NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — A man who gained fame singing Frank Sinatra on Second Avenue has been missing for more than a week, and his family is desperate to find him. Gary Russo, 54, was last seen at his Queens home located near 156th Avenue and 90th Street around 12:15 a.m. on July 28. As CBS2’s Jessica Schneider reported, the 54-year-old iron worker shot to YouTube fame in 2011 for crooning out Frank Sinatra and Bobby Darin classics at the Second Avenue subway project during his 30-minute lunch break. He was the foreman for the subway project. But now, his missing persons poster lines his Howard Beach street. His sister-in-law spotted him leaving their shared home last Tuesday at 1 a.m. “I texted him as soon as he left: ‘Gary, where are you going? Are you going to work early?’” said Leonora Russo. “But he never got back to me.” “It didn’t make any sense to me at all. I was really worried,” said Russo’s friend, Apryl Nebozenko. “This is not Gary, this is not Gary.” Friends spotted Russo’s car on Monday on 165th Avenue, not far from his house. It was locked, and the keys were gone. That was when police launched an all-out search, combing through a reedy field. “They called helicopters and then the next day, the mounted police; I think the park police came in,” Nebozenko said. Friends acknowledged that Russo had been feeling depressed after the death of a family friend, and they found evidence that he bought a plane ticket more than a month ago. But they could not figure out where the plane ticket was to, or when he was to fly. Russo’s old friends on Second Avenue, such as bar owner John Pavich, had a message for Russo. “Gary, come back,” said Russo, of the Bounce Sporting Club. “If you’d like, we’ll open the doors Tuesday night for you. You could sing all the ‘Summer Wind’ and all the Tony Bennett songs you’d like.” Police said Russo is 5 feet 9 inches tall and weighs 180 pounds. It is unclear what he was wearing when he disappeared.

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Police and fire crews had to rescue four people from the water at Jacob Riis Park beach in the Rockaways Monday evening. As CBS2’s Valerie Castro reported, the incidents happened within hours of each other at the same beach. Four people were pulled from the water, and two remained in critical condition late Monday, after nearly drowning. Emergency teams from the FDNY rushed one of two girls off the beach at Jacob Riis State Park after they nearly drowned in the rough waters around 8:30 p.m. One of the girls was taken to Mount Sinai Roosevelt Hospital in critical condition, the other to St. John’s Episcopal Hospital in serious, but stable, condition, officials said. The victims were quickly put on a waiting NYPD helicopter to be rushed to a nearby hospital. Daniel Martinez witnessed the rescue efforts. “They don’t respond. They gave them they CPR, and they said nothing, so they take them in the helicopter,” Martinez said. Martinez also took cellphone video of a helicopter on the beach involved with the rescue and near-drowning of a 62-year-old woman just after 6:30 p.m. at the same beach. “When the guys took her out of the water, she was unconscious,” Martinez said. The woman was rushed to Staten Island University Hospital and was reported in critical condition, officials said. The rescues came after a weekend that claimed the lives of two men on Long Island who also drowned. One of those men was caught in a rip current on Long Beach Saturday afternoon. Rip currents over the weekend led to more than 100 people needing help at Long Beach. If you are caught in a rip current, do not panic, and try to swim parallel to the shore until you can head toward the beach, experts advise. Also, experts advise never to swim unless lifeguards are on duty. It was unclear whether the Monday night incidents were the result of rip currents.

SILVER LAKE (CBSLA.com) — Crews worked to repair a water main that has ruptured in Silver Lake. Shortly after 3 a.m., Los Angeles Department of Water and Power crews were sent to the 1300 to 1400 block of North Benton Way. Upon their arrival, crews turned off water in the area. It remains unclear how many customers were affected. Authorities have not provided at time for water restoration in the area.
