NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) — Fireworks were set off in the Hudson River Tuesday evening in celebration of the Chinese Lunar New Year. The Grucci and Barbash families of Long Island lit up the sky with a colorful display on Tuesday near the Chinese consulate, at Twelfth Avenue and 42nd Street. The 20-minute show with three barges of fireworks was set to music. The weeklong Lunar New Year celebration also will include a performance by the New York Philharmonic, an exhibition at the New York Historical Society and a lighting of the Empire State Building. Around 10:55 a.m. Saturday, the suspect walked into the Capital One bank branch at 74-11 Metropolitan Ave. in Queens, approached a teller, and demanded money, police said. The teller complied, and the suspect left with an undetermined sum of money, police said. No injuries were reported. Police released a surveillance photo of the suspect Saturday night. Anyone with information was asked to call the NYPD Crime Stoppers at (800) 577-TIPS, log onto the Crime Stoppers website , or text tips to 274637 (CRIMES) and enter TIP577.

SEA CLIFF, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) — The widow of an Army veteran is battling with the government over his veterans benefits. Linda Parsons, wife of late Sea Cliff Mayor Norman Parsons, said because of a fire in 1973 at the National Personnel Records Center, her husband’s service records were lost, along with up to 18 million others. “It makes me feel terrible because Norm was proud of his service,” Parsons told WCBS 880’s Sophia Hall. “Everything he’s done since I met him, he’s given his all. So I know he gave his all as a private in the Army. To not get the recognition he deserves, it’s very hurtful.” Long Island Woman Fighting To Get Late Husband’s Military Benefits Sophia Hall reports play pause Her husband, who died in 2013, served in the Army from 1954 to 1956. Since there is no record he ever served, Parsons can’t receive military benefits, including a break on her property taxes. NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — As temperatures jumped to 40 degrees on Wednesday, melting and falling ice put pedestrians and drivers at risk. Large chunks of ice fell from a building on the Upper West Side Wednesday, hitting several parked cars on Central Park West. The Verrazano Narrows Bridge between Brooklyn and Staten Island was shut down in the early afternoon hours because of falling ice. This was the second time this week that falling ice was enough of a problem to make local headlines. Following a snowy, icy storm on Monday morning, Debbie Vandervoet told CBS2’s Tracee Carrasco that she noticed danger from above when she saw several chunks of ice falling from 4 World Trade Center. “It looked like glass falling down and coming off the windows,” she said, “We were walking to the memorial this morning and big shards were falling off.” Cell phone video on Monday also showed a piece of ice falling from a building on the West Side. The Sidewalk below was littered with chunks of ice and blocked off as a precaution.

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — The roaring snowstorm on Monday may have been to blame for a manhole explosion that left two people injured in Park Slope, Brooklyn. As CBS2’s Alice Gainer reported, the cover blew into the air, knocking out windows and hitting a man on the head. The fire began around 11:30 a.m. on Prospect Park West between Fifth and Sixth streets. A witness told WCBS 880’s Alex Silverman the blaze sent a manhole cover soaring about 25 feet into the air. Manhole Fire Injures 1, Blows Out Windows Near Prospect Park Alex Silverman reports play pause The smell of the smoke in the air was still perceptible more than five hours later, as Con Edison crews worked on the cables. Power was cut for the area around Fifth Street and Prospect Park as Con Ed figured everything out. Meantime, one man was hospitalized after the manhole cover landed on his head. It started with one smoking manhole on Fourth Street. “I was just shoveling my walk when I noticed the smoke coming out the middle of that block, then coming out here. The firemen were already here and my lights were flickering,” said witness and neighbor Bill Jordan. Then all of a sudden, Jordan said as he walked toward Fifth Street, the manhole blew up and him backwards before it landed on the head of a man walking his dog. “The thing was easily as high as the street lamp, and it came down and hit the fellow in front of me on the head, knocked him unconscious,” Jordan told WCBS 880’s Silverman. “But at that time, the firemen and the police were all around the scene already. So I called them immediately and said, ‘Come over. This guy just got hit in the head.’ So they were right on top of him.” The victim apparently woke up and was talking to firefighters. “I was in shock a little bit. Just barely out of the corner of my eye, I saw this manhole cover hit this guy on the head. He was unconscious, but I didn’t see any bleeding. But he still had his hat on,” Jordan said. Authorities said the man was transported to Lutheran Medical Center and his injuries were minor. He was reported in serious condition late Monday. Another pic. He was later returned to his home. Nicholas Kotsonis, a landlord, said 15 to 20 windows were shattered in his four buildings alone. He also said a 93-year-old woman in one of the buildings had to go to the hospital as a precaution as flying glass cut her. Con Ed was not calling the incident an explosion, saying such underground fires happen when road salt and water seep underground into the electrical equipment, Silverman reported. The FDNY said there was no warning. “There was no indication that it was going to explode,” said Stephen Corcoran of FDNY Battalion 32. Silverman said he felt a second blast just before 1:30 p.m., and more thick, black was billowing out of the open manhole. The Fire Department has cordoned off the area.
