recording, which was provided to CNN by Cohen’s attorney Lanny Davis, was made in September 2016. “What is this about? This is about honesty versus false disparagement of Michael Cohen. Why is Giuliani out falsely disparaging Michael Cohen — because they fear him,” Davis said on “Cuomo Prime Time.” “What do they fear, Chris? Why am I representing him? They fear that he has the truth about Donald Trump. He will someday speak the truth about Donald Trump. The truth is that when Donald Trump said ‘cash,’ which Rudy Giuliani knows that only drug dealers and mobsters talk about cash, it was, you heard Michael Cohen … say what? ‘No, no, no, no.’” Davis later added: “Ladies and gentlemen, if you voted for Donald Trump, listen to the tape and ask yourself: Is Donald Trump lying when he said he didn’t use the word ‘cash’ and accuses Michael Cohen of using the word ‘cash’? Cohen has been disparaged. Cohen has been insulted and called all sorts of things by people around Donald Trump.” Alan Futerfas, a lawyer for Trump Organization, refuted that Trump was offering a cash payment. “Whoever is telling Davis that cash in that conversation refers to green currency is lying to him,” Futerfas told CNN. “There’s no transaction done in green currency. It doesn’t happen. The whole deal never happened. If it was going to happen, it would be a payment to a large company that would obviously be accompanied by an agreement of sale. Those documents would be prepared by lawyers on both sides.” Cash, in the conversation, was in reference to how a deal would be financed, Futerfas added. “The word cash came up in the context of the distinction between financing, which is referenced, and no financing, which means a full payment, a total one-time payment. That’s the context in which the word cash is used,” he said. “Anyone who knows anything about the company or how the President does business knows there is no green cash. Everything is documented. Every penny is documented.” Court filings said federal prosecutors have obtained 12 audio recordings from the FBI raids on Cohen earlier this year . CNN previously reported that Trump’s lawyers waived attorney-client privilege on the President’s behalf regarding the recording involving him personally. The discussion relates to whether Trump should buy the rights of the story from American Media, which paid McDougal $150,000 in August 2016 for her story about an alleged 10 month affair with Trump. The story was never published by AMI. In addition to discussing the McDougal payment, Trump and Cohen are overheard running through a list of potential legal issues, including contesting a New York Times request to unseal divorce records from Trump’s first wife Ivana as well as more mundane matters such as polling numbers and Trump surrogate Pastor Mark Burns. NEW YORK (AP) — Devin Mesoraco hit an early three-run double and made a heads-up play on defense that helped Zack Wheeler and the New York Mets defeat the San Diego Padres 6-3 on Tuesday night. Michael Conforto launched a two-run homer, extending his recent tear at the plate, and Wheeler (4-6) pitched seven crisp innings to win his second consecutive start. Before that, the right-hander went 13 outings without a victory dating to April 29 in San Diego — the longest stretch without a win for a Mets starter in 20 years. Before the game, New York put Yoenis Cespedes on the 10-day disabled list again. The team said it was awaiting a second opinion before deciding whether the oft-injured slugger needs surgery on both feet that could require an eight-to-10-month recovery. “Still trying to gather information,” manager Mickey Callaway said. Leadoff hitter Amed Rosario tripled and scored twice for the Mets, who won for only the eighth time in their last 30 home games. Wilmer Flores also scored twice. Padres left-hander Eric Lauer (5-7) struggled through the early innings once again. Even though that appeared to be the third out of the inning, Mesoraco alertly threw to third just in case, where Carlos Asuaje was easily tagged as he eased up in the basepath for what seemed to like an unnecessary “fourth out.” When umpires overturned the call at the plate, ruling Margot safe after a replay review that lasted just more than 3 minutes, they also called Asuaje out at third, ending the inning. That preserved a 3-2 lead for the Mets, and Wheeler cruised from there. TRAINER’S ROOM Padres: RHP Jordan Lyles (right elbow inflammation) made a rehab start for Triple-A El Paso and could pitch for San Diego on Sunday at home against Arizona. … INF Fernando Tatis Jr., one of the highest-rated prospects in baseball, had surgery for a broken left thumb with ligament damage. The Bronx Bombers have completed a deal with the Baltimore Orioles to acquire lefty relief pitcher Zach Britton. In return, the Yankees are sending Double-A starter Dillon Tate and Triple-A pitchers Josh Rodgers and Cody Carroll to Baltimore. In 2018 he’s posted a 3.45 earned run average to go along with four saves and 13 strikeouts through 15 and a third innings pitched. In 2016, Britton was exceptional. He was 2-1 with a 0.54 ERA and 47 saves in 47 chances. He converted an AL-record 60 consecutive save opportunities from Oct. 1, 2015, to last Aug. 21. Over his eight-year career, all with the Orioles, Britton is 30-22 with a 3.22 ERA and 139 saves.
