By Andrew Kahn The Detroit Lions have won two Thanksgiving games in a row, both in blowout fashion no less. After nine straight losses on Turkey Day, it is a welcome change for Lions fans. With their 34-17 victory over the Chicago Bears yesterday, they improved to 8-4 and put themselves in strong position to make a run at the playoffs. Detroit tallied 474 yards of offense to Chicago’s 269 and won the turnover battle 2 to 1. The return of Megatron Since returning from injury, Calvin Johnson looked like himself in only one of the three games. Megatron was in full form yesterday, catching 11 passes for 146 yards and two touchdowns, many on slants towards the middle of the field. His first score was classic Calvin, as he jumped to snag a 25-yard pass with two defenders converging on him. He used fancy footwork to get both feet in the end zone for another touchdown. There were concerns about Johnson: Was he healthy? Had he simply lost a step? But the best receiver in the NFL reminded everyone of that yesterday, repeatedly burning coverage for significant gains, often after Chicago had brought a blitz. Bears’ hot start The Lions had not scored a touchdown since November 9, so when Chicago took a 14-3 first quarter lead, it looked like Detroit may have another long day. The Bears forced a three-and-out on the game’s first possession and used five Jay Cutler completions to score quickly. After a strip-sack of Matthew Stafford, the Bears punched it in from the Detroit five. That was basically it for the Chicago offense, which was outscored 31-3 in the final three quarters. Nowhere to run Detroit has one of the best run defenses in the NFL, and Chicago barely tested it. The Bears ran just eight times for 13 yards. Matt Forte had some success catching passes out of the backfield, but his five carries went for just six yards. You don’t have to be multi-dimensional on offense to win, but it puts a lot of pressure on the pass game. Cutler attempted 48 passes and threw two interceptions. Faster, stronger Part of Detroit’s offensive resurgence yesterday was due to a faster tempo. While Detroit didn’t go no-huddle and slowed its pace late in the game to cut clock with a big lead, Detroit beat writer Michael Rothstein wrote that Detroit recently trimmed its playbook to operate more efficiently and had a greater sense of urgency on offense yesterday. It showed. Stafford was lethal, completing 75 percent of his passes to nine different players. Looking ahead Chicago’s playoff hopes were dismal entering Thanksgiving, but after falling to 5-7 they are all but nonexistent. NumberFire.com projects than to have just a 0.1 percent chance of reaching the postseason. Detroit’s odds, on the other hand, improved to 76 percent. The Lions face Tampa Bay and Minnesota at home the next two weeks before travelling to Chicago and Green Bay to finish the season. NEW YORK (CBSNewYorkAP) — Police say they’re looking for a thief who’s been targeting Brooklyn churches. As CBS2’s Emily Smith reported, the continuing crime spree has prompted a possible upgrade to locks on church doors in some sections of Brooklyn. Since Oct. 9, there have been at least 11 afternoon or evening incidents. In some of them, the would-be thief left empty-handed. In others, the person took cash, laptops and a digital camera, police said. NYPD Looking For Suspect In Church Thefts Monica Miller reports play pause The targets in Bay Ridge, Bensonhurst and Sunset Park included Our Lady of Angels, The Catholic Brothers Institute Residence and The Fourth Avenue Presbyterian Church, police said. Specifically, the burglaries happened at the following times and locations: • Around 9 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 9. The suspect entered the Nectarios Greek Orthodox Church at 340 67th St. and removed items; • Around 3 p.m. Friday, Oct. 17. The suspect entered through a wall at the St. Mary’s Antiochian Church at 192 81st St., and took an undetermined sum of cash; • Around 9 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 18. The suspect came through a window at Our Lady of Angels, at 344 73rd St., and took a laptop computer and a key for the key box; • Around 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 19. The suspect came through the rear of the Assembleia Pentecostal Church at 317 48th St. and took $200 cash; • Around 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 23. The suspect entered through a side window at St. Anselm’s Rectory, at 356 82nd St. The suspect took an HP laptop; • Around 10 p.m. Friday, Oct. 31. The suspect entered the Catholic Brothers Institute Residence at 344 73rd St., and tried to take items; • Around 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 1. The suspect walked through the front door of the Tian Fu United Methodist Church at 4616 Fourth Ave., and tried to remove items; • Around 9 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 4. The suspect came through an unknown location at the OLPH church and school at 5902 Sixth Ave., and took a Canon digital camera, an HP laptop and an undetermined sum of cash; • Around 5:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 7. The suspect entered through a side window at the Church of the Holy Spirit, at 8117 Bay Pkwy., and took an HP laptop and an undetermined sum of cash; • Around 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 8. The suspect entered through a side window at the Fourth Avenue Presbyterian Church, at 6753 Fourth Ave., and took an undetermined sum of cash; • Around 10 p.m., also Saturday, Nov. 8. The suspect entered through an unknown location at the Zion Lutheran Church, at 6307 Fourth Ave., and tried to take items. The jacket was left behind in the Zion Lutheran Church incident. Neighbors in Brooklyn were shocked and disappointed. “We have to help out, unfortunately, again to raise whatever it is that they need,” one woman said. “Today, they believe in the dollar; no more God,” a man said. “Put more effort in police work and try to find these guys to actually bring them to justice, because our church is part of our community,” a man said. Police believe the game group is behind all 11 burglaries, but they have yet to identify any suspects. Police, meanwhile, have been meeting with church leaders to get tips and help them better protect themselves by checking locks and windows on the buildings, WCBS 880’s Monica Miller reported. LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Arrest reports of those in custody following protests locally of the Ferguson grand jury decision reveal that many are in their 20s and 30s and at least one is from New York City. Overnight Wednesday, dozens were detained in downtown Los Angeles after being repeatedly asked to disperse. In all, the Los Angeles Police Department said 183 demonstrators were arrested. “There are some people that show themselves as transients. We have one, I’ve noticed, which was a college professor. So, we have everything in between,” Cmdr. Andy Smith of the LAPD told CBS2’s David Goldstein. Of the 81 arrest reports that have been processed thus far, CBS2 found that only 55 people live in the city of Los Angeles while 23 live in neighboring cities. They listed Santa Monica, Orange, Downey, Azusa, Torrance, Moreno Valley and Anaheim Hills as their places of residence, to name a few. Two were from Northern California and one from New York City. As Goldstein reports, a 60-year-old man is the oldest while 15 arrestees are juveniles. Most are in their 20s and 30s. Although there was one felony arrest, Goldstein says most were being processed for suspected misdemeanor violations. Normally, the LAPD says many would have been released on their recognizance with an order to appear in court at a later date. But in this instance, authorities are insisting on bail in the amount of $500. “In this case, because these people are part of a protest that is continuing, they will not be released on their own recognizance,” Smith said. Unless they post bail, police said, they’ll be in jail until Monday morning due to the holiday weekend. Wednesday morning, a Los Angeles activist group tweeted, “LAPD is holding the protesters hostage by doing this.” Despite those claims, police said they’re doing this by the book. NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – Police have released new video as they search for a man suspected of an arson attack in East Harlem on Monday. In the video, a man can be seen pouring flammable liquid outside Saied Deli on E. 125 th St. Seconds later, the suspect ignites the liquid, setting off a small fire, before running from the scene toward Lexington Avenue. “Sixty-five percent of the store is completely burned. This time of year business is kind of bad, I don’t know what we are going to do,” Sultan Alahal said. (Credit: NYPD) Alahal told CBS2′s Weijia Jiang that the man to blame for the fire is a known trouble maker who tried to rob the store hours before the fire. Police also released video taken before the crime as the suspect is seen talking to a worker inside the deli. When he returned around 2 a.m. on Monday morning, his actions spoke much louder. “He didn’t say anything, he didn’t scream or anything, he just poured the gas and lit the fire,” Alahal said. The suspect is described as black male, 23-35 years old, around 6-foot-2 and last seen wearing a black hoodie, tan pants, black sneakers and a Brooklyn Nets hat.
