NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Former U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York Preet Bharara seemed to express his displeasure over his dismissal on Twitter Sunday. Bharara tweeted out “By the way, now I know what the Moreland Commission must have felt like.” By the way, now I know what the Moreland Commission must have felt like. — Preet Bharara (@PreetBharara) March 12, 2017 As CBS2’s Brian Conybeare reports, the Moreland Commission was an anti-corruption panel put in place by Democratic Governor Andrew Cuomo in 2013 and abruptly shut down by his office after a deal on ethics reform was passed in 2014. Bharara’s office investigated allegations Cuomo’s team tampered with Moreland Commission probes, but eventually cleared them of breaking any federal laws. New York Sen. Chuck Schumer said he was “caught off guard” after Bharara, known for crusading against public corruption, was forced out of office Saturday. “I was extremely surprised and disappointed,” Schumer said. Bharara made the announcement in a tweet Saturday afternoon. I did not resign. Moments ago I was fired. Being the US Attorney in SDNY will forever be the greatest honor of my professional life. — Preet Bharara (@PreetBharara) March 11, 2017 “I did not resign,” the federal prosecutor said. “Moments ago I was fired.” A person with knowledge of Bharara’s actions said earlier Saturday he would not comply with Attorney General Jeff Sessions’ request to resign along with other prosecutors appointed by former President Barack Obama. Bharara, 48, was asked by then-President-elect Donald Trump to remain as U.S. attorney in Manhattan during a November meeting at Trump Tower. “The president’s decision to change his mind and fire Preet says far more about the president than it does about Preet,” Schumer said. Schumer would not speculate on why Bharara, who previously served as Schumer’s general counsel, was fired. “He did an amazing job in so many different areas,” Schumer said. “He will be sorely missed.” Preet Bharara was an excellent US attorney. Took on Wall St, public corruption & terrorists. He’ll be sorely missed. — Chuck Schumer (@SenSchumer) March 11, 2017 Schumer said he thought the way 46 U.S. Attorneys were asked to leave their offices was unusual for a new president because they had to clear out immediately, without regard for ongoing casework. “They have rarely told them have your stuff cleared out by Friday,” Schumer said. Republican Senator from Arizona John McCain defended the president’s decision to ask Bharara and 45 other U.S. Attorneys to resign Sunday. “Well I don’t know what the promise was to Mr. Bharara,” McCain said on CNN’s State of the Union, “but I do know that other administrations have done the same thing.” In the past, some U.S Attorneys have been allowed to stay on to complete major cases. Sources told CBS2 that Trump, frustrated by leaks that he believed were hurting his administration , decided to get rid of the 46 holdover U.S. attorneys from around the country who were appointed by former President Barack Obama. That included Bharara, even with his hard-won reputation for independence. Neither the White House nor Governor Cuomo’s office have commented on Bharara’s tweet from earlier. This weekend’s developments come as bipartisan Senate leaders press the Department of Justice to back up the president’s recent claim that former President Obama had the phones at Trump Tower “wiretapped” during last year’s presidential election. The Senators have given the DOJ until Monday to turn over any evidence of the wiretapping. Bharara’s departure leaves a lot of unfinished business, including the high-profile pay-to-play investigation of Mayor Bill de Blasio and his aides. The probe appeared to be in its final stages after de Blasio was interviewed two weeks ago for more than four hours.

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — We’ve all been there: You buy a bunch of food at the start of the week, only to toss it all out over the weekend, because it went bad. It’s estimated the average American family throws away $15,000 worth of food a year. But as CBS2’s Mary Calvi reports, there are plenty of ways to cut that down. Jessica Blasiak Wisner tells Calvi she feels bad about the food she throws away each week. “I would say maybe a bag a week of produce, bread — those are our two most common things, or leftovers that were never eaten,” she says. But now, she’s getting some help. JoAnne Berkenkamp is with the Natural Resources Defense Council, a nonprofit that started a campaign to cut food waste and protect the environment in the process. She says the first step to saving is planning ahead. “Am I buying for five nights, or am I really buying for two or three nights?” she says you should ask yourself. Related: Experts: ‘Sell By’ Dates Don’t Necessarily Mean Groceries Have Gone Bad Then, write that plan down. “That allows you to focus on the things that you really want to purchase and will use,” she says. When going down the produce aisle, Berkenkamp says it’s best to think before grabbing, rather than what she calls aspiration shopping. She says it’s better to buy foods with multiple uses, like spinach, that you’re able to put in other meals like pasta. “It will cook down very quickly in about two or three minutes, and it’s a way to use a great volume of salad greens really quickly,” she says. When you get home, don’t just shove the food in the fridge. Berkenkamp says you should get a refrigerator thermometer to check for a reading between 36 to 38 degrees. “That’s what will keep your food lasting the longest,” she says. She also suggests coming up with creative ways to use leftovers, like soups and crock-pot recipes. Finally, don’t forget about the freezer. “Most things can be frozen,” she says. Milk, sour, cream, and most fruits and vegetables can all go in the freezer. “Bread is also nice because it freezes well and it thaws quickly,” she adds. You’ll not only save money, but also the environment. Experts say when food is disposed in a landfill, it rots and becomes a significant source of methane, a potent greenhouse gas with 21 times the global warming potential of carbon dioxide.

NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) — The Transportation Security Administration has introduced a new “comprehensive pat-down procedure” for travelers at airports. As CBS2’s Alice Gainer reported, the TSA previously had several pat-down procedures for travelers to choose from should they opt out of using the body scanners or other technology, or if they set off a detector. But now, the TSA has created one standardized procedure. The agency calls it comprehensive, but some say it is invasive. At security checkpoints, agents ask passengers to stretch their arms out for pat-downs and then used a gloved hand to check the front of her shirt. According to the TSA, officers use the back of their hands for pat-downs over sensitive areas. But in some cases, additional screening of sensitive areas is required and a “pat-down with the front of the hand may be needed to determine that a threat does not exist,” according to the TSA. “To be patted down in a very uncomfortable position — not what I’m looking forward to,” said traveler Susan Dawson. The change in pat-down policy comes two years after a report found major security lapses across the country. “If the person doing the search does not do it properly, it is of no value,” said retired airline captain and aviation expert Denny Kelly. Kelly is a retired airline captain and said a better solution is proper training, rotating agents to avoid fatigue, and using scanning equipment. But not everyone is upset by the universal pat-down policy. “Of court, I’m all for it. You know, security’s number one thing, and I don’t care what happens to me as long as I get there in one piece,” said Thomas Aquinas of Brooklyn. “If it’s what it takes, I don’t mind,” another man said. “I really don’t care, because I think safety first,” a woman added. The universal pat-down policy went into effect on Thursday. Late Monday afternoon, passengers at Newark Liberty International Airport told CBS2’s Gainer they had not noticed it.

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) — Brandon Marshall is on the move again — and the New York Jets’ roster purge of big-name players with big salaries continues. The Jets are releasing the well-traveled wide receiver and clearing $7.5 million on the salary cap, a person with direct knowledge of the team’s decision told The Associated Press on Thursday night. The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the team had not yet announced the move, which was expected to come Friday. Marshall is the latest star to be cut by the Jets, who have also parted ways with Darrelle Revis , Nick Mangold , Nick Folk and Breno Giacomini this offseason. New York has cleared nearly $46 million in cap space during the past few weeks. MORE : Bowles Defends Jets’ Decision To Give Revis That Massive Contract MORE : Lichtenstein: Jets Did Right By Cutting Revis, But Everyone Loses Here Newsday first reported the move, and also said that Marshall asked for his release — and was granted his request — after weighing his options, including New York being interested in having the receiver return next season. Marshall has never been to the playoffs in his 11 NFL seasons and could opt to hook on with another team that he considers a possible postseason contender. MORE : Report: Jets Interested In Bills QB Tyrod Taylor In a statement posted on Instagram , Marshall thanked several members of the Jets organization, including owner Woody Johnson, general manager Mike Maccagnan and coach Todd Bowles “for bringing me in and embracing me.” He also thanked, by name, members of the equipment and training staffs, the media relations department, the maintenance crew — and even the media. Marshall also gave a shoutout to “the incredibly loyal Jets fans” — and apologized to them. “I’m sorry……I’m sorry we couldn’t bring you a championship, but I wish you and my former organization the very best in your pursuit for one in the future,” he wrote. “I’m looking forward to finding a great organization where I can contribute and bring home a championship. I know I have a lot left to give, and @michi_marshall and I will truly miss the Jets, but we are excited for what lies ahead.” MORE : Palladino: Mangold’s Departure Only Complicates Jets’ Problems Up Front Marshall, who turns 33 on March 23, played two seasons for the Jets, and set franchise records with 109 catches and 1,502 yards receiving in 2015 while being voted the team’s MVP by his teammates. His production dropped dramatically last season, though, as he had just 59 receptions for 788 yards and three TDs while dealing with a few injuries and inconsistent quarterback play. Marshall was also involved in a locker room argument with teammate Sheldon Richardson after the Jets were blown out in Kansas City in Week 3. That spat appeared to set the tone for the Jets’ 5-11 season, with Revis saying the incident “just left a dark cloud over our head.” Wide receiver Quincy Enunwa said New York’s locker-room conflict “didn’t help us. You look at our record and it really hindered our play.” Marshall has also previously played for Denver, Miami and Chicago, which traded him and a seventh-round draft pick to New York in 2015 for a fifth-rounder. After a terrific first season with the Jets, capped by his sixth Pro Bowl selection, Marshall endured a difficult second campaign in New York. He played through a sprained knee ligament, sprained foot and toe injury for most of the season, which ended with him being inactive for the season finale because of a sore hip. “It was probably my most frustrating year,” Marshall said the day after the season ended. He insisted, though, that he intends to play until he’s about 38 or 39, and believes he still is capable of putting up big seasons. “I’m still extremely confident that I’m an elite receiver,” he said. “I still demand double-coverage, still demand a lot of attention. … I think I’m still at that level where I can demand that type of respect, that type of coverage. The numbers weren’t there, and that’s new for me. I think this is a year that most receivers can hang their hat on, but not for me. “The bar’s set high, and it’s unacceptable.” Marshall has caught at least 100 passes six times in his career and has put up at least 1,000 yards eight times. During his final meeting with Jets reporters in January, Marshall said the gaudy numbers and big contracts are no longer important to him. “It’s not about the money anymore,” he said at the time. “It’s all about winning.” As for the Jets, they still have Eric Decker, who is rehabilitating from offseason hip and shoulder surgery and is expected to be ready in time for the regular season. He missed all but three games last season, catching just nine passes for 194 yards and two TDs. Decker’s absence helped create opportunities for some younger receivers, including Enunwa, who set career highs with 58 catches for 857 yards and four scores. Speedy undrafted rookie Robby Anderson also opened eyes by catching 42 passes for 587 yards and two TDs. Youngsters Devin Smith, Charone Peake and Jalin Marshall also remain on the roster. MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) — Former Mount Vernon Mayor Ronald Blackwood, the first African-American elected mayor in New York state, has died. Blackwood was elected mayor of the Westchester County community in 1985. In a statement, current Mount Vernon Mayor Richard Thomas said Blackwood “broke barriers and built bridges to the future showing how an immigrant can truly live the American Dream.” “He was an example of what a public servant should be. You could always find him walking up and down the streets, connecting with residents, responding to their wants and needs,” Thomas said in a statement. “He was truly a man of the people. When he spoke to you, he made you feel as if you were the center of the universe. He was a leader not a politician, a man who worked with grace and grit.” Blackwood was born in the country of Jamaica, according to the Mount Vernon mayor’s office. The New York Daily News reported that moved to Mount Vernon in 1955 and served on the Westchester County Board of Supervisors beginning in 1967. He later served as a Mount Vernon city councilman, the newspaper reported. He also served as acting mayor for four months in 1976 after the death of Mount Vernon Mayor August Petrillo, the newspaper reported. Thomas said Blackwood often spoke of the ”obstacles, disappointments and frustrations” he experienced as making his way to New York and Westchester County. “But he persevered, making himself an example for young men and women,” Thomas said in a statement. “Everyone knows that his love for this city knew no bounds.” Thomas said Blackwood worked to promote job opportunities, affordable housing, and crime-fighting measures. “Mount Vernon will continue to remember his legacy of leadership and thank him and his family for their dedication to the city,” Thomas said in his statement.

There were also some Trump supporters who came before the rally began in an effort to give a counter-message, Jones reported. Meanwhile, the president’s holiday weekend featured his own raucous campaign rally , a health care strategy session, interviews for a new national security adviser and even a few holes of golf. Trump brought four contenders to his private club Mar-a-Lago in Florida on Sunday as he seeks a replacement for retired Gen. Michael Flynn, who was ousted last week. Trump says he wants to make a decision in the next few days. The president also drilled down on policy during his working weekend at Mar-a-Lago, attending a strategy session on how to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act. Joining him were Health Secretary Tom Price and the director of the White House budget office, Mick Mulvaney. (TM and © Copyright 2017 CBS Radio Inc. and its relevant subsidiaries.
